Jan - 16 Jan trip dates the trip Starting out of Christchurch, this itinerary has us cycling in the nearby picturesque Banks Peninsula region before travelling south to Oamaru. There we visit a penguin colony and the historic Old Quarter built from the local white stone before pedaling along the Pacific coast to Dunedin. We have a day to explore this beautiful city with its rich Scottish heritage before touring the Catlins Coast, which is known for its beautiful beaches and exotic wildlife. It is a place where forests and farmland harmonise in postcard perfection beside the windswept southern coast. We take a day off the bikes to explore remote Stewart Island, with an option to sea kayak into beautiful bays and inlets surrounded by untouched natural forest. Returning to the mainland we cycle on very quiet roads bordering Fiordland National Park before an overnight on the remote and magical Doubtful Sound with its spectacular glaciated walls and rainforests. Finally, crossing the rolling plains of the lower South Island, we cycle towards Queenstown, where we spend time exploring this truly stunning location. There is time to relax or enjoy some of the exciting activities available before our trip concludes. at a glance DAY 1 DAY 2 DAY 3 DAY 4 DAY 5 DAY 6 DAY 7 DAY 8 DAY 9 DAY 10 DAY 11 DAY 12 DAY 13 DAY 14 DAY 15 2 JANUARY 2018: ARRIVE CHRISTCHURCH, ASSEMBLE BIKES 3 JANUARY 2018: CHRISTCHURCH TO AKAROA 4 JANUARY 2018: CHRISTCHURCH TO DUNEDIN 5 JANUARY 2018: MOERAKI BOULDERS TO DUNEDIN 6 JANUARY 2018: DUNEDIN 7 JANUARY 2018: DUNEDIN TO KAKA POINT 8 JANUARY 2018: KAKA POINT TO MCLEAN FALLS 9 JANUARY 2018: MCLEAN FALLS TO BLUFF; FERRY TO STEWART ISLAND 10 JANUARY 2018: STEWART ISLAND 11 JANUARY 2018: FERRY TO BLUFF; TO MANAPOURI 12 JANUARY 2018: MANAPOURI; BOARD YACHT FOR DOUBTFUL SOUND 13 JANUARY 2018: RETURN FROM DOUBTFUL SOUND; TO TE ANAU 14 JANUARY 2018: TE ANAU TO QUEENSTOWN 15 JANUARY 2018: QUEENSTOWN TO GLENORCHY RETURN 16 JANUARY 2018: TRIP CONCLUDES QUEENSTOWN what s included 13 nights hotel/motel accommodation, twinshare with ensuite facilities 1 night public luxury yacht Doubtful Sound, twinshare with ensuite facilities 14 breakfasts, 10 lunches, 10 dinners 1 group arrival and departure transfer on Days 1 and 15 2 Adventure South driver guides 2 Tandems East escorts support vehicle throughout specialized bike trailer to carry tandem bikes and luggage transfer of bike cases from Christchurch to Queenstown public ferry to/from Stewart Island National Park fees detailed itinerary DAY 1 2 JANUARY 2018: Arrive Christchurch, assemble bikes On arrival at Christchurch International Airport there will be one group pick-up today to transfer to the hotel. This morning we drive (approx 30 mins) to Lyttleton and cycle a few hills around Lyttleton Harbour (the base of an extinct volcanic crater) to the village of Diamond Harbour with some impressive views along the way. There is time for a coffee while we load the bikes and then drive (approx 1hr 15 mins) onto the Banks Peninsula to the Hilltop Tavern for lunch. We pass through the settlement of Liver River on the way, historically significant as the end of the railway line built in the 19th century from Christchurch. The railway line was dismantled in After lunch we get on our bikes again to cycle the spectacular summit road that winds along the rim of another extinct volcanic caldera. With stunning views our route takes us to the quaint seaside village of Akaroa, formerly a French colony. After a stroll through the village we return to our hotel in Christchurch. This evening is free to try one of the many restaurants in the city at your leisure. Driving out of the city to avoid the traffic we travel (approx 1 hr) to the Rakaia Gorge and cycle this impressive section of road - there are a few good hills here. We continue along quiet backroads to Geraldine, passing through some rich farming country of the Canterbury Plains before the terrain becomes gently undulating. We will satisfy our lunch time appetites in Geraldine before loading our bikes and travelling via National Highway 1 along the coast to Oamaru. There is time to stretch our legs here and wander through the town s historic old quarter with many grand buildings constructed from local limestone before continuing to our destination for tonight in the South Island s second largest city, Dunedin. Tonight is our only opportunity to meet up with members of Group 1 so we will enjoy dinner with them while sharing stories about the day and our adventures so far, before they continue south. 