4 DAY 1: Wednesday 13th March, 2019 MELBOURNE TO SOUTH AUSTRALIA Welcome to our 7 day tour to the northern outback region of South Australia - it s a fascinating but mostly unknown part of the country. This morning we are picked up from home and taken to Melbourne Airport for the short flight to Adelaide. Upon our arrival, we are met by our O Shannessys touring coach and head for lunch. This afternoon, we make our way to Port Augusta for our first night s accommodation. OVERNIGHT: Standpipe Golf Motor Inn, PORT AUGUSTA DAY 2: Thursday 14th March, 2019 PORT AUGUSTA TO MARREE Refreshed, we are ready to head into the far north of South Australia beyond the famed Goyder s Line that was marked on the map in 1865 by Surveyor General George Woodroffe Goyder to delineate drought affected country. The line became an important factor in settlement planning in this State, being regarded as an indication of the limits of the lands considered safe for agricultural development. As we will see from the many ruins we pass on the Wilochra Plain, many early settlers didn t take Goyder s advice! An excellent example is Kanyaka Homestead just off the main road, 15 kilometres south of Hawker where we will make a stop this morning.

5 After lunch at Hawker we travel west of the Flinders Ranges with the magnificent Range rising up on our right. We pass through Parachilna, Copley and Lyndhurst before arriving in Marree where we will be based for two nights. Initially the area was known as Herrgott Springs, but when the town was surveyed in preparation for the coming of the railway it was given the name Marree. Marree is situated where the Oodnadatta Track meets the Birdsville Track. From its earliest days Marree provided a base for the Afghans and their camels and in 1872 a vital link in the Overland Telegraph line, connecting Adelaide with London and the rest of the world. When it became a railway terminal in 1884, Marree provided most of the transport services along the Birdsville and Oodnadatta Tracks. In 1981 the last train departed from Marree and the railway line has long been removed. We settle in to our accommodation, then meet up for nibbles before dinner. Celebrating 130 years the Marree Hotel is listed as one of the 10 iconic outback hotels. While here we take time to visit the Tom Kruse Gallery, an important tribute to the life of a truly remarkable Australian. Known as the Mailman of the Birdsville Track, Tom Kruse became a household name after he played himself in the 1954 award winning docudrama The Back of Beyond. The collection houses 180 photographs as well as framed letters, certificates, awards, a signed mailbag and the original grill and floorboard from his famous 1936 Leyland Badger. 6 DAY 3: Friday 15th March, 2019 LAKE EYRE AND THE PAINTED HILLS Today will be one to remember Excitement is building as we keep our eyes open for our air safari! Mid morning we board our scenic flights which will take us in convoy over Lake Eyre. We pass the Gibber Shelf on the western shoreline of Belt Bay. (the lowest point in Australia), Silcrete Island and some of the eroded peninsulas that jut out into the salt bed, Jackboot Bay and over the southern end of The Warburton Groove before flying over the Halligan Bay viewing station. We land at William Creek to stretch our legs, refuel and enjoy lunch at another iconic pub the William Creek Hotel. This afternoon, we fly over Anna Creek Station to the breathtaking Painted Hills, a collection of sandstone hills in an array of earthy outback colours that are only accessible and visible by air. The flight will be conducted at a height low. enough to experience the intricate details of the beautifully eroded shelf that once belonged to the great inland sea. We ll catch a glimpse of Oz Mineral s largest copper and gold mine, Prominent Hill before returning to Marree. OVERNIGHT: The Marree Hotel, MARREE

