General Information Progress Flight Academy is dedicated to developing pilots with a professional attitude and a genuine operational capability at a reasonable cost. Introduction Progress Flight Academy leads the South African flight training industry. Since September 1981 we have been providing full time residential flight training courses at Progress aerodrome and since 1995 have trained pilots for transition to First Officer with airlines. In 2009 we obtained CAA approval for the first Integrated Professional Pilot Course in South Africa. This increased training quality and reduced cost. In 2015 we introduced a Premium Integrated Professional Pilot Course which represents a quantum leap in quality and a substantial enhancement in the operational capability of graduates. The key to this development is the purchase of new Vulcanair P68R EFIS equipped multi-engine piston aeroplanes and Vulcanair P68R type specific simulators. Progress Flight Academy is the only flight school in South Africa using FNPT IIs that precisely replicate the aeroplane used for instrument training. All the procedural and operational instrument training is conducted in multiengine simulators and aeroplanes. This major development enables us to achieve a superlative standard for graduates entering general aviation, and will enhance the transition to First Officer training for airline candidates. The record of successful First Officer training and appointments of our graduates is outstanding. Standards Courses offered by Progress Flight Academy are based on best international practice which is the European Aviation Safety Authority Flight Crew Licencing (EASA-FCL) standard. Our International courses comply with all requirements of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) and the South African Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). Graduates from our Professional Pilot Courses achieve outstanding operational capability. Instructors John English leads the Flight Instructor team. With over 45 years experience as flight instructor, he has both a military and civilian flying background. John holds an Airline Transport Pilot Licence with a Grade 1 Flight Instructor Rating, is a CAA Designated Flight Examiner, and is also a qualified Mechanical Engineer and Aircraft Maintenance Engineer. All our Flight Instructors completed a Professional Pilot Course at Progress Flight Academy, and all are multi engine Instrument Rated full time employees. A Flight Instructor is assigned to each phase of your flight training. The number of students to each instructor is restricted, so that your time is used productively. Ground school lectures are provided by full time instructors of Progress Flight Academy. By limiting the size of courses we ensure that you get the personal attention you deserve, and the instructors are available outside formal lecture times to assist you with personal tuition as necessary. Fleet The type certified Piper Warrior III is used for initial flight training. The seven Warriors in our fleet are late model low wing four seat aircraft with 160 hp Lycoming engines. These aircraft are stable, docile, and easy to handle; they perform well with a good climb rate and cruise speed. The fuel endurance is excellent with very safe reserves for the routes flown, and they are well equipped with modern Garmin GNS 430 avionics and features such as standby instrument air system and emergency locator transmitter. 3 General Information The multi-engine aeroplane is now the high quality Italian Vulcanair P68R. This six seat cabin class high wing aeroplane was designed as a multi-engine aeroplane - the pilot sits ahead of the wing and engines with an uninterrupted view above and below, similar to an airliner. The Vulcanair is equipped with state of the art Garmin G1000 EFIS (Electronic Flight Information System), similar to airline equipment. The quality of design and construction of this aeroplane is outstanding. The Vulcanair P68R is a very stable aeroplane and has the feel of a large aeroplane. The controls have excellent authority such that the demonstrated crosswind capability is an amazing 25 kt. We expect the transition to jet aeroplanes to be easier from this machine than the typical training twins in use. All the aeroplanes are owned, maintained and operated exclusively by the Academy. This ensures uninterrupted availability to students. Flight Simulators We commissioned the design and construction of two Flight and Navigation Procedures Trainer II simulators using actual aeroplane forward fuselage sections that replicate precisely the Vulcanair P68R aeroplane. These FNPT II devices qualify for 40 hours training credit on an integrated course. The quality of training is greatly enhanced as all simulator training is now on this multi-engine equipment. Students have the opportunity to practise instrument approaches in their own area. Maintenance We have our own Aircraft Maintenance Organisation (AMO) that handles all routine service and maintenance. This enables us to keep our aircraft in optimum condition and readily available. Students are also able to gain greater insight into the technical aspects of the course. General Information Page 2 of 3