4 fast facts Countries Visited: New Zealand responsible travel We all have a responsibility to minimise the impact we have on the environment and communities we visit when we travel. Since our beginnings this has been a cornerstone of our company. The New Zealand travel industry has become a world leader in developing an external audit process to identify quality, and that process has been extended to now include a 3 level Enviro Mark based on company processes. We re very proud that we ve received a Gold rating, the highest category; each year since this initiative began. Being responsible when we travel isn t about a single process or project but rather a way of thinking and then doing. We started this journey many years ago, and acknowledge we still have a lot to learn. We invite you to join us! trip grading Moderate To determine the grade of a particular adventure we consider a number of factors. These include the condition of the terrain, the altitude, the number of pass crossings and the length of the trip. The Tandems East Adventure South Experience 2018 is graded moderate. You will need a good level of fitness and we suggest 60 minutes of aerobic type exercise, (either cycling, jogging or swimming) three times a week for the three months leading up to your trip. The tour is fully supported and if at any stage you feel like having a rest from cycling you will be able to ride in the support vehicle. DAY 4 5 JANUARY 2018: Moeraki Boulders to Dunedin Today we retrace our steps a little and drive north for 1.5-2hrs to the outskirts of Oamaru. Today may test our cycling stamina but there are options to break up the full distance if you are feeling tired and want to travel in the vehicle for a while. We start by cycling south of Oamaru along a quiet coast road that has us feeling like we are almost pedalling in the ocean. We join the wide main road for a short section which takes us through to Moeraki Boulders, uniquely rounded intriguing lumps of rock exposed on the sand by erosion. Continuing south we leave the coast and the main road to cycle a quiet road to Palmerston. Wiggling our way back to the sea we meet it at the Karitane estuary and then take on the Dunedin Hills. A good grunt for the afternoon, these hills afford some superb harbour views as we return to Dunedin, once again via a different and more scenic route to the main road on which we arrived last night. Dinner this evening is at your leisure, at any one of the multitude of eateries the city has to offer. Dunedin Palms Motel (or similar) High St, Dunedin Cycle distance: Oamaru to Palmerston - 59 km / 37 miles Palmerston to Karitane - 12km / 7 miles Karitane to Dunedin - 42 km / 26 miles Oamaru to Dunedin km / 70 miles meals: B,L DAY 5 6 JANUARY 2018: Dunedin Today is a chance to rest those weary legs and enjoy exploring Dunedin, with its rich Scottish heritage. The local Speights Brewery or Cadbury Chocolate Factory tours will appeal to some; lunch at Larnach Castle or the wonderful train ride on the Taieri Gorge Express are other options. If the wind is up in the early evening your guides will take you out to the Albatross colony at Tairoa Heads, where you have a chance to see these amazing birds soaring on the breeze at close hand. For those who like to ride, there is a wonderful loop ride out to the Tairoa Heads and back to Dunedin, which can make a neat half or full day trip. Tonight we will all get together for dinner to share stories about the day. Dunedin Palms Motel (or similar) High St, Dunedin Optional Cycle Distance Dunedin to Tairoa Heads loop 70 km /43 miles meals: B,D DAY 6 7 JANUARY 2018: Dunedin to Kaka Point We will spend the next few days exploring the Catlins Coast, the more populated part of the far south. That said, this area has an amazing mix of windswept coastline, farmland, wildlife and interesting cycling - and we will experience it all. This morning we enjoy a very beautiful coastal ride from Dunedin to the mouth of the Taieri River. To avoid a busy highway section we then load Adventure South - Janet Oldham 7/20/2016 2:50:32 PM
adventure travel By its very nature adventure travel involves an element of the unexpected. To get the most out of your adventure it is important that you are mentally flexible, positive and eager to take on all the challenges that arise. If you are uncertain about your suitability for this trip we recommend that you speak with your consultant or travel agent. important note These trip notes represent the most current information for this itinerary, and may supersede any information in the current brochure, including but not limited to the itinerary and price. The itinerary should be seen as a guide only. This itinerary may change at any time due to inclement weather, forces of nature and other circumstances beyond our control. the bikes & drive to Balclutha. From there we cycle to the tiny village of Kaka Point where we