2 Preface In our church community ESL classes we have the privilege of meeting and befriending many students who come to our great city from all over the world. It is our joy to help them feel settled in Australia not only by teaching them English but also by helping them learn about their city - Sydney. These lessons are an updated version of our resource first written in The lessons have come after many requests from students and teachers to learn about Sydney. We have chosen some of the places in Sydney that we think are the most significant. A relevant Bible segment has been included with each lesson. The lessons are two hours in length for two levels of students - elementary and intermediate. Each lesson is complete in itself although we have tried to arrange the lessons in order of difficulty. Each lesson consists of the following: An Introductory Activity: This is designed for all the students together and should be applicable to most levels. A Lesson Plan for both an upper level class and a lower level class. Pictures to use as visual aids are provided at the back of the book but teachers are encouraged to look for additional relevant pictures, maps and information about the places to be studied. These can be sourced from many places including Tourist Information Office The Rocks Cnr Argyle & Playfair Street Sydney 2000 It is also suggested that a class excursion to some of the places being studied should be an essential part of this series of lessons. We hope that these lessons will be helpful to students in learning English as well as in learning about the city that has become their home. We would appreciate any feedback and/or corrections which could be incorporated into later editions. However more than anything we pray that the lessons will be a means of helping people understand more of the God who loves them and the people of Sydney. 5 Introduction to Sydney Landmarks Introductory Activities Whole Class Objectives To help students become familiar with some of the best-known Sydney landmarks. To help students ask for and understand directions to these landmarks. Preparation Method Bring pictures of major Sydney landmarks from books or tourist brochures. Photocopy the Introductory Worksheet you will be using. Choose as many of the following activities as time permits. Brainstorm to discover what Sydney buildings and places the students know. Write the names on the board on lines around the word Sydney, as below, as students call them out. The Rocks Opera House SYDNEY Harbour Bridge Try to include: The Opera House, The Harbour Bridge, the Rocks, the Queen Victoria Building (QVB), Circular Quay, and the Town Hall. 2 Write Have you ever been to...? on the board. Say to students: Think of a place you have been to in Sydney. Ask another student Have you ever been to...? If s/he has, decide what you will tell the rest of the class about that place. If s/he has not been to that place, ask another student. If there is an available picture of each pairs chosen place they could show and comment on the picture to the rest of the class. 3 As there is an emphasis on prepositions in the remainder of the lesson draw students attention to them by activities such as the following: Number students in groups of four. Number them, 2, 3, 4. Tell them to stand as follows: & 2 opposite 3 & 4 3 & 4 in front of & 2 & 2 next to 3 & 4 3 behind 2 on the right of 2 3 & 4 beside & 2 3 on the left of 4 etc. 4 ESL - Discovering Sydney

6 4 Distribute the Introductory Worksheet with pictures of 6 of the places to be studied labelled -6. Read the text clearly describing each building. Students should listen and write the letter a, b, etc next to the number of the building being described. a b c d e f This is made of one huge span of grey steel, built on brick towers called pylons. At night it has hundreds of lights, so that people can see it from all over Sydney. Some people say it looks like a coat hanger across Sydney harbour. Thousands of people use it every day to get from North Sydney to the city. This modern building is known as one of the most famous sights in the world. It looks like giant white sails on the harbour, and it has white marble roof tiles on top of pink-grey stone walls. It is on the edge of the harbour. Music and concerts are held here. This is a well-known building in George Street. It is a beautiful old stone building and fills a whole block. It has rows of stone arches, with two small green domes at each side of the roof. Outside the building is a statue of a queen, and inside are cafes and shops selling expensive clothes and jewellery. The ferry boats that carry people across Sydney harbour to the city start and end here. When you get off the ferry you find musicians, actors, people selling things, ice cream parlours and cafes. Trains and buses start here too, and you can walk from here to the Opera House in 5 minutes. Behind this place are the tall buildings of the city. This attractive big stone building, built in 889, is on George Street. It has a huge tower with a clock. At the front are wide steps where people wait to meet friends. It is used for concerts and has a splendid organ. This is an old area of Sydney, stretching up the hill from George Street. The buildings are mostly of yellow stone, joined to each other. Many of the houses were very small when people lived in them. They are now used as shops and restaurants. 5 Distribute Introductory Worksheet 2 to the students. Help them to write the names of the places under the pictures. Students should now separate acording to English ability levels. ESL- Discovering Sydney...5