Somerset East Aerodrome Progress Flight Academy General Information Somerset East is our fair weather base located 120 km north of Progress away from the coastal weather. It is used for Ab-initio training to Private Pilot Standard. The aerodrome has a m asphalt runway and Progress Flight Academy has exclusive use for flight training. The General Flying Area is close to the aerodrome and students are accommodated in our hostel in town. Progress Aerodrome Progress is a private aerodrome developed specifically as a training aerodrome for the exclusive use of Progress Flight Academy to avoid the frustration and wasted time that accompanies flight training at busy airports. The rural setting of grass runways and surrounding woodlands just outside the Port Elizabeth city limits and the paucity of air traffic make it an absolute pleasure for flight training. The General Flying Area is only 4 miles away and Port Elizabeth International Airport is only 13 miles, so we are very well situated for available flying facilities. At the Port Elizabeth Airport we have ready access to world class Navigational and Approach Aids so that Instrument Approach procedures are practised extensively by students and considerable experience of operating in controlled airspace is gained. Progress Campus Students are accommodated in single study-bedrooms in one of the lodges on the aerodrome campus. Each lodge has twelve study-bedrooms, ablutions, a small kitchenette and a lounge with DSTV. Wireless internet access is available free of charge in all lodges. The mess is the focal point of the campus. Our on-site catering staff provides the meals in the dining room. There is a lounge with coffee bar and pool table overlooking the swimming pool. Facilities available to residential students include a library and clubhouse overlooking the runways. Courses include full board accommodation for the duration of the course in one continuous period. This includes three meals a day, tea or coffee at any time, and laundry. Transport Transport is provided between the Port Elizabeth airport and Progress Aerodrome at the beginning and end of the course, for approved breaks, necessary trips such as examination sittings, as well as for periodic outings. Students do not need personal transport. Clothing Students on the Private Pilot Licence course wear smart casual clothing, and on the Professional Pilot Programme wear uniform. 5 Professional Pilot Integrated Course Guide Summary The Integrated Professional Pilot Course is a high quality ab-initio course which prepares the graduate for immediate transition to Jet Orientation and Type Rating on a medium jet airliner. Progress Flight Academy has a twenty two year track record of success in graduates successfully completing jet training and achieving appointment as First Officer. Graduates entering General Aviation have a superlative operational capability. Introduction The aim of the integrated Professional Pilot Course is to train the ab-initio student pilot to the level of proficiency necessary to operate a single pilot multi-engine aeroplane in commercial air transportation. Graduates will obtain the South African Commercial Pilot Licence (Aeroplane) with unrestricted multi-engine Instrument Rating (CPL/IR (ME)). The course enables a student with no previous flight training to achieve a Commercial Pilot Licence and Instrument Rating in one continuous course at the same Aviation Training Organisation. Compared to the traditional Modular route, the integrated course achieves additional instrument flight experience through credit for more simulator time and through Student pilot-in-command (SPIC) time. SPIC allows the student to act as pilot-in-command in visual or instrument flight operations under supervision of a Flight Instructor. The integrated course is two months shorter that the Progress Flight Academy equivalent modular course and is significantly less expensive. The privileges of a Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) above those of a Private Pilot Licence (PPL) are to act as pilot in command in commercial air transportation of any aircraft having a maximum certificated mass of 5700 kg or less, and to act as co-pilot in larger aircraft. Key Benefits Graduates ready for immediate transition to jet aeroplane training Efficient training in an environment that maximises proficiency Modern well equipped Aeroplanes and type specific Flight Simulators Most comprehensive Jeppesen based Airline Pilot ground school Courses modelled on European EASA-FCL standards Entry requirements The applicant for a SA CPL must be at