stay tonight. (Note: this is very different to Dunedin.) There is time after our arrival to drive out to view the fantastic rock formations at Nugget Point. (The road surface here is not suitable for tandems.) Nugget View & Kaka Point Motels (or similar) 11 Rata St, Kaka Point, South Otago Cycle distance: Dunedin to Taieri Mouth - 25 km / 15.5 miles Balclutha to Kaka Point 33 km / 20miles DAY 7 8 JANUARY 2018: Kaka Point to McLean Falls This morning we drive on another gravel road to spectacular Surat Bay where we have a chance to observe the resident sea lions. Then we find ourselves taking on more scenic cycling along quiet roads as we continue along the Catlins coast. The cycling is tough with some serious climbs but the rewarding views of the coastline make the effort well worth it. There may be opportunity for a short beach walk and along the way we will enjoy a picnic lunch. There are options to visit Cathedral Caves or to walk to one of the many beautiful waterfalls in the area. McLean Falls are one of these and are located at the end of the road where we stay tonight (a 10 min drive is the best access). Catlins McLean Falls Motels & Holiday Park (or similar) 9 Rewcastle Rd, Chaslands Cycle Distance: Kaka Point to McLean Falls 62 km / 35.5 miles DAY 8 9 JANUARY 2018: McLean Falls to Bluff; ferry to Stewart Island Our cycling route today skirts the beautiful and undiscovered Catlins Forest Park and still more of the coastline. The roads are quiet and the scenery continues to be diverse as we gradually leave the spectacular coastline further in our wake. Before we start riding though, we will detour into beautiful Curio Bay where we visit a petrified forest on the shore. If we are lucky we will see rare Hectors Dolphins, Fur Seals and Yellow-Eyed Penguins while walking on the beach. There may even be time for a quick swim for the brave. We will have a picnic lunch en route today and although it would be easy to linger and enjoy our last day in the Catlins we must keep moving as we are on a bit of a schedule to meet the late afternoon ferry in Bluff. This one hour journey takes us across Foveaux Strait to remote Stewart Island where we spend the next two nights. Bay Motel 9 Dundee St, Stewart Island Cycle Distance: Optional if time permits - McLean Falls to Curio Bay 32 km / 20 miles Curio Bay to Bluff km / 64 miles Adventure South - Janet Oldham 7/20/2016 2:50:32 PM
DAY 9 10 JANUARY 2018: Stewart Island Known as the land of glowing skies Stewart Island is part of the Rakiura National Park, providing some wonderful hiking, bird watching (one of the few places in New Zealand where you can see Kiwis in the wild) and kayaking opportunities. We are based in the small village of Oban surrounded by densely forested hills descending to a coastline of rocky outcrops and creamy golden beaches. Today is free for your own explorations, wanderings or just relaxing and getting a feel for the laid back pace of island life. There is no cycling today. Bay Motel 9 Dundee St, Stewart Island meals: B DAY JANUARY 2018: Ferry to Bluff; to Manapouri We board an early morning ferry for the one hour journey back to Bluff this morning. Our vehicle will meet us and transfer us beyond the traffic of Invercargill, New Zealand s southern most city. After a day off the bikes it is time to put in some pedal power once again as we cycle north through farmland and beech-forests. Small communities dot the landscape as we make our way towards Clifden with its historic suspension bridge. Our ride takes us through an ever-changing landscape. The productive pastures of Southland farm country are replaced by the stark arid mountains of the wildest and most pristine part of the far south. As we reach Manapouri we are dwarfed by the mountains looming all around us and there is no question that we are on the edge of the wonderfully remote Fiordland National Park. (Note - Manapouri is in a stunning location; however, it is a small town and you should expect your accommodation to be simple but clean and comfortable) Manapouri Lakeview Motor Inn (or similar) 68 Cathedral Dr, Manapouri Cycle Distance 141 km / 87.5 miles DAY JANUARY 2018: Manapouri; board yacht for Doubtful Sound After the strenuous ride yesterday we have a leisurely morning. We will stretch our legs with a walk on part of the Kepler Track, one of New Zealand s Great Walks (so named for their stand-out scenery and special significance as natural wilderness environments). At noon we rendezvous with the crew of the Navigator, a luxurious boat that will be our home for the night. We cruise out into the beautiful Doubtful Sound, formed by glaciers and far less-visited than the more well known and more accessible Milford Sound. We have opportunities to go kayaking or on a nature tour to meet dolphins and fur seals. Then relax into an evening of entertainment, fine food and comfortable sleep in our private cabins. In the heart of the wilderness of the Fiordland National Park we are constantly surrounded by magnificent views of the mountains, the sunset is superb and we feel quite insignificant amongst this grandeur. Accommodation Real Journeys Navigator (luxury yacht) Walk distance: Adventure South - Janet Oldham 7/20/2016 2:50:32 PM
