10 State of African Airports In spite of the indicative growth in traffic, infrastructure development has not kept pace with traffic growth in Africa. The Major Airports Development Projects in Africa are depicted at the following three Airports: O. The number of scheduled, non-scheduled and Domestic carriers servicing KIA have increased from 15 in year 2000 to 38 in 2011, a growth of 40% Passenger throughput has improved from 600,000 in 2000 to 1.8 million in 2011, a growth of 35%. This compels development to cope with the heavy demand on the infrastructure

28 Tamale Airport Tamale therefore has been earmarked for development as an international airport and the alternate airport to K.I.A. (First phase is estimated at US$ 142 million) Projects currently being considered for Tamale Airport include: Agro-based industrial potential Great historic heritage and cultural sites Large Muslim population which performs annual hajj Establishment of a maintenance bay Construction of a perishable cargo facility

41 Conclusion With a population of 1.2 billion, coupled with its vast resources, Africa is set to become the world s competitive aviation market. There is however a need for concerted progress towards greater freedom in the movement of passengers and goods within Africa. Greater cooperation amongst African economies can only stand the region in good stead.
