4 Welcome Note From CVF President, Beverley Cattrall Welcome, one and all, to CVF s 2018 Convention hosted by the Dartmouth Volksmarch Club. There is much to celebrate as we gather together, including DVC s 35 th anniversary and the 50 th anniversary of IVV. The theme of the Convention is Nova Scotia, Where It All Began, so I hope you will have many opportunities to learn more of the history of DVC, Halifax and Dartmouth, and Nova Scotia as you try out the many lovely walks our hosts have planned for us. The Convention serves as a wonderful forum, for renewing old friendships while making new ones. It is my hope that you will enjoy every minute of the coming days, and that you will make memories to last a lifetime. See you on the trails! 5 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT- DARTMOUTH VOLKSMARCH CLUB Welcome to Nova Scotia, affectionately known as Canada s Ocean Playground. Our province has a well-earned reputation for fine east coast hospitality, a scenic coastline with inviting ocean beaches, delicious seafood and infectious music. I hope that you take advantage of these amenities and more during your visit. We are also blessed with some of the most picturesque hikes which you will find in the world. With this in mind, the Dartmouth Volksmarch Club is honored to serve as the host organization for the 31 st Annual Convention, in this, the 35 th year of our club s existence. I must acknowledge the hard work of the Convention Planning Committee. Under the leadership of Lionel Conrod, the Committee has been toiling for the past two years organizing every detail to ensure a memorable convention. I would encourage all delegates to make the most of your convention experience by attending the walks, social events and AGM. 10 MESSAGE FROM CONVENTION CHAIR Lionel Conrod Welcome to my chosen city Halifax Regional Municipality. I say, my chosen city because it is that. We previously lived in Toronto and Vancouver but we choose to retire in Halifax. Mind you there is nothing wrong with Toronto and Vancouver; however, you can take the boy out of the east coast but you cannot take the east coast out of the boy! The last time the CVF Convention was in Halifax was in I was the CVF President at the time, and of course, two other people shared the position of chairing the committee and I think it was a great success. I have the pleasure of chairing the convention committee this time and have put a lot of thought into it over the past two years. I have to congratulate the members of the committee who have stepped up as volunteers, shared their views, and are now ready to serve in their various duties. Our city has changed immensely in the last 18 years. Many new buildings have been erected such as the Central Library and the Nova Convention Centre. Be sure to check these out if you pass by them. The population has also grown and is now well over 400,000. Our motto for this convention is, Nova Scotia, Where it all began. You will notice in your walks that you will be passing by many buildings and locations that meet that description. And believe me, there are many more. Back in 1983 Lily and I were transferred from Port Moody, BC to Dartmouth, NS. When we lived in BC we belonged to a wonderful club called North Shore Hikers and their trails took us to many beautiful locations. A few months after arriving in Dartmouth, Lily noticed a small advertisement in the local newspaper for the start up of a walking club. The first meeting was held in June, after which we had a few guided walks. The second meeting was in September when the Grandfather of Canadian Volkssports, Ron Colpitts, chaired the organizational meeting for the Dartmouth Volksmarch Club. What a wonderful thing to happen in our lives; we have done untold walks around the world, and met many interesting people. Yes, this is Where it all began for us! 10
