1 Biographical and Contents Notes William Jairus Gillette was born in Tiffin, Ohio, October 9, 1857 to Erastus Goodman Gillette ( ) and Jane Florence (Norris) Gillette ( ). William studied medicine, first, under the instruction of two physicians in Fremont, Ohio where he grew up, then at Western Reserve Medical College. After practicing medicine in Millersville, Ohio for about three years, he did further studies at the University of Goettinger in Germany. When he returned to the States, he began a practice at Bettsville, Ohio. He married Charlotte Ann Stackhouse in Bettsville on December 18, They moved to Toledo in 1886 where William began a practice specializing in surgery. He practiced at Toledo Hospital for ten years. He was one of the founders of Robinwood Hospital (later St. Luke s Hospital) as well as the Academy of Medicine of Toledo and Lucas County. He was on the faculty of the Toledo Medical College, which was part of Toledo University. William died on May 13, 1925 of a heart attack. William and Charlotte had 8 children. 1) Erastus Benjamin (usually E. Benjamin) was born November 28, 1885 in Bettsville, married Jeanette McGlone on June 24, 1926, and died July 24, ) Florence Eugenia was born November 25, 1887, married Clarence Wesley Sumner on December 25, 1916, and died October 14, ) Norris William was born May 19, 1890, married Hazel Ellen Cratz on April 20, 1920, and died November 10, ) Gladys was born July 28, 1892, married Richard Herman on April 22, 1937, and died September 26, ) Edith Helen was born April 13, 1894 and died unmarried on July 3, ) Edward Porter was born July 31, 1896, married Mary Ann Urschel on January 8, 1920, and died May 2, ) Robert Stackhouse was born February 17, 1899, married Miriam Matilda Dumm on September 3, 1929, and died November 29, ) Eleanor Charlotte was born May 24, 1902, married Carl Henry Madison on June 17, 1929, and died October 18, Three of their sons, Edward, Norris and Robert served in the Army during World War I. Robert was also in the Navy during World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater from spring 1943 until autumn All of William and Charlotte s sons became doctors in Toledo and for many years operated the Gillette Clinic at 320 Michigan Street. With their father s financial backing, they built the building that housed the clinic and later was named the Toledo Medical Building. Charlotte Ann (Stackhouse) Gillette was born in Bettsville, Ohio, May 7, 1864 to Benjamin Stackhouse (March 26, 1836-September 9, 1917) and Sarah Eugenia (Stahl) Stackhouse (May 6, 1837-October 5, 1938). She died in Toledo on August 20, Her parents, Benjamin Stackhouse and Sarah Eugenia (Stahl) Stackhouse, were married in Fremont, Ohio on March 26, Benjamin was from Seneca County and Sarah was from Ballville, Sandusky County. Benjamin and Sarah (Stahl) had 6 children. Jessie Eleanor was born June 7, Charlotte Ann was born May 7, John Miles was born January 16, 1868.

2 Biographical and Contents Notes Addie M. was born May 20, Bertha Leigh was born May 1, 1872 and died January 31, 1899 and Silas J. Stackhouse, Jr. was born September 2, Benjamin Stackhouse ( ) was the son of Silas Jackson Stackhouse (October 6, 1806-July 10, 1890) and Sarah B. (Lockhart) Stackhouse (February 1, 1809-January 28, 1859). Silas J. and Sarah (Lockhart) Stackhouse had ten children, four of whom died in infancy. The six who survived to adulthood were: Joseph G. M.; William L. who moved to Jackson County, Kansas; Benjamin; Ann B. who married W. C. Boor; Lockhart; A. Judson. Silas Jackson Stackhouse was born on October 6, 1806 to Benjamin Stackhouse (December 27, 1773-December 20, 1849) and Sarah (Jackson) Stackhouse (January 4, 1783-March 24, 1866). Other children of this marriage were Mrs. Hannah Kearney and Mrs. Sarah Blair. The correspondence for the Stackhouse side of the family includes numerous letters written to Silas and Benjamin Stackhouse, addressed as Brother and Nephew by Ann J. and Nancy S. Lockhart, Rohrsburg, Columbia County, Pennsylvania. There were also letters from E. G. and Margaret Ricketts of Orangeville, Columbia County, Pennsylvania. Margaret was a Lockhart and it appears that these three women were sisters to Sarah (Lockhart) Stackhouse. This collection of letters has several interesting aspects. First, there are letters written by Robert S. Gillette during his military service in World War II. There are Civil War era letters from Henry Stahl to his sister, Sarah (Stahl) Stackhouse. Henry G. Stahl was a bugler in 3 rd Ohio Cavalry, Co. D, which organized at Camp Worcester in Huron County, Ohio. Silas J. Stackhouse wrote several letters in 1873 to Benjamin from Netawaka, which was located in Jackson County, Kansas where Benjamin s brother, William, moved. Many of the Stackhouse letters are valuable to anyone researching family history of the Lockharts and Stackhouses. The last folder in the collection has photocopies of information gathered in 2005 while researching these families to write the Biographical and Contents Notes. These notes help supplement information gathered by Edith Gillette in Folder 15.
