3 Introduction The Department of Conservation (DOC) manages over 200 vehicle and boat accessible camping areas on conservation land throughout New Zealand for you to enjoy. Choose from lush forest, lake shores, to sandy or pebbled beach settings. Conservation Campsites are a place to relax, enjoy and explore the great outdoors. Pelorus Bridge, DOC Great Walk campsites All the Great Walk tracks (except Milford) offer backcountry camping nearby. There are nearly 60 Great Walk campsites to choose from. They offer basic facilities including toilets, hand washing sinks and a water supply. Some have picnic tables and cooking shelters. Bookings are usually required: greatwalksbookings@doc.govt.nz or go to DOC Visitor Centres. Information about Great Walk campsites is found in Great Walk brochures and in the Backcountry Campsite List. What to expect Different sorts of facilities Serviced Campsites (S) have a wide range of facilities and services. Flush toilets, tap water, kitchen/cooking bench, hot showers, rubbish collection and road access for all types of vehicles. Laundry facilities, barbecues, fireplaces, cookers and picnic tables may be available. Standard Campsites (ST) have a more limited range of facilities and services. Toilets (usually of the composting or pit variety) water supply (tap, stream, or lake) and vehicle or boat access. Wood barbeques and fireplaces, showers (cold), picnic tables, a cooking shelter and rubbish bins may be provided. Basic Campsites (B) have very limited facilities so you need to be fully self-sufficient. There are basic toilets and water from a tank, stream or lake. Access may be by road or boat. Backcountry campsites (BC) have toilets and water supply which may be from a stream. They may have picnic tables, cooking shelters or fire places. Campsite fees Fees are generally charged per person, per night and reflect the level of facilities and services provided. 4 Booking and paying fees Booking is required for all Serviced and some Standard campsites in peak season. If a booking is required it is noted. A camp manager or warden will collect your fees. Some Self registration envelope campsites can be booked online Where bookings are not required, pay your fees via the self registration system. Self-registration campsites operate on a first come first served basis. To self-register deposit the appropriate fee in the envelope provided and place it in a box at the registration stand. Place the receipt section on your vehicle or tent. DOC rangers patrol camping areas and will check that fees have been paid. All campsites in this brochure have toilets Water from tap. Unless specified, this water is not treated. You may wish to boil or treat it before drinking. Campfires permitted. Be aware of fire bans and higher fire risk during summer months. Contact the local DOC office or Council for details. Follow the on-site signs. Fires are not permitted. Dogs permitted. Dogs and other pets are permitted in only a few conservation areas see page 68 for a list. Keep your dog under control at all times and clean up after it. Dogs permitted on a leash at all times. Motorboating free area. Motorboats are not permitted on some lakes. Jetskis prohibited Dump Station. Be responsible; always use a designated dump station. Facilities may include toilet, water supply, showers, picnic tables, kitchens and pathways. Rodent free area. Please check your boat/ kayak/gear thoroughly for stowaways. No seeds. 