WAFL admission prices $15 Adult* $12 Concession* Free Children 15 and under *Includes a copy of Football Budget Find us on The WAFL season has hit an interesting stage of the season with clubs jostling for positions in the top five. After 14 of the 21 rounds played, every club even last-placed East Fremantle has a chance of being part of the finals action. Eight teams are still chasing the red-hot Subiaco. And there will be great interest to see whether Jarrad Schofield s men can go through the homeand-away rounds undefeated. However, there is also a group of clubs hovering in or out of the finals berths so the Football Budget has cast its eyes over the closing part of the 2018 campaign to determine which rivals stand in the way of your team getting a position in the September action. SUBIACO (12-0, First) To play: SF, C, SD, WP, EF and P. Long-term view: Just a matter of seeing if anyone can come close to the rampaging Lions before the finals. SOUTH FREMANTLE (9-3, Second) To play: S, PT, WP, SD, P and EF. Long-term view: The Bulldogs have six matches to make a dent in three-game deficit behind Subiaco if the Lions actually falter. WEST PERTH (8-5, Third) To play: SD, PT, SF, S and EP. Long term view: West Perth is keen to get second and the double chance but clashes against South Fremantle and Subiaco in rounds 18 and 19 will be telling. SWAN DISTRICTS (5-7, Fourth) To play: EP, WP, EF, S, SF and C. Long-term view: The boys from Bassendean need to claim a topteam scalp in the final three rounds to prove they are a genuine finals force. CLAREMONT (5-8, Fifth) To play: EP, S, P, PT and SD. Long-term view: Two byes in the run home might be problematic for the Darren Harris Tigers. Clashes against the Demons, Thunder and Swans to round out campaign. 4 Copyright No part of this publication may be reproduced or stored in a retrieval system without the permission of the publisher. 5 in 2018 By Ross Lewis PERTH (5-7, Sixth) To play: PT, EF, EP, C, SF and S. Long-term view: Perth is on the march under Earl Spalding to sit just percentage outside top five but has to bank some wins soon because of a tough close to the season. EAST FREMANTLE (2-10, Ninth) To play: P, SD, EP, S and SF. Long-term view: The maths makes it possible for a Sharks miracle, yet the port club is just aiming for improvement in the last five matches. PEEL THUNDER (5-7, Seventh) To play: P, SF, WP, EP, C and EP. Long term view: Two home matches against a struggling East Perth in the final three matches could be advantageous. EAST PERTH (4-7, Eighth) To play: SD, C, P, PT, EF, WP and PT. Long-term view: The Royals don t meet Subiaco and South Fremantle again in the homeand-away rounds, but time is running out.» Darren Harris» Earl Spalding WAFL kicks in for Ronald McDonald House All West Australian Football League players and umpires across all grades will wear silly socks to raise vital funds for children with serious illness, as part of Ronald McDonald House Charity Round 15 this weekend. Each League game will feature a special Ronald McDonald Charity Fan Zone where kids can get involved in a range of fun activities and win some great prizes. These activities include a spinning wheel, and a fries handball target. There will also be face painters and a lucky dip fans can take part in with a gold coin donation. All proceeds will go to Ronald McDonald House. Ronald McDonald House provides a home away from home for regional families with seriously ill children, so they can stay together while being close to the medical care they need. You can help sick kids get back on their feet by registering your workplace or school for a Silly Socks Day. Go to org.au/page/silly-socks-wa to register. 5

6 by Sean Cowan Collectables During 2018, the Football Budget will again feature a section on WAFL memorabilia and invites you to write or if you want more information about the football collectables you have tucked away at home. I ve said it before and I ll say it again footballs are not particularly popular among collectors. But there are always exceptions. For the most part, an old footy has to come with some type of provenance to give the buyer some peace of mind that it was actually used in a particular game or somehow connected to a particular player. Even then, it almost inevitably goes flat, and the bladder perishes. Signed balls, especially modern balls, are seen in much the same light. But, recently, there have been a few nostalgia hunters looking for old Chesson footies, or the older Burley balls. More interesting, still, have been the old footies that were obviously made for display. For instance, I wrote a few months ago about a 1956 ball that was hand-painted with the logos of the State teams that came to Perth to compete in that year s national carnival, which was won by Victoria. Then, just this week, collector Phil showed me his latest acquisition a football that was hand-painted to commemorate WA s victory over Victoria in the 1984 state of origin match at Subiaco Oval. It s a beauty and would find a home in any WAFL collector s display. Bearing the final score and the name of Tassie Medal and Simpson Medal winner 6 Brad Hardie on a black-and-gold ball, it was apparently auctioned off at a Claremont Football Club function in the 1980s. Phil bought it for an undisclosed amount, and was pretty happy with his purchase. Who wouldn t be? I m not the first collector to struggle with the colour question when it comes to the plastic tokens and pendants that were issued in the late 1960s. I m specifically talking about the sets that some collectors believe were included in Twisties packs, while others claim were packed in tins of Milo. Either way, they featured club logos and mascots. The first was released in about 1968 and consisted of a plastic football badge with a club logo and a metal pin. They