1 Official Publication of Airventurers, a Non-Profit Pilot s Association Volume 57, No.10, Oct FLYING IS THE ONLY WAY TO GO. Judy and I had to go to Carlsbad for a long weekend in July to celebrate her brother s 80th birthday. This was shortly after we had sold our beloved Skylane and it meant that we had to drive from Agoura Hills and then back. UGH! Contrast that with the wonderful experience of flying on September 1st to participate in the fly-in that Barry Rainey did to San Diego. We were not flying in our C-182 but were doing the next best thing. Thanks to the Simanskys for taking us along with them. Judy and I sat in the back with our noise canceling headsets and were able to hear everything that was going on. Of course I had my IPad with the latest ForeFlight update with us. After copying and entering the IFR clearance I was ready to go. It was nice to be able to follow everything that was going on. Talk about being a back seat driver (but I kept my mouth shut.) Dan and Lorraine did a terrific job of getting us there and back. We sure as hell would not have gone if we had to drive. Sure glad that we did not miss this event. We had such a good time in San Diego with the Airventurers that we thought it couldn't get any better than this. But it just keeps getting better. Tim Cashin and Henry Punt planned such a great-sounding fly-in to Lake Powell via the Grand Canyon that we couldn't resist...count us in if we could get some friendly Airventurer to schlep us along. Tim volunteered to take us with him even if it was a little inconvenient for him to pick us up. He had to move his plane to Van Nuys from Santa Monica on Friday because fog was in the forecast for Saturday morning and if he had to wait for it to clear up, then pick us up, he d be late to his own event. What a guy. Thank you, Tim. We had a great weekend with fellow Airventurers even though we no longer have our own plane. Hey isn't that what Airventurers is all about? Helping one another in the air and on the ground? The fly-in to North Las Vegas on Nov for the Aviation Nation Expo at Nellis AFB looks real good...don Eisenberg always runs a good fly-in. Invitations for the Holiday Party are going out this month. It promises to be a very special event...beautiful location, wonderful food, and the club is subsidizing it a bit. Please RSVP ASAP. Marv Rifkin, President DINNER MEETING Sunday, Oct. 15th Lenny s Deli 2379 Westwood Blvd. 6:00 Socializing 6:30 Dinner 7:00 Speaker Our speaker will be Pat Macha on aircraft wrecks in the mountains and deserts of the American West This promises to be a very interesting presentation RESERVE AT AIRVENTURERS.ORG *NOTE: November dinner meeting changed to Nov. 19th due to the fly-in to Nellis AFB on the 10th BOARD MEETING & 2018 FLY-IN PLANNING Signature Aviation, VNY Saturday October 28th 10:00 am To reach the editor: judyrifkin1@charter.net we d like to hear what you have to say

We met early on Friday, the 8th, at Montgomery Field, where we were greeted with coffee and breakfast sandwiches, then vanned it to the harbor where we were met by our docents, Bruce and Marsha Rainey, (Barry s brother and sister-in-law) for our own private tour of the Midway Aircraft Carrier. So special to see and hear about this great ship from someone who actually landed on its deck! After our tour, we walked over to a slightly smaller ship for lunch and a 2-hour cruise around San Diego Bay, narrated by (of course) an old Navy buddy of Barry s. Then some headed to the airport and some to the hotel for happy hour and a nap before dinner. Great flying weather, no bumps, good company who could ask for anything more? Thanks to all four of the Raineys for a very special day.

5 FYI: CalPilots is going to launch its first ever EXPO in Paso Robles on Oct There will be a wine & food reception on the 13th featuring Mark Baker, President of AOPA. The CalPilots board members will also be there, eager to talk to pilots about protecting our airports and airspace. There will be a pancake breakfast on the 14th followed by a State of General Aviation in California by CalPilots President Cori Leach, with the annual meeting to follow. After lunch, there will be an FAA Wings seminar by Captain Brian Schiff on General Aviation Safety. He ll share the secrets airline pilots use to stay safe and secure. Flying near weather or finding an airport, he ll discuss what GA pilots can learn from the pros. After that, there will be 4 seminars, 2 for pilots and 2 for passengers. The pilot seminars will include 1) Basic Med, and 2) Support Your Local Airport. The passenger seminars will be 1) A Flying Companion/Pinch Hitter and 2) Fun Places to Fly in the West. They also plan to have a DART demonstration showing how pilots can assist their airports set up their own Disaster Airlift Response Team. For more information, go to to register for the early-bird discount. MORE THINGS TO PONDER Why do "slow down" and "slow up" mean the same thing? Why do "fat chance" and "slim chance" mean the same thing? It s hard to think about the Holiday Party when we re getting ready for Halloween, but Dec.2nd will be here before you know it. Don t go nuts trick-or-treating or your dress won t fit! IMPORTANT DATES IN October 15 Dinner Meeting 28 Board Meeting November Nellis Fly-in 18 Board Meeting 19 Dinner Meeting, Election December 2 Holiday Party 16 Board Meeting Why do "tug" boats push their barges? Why do we sing "Take me out to the ball game" when we are already there? Why are they called "stands" when they are made for sitting? Why is it called "after dark" when it really is "after light"? Doesn't "expecting the unexpected" make the unexpected expected? Why are a "wise man" and a "wise guy" opposites? Why is "phonics" not spelled the way it sounds?