5 New Zealand Motor Caravan Association The New Zealand Motor Caravan Association (NZMCA) offers a 12 month pass for members ($150) which can be used at most vehicle accessible Standard campsites (not Serviced and some other campsites where stated in the brochure). Passes are sold by the NZMCA: Ph , Fax , enquiries@nzmca.org.nz Motor-home and caravan use Caravans or motor-homes are a great way to explore the outdoors. Dispose of all waste water at a dump station (location information is available from visitor centres or Limit generator use between 8 am and 9 pm. Always drive along formed roads. When freedom camping the motorhome or caravan must be self-contained and able to meet the ablutionary and sanitary needs of the occupants for three days. For more information visit Enjoying the outdoors safely For short or long walks, rides and other activities be well prepared for all types of weather and conditions. Have a first aid kit and survival kit and know what to do if things go wrong. Collect brochures: Planning a trip in the backcountry? Going Bush? Hypothermia and Survival from DOC visitor centres or and learn to plan and prepare for a safe and enjoyable adventure. Camping Care Code Be a careful camper and practice no trace camping Choose your campsite carefully; set up your camp on firm, high or sandy ground. Only camp in designated areas. Be tidy and always leave campsites clean. Take your rubbish with you if bins are not provided. Food scraps attract vermin. Use a cooker, fireplace or BBQ. Light fires only where permitted, collect dead wood and keep the fire small. Soak the fire with water before you go. Detergents, soap and toothpaste can harm aquatic and marine life. Use biodegradable products and wash in a container well away from water. Always use toilets provided. When using a motor-home or caravan outside conservation campsites it must be selfcontained. Campgrounds are social places but everyone needs some rest and relaxation. Please respect the rights of others for quiet enjoyment of the outdoors. Limit generator use between 9pm and 8am. Pay fees to help keep campsites available in the future. Always thoroughly clean your equipment before and after trips to minimise spreading weeds and diseases. Protect native plants and animals. 6 Nelson / Marlborough Nelson / Marlborough The Nelson/Marlborough region offers some of the best camping opportunities in New Zealand. Picturesque bays, clear mountain streams, lakes and plenty of sunshine. Some campsites are only accessible by boat but most are easily accessible by car. Information about backcountry campsites in the region is available on the DOC website and at visitor centres. 1. Booking: Required 1 Dec 10 Feb. Bookings should be made during the first week of July; a ballot system is used to allocate sites. At all other times register at the camp office. Ph , totaranui@doc.govt.nz, or see the website. This large campground takes up to 850 campers and is a great base for activities. Relax on the beach, swim, kayak fish or explore the tracks nearby. The Totoranui entrance to the Abel Tasman Coast Track also starts here. Note: Campsite has filtered water and public phone. Totaranui Great Walk campsite is located at this campground. 7 Nelson / Marlborough 2. Canaan Downs, Canaan Downs Scenic Reserve Nelson / Marlborough 4. Siberia, Kahurangi National Park Sites: 10 Canaan Downs, DOC Getting there: From SH 60 on the Takaka Hill Rd turn off at Canaan Rd and follow it 11 km to end., steep and windy. Icy in winter. Located near the entrances to a number of tracks in Abel Tasman National Park. Mountain biking, walking and tramping activities are all nearby. Opportunities for experienced cavers also. 3. Cobb River, Kahurangi National Park Sites: 40 Siberia campsite, DOC Getting there: Turn off SH 61 at Tapawera. Follow Rd to Bushend Rd then Wangapeka River Rd.. Road not suitable for caravans and motorhomes. The Dart River ford crossing can be impassable after heavy rain. Walking access via swing bridge. Campsite adjoins Wangapeka River at the start of the Wangapeka Track. The river is popular for fly fishing. Take repellent for ferocious sand flies. 