1 ATAG The Air Transport Action Group (ATAG) is a coalition of organisations from throughout the air transport industry, formed to press for economically beneficial aviation capacity improvements in an environmentally responsible manner. ATAG is a leading proponent of aviation infrastructure development, advocating the economic benefits of air transport, the industry s excellent environmental performance and the need for major improvements in airport, surface access and air traffic management capacity. ATAG s world-wide membership includes airlines, airports, manufacturers, air traffic control authorities, airline pilot and air traffic controller unions, chambers of commerce, tourism and travel associations, investment organisations, ground transport and communications providers. To achieve its objectives, ATAG: provides support for the expansion of air traffic management capabilities to meet future industry demands. assists in the development of airport capacity to meet growing demand supports the development of improved ground access to airports Recognising that these goals can only be obtained in an environmentally responsible manner, ATAG: emphasises the air transport industry s progress in minimising environmental impact promotes the environmentally responsible growth and development of air transport December 1999 This edition of the European Air Transport Forecasts is the second update of an original report prepared for ATAG by IATA in It covers European domestic and international air traffic through 1998 forecasting up to Air Transport Action Group 33 Route de l'aeroport, P.O. 2 Summary of conclusions Europe s share of worldwide international passenger traffic was 58.9% in 1998 and will decline to 58.0% by 2015 (Page 8). 1 European international passenger traffic will be over two times greater in 2015 than in 1998 (Page 9). Total demand for air transport in Europe was over 541 million passengers in This includes domestic and international passengers to, from and within the region (Page 9). This overall demand will more than double by 2015 to 1,101 million passengers. The projected average annual rate of growth is 4.8% between 1998 and 2005, 4.0% between 2005 and 2010, and 3.8% between 2010 and 2015 (Page 9). International passenger numbers to, from and within Europe amounted to 393 million in They are forecast to increase to 824 million passengers by 2015, an average annual growth rate of 4.4% (Page 9). International passenger traffic to, from and within Europe represented 72.6% of total European passenger traffic in This percentage is expected to increase to 74.8% by 2015 (Page 10). Domestic passenger traffic represented 27.4% of the total for This share is forecast to drop to 25.2% by 2015 (Page 10). The United Kingdom has been and will remain Europe s dominant traffic market. By 2015, 310 million passengers will travel to, from and within the United Kingdom. Europe s other major markets in 2015 will be Germany, Spain, France and Italy (Page 14). The strongest growth in traffic between 1998 and 2015 among the top eight European countries is estimated for the Netherlands, with 5.2% per annum (Page 15). 1 Europe includes countries from Greenland and Scandinavia in the north, to Spain, Greece and Turkey in the south, and from Russia (west of Urals) in the east to the Atlantic ocean in the west (Page 5). Page 2

3 Summary of conclusions (continued) Of passengers travelling on international scheduled services to/from and within Europe, 62% travelled on intra-european routes in This traffic is forecast to grow by 4.3% per annum on average between 1998 and 2015 (Pages 18-19). Routes to and from the Americas dominated intercontinental traffic, with 55 million passengers in However, the routes that will grow the fastest are those to and from the Middle East/Far East (Page 18). The United Kingdom will remain the dominant market for intercontinental traffic to and from the Americas and Asia. However, for Africa, France will remain the main market (Pages 20-22). Within Europe, the dominant international traffic flows in 1998 were between the United Kingdom and Spain (15.5 million passengers), Germany and Spain (14.9 million passengers) and the United Kingdom and Ireland (8.5 million passengers) (Page 23). The most heavily travelled routes within Europe in 1998 include Madrid - Barcelona, Milan (LIN)-Rome (FCO) and Paris (ORY)-Nice (Page 24). The opening of the Channel Tunnel has had a more serious effect on the ferry companies than the airlines in terms of the market share of passenger movements to/from the United Kingdom (Page 25). Secondary airport traffic grew more rapidly than traffic at major European hub airports between 1994 and 1998, except in the Netherlands (Page 28). Lufthansa and British Airways were the largest European airlines in Each carried more than 35 million passengers on international and domestic routes (Page 29). Low-cost carriers have become an integral part of the European aviation scene. Although they have only a very small share of the passenger market, their marketing profile and influence is being felt throughout the industry (Pages 31-32). Page 3

4 Forecast Methodology Methodology Historic domestic and international passenger traffic data was collected from each individual European Civil Aviation Authority, to produce a consolidated total for Europe. Double counting of passengers travelling between countries within Europe was avoided by dividing the number of passengers identified as travelling within Europe by two. Charter passengers The distinction between scheduled and charter traffic has become blurred as some countries, e.g. Germany and Sweden, no longer report passenger traffic as schedule or charter. In this forecast, we could not make a meaningful distinction between international/domestic scheduled and charter passenger traffic. Therefore international and domestic passenger traffic are used instead. IATA Passenger Forecast data Passenger traffic volumes between European countries and individual world regions shown in pages 18 to 22 came from IATA country-pair passenger traffic information, obtained for the production of the IATA Passenger Forecast. These passengers were identified as being international scheduled passengers. Page 4

5 European region : Definition In this report, Europe is divided into two sub-regions: Western Europe: Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Denmark, Faeroe Islands, Finland, France (excluding overseas territories), Germany, Gibraltar, Greece, Greenland, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal (including Azores and Madeira), San Marino, Spain (including Canary Islands), Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom. Each component includes both scheduled and charter traffic. Definition of domestic traffic : Traffic within each European state is considered as domestic. Traffic between metropolitan France and its overseas territories is not considered as domestic but part of Europe-Caribbean. Traffic between States, and within the Schengen 2 area, is considered as international over the forecast period A group of EU countries (excluding UK, Denmark, Ireland, Sweden and Greece) through which goods and people can move without government controls.
