2 2013 Court Architecture Executive Research Tour Montréal and New York City This tour has been organised by the Court of the Future Network and the Institut des hautes e tudes sur la justice, in association with the Centre de recherche en droit public and the Towards Cyberjustice Research Project (Universite de Montreál) and the American Institute of Architects Academy of Architecture for Justice ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The organizing committee for the 2013 Court Architecture Executive Research Tour is grateful to the many people who have individually and collectively made the tour possible. GENERAL INFORMATION Dress Appropriate dress during all parts of the tour is business attire (and ties for men). Photography Permission to take photographs is at the discretion of the courts. Generally they allow photography wherever members of the public are not present. Where possible, we have provided more explicit advice for each court in the program. However, please be advised that in some instances, cameras may be requested to be left at security screening, to be returned on exiting the building. 2

Local Information: Montréal Montréal is a city in the Canadian province of Québec. French is the province's official language. The Canadian dollar (sign: $; code: CAD) is the currency of Montréal. In May, the average maximum temp is 19ºC and the average minimum temp is 7ºC. Montréal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport (admtl.com) is Montréal's main regional and international airport. Situated southwest of downtown Montréal in Dorval, Québec, it is approximately 25kms from the city centre. Taxi: Taxis and limousines are readily available outside the terminal on the Arrivals level, with a set fare (C$40) to the city centre metered fares are available to other destinations. Rail: A free minibus service links the airport with Dorval station 2km (1.2 miles) away, from where VIA Rail ( operates services along the Ottawa-Montréal, Québec City-Montréal and Toronto-Montréal routes. Bus: Société de Transport de Montréal ( offers a 24-hour express service (bus 747) between Montréal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport and central Montréal (journey time: 35 minutes; fare: C$8). Tickets can be purchased at the ICE currency exchange counter in International Arrivals. In addition, STM bus 204 operates between the airport and the Dorval transport terminus. 9 New York City In May, the average maximum temp in New York City is 22 ºC and the average low temp is 12ºC. There are three main airports for NYC: John F Kennedy Airport (JFK) JFK is situated on Jamaica Bay in Queens. JFK Airport is located 25 kilometres from New York City, approximately an hour drive. Taxi: $45 flat rate + tolls and tip from JFK to anywhere in Manhattan. There are variable rates from Manhattan to JFK + tolls and tip. Rail: The light rail Airtrain connects directly to New York s subway system which will then take you directly to Manhattan. The trip takes an hour and you will have to purchase both an Airtrain ticket and a Subway ticket. Shuttle: There are several shuttle bus services to Manhattan including the New York Airport Service Express bus and the Super shuttle. The New York Airport Service Express bus departs every minutes between the hours of 6:30 am and 11:10 pm and the journey takes an hour. Families should take note that for each ticket purchased, a child travels free. Passengers can either be dropped off at a general designated area in Manhattan for a lower price or at their specific midtown hotel for a slightly increased fare. Discounted roundtrips can also be purchased online. Providing a 24 hour service the Super shuttle bus charges you a certain price depending on your destination. No reservations are required to get from the airport and the shuttle bus is a door to door service. However reservations are required for your return trip back to JFK airport. For more information about transport from JFK, please visit: Newark (EWR) Airport Rail: AirTrain Newark takes approximately 30 minutes to get to Manhattan and costs $ Bus: Newark Airport Express Buses are only $16 one way or $28 round trip and arrive at each stop every 15 minutes during the day. Taxi: A taxi fare to Manhattan will cost approximately $50-$70 (not including tolls and tips). For more information about transport from Newark, please visit: La Guardia (LGA) Airport Located just four miles from Manhattan, LaGuardia has a variety of transport options to New York City. Bus: For service between LaGuardia and Manhattan, the M60 bus goes to 106th and Broadway with connections on the route to the Q33 and Q47 buses and the E, F, G, R, V and 7 trains on the New York City subway. Taxi: A taxi fare to Manhattan will cost approximately $25-37 (not including tolls and tips). For more information about transport from La Guardia, please visit: 9

10 For more information about New York City, please visit: Additional Information: To avoid excessive charges if you are using your Australian SIM card while in the US, make sure you switch your data roaming to OFF. On an iphone, you can do this by going to: Settings General Network Data Roaming OFF. Remember to bring plenty of business cards with you. Tipping in the US - The general rule for a restaurant or cafe is to tip 15 to 20 per cent of your bill total. Sometimes restaurants automatically include the tip in the bill. This particularly happens in tourist hotels and areas. However, you don't have to accept it. If the service was not up to standard, ask for the tip to be taken out of the bill. Taxi drivers expect a 10 to 20 per cent tip and the general tipping rule in a bar is usually $1 a drink. 10