5. Courthouse Flat, Kahurangi National Park Sites: 25 Courthouse Flat, DOC Cobb Valley, DOC Getting there: Turn off SH 60, at Upper Takaka and follow the Cobb Dam Rd for 35 km. The campsite is at the top end of the Cobb Reservoir. Access: Unsealed, steep and windy. One way in some sections. Icy and 4WD only in winter. Camp beside the Cobb River which offers good swimming and fishing. Courthouse Flat, flickr Getting there: Turn off SH 61 at Tapawera. Follow Rd to Bushend Rd then Wangapeka River Rd to end.. Road not suitable for caravans and motorhomes. The Dart River ford crossing can be impassable after heavy rain. Walking access via swing bridge. The drive to the campsite beside a historic goldfield is scenic. Nearby activities include caving, gold fossicking, picnicking, hunting and walking. Take repellant for sand flies

West Bay, Nelson Lakes National Park Sites: 10 Tent sites: 38 Powered sites: 19 Fees: $7 / $3.50 non powered $12 / $6 powered West Bay, DOC Kawatiri, DOC Getting there: Kawatiri Junction, corner SH 63 and SH 6 NW of St Arnaud. Access: Sealed Camp at the historic Kawatiri Railway Station site. Explore the old rail bridge, tunnel and station. Walk, fish or picnic. 7. Lake Rotoroa, Nelson Lakes National Park Getting there: Lake Rotoiti, West Bay. Just off SH 63 on Mt Robert Rd, W of St Arnaud. Access: Sealed Booking: Essential in peak season. Ph or nelsonlakesao@doc.gov.tnz Easily accessible camp within a remote picturesque setting. Canoe, fish or swim on the lake or walk the lakeside track. Note: Open mid Dec to early Feb. See for more information. 9. Kerr Bay, Nelson Lakes National Park Sites: 10 Fee: $4 / $1.50 Lake Rotoroa, D Parr Tent sites: 30 Powered sites: 9 Fees: $10 / $5 non powered $12 / $6 powered Kerr Bay, DOC Getting there: Lake Rotoroa, off SH 6, E of Murchison, following Gowan Valley Rd to end. Access: Sealed Camp surrounded by native bush. Explore tall forests and the lakeshore, or tramp in the D Urville and Sabine Valleys. Boating, kayaking. Four wheel driving and mountainbiking nearby. Take repellant for ferocious sand flies. Getting there: Lake Rotoiti, Kerr Bay. St Arnaud off SH 63. Access: Sealed Booking: Essential in peak season. Ph or nelsonlakesao@doc.gov.tnz Lake side camping within walking distance of St Arnaud. Canoe, fish or swim in the lake. Note: Washing machines / clothes dryer on site. 9 Nelson / Marlborough 10. Coldwater Stream, Rainbow Conservation Area Sites: 8 Coldwater Stream, D Parr Getting there: Turn off SH 63 east of St Arnaud. Follow road beside Wairau River for 46 km to Coldwater Stream, just above Hell s Gate in the Wairau Valley. Accessible from Hanmer Springs via the Hanmer Rainbow Rd. Access: High clearance 4WD. Gravel road with stream fords This isolated campsite is a great base camp for 4WD and mountain biking activities. Trout fishing or kayak in the river. Note: Toll Rd from St Arnaud to Coldwater Stream is open 28 Dec to 1 Apr. At other times contact Star Holdings Ltd Ph during office hours. Accessible from Hanmer Springs all year round, weather conditions permitting. South Marlborough 11. Lake Tennyson, Lake Tennyson Scenic Reserve Molesworth Station Molesworth Station is New Zealand s largest farm park. Drive or cycle along the road and fish in the river.. Not suitable for vehicles with trailers, caravans, buses or other vehicles over seven metres long. Note: The Molesworth - Acheron Road is open only in summer from 28 Dec to 1 Apr. Weather conditions and fire danger can close it at any time. Ph to check it is open. Tour operators take tours at other times of year. Their details are found on the DOC website. 