least 18 years of age and in possession of a valid SA Class 1 Flight Crew Medical Certificate. The International recommended entry requirement for a Professional Pilot Course is equivalent to a GCSE O level pass in five subjects, which should include English, Mathematics and a Science subject For South African students this means a Secondary Certificate with University Entrance Endorsement and the required subjects at level 4 or above. If eventual airline employment is envisaged, then the maths should be a level 5 or higher; this is the desired standard for enrolment. For Kenya students this equates to the Kenya Secondary Certificate level C or above, with maths level B desirable for airline employment and for enrolment. Proficiency in the English language is essential. To study the theory a high level 5 language proficiency grading according to the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) is required. Foreign students are able to study English in Port Elizabeth. Each student requires a lap top computer or preferably an ipad for the Jeppesen training material. The Integrated Course is an ab-initio course intended for students with no previous flight training. Students who already possess a Private Pilot Licence may be admitted to the course and allowed some credit towards the flight training hours. Professional Pilot - Integrated Course Guide Page 1 of 6

Professional Pilot Integrated Course Guide Training Objective The objective is to achieve a high operational capability and proficiency as the single pilot of a multi-engine aeroplane in visual and instrument operations, including the ability to safely handle emergencies in any situation. The graduate will, for example, be able to experience an engine failure on a precision instrument approach in instrument flight conditions and achieve a safe outcome. We aim to instil confidence and decision-making skill to achieve command authority. This is vitally important for a pilot not only in general aviation, but also in the airline where the First Officer may have to handle incapacitation of the Captain. And we aim to achieve the superior operational capability that will enable a graduate to successfully handle the very steep learning gradient in the transition to First Officer training for a medium jet airliner. Flight hours The flight time allocated in each module is sufficient for the average student to achieve proficiency. Dual flight instruction hours are planned to achieve the required standard of proficiency, and if a student achieves this standard of proficiency in less hours then some time may be saved. There are some exceptions, such as a requirement for a specific amount of dual instrument training time on the integrated course. The pilot-in-command time, solo and SPIC, is there to meet the regulatory requirements for the licence or rating. Analysing the records over the past eight years for our Kenya Airways cadets we can state that 88% of graduates completed within the planned hours, and the average total time of all graduates is just under the planned course time. The average student at Progress Flight Academy can therefore expect to complete the course without additional unplanned cost. Courses We offer two integrated course alternatives for Professional Pilot training: Domestic CPL/ IR (ME) Integrated Course - for South Africa International CPL/ IR (ME) Integrated Course - for other states The Domestic course has 182 hours of flight time and meets the SA Civil Aviation Regulations (CAR) flight time requirement for the CPL / IR and is intended for candidates who plan to operate in South Africa in general aviation. This course does NOT have the pilot-in-command hours and total aeroplane hours needed for conversion to another International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) state licence. The International course has 235 hours flight time which includes the 100 hours pilot-in-command and 190 hours aeroplane time required for conversion to an ICAO licence outside of South Africa; this course is preferred for any candidate planning an immediate transition to medium jet airliner as the additional solo hours help develop improved command authority. The courses are based on the use of: the Piper Warrior III aeroplane for basic training, and; the Vulcanair P68R aeroplane and Vulcanair P68R Flight and Navigation Procedures Trainer II (FNPT II) for multi-engine training including Line Orientated Flight Training (LOFT). The Vulcanair P68R is equipped with an Electronic Flight Information System (EFIS) similar to that in modern airliners such as the Boeing and the Airbus A320. Professional Pilot - Integrated Course Guide Page 2 of 6