were also made for VFL and SANFL clubs. So, for a WAFL collector, there s eight to collect one for each club. Unless you re worried about the fact that the footballs came in different colours and with the lugs (which held the logo in the slot) in different spots. All told, there are 16 different plastic football badges. Multiply that by the eight club logos and you re going to be looking for 128 different badges. There s a similar issue with the plastic pendants that were issued in about There were apparently six different pendant colours, meaning a WAFL collector will need to collect 48 of them to have the lot. I recently caught up with Des, who had a jar full of the 1970 pendants, which he had kept since childhood. Des wasn t too fussed on them, though, and was happy to let them go to someone who wanted all the colour variations. So, having decided to try collecting all the colour variations, my only remaining question is whether one of the pendant colours is rarer than the others? Apparently, they come in red, orange, green, blue, yellow and pink. But I ve got 24 of them and not a pink pendant in sight. Has anyone else got a jar full of these? And are there any pink ones in it? Finally for this week, I just thought I would point out a couple of absolute bargains that were picked up by separate collectors recently. Regular readers of this column would know about the Japanese-made bobblehead figurines that were sold in WAFL club colours back in the late 1960s. These are highly sought after today and sell well. The seller should have read the Football Budget before selling (or at least conducted a search online), because they had an East Perth bobblehead in pristine condition and an East Fremantle bobblehead with a damaged spring for sale at the bargain prices of $60 and $40 respectively. It s no surprise that they were snapped up within minutes of hitting the market. The seller would have easily cleared $700, if they had done their homework. It s a good lesson for anyone who finds an old footy-related item in the shed or cupboard do your research first. Yes, a lot of items are only worth a few dollars and may not be worth the time required to sell it. But you should always search the internet or call an expert before selling something off. If you have a query regarding WAFL memorabilia, send photographs and/or details to Sean at blackswan@iinet.net. au or Sean Cowan, c/o Football Budget, PO Box 911, Subiaco WA His website is at and he also can be contacted on

9 Previews SUBIACO v SOUTH FREMANTLE Saturday, July 14, 1.40pm Subiaco Story so far: A winning dozen for Subiaco with its recent grand final nemesis, Peel, the latest victim. The Lions haven t lost a home qualifying season match since Round 12, 2016 and that was at Subiaco Oval against the Thunder. Running hot: Angus Litherland is one of the most unassuming players in the WAFL but his backline work, particularly on the last line of defence, hasn t wavered during the season. He even had three inside 50 entries last round. Who is to come: Bye, Claremont (A), Swan Districts (H), West Perth (A). Last time they met: R2, 2018 South Fremantle 9.8 (62) lost to Subiaco (120). Like many rivals to Subiaco this season, South Fremantle was in touch of the Lions at half-time before being blown away by Rhys Waters, Kyal Horsley and Josh Deluca. Ben Sokol capped the good work with five goals. The key: Are Subiaco due for a fall and can the likely strongest challenger be responsible for inflicting the Lions first loss of 2018? South Fremantle was forced into a dour struggle last round. The Bulldogs will want their goal kicking boots on to smother Subiaco. by Ross Lewis South Fremantle Story so far: South Fremantle had to grind out a win over a pesky Claremont but it was the Bulldogs third win in a row and erased some of the damage from the loss to the Tigers in Round 8. Have breathing room in second place. Running hot: He kicked two crucial goals but it was his body work and one-percent efforts in the forward line that left the South Fremantle match committee so pleased with forward Ben Saunders against the Tigers. Who is to come: Peel (A), Bye, West Perth (H), Swan Districts (A). PERTH v PEEL Saturday, July 14, 2.15pm Perth Story so far: Three wins from four matches and there is renewed spirit at Lathlain Park. The resurrection of the Demons has been so alarming that Earl Spalding s team could be fourth tonight if the right results around the league come its way. Running hot: He was clearly Perth s best by half-time with 20 possessions and 10 marks and Michael Sinclair was just as dominant in the second half to spearhead the Demons victory. Who is to come: East Fremantle (H), East Perth (A), Bye, Claremont (H) Last time they met: R3, 2018 Peel (79) lost to Perth (85). It was the win that signalled Perth was on the improve. Spencer White booted five goals while Cody Leggett continued his solid early season form. The ever busy Clint Jones had 35 possessions and took eight marks. The key: Perth has to continue its outstanding forward zone attack to overcome the Thunder. The Demons had 31 shots at goal, backed by 57 inside 50m entries in the triumph over Swan Districts. That is what Peel has to thwart this week. Peel Story so far: Momentum just isn t swinging Peel s way in 2018 although the loss to Subiaco last round can be countered by the fact no other team has been able to knock off the Lions. There have been four losses in past seven matches. Running hot: Danyle Pearce continues to put his hand up for an AFL recall, even if it seems Fremantle isn t looking. He was the stand-out last round with 29 possessions against Subiaco. Who is to come: South Fremantle (H), West Perth (A), East Perth (H), Bye.» Rhys Waters SWAN DISTRICTS V EAST PERTH Saturday July 14, 2.25pm Swan Districts Story so far: Swans are on the