12. Cobb Cottage, Molesworth Station Nelson / Marlborough Molesworth, D Parr Getting there: Turn off SH 1 into Awatere Valley Rd. Camp near the original Cobb cottage built in 1885 close to the Molesworth Farm Park boundary. Sites: Acheron Accommodation House, Molesworth Station Lake Tennyson, DOC Getting there: Turn off SH 63, E of St Arnaud. Follow Wairau River Rd until it meets the Clarence River. Alternatively drive from Hanmer via the Hanmer Rainbow Rd. Access: From Hanmer Springs all year gravel road suitable for 2WD vehicles. Not suitable for vehicles over 7m long. Toll Rd from St Arnaud to Lake Tennyson is open open 28 Dec to 1 Apr. At other times contact Star Holdings Ltd Ph during office hours. Trout fishing, kayaking, boating and walking opportunities. Acheron, D Parr Getting there: Clarence Valley Rd via Jacks Pass. Camp at the site of the former Acheron Accommodation House, once used as an overnight carriage stop now an historic site

10 Nelson / Marlborough Nelson / Marlborough 14. Marfells Beach, Marfells Beach Recreation Reserve Sites: 30 Marfells Beach, DOC Getting there: From SH 1 follow Marfells Beach Rd to the end. S side of Lake Grassmere. 40 km S of Blenheim. Access: Sealed Camp beside a gravel beach not far from Lake Grassmere Salt Works. Fish, boat or walk from here. 15. Kowhai Point, Kowhai Point Scenic Reserve Sites: 9 Kowhai Point, R Mitchinson Getting there: Adjacent SH 63, Wash Bridge, Wairau River Access: Sealed Camp next to the Wairau River. Mill Flat, Mount Richmond Forest Park Rarangi, DOC Mill Flat, R Mitchinson Getting there: Pine Valley, 22 km along Northbank Rd, NW of Blenheim, off SH 6 Access: 4WD access only for last 2 km This isolated campsite is in a grassy clearing surrounded with nearby beech forest. Picnic, walk, swim, tramp, fish and hunt with a permit Getting there: Turn off SH 1 at Tuamarina, 8 km N of Blenheim, into Hunter Rd. Drive to Rarangi Beach Rd, turn left into Port Underwood Rd. Follow coast to Rarangi. Access: Sealed road Camp next to a beach. Fish, walk, picnic, surf or walk to Monkey Bay for a better swimming beach. 17. Onamalutu, Onamalutu Scenic Reserve 19. Whites Bay, Whites Bay Recreation Reserve Sites: 50 Fee: $6/ $1.50 Onamalutu, DOC Getting there: Turn off SH 6, south of Havelock at Northbank Rd. Follow for approxooimately 6 km, turn right into Onamautu Rd. Camp is 7 km along the Rd Access: Sealed and some gravel This campsite is set in remnant podocarp forest. The start of the Wakamarina Tramping Track is 8 km away. Whites Bay, W Chippendale Getting there: Turn off SH 1 at Tuamarina, 8 km N of Blenheim, into Hunter Rd. Drive to Rarangi Beach Rd, turn left into Port Underwood Rd. Follow coast to Whites Bay. Access: Sealed This camp has lovely scenery and is close to a surf beach. Go walking, fishing, swimming or kayaking from here. Note: No vehicles on beach

Pelorus Bridge, Pelorus Bridge Scenic Reserve Sites: 8 Robin Hood Bay, W Chippendale Tent sites: 32 Powered Sites: 14 Fee: $10 / $5 non powered $11/$5 powered Pelorus Bridge, D Parr Getting there: Turn off SH 1 at Tuamarina, 8 km north of Blenheim, into Hunter Rd. Drive E to Rarangi Beach Rd, turning left into Port Underwood Rd. Follow to the campsite. from Whites Bay. Not recommended for caravans, steep. Camp next to the beach. There is a surf beach nearby. Watch for Hector s dolphins. There is good recreational fishing. Safe small boat launching off beach. 