Many thanks for your inquiry. We have enclosed the costs and information relating to the courses offered at the Algoa Flying Club. Please have a look through and feel free to contact us if you have any further queries. The Algoa Flying Club finds its roots before the 2nd World war when the Port Elizabeth Aero Club was formed in 1929, training pilots on Tiger Moths. The club was reformed in 1956 as the Algoa Flying Club, named after Algoa Bay on the coast of which the city is situated. The local flying school came under club ownership in This makes the Algoa Flying Club one of the oldest and most established Flying Schools in South Africa. We provide all forms of flying training and self-fly hire with the specific goal of making flying accessible to as many people as possible, within a friendly environment where members, students and their guests can relax after their flights. The Algoa Flying Club, a not for profit organisation of flying enthusiasts with the aims and objects of promoting flying and flying training in all its facets and to the highest standards. It is an organisation that has long established roots and is highly respected in South Africa. Amongst our members are pilots from all walks of life and include many seasoned flying instructors and seasoned airline pilots. It's the shared experience that helps to make the Algoa Flying Club the right place to earn your wings. Our rates are highly competitive and we provide a range of aircraft suited both to training the beginner and the advanced pilot.
This means that while flying with us is by no means cheap, we keep rates as low as possible, and provide a range of aircraft suited to both training the beginner and the advanced pilot, and allowing qualified pilots to fly for business and pleasure. Our membership includes a wide cross-section of society, local and international and our students range from those who wish to fly for fun, all the way to those taking the first steps towards a flying career. We boast a fleet of Cessna 152 s, Cessna 172 s, a Cessna 172Rg, a Sling 2, a Piper Comanche, a Piper Seminole and an Airvan GA8 and a SACAA Accredited Elite Evolution S812 (FNPT 11) Simulator, which offers Multi Engine Piston based on the Beech Baron B58 and a Single Engine Piston based on the Cessna 172RG. Algoa Flying Club and Flight Training Centre have been in existence for more than 60 years. We are proud of our high standard of training which, combined with a personal touch and rich history, sets us apart from other training organisations. It would be our pleasure to explore the possibility of undertaking your training.
GENERAL INFORMATION / TRAINING & COURSES OFFERED Whether your goal is a career in aviation or for your own private needs, the Algoa Flying Club will show you how easy and exhilarating it is to spread your wings. This unique and time saving form of transport is wonderful for business contract work, aerial photography, charter and scenic tours, or just for the sheer joy of flying. Uniform high standards and consistent training methods are the hallmarks of our training system. Our instructors are highly qualified professionals who take pride in the high standard of flight training for which our school is known. We have been training pilots for over 60 years and proudly maintain the highest training and safety standards. The full range of training for the Private Pilot Licence, Night Rating, Commercial Pilot Licence, Instrument Rating, Airline Transport Pilot Licence and Instructor Rating is offered, either full or part-time. Our instructors are highly qualified professionals who take pride in the high standard of flight training for which our school is known. In addition to in-depth ground school lectures, each student receives individual attention and personal briefings to ensure efficient progress and success. It is important to note that the course content and fees are based on the legal minimum requirements laid down by the South African Civil Aviation Authority. Obtaining of the licence is dependent on the student reaching the required standards and fulfilling the syllabus before being recommended by their instructor for the final flight tests. If reaching this standard takes a particular student more than the minimum stipulated, these additional hours will be charged extra at the prevailing hourly rate. Algoa Flying Club is the flight training division of Algoa Flying Club, which means that students can experience fly-ins and rallies, having fun while they learn. There is also a welcoming and friendly social life centred around the Flying Club.