DAY JANUARY 2018: Return from Doubtful Sound; to Te Anau After a great on-board breakfast our boat returns us to shore and our waiting tandems. A gentle afternoon ride takes us to Te Anau, from where we have the option to cycle along the Eglington Valley through beech forest and tussock river flats, for some more superb mountain vistas, or just meander around the shores of Lake Te Anau overlooked by its own mountains. Accommodation Distinction Luxmore Hotel (or similar) 64 Lakefront Drive, Te Anau Cycle Distance: Manapouri to Te Anau - 21 km /13 miles Optional distance - Fiordland National Park boundary to Knob s Flat - 30 km / 18.5 miles meals: B,D DAY JANUARY 2018: Te Anau to Queenstown After an easier day yesterday we can again test ourselves with a longer ride today. The native red tussock-covered hills around the township of Te Anau change to rural land once again with sheep dotting the pastures like cotton wool. We farewell Fiordland National Park as we head towards Queenstown, the final destination for our journey. We stop out of town to avoid the busy road alongside Lake Wakatipu and load up our bikes for the last short section into the bustling adventure hub of Queenstown. Stronger riders can be challenged by the possibility of another metric century ride today; for the rest the sag wagon is always available. After checking into our accommodation, dinner is at leisure this evening anywhere you choose. There is something for everyone s palate in Queenstown. Scenic Circle Aurum Hotel & Suites (or similar) 27 Stanley St, Queenstown Cycle Distance: Te Anau to Kingston km / 79 miles Shorter Option: Mossburn to Kingston 67km / 42 miles meals: B,L DAY JANUARY 2018: Queenstown to Glenorchy return For our final day of cycling we take a scenic but challenging (lots of hills) morning ride west along the shores of Lake Wakatipu to the small village of Glenorchy for lunch. We drive back to Queenstown in the early afternoon to allow some time for you to explore this exciting town. There are a multitude of activities to indulge your inner adrenalin junkie (such as paragliding, luge, zip-line, jet boating or the infamous bungy jump) or you may wish to enjoy something a little tamer (such as a gondola ride, a steam boat ride on the historic TSS Earnslaw or a stroll around the lake foreshore). There are also plenty of shops for that last minute retail therapy or you may wish to pack up your bike if you Adventure South - Janet Oldham 7/20/2016 2:50:32 PM
have an early flight tomorrow. (Bike cases will be waiting at our accommodation when we arrive in Queenstown.) Whatever takes our fancy, we will meet in the evening for a final celebration dinner to reflect on our adventures from the last two weeks. Scenic Circle Aurum Hotel & Suites (or similar) 27 Stanley St, Queenstown Cycle Distance: Queenstown to Glenorchy 46 km / 28.5 miles DAY JANUARY 2018: Trip concludes Queenstown It is time for a sad farewell as trip arrangements end after breakfast this morning. There will be one group transfer to the airport, the timing of which will be determined by the most common flight departure time. (If you depart at any other time please make your own way to the airport. Shuttles, buses and taxis are readily available.) From the Pacific Island beaches and rolling farmlands in the north, to the volcanic plateau and then onto the soaring mountains within view of the sea in the south, and the sub Antarctic islands that dot the South Island coastline, the contrasts are many. The South Island is the 12th largest island in the world. The west coast is dominated by the Southern Alps, which contain more mountains than the European Alps altogether, and home to New Zealand s highest peak, Aoraki Mount Cook (3754m / 12,316 ft). The Main Divide, the chain of peaks that forms the backbone of the Alps from Arthur s Pass to Fiordland, splits the South Island into east and west. Several ice ages, and the fact that two continental plates are sliding past each other forming the Southern Alps, means that the scenery is as rugged as the New Zealand fauna and flora is unique. The largest city in the South Island is Christchurch. The North Island is the smaller of the two main islands of New Zealand. Its northern location