21. Butchers Flat, Mt Richmond Forest Park Dog Permit required DOC Picton, ph Butchers Flat, DOC Getting there: From SH 6, 9 km W of Havelock, turn south into Wakamarina Rd at Canvastown and follow to end., narrow, unsealed, winding This grassy flat camping area was once a gold mining area. Fossick for gold, walk, picnic or swim. Getting there: SH 6, 18km W of Havelock Access: Sealed Booking: Required ph or p.b.cafe@xtra.co.nz Two camping areas beside the Pelorus River. Swim, boat, fish, walk or mountain bike tracks nearby. Note: NZMCA pass is not valid. Marlborough Sounds Ideal for swimming, fishing, kayaking, boating, sailing, diving, walking, tramping, mountain biking and hunting. Campsites are set amongst lush forest or beside tranquil bays. The bush, rich with tree ferns, nikau palms, kiekie and manuka, is home to many native birds. D Urville Island (Rangitoto ki te Tonga), D Urville Island Scenic Reserve (5 campsites) Access: Boat only from Nelson, French Pass or Havelock. Water taxis are available. Airstrip available for small private aircraft: $10 per landing, then walk or mountain bike to camp. Campsites are within sheltered bays and perfect for fishing, boating and kayaking. 23. Harvey Bay, Tennyson Inlet Scenic Reserve Dog permit required, DOC Picton, ph Boat access only Sites: 2 Moawhitu Camp L Selby-Neal Sites: 25 Getting there: Greville Harbour, D Urville Island Access: Water taxi from French Pass to Kapowai, then follow the road to Moawhitu which is about 1hr by 4WD. Stunning, remote campsite adjacent to a surf beach with good fishing, hunting, tramping and mountain biking nearby. 25. South Arm, D Urville Island Scenic Reserve Harvey Bay, P Brady Getting there: Turn off SH 6 N of Rai Valley at Opouri Rd. Then turn into Tennyson Inlet Rd and follow to Harvey Bay. Access: Sealed road steep winding and narrow, or boat access 2 km from Duncan Bay A large, flat, sheltered camping area which makes a great base for exploring the Tennyson Inlet or to walk the nearby Nydia Track. Boat access only Sites: 5 South Arm, K Kelly Getting there: South Arm, Port Hardy, D Urville Island 26. Penguin Bay, D Urville Island Scenic Reserve 29. Elaine Bay, Elaine Bay Recreation Reserve Boat access only Sites: 2 Penguin Bay, P Brady Getting there: Penguin Bay, East Coast, D Urville Island 27. Lucky Bay, D Urville Island Scenic Reserve Elaine Bay, P Brady Boat access only Sites: 2 D Urville Island. DOC Getting there: Turn off SH 6 N of Rai Valley into Croisilles French Pass Rd. Continue through Okiwi Bay and after approximately 10 km turn into Elaine Bay Rd. Follow to end. Access: Sealed narrow, winding road This campsite offers a good base for exploring Pelorus Sound by boat or walking nearby tracks. Note: NZMCA pass not valid 23 Dec 1 Feb. Tawa Bay, Tennyson Inlet Scenic Reserve Sites: 16 Fee: See note below Boat access only Sites: 2 Fee: $6/$150 Tawa Bay, P Brady French Pass, D Parr Getting there: Turn off SH 6 north of Rai Valley into Croisilles French Pass Rd. Follow to the end, approx 45 km. Access: Sealed and gravel, narrow winding road, or boat access Booking: Required 1 Dec - 28 Feb, long weekends and Easter. Ph This scenic camp is a good base for boating and fishing. From a nearby viewpoint you can watch the waters moving through French Pass. Note: 1 Dec - 28 Feb $7 / $3.50 (Other times $6 / $1.50) NZMCA pass not valid 23 Dec 1 Feb. 31. Waiona Bay, Deep Bay Scenic Reserve Getting there: Tennyson Inlet, Pelorus Sound. Very scenic campsite suitable for kayaks and boating activities. 33. Kauauroa Bay, Kenny Island Scenic Reserve Boat access only Sites: 2 Kauauroa Bay, P Brady Getting there: Kauauroa Bay, Tawhitinui Reach, Outer Pelorus Sound. Campsite for boaties and sea kayakers in a peaceful setting. 34. Waimaru, Waimaru Recreation Reserve Boat access only Sites: 2 Waiona Bay, DOC Getting there: Waiona Bay, Apuau Reach, Pelorus Sound. In striking surroundings, the campground is used mostly by kayakers. Other activities include hunting, boating and walking. Sites: 30 Waimaru, P. Brady Getting there: Follow Queen Charlotte Drive to Kenepuru Rd. Turn into Manaroa Rd, then Clova Bay Rd to end. - long, narrow, winding road Isolated and a good base for water activities or fishing

