In addition to supporting lectures organised by the local councils, the Friends held during 2011 a number of functions with the purpose of raising funds. Several notable events are listed below. In Athens the fund-raising activities, mainly guided tours or Museums and sites, were organized by the Deputy Director, including a visit to Zea Harbour and the Danish Underwater Excavations The Sydney Friends held a public lecture in Greek by Christina Papastamati von Moock (Greek Ministry of Culture) entitled The Reconstruction of the Theatre of Dionysos on the South Slope of the Acropolis In Canberra the Friends held a public lecture entitled The Craft of Minoan Metal Vessel Manufacture during the Cretan Bronze Age by Christina Clarke. 12

II HOSTEL AND LIBRARY From January 1 to 31 December 2011 a total of 90 persons used the accommodation facilities of the Athens Hostel, including 16 Australian students, 24 non-australian, students, 10 visiting academics and 40 others. Dr Amelia Brown of the University of Queensland used the Hostel for her 2011 Summer School. As well as housing members of the Institute and members of other Foreign Schools, the hostel facilities were used during the year as a venue for lectures and Council Meetings of the Athens Friends of the AAIA. A shipment of 30 boxes of books, weighing a total of 700 kilos and representing almost 500 individual volumes were shipped to Sydney from the Athens library. Many of these are Greek publications, which would prove impossible to find in any other library in Australia, and now enrich the library of the Institute in Sydney, giving students access to books they would not have otherwise. III THE FELLOWSHIP The 2012 Fellowship for research in Greece was awarded to Ms Kristen Mann who is a postgraduate student at the University of Sydney. She will use her time in Athens undertaking research towards the completion of her Ph.D. Ms Mann s thesis is entitled Social Living: The archaeology of households and settlement organization at Zagora on Andros. IV THE ACADEMIC PROGRAMME Lectures Seminars The following lecture-seminars were held at the Hostel of the Institute: April 28 Associate Professor T. Hillard (Macquarie University) Romans in Greek Thrall: Roman Epicureans in Athens 15

May 4 May 10 November 2 November 16 Associate Professor T. Hillard (Macquarie University) Looking for the Harbour of Ancient Torone (Annual Lecture) Professor J.Y. Perreault (Université de Montréal) Domestic Architecture in the Northern Aegean: Ancient Argilos and the Development of the Pastas House Dr. A. Blanshard (University of Sydney) Why were there no serial killers in ancient Athens? Dr. S.A. Paspalas (Australian Archaeological Institute at Athens) The Cities of the Chalkidic Peninsula: From Archaic to Classical V STUDY SEASONS AND FIELDWORK IN GREECE AND CYPRUS (a) The Zagora study season: In 2011 the Zagora 3 publication team have concentrated their efforts on completing the research on their respective areas of responsibility: Dr. Paspalas has focused on the fine wares, Ms McLoughlin on the cooking and storage ceramics and Dr McCallum on the architecture. In parallel with this work, Ms McLoughlin and Dr McCallum and the Arts e-research team have made major inroads in the development of the project s web database system, Heurist, and its interface with the geographic mapping of the architecture in ArcGIS. (c) Nea Paphos: The University of Sydney completed its fourteenth season of archaeological investigations of the precinct of the Hellenistic-Roman theatre of Nea Paphos between the 1st and 28th October The work was conducted under the auspices of the Department of Antiquities of the Republic of Cyprus, and was directed by Dr Craig Barker, Dr Smadar 16

Gabrieli and Emeritus Professor Richard Green for the University of Sydney. The Australian archaeological excavations in Paphos received financial support from the Australian Archaeological Institute at Athens towards the work for a third year. Two trenches were opened by the mission in The first was located in the centre of the nymphaeum to the south of the theatre. The Paphos nymphaeum is located between the theatre and the northernmost main road of the ancient city; perfectly positioned close to the ancient north-eastern city gates and near the main entrances of the theatre. The nymphaeum was over 20 metres long and five metres wide and was probably constructed in the first century AD. In its thick masonry walls a niche was built for sculpture; the building was covered with a simply-designed mosaic and waterproofed chamfered plastered walls. An outlet for water led into the main drainage channel underneath the Roman road. Once the water supply system was blocked as a result of a late 4th century AD earthquake, the ruins of the nymphaeum became a convenient dumping ground for architectural elements from nearby buildings. Marble Corinthian capitals, column fragments, and architrave blocks were recovered from the debris dumped inside this building, while pottery finds dating from the 5th to the 7th centuries AD seem to confirm this use of the building to the period of the stone-quarrying of the theatre. A second trench was located to the west of the nymphaeum. A series of bedrock cuts here suggest there was an attempt to landscape the area between the back of the theatre s stage building and the Roman road. A wall built alongside the road suggests a deliberate attempt by Roman civic planners to create a built urban environment in spaces of empty land between major public buildings however was in the main a study season designed to complete recording and interpretation of finds from previous seasons of excavation. Final academic publication of the architectural history of the theatre is expected soon. The theatre, the nymphaeum and the road provide invaluable insight into the urban layout of the ancient capital city of the island. Fieldwork will continue in October

VI THE DIRECTOR S ANNUAL REPORT AND THE ANNUAL LECTURE IN ATHENS The Annual Report of the AAIA for the calendar year 2011 was held in Athens on May 4.
