4 Average Departure Performance by Nation Figure 1 shows the average ontime departure performance by nation in September. The blue color represents the best on-time departures and red represents the worst on-time departures. Among the 43 countries covered in this report, Norway takes the top spot with 96.31% on-time departure performance, followed by Panama (96.07%) and Japan (95.83%). China still ranks at the bottom of the list, but its on-time departure performance rises 7.5 percentage points over the previous month. 5 Major International Departure Performance in September Figure 2 shows the major international airport on-time departure performance in September. The blue color represents the best on-time departures and red represents the worst on-time departures. Among the 58 major international airports with over 90% on-time departure performance, 16 are located in Asia and 20 in Europe. 20 Appendix Definitions in the Report Definitions of Delays : A flight is considered on-time if it takes off (with the wheels off the ground) less than 30 minutes after the scheduled departure time. : A flight is classified as late if it takes off minutes after the scheduled departure time. : A flight is classified as very late if it takes off minutes after the scheduled departure time. : A flight is classified as excessively late if it takes off 60 minutes after the scheduled departure time., Cancellations and Flight Completions : size data is a count of the number of flights for which VariFlight was able to capture actual departure, arrival or cancellation data. & Delay Calculations: The calculation of on-time and delayed flight percentages include only those flights that were completed and for which VariFlight was able to collect final status. flights are not included in the delay calculations by subtracting the number of cancellations from before calculating on-time percentage. Cancellation: The number of cancelled flights is divided by the. Selection Criteria and Rank Among the world s major 200 airports with the largest number of scheduled flights, typically 80% coverage is needed for an airport to be included in the analysis (However, in Asia and Europe the coverage threshold was set at 70% to include a couple of key airports in the analysis). VariFlight has selected 171 major airports to be ranked by their on-time departures. Chart 14 shows the actual flight data coverage of the 171 major airports.
