Sandvik Mining and Rock Technology acknowledges Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the First Australians and the Traditional Custodians across Australia. We pay respect to the Elders of the past, present and future for maintaining culture, country and their spiritual connection to the land. I am proud to introduce Sandvik s inaugural Reflect Reconciliation Plan (RAP) for Our Reflect RAP provides a framework to help us focus and coordinate our reconciliation journey over the next 12 months. Our journey commenced in September 2017 with the recruitment of a to oversee the RAP process, and we have made many strides in our preliminary RAP activities thus far. However to fully grasp reconciliation, it must live in the hearts and minds of our staff; We must genuinely engage with the plan together to reach the clearly defined actions, timeframes and targets. We are making small steps and building upon our strengths whilst keeping the practical actions built upon relationships, respect and opportunities at the forefront. At Sandvik, we are committed to working together to make a difference across all our locations. We also look forward to enriching our existing relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, communities and organisations through further education and engagement. I encourage you to read our Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan and join with us to make a purposeful difference and deeper engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities. As a leading supplier of equipment, tools, service and technical solutions for the mining and rock excavation industries, this Reflect RAP will assist Sandvik Mining and Rock Technology to develop its own unique vision for reconciliation, as well as commitments to applying cultural learning, respectful business practice, and promotion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employment within its sphere of influence. Sandvik Mining and Rock Technology displays a deep commitment to building and maintaining respectful relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stakeholders through its actionable goal to develop a list of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, communities and organisations within the local area that Sandvik could approach to connect with on its reconciliation journey. Practicing respect and understanding for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories and cultures is demonstrated in Sandvik Mining and Rock Technology s Reflect RAP through its aim to engage with an Indigenous artist to represent Sandvik in the development and creation of its RAP artwork. Sandvik Mining and Rock Technology is dedicated to providing employment pathways for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This is communicated through its commitment to investigate opportunities for employing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander graduates, interns and apprentices by establishing contact with key stakeholders, and continuing to nurture these relationships. On behalf of Reconciliation Australia, I commend Sandvik Mining and Rock Technology on its first RAP, and look forward to following its ongoing reconciliation journey. 4 THE SANDVIK RECONCILIATION ACTION PLAN ARTWORK CREATION PATHWAYS Creation Spirit travels across this land, bringing lore, bringing culture, country is created. Ceremony s performed, songs are sung we are connected, we are one with this land. Skilful hands adapt and refine, knowledge is passed from generation to generation. Rituals and rites, lines direct and guide, tools exchanged trade continues. Working together, our direction is clear, our ways are enriched, we celebrate as one. This artwork tells a contemporary story of Sandvik, utilising traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander symbols and motifs. Our story begins in the lower left hand corner of the artwork where two people come together to talk and listen. This represents Sandvik s first core value: Customer Focus. The fish symbol coupled with the fish hook represents Sandviks original identity. The journey continues along the red pathway, discussions are taken into a larger forum, a meeting place the first circle from the left also represents - Sandviken where the Sandvik company began. This pathway represents the Creation Spirit moving across different country, instilling the knowledges and resources of that place to it s people this is the Creation Pathway. At each stage of the Creation pathway are significant objects, various tools that were utilised to enable people to survive and thrive. A fish hook, stone axe head, spear tip, boomerang, woomera, digging stick and a number 7 boomerang all represent significant tools and technology. These objects and their knowledges were refined, sought after and traded through out the country and also internationally long before European settlement. The connecting lines that enter from the lefthand side of the artwork represent the beginnings of Sandvik as a company in (Sandviken), 150 plus years ago. This smaller circle is connected to three larger circles, these circles represent three key principal areas of Sandvik: Sandvik Machining Solutions, Sandvik Mining and Rock Technology, Sandvik Materials Technology. These circles also represent the growth of the company, looking at the past, present and the future. These three central circles are connected by a variety of smaller circles which represent companies and organisations that have been acquired by Sandvik over the years. These circles also represent the diversity within the organisation itself Sandvik being represented in over 150 countries worldwide. At each corner of the artwork are four symbols which represent the company s core values; starting from the bottom lefthand corner and moving in a clockwise direction: Innovation, Passion To Win, Fair Play and Customer Focus. 