BAY AREA AERO CLUB, Inc. Pearland Regional Airport Airfield Lane Pearland, TX October 2013: Night time currency: It is getting dark earlier and a good time to get current with the minimum of three night time landings to a full stop. BAAC HOME PAGE: We have a new Master Phone Number by which you can reach some of the Club s BOD members and/or officers. It is (888) By going through the listings, a specific extension number will be listed and the voice mail will go to the appropriate person. The listing of each officer s number is on our website and listed by their articles. Feel free to use them. This number also serves as a FAX number for you to submit fuel receipts! NOTE: If you don t receive this by and you are a member, that probably means your e- mail address is not in our ScheduleMaster or it is not in there correctly! IMPORTANT DATES: Tuesday October 8 th, 6:30 p.m. Board of Directors meeting. Club members are always welcomed to attend. Members seeking an officer position are encouraged to attend! Tuesday, October 15 24:00 BAAC Bills are due (at the P.O. Box listed on the bill or in the clubhouse). No membership meeting was scheduled for October but it may be announced later. This issue of the BAAC TALK is being composed by Mike Turoff who is acting on behalf of the secretary who has been otherwise occupied with very essential business. CHAIRMAN S COLUMN: Bruce Watkins It was terrific to see a good turnout for the club s annual meeting on September 17. The club members present, along with those who voted absentee, elected the club s board of directors for the upcoming year and approved some changes and additions to the Bylaws. The club members attending the meeting voted to lock in the price of the avgas we purchase at about $5.00 per gallon for the next approximately three months, voted to establish a committee to study the question of the feasibility of the possible purchase of a hangar lot on which to build a hangar home/clubhouse for the club, with such committee to submit a report and recommendations to the club members at a membership meeting to be scheduled in December, voted to seek from the owner of the hangar lot under consideration a right of first refusal on the lot, and voted to reimburse the owner of the Citabria for a window that departed the aircraft during flight. We also, while accomplishing all of that, ate some pizza, drank some beer, and generally enjoyed visiting with fellow club members and participating in a productive, efficient, and successful annual meeting. Thanks to outgoing club President Wayne Moore for presiding over a wellrun annual meeting. Thanks to Arne Aamodt for his efforts in obtaining information on the available hangar lot and approximate costs of acquisition and building. Thanks to Sean Ahsan for arranging for the pizza and beer.

The new board will take office at the October 8 board of directors meeting. The board will select from among its 5 members a new Chairman and the club s President for the upcoming year, and the board will begin to identify and recruit those club members who are willing to serve in club officer positions for the upcoming year. Please read through the section of the Bylaws (on the club website) for a brief description of the responsibilities of each club officer position and let one or all of the members of the new board know if you are willing to volunteer your time and effort to serve your fellow club members as a club officer, or as an assistant officer, for the upcoming year. The financial condition of the club is good, and the finances of the club are transparent, with monthly financial statements and reports presented to the board by the Treasurer at each monthly meeting, and available to any member who attends a board meeting or who simply requests to see those financial statements. Thanks to Jim Rice for his tremendous efforts over the better part of a year s time while serving as the club s Treasurer and creating a workmanlike and efficient financial accounting system for the club, starting essentially from scratch. And thanks to Jim and to Craig Norman for the recent efficient handoff of the Treasurer s duties from Jim to Craig. The club s membership is fairly stable at about 200 members. The club does need to be constantly evaluating its fleet of aircraft available for club members to fly, and looking for potential new aircraft. Please advise the new leadership if you know of someone who owns, or who may want to acquire, an aircraft that can be placed in the club. The club has had a long and successful history, and is well-situated to continue to succeed in providing the members with the opportunity to pursue our common interests in aviation at a reasonably economical cost. See you at the airport. The President s View Wayne Moore president@bayareaaeroclub.org x 101 The 2013 General Membership Meeting and Board of Directors (BOD) election is history. The new Board elected, in case you have been out of touch, was/is. In no particular order, Lonnie Miller, Mike Turnoff, Eric Brookshire, David Fanelli, and Sean Ahsan. The new board will be seated at the October board meeting on Tuesday, the 8 th. Candidates for officer positions should read the job description on the web site and make an appearance at the October board meeting to make their willingness, wishes, competencies, abilities and aptitudes known to the new board. An to each would also be helpful. The Bylaws require that the officers be appointed and take office within six weeks following the BOD election (Article III, Section 1.f). That would probably be at the November BOD meeting at the latest. All three proposed changes to the Bylaws passed also. The current Bylaws including the changes approved at the September meeting are posted on the web site for your review.