means it enjoys a warmer, more temperate climate than much of the South Island, and is much more vastly populated. The centre of the island is primarily a volcanic landscape with vast forests, volcanic peaks, and picturesque lakes. The eastern side of the island is covered with vineyards. Auckland, also known as the City of Sails, is the largest city of New Zealand and found on the North Island. With a population of 4.0 million people, the wilderness areas of New Zealand are many as most Kiwis now live in an urban situation near the coast. The Maori are the indigenous people of the land and they named it Aotearoa Land of the Long White Cloud upon their arrival 1000 years ago. Europeans settled in the early 1800s and the country is alive today with a market driven economy and a blend of European and Asia/Pacific influences to create a buoyant South Pacific culture. climate As a general rule, November to April are the most ideal months for travelling in New Zealand s stunning outdoors. One of the most important things travellers need to know about the New Adventure South - Janet Oldham 7/20/2016 2:50:32 PM
Zealand climate is that it s a maritime climate, as opposed to the continental climate typical of larger landmasses. Thanks to its position in the path of the Roaring 40s and mountainous terrain, New Zealand s weather can frequently change with amazing rapidity. Because the weather can change so unexpectedly you should be prepared for sudden changes in temperature and weather conditions. This basically means having a good waterproof jacket and some warm clothing. You don t need to bring your winter wardrobe but a good fleece/jumper and good thermals are a must. The temperature during the South Island summers range from ºC, with a pleasant 40 50% humidity. Higher altitudes are always considerably cooler and snowfall is not uncommon even in summer. The Southern Alps act as a barrier to the moisture laden winds coming west across the Tasman Sea, creating a wet climate on the west side of the mountains and a drier climate on the east side. The geography also creates a wind pattern, which can in summer be very hot, dry and fierce. Maximum temperatures we may encounter range up to 30 C. Minimum temperatures expected in the Southern Alps in Summer time are around 5 C. Weather is an integral facet of any mountain range and getting to understand and work with this major environmental factor is what will make you more prepared for your tour any questions about what to expect on your tour talk to one of our sales team. a typical day Each day will be different but you can expect to make the most of every daylight hour. Most days will involve a combination of cycling and travel time, depending on our destination for the evening. Intense cycling days are usually followed by an easier cycling day or a rest day. On rest days there will be options to relax completely, do some walking to give your cycling muscles a break or for the really hardy there may also be some more cycling on offer. Meals will mainly be at your hotel/motel/on board a boat or at a nearby cafe or restaurant. There will be occasional picnic lunches prepared by your guides. dietary requirements Provided we are advised in advance of your departure we are able to cater for vegetarian diets and can assist with medically recommended diets (allergies and intolerances). Please ensure you discuss your requirements with us well in advance (at least 1 month prior to your trip) to determine whether we can cater to such dietary requirements on your chosen adventure. Please note that options are likely to be limited in very remote locations or alternatives may be more expensive or unavailable. There may be times when those with special requirements may need to provide their own food. We are unable to guarantee a peanut free or allergen free trip, and therefore, we strongly encourage that travellers with life threatening or severe allergies take all necessary medical precautions to prepare for the possibility of exposure. Passengers must travel with all necessary medications for food allergies and be capable of self administering these medications. pre and post tour accommodation Pre tour accommodation in Christchurch and post tour accommodation in Queenstown can be arranged at the group hotels. Please note that availability is extremely tight during December and January as it is peak holiday season in New Zealand. We strongly recommend making your arrangements well in advance to avoid missing out. You can book online directly with the hotels; alternatively we are happy to assist. what you carry You will need to carry your own personal items while cycling, such as a light rain jacket, sunscreen, water bottle, sunglasses.