Professional Pilot Integrated Course Guide Duration The planned structure of the integrated courses is: Domestic International Flight training Part 1 - Basic single engine aeroplane: 14 weeks 20 weeks Airline Pilot theory ground school: 24 weeks 24 weeks Flight training Part 2 Multi-engine aeroplane: 16 weeks 22 weeks Total planned duration: 54 weeks 66 weeks 12.4 months 15.1 months Ground Training Private Pilot Standard Ground Training The first week of the course is devoted to theoretical training, which then proceeds in parallel with the flight training; it is a combination of 72 hours of lectures plus individual study. The groundschool covers the basics of Human Factors, Meteorology, Aviation Law, Navigation, Flight Planning and Performance, Engines and Airframes, Principles of Flight and the syllabus for the Radiotelephony Certificate (Aeronautical). Internal examinations are passed for the Private Pilot Standard. ATP Ground Training The Airline Transport Pilot ground-school is conducted in two modules for the Technical and Navigation groups respectively. The Technical subjects are Radio, Instruments, Aircraft Technical and Human Performance. The Navigation subjects are Navigation, Meteorology, Flight Planning, and Aviation Law. The duration of each module is twelve weeks; the lectures are held four hours per day five days a week for eight weeks, followed by three weeks for revision and mock exams. The CAA SA CPL examinations are written in Port Elizabeth on completion of the Mock exams. The course uses Jeppesen training material and each student receives the entire Jeppesen software package to download on their laptop computer or ipad. The course starts with revision of basic maths and general physics that is relevant to the course. Apart from the lectures, working through examples in class consolidates each major concept. Homework assignments (tutorials) are given at regular intervals to consolidate the material and assess understanding. Progress Tests using typical CAA examination questions are conducted every week, and at the end of each module there is a three week revision period during which two full mock examinations are conducted. A full debrief is held on all tests and mock examinations. The CAA examinations are written at CPL level. If desired the student may then write the applicable ATPL subjects; this will require an additional four weeks and the cost of the additional CAA examination fees. Two supplemental CAA examinations are written for Operations (Instrument) and the General Radio Operator Licence. The entire ground-school is designed to be as practical as possible, imparting a true understanding of the subjects and expanding on the CAA exam syllabus in areas where additional practical knowledge will provide better operational capability and safety. For example, students will disassemble and reassemble a Continental O-200 aircraft engine (as fitted to Cessna 150). The lecturers are full-time employees of Progress Flight Academy and are available outside of normal lecture hours for individual tuition where necessary. A full report is sent to the sponsor on completion of each part. A grand total of 756 hours is spent on lectures, tutorials, tests, mock examinations and debriefing. This does not include time spent on flight briefings. Professional Pilot - Integrated Course Guide Page 3 of 6

Professional Pilot Integrated Course Guide Flight Training Our International CPL/ IR (ME) course is described in detail; the Domestic course follows the same general format with variations as detailed below and in the price list. Integrated International CPL/IR (ME) Professional Pilot Course (235 hours) A total of 235 hours flight training is provided in two stages: 150 hours basic single engine aeroplane, and 42 hours light multi-engine aeroplane and 43 hours in type specific FNPT II. Total instrument time in this course is 70 hours, which includes 30 hours in aeroplanes. Multiengine instrument time is 60 hours of which 40 hours is FNPT II and 20 hours in multi-engine aeroplanes (includes 15 hours SPIC). We endeavour to fly as much as possible in actual Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IMC) as this is important to build confidence and operational capability. Students are able to practice approaches applicable to their own geographic area on the Vulcanair P68R flight simulator. Part 1 Basic single engine aeroplane: 150 hours flight time in Piper Warrior aeroplanes. The first twenty weeks of the course are devoted to training to Private Pilot Standard and consolidation during which further general handling and day cross-country solo flights are completed on a Piper Warrior III. For the integrated course a Student Pilot Licence Integrated Course (SPLIC) is issued and used until graduation; this licence has increased privileges over the conventional Student Pilot Licence. Planned dual flight instruction leading to the first solo is 25 hours, and to the Private Pilot Standard is 72 aeroplane hours. The legal minimum of 40 hours is totally inadequate to achieve the level of proficiency necessary to prepare a career student pilot for the multi-engine