skids. Four losses in a row have sent the black and whites towards the bottom half of the ladder. The most recent win was against Perth at home on June 2. Can t afford another defeat at this stage. Running hot: Matt Riggio worked hard to try to turnaround Swans performance against Perth. He has averaged 26 possessions over his past four outings with the black and whites. Who is to come: West Perth (A), East Fremantle (A), Subiaco (A), South Frem (H). East Perth Story so far: If their opponents are struggling, then the Royals are in freefall. They re enduring a six-match losing streak that has left East Perth languishing in eighth spot. The most recent win was against East Fremantle on May 6. Running hot: He is working his way back to AFL contention after a bad run of injuries and Nathan Vardy showed two weeks ago he is great ruck insurance for West Coast with 57 hit-outs. Who is to come: Claremont (A), Perth (H), Peel (A), East Fremantle (H). Last time they met: R8, 2018 East Perth 11.7 (73) lost to Swan Districts 13.8 (86). Taryce Stewart (four goals) and former Royal Steven Payne enabled Swan Districts to get the jump on East Perth and lead by 26 points at quarter time. Rhys Palmer had 26 touches through midfield for the victors. The key: Will the decision by East Perth to end its alignment with West Coast have any effect on the Eagles players who know they won t be with the Royals next season? The passion for the East Perth jumper among the AFL talent has been often questioned.» Danyle Pearce» Matt Riggio 9

16 Integrated Footy Swans go out to Count Me In Australian Football is a game for all people. And Swan Districts is highlighting the concept with its commitment to Integrated competition by staging a special curtain-raiser contest at Steel Blue Oval this round. The fiercely competitive teams from Coolbinia and High Wycombe will showcase their talents in a Count Me In fixture before Swans tackle East Perth at WAFL league level. Community has become a key pillar for Swan Districts. While the senior team is still a prominent component of Swans, the black and whites have recently reset their purpose, vision and values to transform a traditionally-focussed football club to a community enabler.» David Hallows, captain of Coolbinia Integrated Team., Tony Notte, Swan Districts co-captain, and High Wycom.be Integrated Team. captain Graem.e Govan. Swans ethos is to build community and develop people. Its vision is to be a well-connected and community-engaged club which improves lives in its wider community. That includes an emphasis on Integrated Football, which was launched under the WA Amateur Football League umbrella in The program provides opportunities for males and females 16 years and older who have intellectual disabilities to play our great game at a WAAFL community club. The program began with Warnbro, Kingsway, Lynwood Ferndale, High Wycombe and Fremantle CBC and has flourished as Coolbinia, Wembley, Willetton and North Beach came on board. Currently Integrated Football clubs provide opportunities for more than 200 participants. Regular fixtures are played following the senior grades each Saturday with games comprising four 12-minute quarters played to the Laws of Football with some modifications. The Count Me In match will feature 10-minute quarters. Coaches are on-field to assist players, however, some of the teams are self-sufficient and can be coached from the sidelines. And the Integrated players are also giving back to the community as many participate in mentoring school students with Intellectual Disabilities in the benefits of playing football. Swans have been proud to get behind the program with the Count Me In fixture. But the club will also celebrate inclusion in the community with recognition of the Ronald McDonald House Charity Round throughout the WAFL this weekend. And the club will also feature three guest speakers who have triumphed over tragedy Shaun Pianta (visually-impaired Paralympic skier), Darren Taylor (Great Bike Hike for inclusive communities) and Mark le Flohic, OAM (Dual Paralympic cycling gold medallist) at the Legends Luncheon before the match. Count Me In Day will also feature a VIP area for people with disability, carers, families and friends. Disabled individuals and guests can enjoy uninterrupted views of the match and a free soft drink and sausage sizzle lunch provided by community partner, Atwork Australia. There will be performances by dancers with disability, a wheelchair obstacle course race at half-time and post-game entertainment by Catch Music. The group heard from a number of special guests including AFL Head of Umpiring Grant Williams who discussed the new and exciting concepts the AFL is delivering to further improve the umpiring system in WA. We all know the challenges that face umpiring in WA and through the support of the AFL we are meeting these challenges head on, Williams said. There are many new and exciting elements being rolled out State-wide to benefit umpiring in WA, these include a SportsTG registration process, umpire appointment platform Schedula, a new Umpire Accreditation Model, an Umpire Coaches Academy and match day paperwork app. State Umpiring Manager David Crute said the event proved to be a great success. One of the many highlights of the conference was hearing from National Umpiring Development Manager Adam Davis about the benefit the new AFL Umpire Accreditation Model will have on umpire retention and the amazing resources now available to all umpire coaches across the State thanks to the recent roll-out of the Umpire Coaches Academy, Crute said. To have the support of the AFL in delivering this conference demonstrates the level of investment we are starting to see in umpiring in WA The conference will be held annually and coincide with the Landmark Country Championships.
