Hendra Warning The Australian Veterinary Association is warning horse owners to take precautions against Hendra virus as the season for the infection approaches. AVA president, Dr Barry Smyth said that with Hendra cases on the rise, particularly in the eastern states, anyone working with horses should take caution around any sick horse. Our knowledge of how the Hendra virus is spread is still limited, and it is difficult to predict what effect the recent wet weather will have, Dr Smyth said. We do know that the Hendra virus is present in all flying fox populations and that the virus can shed at particular times with the fluid secretion of the flying fox including from saliva and urine. Common signs to look out for with Hendra infections in horses include respiratory distress, neurological problems, elevated body temperature (above 40 degrees), elevated heart rate and depression. However, it is important to be aware there are no specific signs of Hendra infection. National Volunteer Week (NVW) is the largest celebration of volunteers in Australia, and provides an opportunity to highlight the role of volunteers. Australian volunteers contribute more than 700 million hours of community service to so many areas of society, including community health care, heritage and arts, environment conservation, emergency services, education, social justice and sports. Manager Lee Watts says Every person has their own reasons for volunteering and all bring an range of skills to the job. Volunteers support this service in many ways including administration, reception and in the folding of the Bush Telegraph. I am truly grateful for all the time they give so freely. There are many volunteers that have played a role with the centre and I hope both past and present volunteers, staff and committee members will join us to celebrate. The usually quiet Rouchel Sports and Recreation Ground came alive when the Lane Cove cricketers visited to take on a team of local Rouchel residents in a fun game. The tradition first started more than 23 years ago when Pete Fellowes and friends created a weekend of fun for the boys. This year it was Lane Cove whose name will be embedded into the trophy as the winners quickly covered Rouchel s 143 runs in brilliant conditions. Many long time supporters pulled on their joggers for the spirited game along with some newcomers who enjoyed their taste of the entertainment. Made up of men from Lane Cove and Central Coast cricket clubs, the away team spent the weekend enjoying the hospitality of the small local community and will no doubt be back in 2013 for another great boys weekend away. 11 leisure & lifestyle Planning for Now, Tomorrow and the Future Jeremy Ward will be presenting his popular seminar The workshop will be of interest to those wanting to plan a long term positive and secure future for a person with developmental disability. It will be highly relevant for families (including adult brothers, sisters and extended family) and allies of people with disability as well as for workers who are considering the role they could play in supporting families with this planning. One of the most common concerns for families is uncertainty about the future for their Hollywood Hits the Hunter Upper Hunter s youth had a brush with Hollywood and international action sports starts last weekend, when the Big Air School event rolled into Muswellbrook and Aberdeen as part of National Youth Week. The event was made possible with the support of Xstrata Coal Mangoola and the Upper Hunter Shire Council, among the Big Air School coaching stars in attendance was the two-time world BMX record holder and movie stunt man, Rhys Kembler, who demonstrated some of the skills he used as stand-in stunt man for Paul Walker, the star of the hit action movie Fast & Furious. Alongside Rhys was international pro skater Niki6, who has appeared on the London, Barcelona and LA skate circuit as well as Australia s top two scooter riders, Dylan Scholes and Ben Thomas. This workshop will explore a range of issues and ideas around preparing and planning for the future and keeping a person with disability safe in the long term. As well as legal tools, participants will have the opportunity to hear about strategies such as developing a vision and building networks of support. The workshop will focus on whole of life planning, not service planning, and will discuss how the legal issues involved in planning for the future need to be integrated with the broader issues of developing a vision and planning for all aspects of life. There are no quick or easy solutions to planning for the future but there is much that families can do now.