Private Pilot s Licence Algoa Flying Club A Private Pilot Licence allows you to fly for business or pleasure and is also the first stage to becoming a Commercial Pilot. PPL is considered a recreational licence and cannot be used for any financial reward. Course requirements are a minimum of 45 total flying hours including 15 solo hours. In addition to the practical flying hours, the student is required to pass theoretical examinations. Remember that you will not obtain your PPL merely on completion of the specified minimum hours, but when you have completed the syllabus and have reached the required standard. The course can be done in eight (8) weeks, but it is advisable to have ten (10) to twelve (12) weeks available, as the weather can affect the hour building progress. The student is also required to pass a medical examination carried out by a doctor approved to do aviation medicals (names can be provided by the Centre). The minimum age for acquiring a PPL is 17. A Student Pilot Licence can be obtained at age16. There is no upper age limit. Although there are no specific entry requirements for the Private Pilot Licence, knowledge of basic mathematics and a good command of the English language are
strongly recommended. Algoa Flying Club BOOKS AND EQUIPMENT At the start of training, the student will receive a comprehensive pilot kit including headphones, navigation and flight planning aids, and study material. Lectures must be attended at the Algoa Flying Club ground school to ensure a thorough understanding of all aspects of flying. There is ongoing support from instructors, admin staff and other students. PRACTICAL FLYING The flying exercises included in the PPL are: Cockpit layout Preparation for flight Air experience Effect of controls Taxiing Straight and level flight Climbing Stalling Medium turns Climbing and descending turns Take off Approach and landing
Spinning First solo Side slipping Steep turns Low level flying Crosswind take-off and landing Precautionary circuit and landing Forced landing Basic instrument flying Navigation Algoa Flying Club EXAMINATIONS CAA exams are written on the following subjects, for which the required pass mark is 75%: Air Law Engines and Airframes Flight Planning Human Performance Meteorology Navigation Principles of Flight Radiotelephony Costs: Duration: Will be dependent on the aircraft flown, and excludes accommodation fees 8 12 weeks (3 months) After your PPL: After your PPL test it takes approximately a week for CAA to process your licence, after which you can carry passengers for business or pleasure. Your licence must be maintained in accordance with CAA and internal safety requirements to remain valid. This involves medicals, check rides and annual renewals.
Night Rating Algoa Flying Club After PPL we encourage students to continue with a Night Rating which allows you to fly in good weather conditions, but after dark. This gives more flexibility with flight times e.g. Returning after a late business appointment, as well as giving you some basic instrument flying experience. The Night Rating includes an additional 5 hours of instrument flying bringing the total to 10 hours including instrument time completed during the PPL course. This is followed by night flying including circuits and a cross-country. The total course covers about 10 hours. All training for this rating is dual with an instructor. Other courses available after the PPL: Safety Pilot Rating Instrument Rating (for PPL holder) Commercial Licence with Instrument Rating Airline Transport Pilot Licence Flight Instructor Rating Multi-engine Rating
Commercial Pilots Licence / IR Algoa Flying Club Course requirements for the Commercial Licence with Instrument Rating are a further 160 total flying hours after the PPL, which includes 100 solo hours of which 50 must be cross-country by day and/or night and 5 hours must be night solo. A minimum of 40 hours of instrument flight training is required of which 20 hours can be flown on a simulator. In addition to the practical flying hours, the student is required to pass the CAA theoretical examinations. Remember that you will not obtain your CPL merely on completion of the specified minimum hours, but when you have completed the syllabus and have reached the required standard. The full-time course (including PPL) lasts approximately twelve (12) months, depending on weather and the student s progress. The student is also required to pass a commercial pilot medical examination carried out by a doctor approved to do aviation medicals (names can be provided by the Centre). The minimum age for acquiring a CPL is 18 but there is no upper age limit. There are no specific entry requirements for the Commercial Pilot Licence, but knowledge of basic mathematics and physics and a good command of the English language are strongly recommended. A Multi Engine rating may be included and will require an additional 15 hours instruction, 6 hours of which may be done on our FNPT11 Baron 58 Simulator.
On full-time courses, your practical flying lessons will be scheduled for you. You will begin by completing the Night Rating whilst also carrying out revision and navigation exercises over routes laid down for you in your flying program. These routes are specified so that you get good experience over various terrain and navigational difficulty, including over some beautiful scenery. This will continue until you have approximately 140 hours total flying time and have passed all the written exams, when you will start on your advanced simulator training. This will be followed by the remaining preparation for the Instrument and CPL flight tests. During your training, you will at the appropriate times do conversions onto the more advanced aircraft types as well as having dual checks/tests. BOOKS AND EQUIPMENT The student will be provided with all the materials necessary to complete the course. These items are compulsory to ensure uniformity during classes. EXAMINATIONS The written examinations cover 11 subjects divided into the following multiple choice examination papers: aviation meteorology flight planning and performance radio aids and communication navigation and plotting air law and operating procedures instruments and electronics aviation medicine aircraft technical and general
You will be required to attend a full ground school course during which you will be given progress tests and mock exams. The instructor will indicate whether you are ready to attempt the CAA exams. Costs: Duration: Will be dependent on the aircraft flown, and excludes accommodation fees months Airline Transport Pilots Licence Our school is licensed to train ATPL. The highest level of pilot training in your professional pilot career is the Airline Transport Pilot Licence. This licence is required to fly for any airline, or to captain any aircraft exceeding 5700kg. If this is your dream, you can achieve it at the Algoa Flying Club. In common with all aviation training organisations, the process is that pilots would first complete CPL IR and then enter the job market to gain the necessary experience which would be a pre-requisite for the ATP licence.