The addition of the Cessna 182 P to the fleet is currently awaiting availability of the aircraft for review of it and its documents and execution of the Aircraft Lease Agreement. I personally estimate the rental rate to be about $ plus taxes with the $5.00 per gallon gasoline bulk purchase of 6,000 gallons approved at the meeting. The rental rate would be approximately $ plus taxes at the $5.95 per gallon rate currently in effect. News of the final contract execution and actual rates and check out requirements will be announced as soon as available. Let me take this opportunity to thank James Rice for his excellent work in recovering the financial system for the club without any handoff from the prior Treasurer or President. It was a tremendous task and I can t imagine anyone else doing a more competent job. And, since his resignation as Treasurer, he has devoted many hours to helping Craig Norman, the current Treasurer, with the transition. The club owes both a great big thank you. Craig stepped up when needed and is well qualified to continue as Treasurer. I would hope that the new board keeps him on if he is willing to stay. While I m at it, the club also owes a big thank you to Mike Turoff. With the current Secretary, George Pruett, being extremely busy with unexpected personal and business issues absences, Mike stepped up to assist George by acting in his stead and performing his duties for him. Mike has been the Secretary of the club many years in the past and knows the job front to back. Thanks Mike. Since my tenure as Board Member and President will terminate with the election of the new President from the new BOD, this will be my last President s View column. I wish the new board every success and hope that some very capable candidates apply for the officer positions. Treasurer s Column Craig G. At the writing of this article, I'm pleased to announce that it is a GO. The prices should be going into effect over the next couple of weeks or so. As I mentioned at the General Membership meeting, we will be locked into $5/gallon fuel for approximately 4-6 weeks, regardless of where the fuel prices here at the airport go. Current full service rate at the airport is $5.95, so this is a substantial reduction, which will trickle down into the hourly rental costs. That said, I look forward to seeing more of ya'll around the airport over the next few weeks. BAAC Talk Maintenance Column October: Lee McMillian Hi Folks! Happy Fall! With the fall frontal pattern establishing itself, please be careful.. You know that as the weekly front approaches, the wind will build from the southeast, along with the clouds, and then we'll get a frontal line, possibly with squalls, heavy wind, rain, and, after passage, heavy wind fron the northwest. This will mean that water and foreign objects will be blown into all the nooks and crannies of the aircraft, so please be aware of this when you check the fuel sumps, static ports, pitot tubes, vents, and other places that stuff gets into airplanes. You may also wish to be careful about tire inflation, as well, after frontal passage, as big temperature fluctuations will affect the inflation pressures in the tires. Oil properties change with outside temps, so be aware.

Speaking of oil, if you use some, please log it. If you get into the clubhouse and there is a case or less there, please call me on my cell to let me know (832) so we don't run out. I am not always on the airport, so I do appreciate the help. And speaking of help, keep in mind that while I am the maintenance guy, I am not the janitor, and, the last time I checked, your Mom was not available to clean up after you. There are extra trash bags in the cabinet over the toilet, and Wayne (at the FBO) would be glad to lend you his key to the dumpster, since you are probably taxiing past it anyway. We are hoping to have a C-182 on line pretty soon, and the search for new, leasable aircraft continues. Any leads you have would be appreciated. Reminder: Lean the Citabria as soon as you get her started and running. It may save you front not being able to get her to run up properly once you are at the end of the runway. Pre-flights: You are the Pilot in Command. It is your responsibility to ensure that the plane is airworthy before you fly it. If you miss something in your preflight that breaks while you are out flying, the owner is going to want you to pay for it. Be Safe, Be Aware, have Fun! Commentary by Mike Turoff: Well, another election has passed and we have some new BOD members. New officers will be selected/appointed and by all means, take the advice of those who wrote previously to look up the responsibilities/jobs of those positions, some of which are compensated in flying hours. Remember that if you personally recruit someone to join the Club, be sure to claim that on their application as their sponsor. You will be called to find out what you know about the person you are referring. All applications must go through the process listed in the Bylaws, not handed in at a general meeting for consideration. We have a very specific process for authenticating memberships. As I was writing this up, I got a note that the Arrow had a partial power failure today (9/25) and was landed safely at a ranch airport southwest of Alvin. No damage, just frustration on the part of the pilot. This will be taken care of by maintenance and the owner of the aircraft. If you have an incident, be sure to notify the Safety officer, the aircraft owner, the chief flight instructor and the Board of Directors as soon as practical after the incident. May all your flights end up with usable aircraft!

PEARLAND REGIONAL AIRPORT Airport Lobby: Airfield Ln., Pearland, TX Rwy 14/32: 4300 Left Traffic 14/32 TPA 1000 AMSL ABOUT THE BAY AREA AERO CLUB BAAC Office is located on the south end of the airport. The Bay Area Aero Club (BAAC) is a non-profit Flying Club based at the Pearland Regional Airport. It has been in operation since 1979, and has a membership of approximately 165 members. The Club is managed by six officers who are selected by a Board of Directors. The five members of the Board are elected by the membership at an annual meeting. Monthly meetings are held the second Tuesday of every month at the airport. An Aviation Safety meeting follows every monthly meeting. The membership is diverse and includes students working on obtaining a private license, private and commercial pilots, pilots with instrument and multiengine ratings, CFI and CFII instructors, and airline transport pilots. Each member is covered by a comprehensive insurance policy, and is required to take an annual check ride with a certified Club Instructor. The BAAC has aircraft agreements with several owners to rent their aircraft exclusively to Club members. The Club's fleet varies from time to time, but we try to maintain a mix that includes primary trainers, instrument trainers, complex aircraft, and single-engine cross-country aircraft. Our aircraft are available for local and extended overnight trips.

The BAAC offers an attractive leaseback program for aircraft owners. The Club pays the standard airport ramp tie-down fees and a portion of the aircraft insurance coverage. At this time, we have eight (8) aircraft in the club. They are: C150 C152 C172K PA28-180F PA Cherokee 235 N18593 N49090 N7825T N2201T N44858 N8501N PA-28R-200 Citabria N608 (Retract Gear Arrow) N939AB (Tail Wheel) Current rental rates and much more information can be found on our website: When the applications are completed these may be mailed to the Club secretary for approval. Fees include an initiation fee of $75 (payable at orientation), and monthly dues of $22 payable at the time of the initiation.