W Abel Getting there: Inner Pelorus Sound Enjoy short walks and water based activities at this campsite which is sheltered from the prevailing north west winds. 36. Nydia, Nydia Bay Scenic Reserve, Pelorus Sound Getting there: Inner Pelorus / Kenepuru Sound Popular with sea kayakers with a small, rocky beach. 39. Moetapu Bay, Mahau Sound Access: Boat or walk from Nydia Track Sites: 8 North Nydia, DOC Getting there: Nydia Bay in Pelorus Sound Sheltered scenic bay with opportunities for walking, biking and boating. 37. It is a private commerical plantation forestry roads are closed to the public. Camp next to the Grey River. Walk in the native beech forest, or to the summit of Mt Grey for spectacular views. There are short walks, day or overnight walks from here, white-water kayaking, windsurfing and swimming opportunities in the river or at nearby Scotts Beach. Dogs not permitted in Kahurangi NP or on the Heaphy Track. Note: Max 2 nights consecutive stay. 2. Lyell, Upper Buller Gorge Scenic Reserve Getting there: Off SH 7 on Slab Hut Creek Rd. 10 km south of Reefton. Once a gold mining area this is now a popular picnicking and camping site. The campsite is well drained but be prepared for West Coast downpours. Try gold fossicking in the creek, or mountain bike the road. Close to Reefton township and a great place for exploring Victoria Forest Park walks. 4. Marble Hill, Lewis Pass Scenic Reserve Dogs must be under control at all times. Sites: 50 Lyell, DOC Marble Hill, DOC Getting there: Beside SH 6 in the Upper Buller George, 10 km northeast of Inangahua. Access: Sealed The site of the historic gold-rush town of Lyell, this large grassed campsite is easily accessible. Walk to the battery and take an alternative loop back to the campsite. Getting there: Beside SH 7, 6.5 km east of Springs Junction. Access: Sealed Explore the Lewis Pass area from here. There is a short walk to the sluice box, or follow the Lake Daniells Track. Hans Bay, Lake Kaniere Scenic Reserve Lake Mahinapua, DOC Getting there: 10 km S of Hokitika turn off SH 6 into Lake Mahinapua access Rd, opposite the hotel. 300m to roadend. Camp beside Lake Mahinapua within forest surroundings. A popular overnight and day stop. Historically paddle steamers used the lake as a main access waterway up and down the coast. Bike, walk, tramp or hunt to explore area. Note: Flush toilet in summer. This historic site is protected by law the removal of any material is illegal. 10. Macetown, Macetown Historic Reserve St Bathans, DOC Getting there: From SH 85, NE of Alexandra at Becks follow Loop Rd N until Fish Pond Rd. Access: Sealed Camp in a remote and historic area. Explore St Bathans township or mountain bike the Central Otago Rail Trail. 12. Homestead, Oteake Conservation Park Sites: 36 Road to Macetown, DOC Getting there: Follow Macetown Road from Arrowtown. 15 km up the Arrow River from Arrowtown. Access: Rough, gravel, 4WD road with 23 river crossings at times impassible. Check the DOC Queenstown Visitor Centre for access and weather conditions before you set out. Camp in one of Otago s most intact historic goldfield towns. Interpretation panels tell stories of the site. Walk, bike or 4WD around the township or up the valley to the Homeward Bound stamper. Note: This historic site is protected by law and the removal of any material is illegal. Hawkdun Range, DOC Getting there: From SH 85, turn onto the Ranfurly end of Loop Rd (St Bathans), follow for 6.5km. Turn into Hawkdun Runs Rd and follow for 15 km to campsite., with two unbridged fords. Winter access 4WD only. This isolated campsite is the ideal base for mountain biking, hunting, fishing and tramping in nearby St Bathans and Hawkdun Ranges