5 ABOUT THE ARTIST THE RAP ARTWORK PROCESS Riki Salam, Principal, Creative Director and artist of We are 27 Creative developed Creation Pathways for Sandvik s first Reconciliation Action Plan. Riki was born and raised in Cairns on Yidinji land in 1972 and is a member of and connected to Kala Lagaw Ya - Western Island groups (St. Pauls - Moa Island), Kuku Yalanji Peoples on his Father and Grandfather s side and a member of the Ngai Tahu people in the South Island of New Zealand on his Mother s side. Educated in both Cairns and Brisbane he has over 20 years of industry experience as a graphic designer and artist. CREATIVE STRATEGY WORKSHOP In late September 2017, Sandvik engaged Indigenous Art, Design and Communications agency, We are 27 Creative to create a bespoke RAP artwork for our company. We are 27 Creative worked with Positive Social Solutions to deliver a creative strategy workshop at which 20 Sandvik employees from across Australia attended. The full day workshop covered a personal story from Aunty Denise Proud and a cultural walk with Matthew Hegarty at the gorgeous surroundings of Walkabout Creek, Brisbane. The spirit of reconciliation was evident and Sandvik employees put pen to paper and gave their vision to We are 27 Creative to create the artwork. Riki has worked on many high-profile projects including the Qantas painted Boeing 747/800, Yananyi Dreaming, produced artworks for Telstra, Origin, Woolworths, the Healing Foundation and the Australian Human Rights Commission to name a few. Riki also designed the identity for the G20 in He works in pen, ink and brush, gouache on paper, and with acrylic paints, exploring concepts of traditional culture in a contemporary format. After a month, the artwork Creation Pathways was created, clearly representing Sandvik and our past, present and future. The artwork is now proudly on display in our Brisbane office. 6 ABOUT SANDVIK SANDVIK S RAP JOURNEY Sandvik Mining and Rock Technology is a leading supplier of equipment, tools, service and technical solutions for the mining and rock excavation industries. With customers demanding ever greater productivity to ensure profitability, we are providing the cutting-edge solutions needed to succeed. Our equipment and services help our customers in every corner of the world to mine and excavate rock safer and more productively. Our offering covers rock drilling, rock cutting, crushing and screening, loading and hauling, tunnelling, quarrying, breaking and demolition. In Australia Sandvik Mining and Rock Technology employs approximately 800 people and globally Sandvik employs 45,000 people. In Australia, Sandvik has currently 20 office, site and workshop locations throughout regional, remote and urban locations. Sandvik Mining and Rock Technology in Australia has a national focus on delivery however we are part of a global company. At the inception of our Reconciliation Action Plan, data collected on the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff employed in the company was limited. Sandvik had not embarked on a reconciliation journey to date. However, we have employed a to assist in our journey. A RAP Working Group has been established and consists of both indigenous and non-indigenous staff within Sandvik with the General Manager HR - Australia and SA APAC as our dedicated champion. VIP CUSTOMER DINNER Early December 2017, VIP customers that were attending a Sandvik Equipment Launch were invited to a VIP Customer Dinner in Perth. The dinner showcased the first steps in Sandvik s journey toward launching our first Reconciliation Action Plan in The artwork Creation Pathways was transformed into ties and scarves for the Sandvik team attending the dinner, as well as gifts for our guests, including lapel pins and crystals engraved with the RAP logo. Two Sandvik service vehicles were also wrapped with the design and greeted guests as they entered the WACA for dinner. OUR PARTNERSHIPS/CURRENT ACTIVITIES To date, Sandvik has not participated in any reconciliation activities. Sandvik has now started the process in initiating the following internal activities: Acknowledgements of Traditional Owners and Elders at formal meetings and corporate inductions; Acknowledgements of Traditional Owners and Elders on addresses; Encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to apply for vacancies (as noted on job advertisements); Engaged an Indigenous graphic design company to create a bespoke RAP artwork; Commenced RAP Information Sessions at all site locations; Display of Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and Australian flags at all site locations. 7 WHAT DOES RECONCILIATION MEAN TO ME? WHAT DOES HAVING A RAP AT SANDVIK MEAN TO YOU? To me this means learning about and acknowledging the past by planning to make a positive contribution towards creating opportunities for the future - that in some way addresses disadvantages of the past in conjunction with the communities most impacted. Breaking down pre-conceived ideas and values. Acceptance and growth. Reconciliation to me is the opportunity to share knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture to improve the relationship between Non-Indigenous Communities. Acknowledging and understanding the past. Respect for country and land. Acknowledging the bads of the past and having a genuine want to help Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people gain respect and equality, so we can embrace the future together as one Australia. Working towards a respectful and equitable future. Respect for all cultures. Growing together. Ensure that Sandvik makes a contribution to society (specifically those that were negatively impacted by unfair in unjust policies) that acknowledges the past and is part of creating a future that is fully inclusive of society in the best way we can, and paying special attention to those that need help the most. Being part of a company that wants to provide equal and meaningful opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Reconciliation to me means bridging the gap between Indigenous and Non-Indigenous people, and raising the living, health, working and education standards for everyone to prosper. For me the RAP gives us a visual link to the past and clearly defines the planned Sandvik & Indigenous relationship journey into the future