7 DAY 4: Saturday 16th March, 2019 TO RAWNSLEY PARK STATION, FLINDERS RANGES Before leaving Marree this morning, we take a tour with our hosts and learn all about the history, culture and amazing stories of how residents live in this isolated outback community. There are no power lines or mains water in the town, so the entire town is reliant on the water from the Great Artesian Basin and power supplied by the main town generator. We retrace our steps to Farina where we have morning tea from the coach. Farina was one of the towns settled early in the period of the opening of the outback by European settlers. We can explore the ruins, many of which have been stabilised and researched and imagine in your mind s eye the life they may have lived and the hardships they endured. We continue south, stopping for lunch, before making our way to the Jeff Morgan Art Gallery. Here we see the panorama artwork of the Flinders Ranges (33 metres in circumference) which is recognised as one of only 5 round panoramas in the world that has been painted as a realistic representation of what is actually seen. In addition to this unusual work of art, Jeff has extended the gallery to incorporate a second project entitled 'Outback on Canvas'. It will be a rewarding visit. From here, we skirt around Wilpena Pound to arrive at the Rawnsley Park Station set below the magnificent Rawnsley Bluff. Dinner tonight will be in the Woolshed Restaurant, an authentic Australian woolshed. The ever-changing menu makes the best of local produce, including Rawnsley s own lamb. 8 DAY 5: Sunday 17th March, 2019 RAWNSLEY PARK STATION This morning a local expert joins us for an insider s tour of this stunning National Park. The Flinders Ranges are well known for their wild flowers but it s the dramatic gorges and spectacular peaks that are the real highlights. We enjoy a packed lunch along the way then return to Rawnsley mid-afternoon. Wrap up warmly as late afternoon we ll drive to Pugilist Lookout for Sundowners (nibbles and drinks) as we watch the sun set. But our day s not over yet Back at Rawnsley Park, we can enjoy a lamb roast as there ll be a Lamb on the Spit for dinner (for those who don t eat red meat, chicken will be available, along with a Vegetarian option). OVERNIGHT: Rawnsley Park Station, FLINDERS RANGES DAY 6: Monday 18th March, 2019 RAWNSLEY PARK STATION TO BROKEN HILL Today, we travel through more historic South Australian towns like Cradock and Orroroo to Peterborough where we have our morning stop. We join the Barrier Highway, crossing the border to Broken Hill. We drive out to Living Desert and Sculpture Symposium on the western outskirts of the town, where twelve of the finest sculptors from around the world created this unusual attraction from large pieces of Wilcannia Sandstone. The arrangements of the stones is double colonnade which defines a special flow from the Pinnacles Hills to Fred Hollow s resting place in Bourke and provides one of the most spectacular views in the area. 9 Day 7: Tuesday 19th March, 2019 BROKEN HILL AND SILVERTON We ll tour the town today with the help of a locally based expert. We will hear about the history of Broken Hill and see some of the historic buildings the Broken Hill Court House built in 1889, the Broken Hill Trades Hall (1898) and the Broken Hill Town Hall Façade. One of the best views of the town is from the top of the Line of Lode at the Miners Memorial (listing the names of more than 800 people who have died working at the mine). No visit to Broken Hill would be complete without a visit to Pro Hart s Gallery and the Jack Absalom Gallery. We farewell our guide and head to Silverton, a virtual ghost town but a number of the historic buildings remain. It s also the site of many wellknown movies such as Mad Max 2, Wake in Fright and Priscilla Queen of the Desert. We have lunch at the Silverton Pub before heading back to Broken Hill. We have some time to explore Broken Hill before dinner at the motel this evening. OVERNIGHT: Desert Sand Motor Inn, BROKEN HILL DAY 8: Wednesday 20th March, 2019 BROKEN HILL TO MILDURA This morning, we take a look at another panorama The Big Picture within the Silver City Art Gallery. This was painted by local artist, Peter Anderson and is the world s largest acrylic painting on canvas that totally immerses visitors into the local landscape. The experience is breathtaking as we experience the sensation of walking into a painting as we gaze out to the distant Flinders Ranges, follow ancient river beds dotted with gum trees, see a massive thunderstorm unfolding in the desert and get a view of the Sculpture Symposium and Living Desert area to the west of Broken Hill. We the have some free time for a poke around the shops and to purchase lunch before heading to

10 Mildura this afternoon. This evening we board the PS Melbourne - one of the last working paddle-steamers on the Murray River. We enjoy dinner onboard while cruising the Mighty Murray. It will be great final night on tour! Lunch at own arrangements and cost OVERNIGHT: Best Western Chaffey International Motor Inn, MILDURA DAY 9: Thursday 21st March, 2019 HOMEWARD BOUND The Wimmera-Mallee region has become Australia s largest outdoor gallery with the creation of a silo art trail stretching 200kms and linking some of Victoria s smallest towns. We follow this trail, first to Patchewollock, where it is hard to miss the 35m high silo man - local sheep and grain farmer Nick Hulland. After a break in Hopetoun we continue to Rosebery and its silos painted to capture the character of the regions young female farmers and a quiet moment between man and horse. Continuing south we arrive in Brim and see the silos depicting an anonymous multi-generational quartet of farmers. We continue to Horsham for our lunch and arrive back in Melbourne late afternoon.