Camp in a sheltered area surrounded by beech and podocarp forest. River, walking and tramping nearby. 14. Trotters Gorge, Trotters Gorge Scenic Reserve Dogs must be kept under strict control Sites: 10 Fee: $6 per site Getting there: Approx 3 km S of Moeraki, turn W off SH 1 into Horse Range Rd or, north end of Palmerston, turn on to Horse Range Rd Access: Sealed A quiet family campsite in a bush setting close to the Moeraki Boulders. Connects with two riverside tracks. 15. Tawanui, Catlins Conservation Park Dogs must be kept under strict control Sites: 60 Fee: $6 per site Glencoe, DOC Trotters, DOC Fishing at Tawanui, T Perrett Getting there: Turn off SH 1 at Balcutha. Drive south to Owaka. Follow Owaka Valley Rd for 10 km, turn into Catlins Rd and follow to end. Access: Narrow and gravel This isolated campsite is in a clearing beside the river. Day walk the Catlins River Track (5 hr) through silver beech forest. Dogs must be kept under strict control Sites: 40 Fee: $6 per site Getting there: Turn off SH 1 at Balcutha. Drive south past Owaka until Ratanui turnoff. Follow Purakaunui Falls Rd, to Long Point Rd, then follow Purakaunui Bay Rd to end. Access: Narrow and gravel Camp on the coast. Striking cliff faces can be seen and Purakaunui Falls are not far. There is a good surf beach south of the camp. Cosgrove Island, a wildlife refuge, is off the coast and Jacks Blowhole is 10 km to the north. Freedom camping Remember freedom camping is only permitted with vehicles which are self-contained and have a three day toilet and grey water storage facility. Purakaunui Bay, DOC With so many free and low-fee Conservation Campsites you don t really need to freedom camp, but if you do, ask at visitor centres for the local government rules that apply to freedom camping in that area. 32 Southland Southland 1-10 Fiordland National Park The Milford Road takes you to the heart of Fiordland National Park from Te Anau, a distance of 119 km. The road is sealed and takes about two hours to drive without stops, but there are many scenic sites so take your time. There are 10 campsites; most not far off the highway. Collect information about the road, walks, other activities and the flora and fauna from the Fiordland National Park Visitor Centre in Te Anau before you head down the road. 1. Kiosk Creek got its name from a kiosk that once existed here run by the wife of a road worker on this site. There are spectacular views of glacial moraine deposits. 7. Smithy Creek, Fiordland National Park Sites: 6 Fee: $5/$2.50 Sites: 2 Fee: $5/$2.50 Mackay Creek, DOC Getting there: Milford Rd, 53 km north of Te Anau.. Take care, poor traffic visibility off highway A quiet campsite with views of the Eglinton Valley. Fly fish in the river or explore nearby short walks. 5. Deer Flat, Fiordland National Park Smithy Creek, DOC Getting there: Milford Rd, 67 km north of Te Anau. A small camping area between Knobs Flat and Lake Gunn. Not suitable for larger vehicles. 8. Upper Eglinton, Fiordland National Park Fee: $5/$2.50 Deer Flat, DOC Getting there: Milford Rd, 62 km north of Te Anau. Camp beside the Eglinton River in an open grassy area surrounded by small pockets of beech forest. Fly fish in the river. Suitable for larger vehicles. This is a river side campsite in a farmland area. There are walks and tramps from here or go horse riding, biking, hunting or on 4WD excursions. 13. Monowai, Fiordland National Park Lake Gunn, DOC Getting there: Milford Rd, 78 km N of Te Anau., not suitable for large vehicles. This small camping area is the most northern campsite along the Milford Rd beside the edge of Lake Gunn. Limited space. 11. Mavora Lakes, Mavora Park Conservation Area Sites: 5 Lake Monowai, W Hutchison Getting there: N of Clifden via SH 93, follow Clifden- Blackmount Rd, to Lake Monowai Rd to end. Enjoy this peaceful campsite beside Lake Monowai. Explore the tracks to Rodger Inlet and Green Lake huts or go fishing or boating. Sites: 60 Fee: $5 / $2.50 North Mavora Lake, Emily Atkinson Getting there: Off SH 94, 30 km N of Mossburn.