The requirements for the Airline Transport Licence are a current Instrument Rated Commercial Pilot Licence plus: MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Must be at least 21 years of age Hold a valid Class 1 Medical Certificate o The Class I Medical certificate must be renewed every 12 calendar months (if under 40 years of age) or 6 calendar months (if over 40). Hold a valid Instrument Rating The SACAA requires that you pass 6 theoretical subjects (which can be completed as soon as you obtain your CPL): The minimum pass mark is 75% o o o o o o Navigation General Meteorology Aircraft Technical and General Flight Planning Instruments Radio Aids After passing your last ATPL subject you will have 5 years to complete a minimum of 1500 flying hours, of which: o 500 hours must be pilot-in-command-under-supervision; or o 250 hours must be as pilot-in-command, of which up to 150 hours may be pilot-in-command-undersupervision; and o 200 hours must be cross-country flight time, of which 100 hours may be as co-pilot or pilot-in-commandunder-supervision; o 75 hours must be instrument time, of which not more than 30 hours may be acquired in a flight simulation training device (FSTD) approved for the purpose; and o 100 hours shall be night flight time as pilot-in-command or as co-pilot. In common with all aviation training organisations, the process is that pilots would first complete CPL IR and then enter the job market to gain the necessary experience which would be a pre-requisite for the ATP licence.
The hours flying experience referred to may comprise flight time in any of the following capacities o As pilot-in-command, counted in full; o As pilot under instruction (dual), counted in full; o As co-pilot performing under the supervision of the pilot-in-command the functions and duties of the pilot-in-command, counted in full up to a maximum of 500 hours, provided both pilots have completed multi-crew cooperation training; o As an appropriately rated co-pilot, counted in full; o As student pilot-in-command and as student pilot-in-command-under-supervision up to a maximum of 50 hours towards the pilot-in-command time required for the issue of an Airline Transport Pilot Licence (Aeroplane), counted in full, provided that the Part 141 aviation training organisation has been authorised by the Commissioner to allow the logging of student pilot-in-command-under-supervision flight time; o A maximum of 100 hours may have been completed in an flight simulation training device (FSTD) of which a maximum of 25 hours may have been completed in a flight procedures trainer 1 (FNPT 1), or, where the training is provided in an integrated training course, 40 hours in an FNPT II, which may include 10 hours in an FNPT 1; o Up to 50 percent of the hours may be completed in helicopters;
o A maximum of 30 hours flight time in touring motor gliders, gliders, micro light aircraft (excluding a weight-shift micro light aeroplane, or an aeroplane with a maximum take-off mass of less than 450 kg), may be counted towards the hours experience requirement. o A South African Air Force pilot flight instructor or navigator instructor may apply for exemption for some or all of these requirements Pass a Flight Test with a Designated Flight Examiner Once you have the experience as referred to above, and have the examinations completed, you would then be able to complete your ATPL through Algoa Flying Club. You can commence ground school for your Airline Transport Pilot Licence immediately after obtaining your Commercial Pilot Licence, however, there is a time limit of 5 years to complete the 1500 flying hours, after completing your last exam. It is advisable therefore, to being by building your flight experience to the necessary hours first, and when nearing the required hours, begin the ground school training. In this way, completion of the two requirements can coincide, without one delaying the other, or running out of time. Algoa Flying Club will guide you through the entire training process and provide you with the required training per your individual needs, whether you wish to begin from a student pilot level or merely wish to continue from previous training. The theoretical knowledge required to attain the Airline Transport Pilot Licence shares a great deal in common with the CPL syllabus. You require a Commercial Pilot Licence to join the Airline Transport Pilot Licence Ground School. (See Commercial Pilot Licence for requirements, duration of training and applications.) Candidates in possession of the CPL are strongly advised to thoroughly revise CPL ground school study notes or attend the CPL lectures to create a solid foundation before attempting the ATPL exams.