training to follow. General handling training concentrates on achieving a high degree of precision. Excellence in precision landings is a hallmark of Progress students. The student is required to control approach speed and approach path within a close tolerance. With this sound foundation, the students are taught the correct technique to safely land the aircraft on a chosen spot at the minimum speed. Navigation training is based on traditional methods with great emphasis on map reading technique, the track record, elementary plotting, and simplicity in flight management. The integrated course student will complete the SA CAA Private Pilot Licence General Flight Test and Navigation Flight Test and the logbook is endorsed that Private Pilot Standard has been achieved. A Private Pilot Licence is not obtained. The solo visual navigation consolidation includes three prescribed day navigation routes. Each route is over 300 nautical miles long and involves two away landings; one at a major regional airport with air traffic control and radio navigation aids, the other at a remote country aerodrome out of range of these navigation aids. Use of surface based navigational aids is encouraged. Students are then instructed in Tactical navigation, which involves low-level navigation with precise tracking and accurate timing. This visual navigation training concludes with a Commercial Pilot Licence Standards Navigation Test to the ICAO procedure. Concurrent with this training the student completes the night rating, which requires a basic competency in Instrument Flight. The Night Rating training is planned for 17 hours; this comprises 10 hours instrument training and 7 hours night flight in the Piper Warrior. Note that SA law uniquely specifies 10 hours instrument training for the Night Rating. Garmin GPS with a moving map display is installed in all our aeroplanes; students are taught the correct, intelligent use of GPS during this stage. The night rating is issued and then a prescribed solo night navigation route is flown. Additional navigation flights on long routes to major centres are then flown; students are encouraged to propose routes and plan these flights. Professional Pilot - Integrated Course Guide Page 4 of 6

Professional Pilot Integrated Course Guide Part 2 Multi-engine aeroplane: 85 hours flight time; 42 hours in Vulcanair P68R aeroplane and 43 hours in Vulcanair P68R FNPT II. Flight Training commences on the Vulcanair P68R light twin with the Single Pilot Multi-engine Aeroplane (MEL) Class rating. Training then proceeds with applied instrument training on the Vulcanair P68R multi-engine FNPT II, and concludes with instrument training and general handling consolidation in the Vulcanair P68R, including a solo flight. Multi-engine Class and Type training is very comprehensive; a total of 12 hours dual instruction is planned for the rating (which includes the MEL Class test). The training comprises three hours in the Vulcanair P68R FNPT II followed by 9 hours in the Vulcanair P68R aeroplane. The Single Pilot Multi-engine Aeroplane Class Rating is then issued, after which the student has a solo flight in the Vulcanair P68R. This solo time is very important to the development of the student s confidence and self-esteem, yet Progress Flight Academy is probably unique in allowing such solo flight in a multi-engine aeroplane. Procedural Instrument Flight training uses the Vulcanair P68R FNPT II for 21 hours. Optimum methods have been evolved for visualising instrument indications to achieve maximum situation awareness. The syllabus includes International procedures such as DME arc approaches that are used in many states outside South Africa. This training is then enhanced by 19 hours applied instrument training and Line Orientated Flight Training (LOFT) to develop multi-engine instrument flight skill and gain experience in applied IFR operations. L-NAV and V-NAV (barometric) procedures will be introduced in the Vulcanair P68R FNPT II. Following the FNPT II training the student receives five hours dual instrument flight training in the Vulcanair P68R aeroplane and a 15 hours Student Pilot-in-Command (SPIC) time which includes a LOFT module. The LOFT is conducted in Instrument flight conditions whenever possible, and half this flight time is planned to be at night. The general handling skills are developed in parallel during further flights in the Vulcanair P68R until the required competency is achieved. The emphasis is on achieving a genuine capability as the commander of a multi-engine piston aeroplane. The Instrument Rating and Commercial Pilot Licence flight tests are both taken in the multi-engine Vulcanair P68R. A CAA Designated Flight Examiner conducts the CPL and IR flight tests from Progress aerodrome. There are usually 2 separate flights; a CPL day test, and a night flight for the combined Instrument Rating test and CPL night test.
