3 Summary of the International Market for the Top End and Central Australia There were 132,000 international visitors travelling to the Top End for all purposes in the YE September 2018, which represents a slight decline of -1.3% when compared to YE September Visitor nights for the Top End were also down (-7.9% to 2.4 million nights), along with spend which went down by -15% to $178 million. Given that spend decreased more relative to visitor numbers, the average spend per trip went down by -14% to $1,344. The average length of stay was also lower (down -1.3 nights to 18.1 nights). Central Australia also experienced a decrease in international visitation for all purposes for the YE September 2018 (down -2.0% to 202,000 visitors) and a decrease in visitor nights (down -4.9% to 1.1 million nights). This contributed to a slight decrease in the average length of stay (down -0.2 nights to 5.6 nights). International visitor spend was also lower for Central Australia (down -8.5% to $234 million), causing the average spend per trip to decrease by -6.7% to $1,161. All-purpose visitation from Germany, Greater China, France, Switzerland and the Netherlands was up for the Top End, while allpurpose visitors from the United States and the United Kingdom decreased for the YE September The markets with the highest growth for Central Australia were Japan, Greater China and Italy with less all-purpose visitors from the United States and Germany. 4 Summary of the International Market for the Northern Territory For the NT overall, there were 289,000 international visitors who travelled to the Territory for all purposes during YE September This result was a slight decrease on the previous year of -1.1%. Spend and visitor nights also decreased for the NT when compared to YE September 2017 (down -11% to $414 million and down -6.0% to 3.6 million visitor nights, respectively). This, in turn, caused the average spend per trip to go down by -9.9% to $1,433. The average length of stay also decreased by -0.6 nights to 12.3 nights. The key performing markets for the NT for the YE September 2018 were Japan (up +36% or 8,000 visitors), Greater China (up +19% or 3,000 visitors) and the Netherlands (up +47% or 3,000 visitors). The largest decline came from the United States (down -28% or 14,000 visitors), Germany (down -11% or 3,000 visitors) and the United Kingdom (down -6.3% or 3,000 visitors). INTERNATIONAL VISITATION SUMMARY FOR THE NORTHERN TERRITORY All purpose of visit Change Year ending September on 17 Visitors % Visitor nights 3,796 3, % Expenditure ($ million) % Average length of stay (nights) Average spend per trip ($) 1,591 1, % Visitor market share (%) pp ALL-PURPOSE VISITATION BY NT OVERSEAS MARKETS All jurisdictions with the exception of the NT had an increase in international visitors for YE September The national average growth was +5.7%, with Tasmania experiencing the strongest percentage growth. The Territory s market share dropped by -0.2 percentage points (pp) to 3.4% for international visitors. For the September 2018 quarter (July-August-September) there was an increase in all-purpose international visitation by +8.2% compared to the September 2017 quarter. The upward trend in international visitation for the quarter suggests that Turbocharging Tourism activities are starting to have a positive impact. Due to the lag between tourism marketing activities, booking and actual travel; greater impacts are anticipated into the future.

6 AGE GROUPS NT ALL-PURPOSE VISITORS This factsheet contains a summary of information relevant to the Northern Territory (NT) tourism industry including visitation results from Tourism Research Australia s (TRA) International Visitor Survey (IVS), overseas and arrivals information from the Department of Immigration and Border Protection and airport traffic data from the Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics. Sample size International Visitor numbers CI Visitor nights Year ending September ,693 +/-6% +/-15% Year ending September ,760 +/-6% +/-15% Please note that the IVS results for the September quarter 2018 are preliminary and do not include any data relating to purpose of visit. This is because the quality of the main purpose of visit component of the passenger data supplied to TRA by the Department of Home Affairs has been identified as a concern. There are no issues with the survey collection. To produce a purpose of visit measure for the IVS, TRA uses data collected from the incoming passenger cards of international visitors to Australia. Work is currently in progress to resolve these issues and it is likely that a back cast of TRA data will be required. TRA will release revised estimates once a solution has been implemented.
