Agenda Introduction Background and NextGen value proposal FAA & ICAO ICAO Form, Similarities & Differences Filling Box 10 (EQT, SRV, PBN) Garmin-Specific Information Examples (Different Planes, ForeFlight+Garmin) Summary

Introduction Private Pilot with 1400h+ Single Engine Land and Sea Drone, Glider Instrument Rated Sales executive in a global IT services company Member of AOPA, EAA, SSA, SPA, CAF and W&W President of the Carolina Aero Club

Flight Planning Background Current National Airspace System ATC radar environment has a slant limitation Hence the 1000ft traffic vertical separation below FL290 FAA Form (domestic)

Flight Planning Background (cont d) But did you know Airlines already adopted ICAO format long time ago FAA recommends using ICAO format for domestic flights (AIM 5-1-9b) FAA originally mandated all domestic flight plans to be filed with ICAO format by Oct 2015? Following push back by AOPA, the new date (for GA) was Oct 2016 Then June Now end of 2017! Are you prepared?

So what is ICAO? International Civil Aviation Organization - Part of the United Nations organization - This is most known as the organization in charge of the 4-letter airport codes (e.g. KEQY) vs. the IATA 3- letter ones - But also adopts standards and recommended practices for air navigation, infrastructure, flight inspection, prevention of interference and facilitation of border-crossing procedures - Since 1944, 191 members

Needed today (4 reasons) RVSM (Reduced Vertical Separation Minimum) - Out of scope for most of GA: >FL290 to FL410 PBN (Performance Based Navigation) i.e. RNAV SIDs and STARs ADS-B Services International Flight (e.g. Canada, Bahamas) - That s how it started (for me)

FAA Form or ICAO Form same new

Similar but New Section and Codes for more information: - Type of flight (G for GA) - Turbulence (L for Light <15,000 lbs) - Equipment (box 10) - Other information (box 18) where it ends - Survival (Eqt, life jackets, radio, ELBA, dinghy)

Equipment (box 10) Equipment: COM/NAV Note: old materials have PBN in other information, now field moved to Eqt Source: Foreflight

Equipment (box 10) Equipment: SURV TPX Source: Foreflight

Equipment (box 10) Equipment: PBN (RNAV, will consider RNP out of scope) Source: Foreflight

Summary What to remember? ICAO flight plan is the NextGen flight plan Can already use it if not ADS-B equipped yet Not obliged to use it if ADS-B equipped (but good practice) Many fields are similar to the domestic form A la carte (vs. bundle), more details shared with ATC for better routing Box 10 Eqpt is feature rich Box 18 Other Information is required for PBN and SUR Use AIM as a guideline AOPA, FAA, ipadpilotnews, ForeFlight, Garmin resources available Leverage manufacturers info to properly completed all fields Safe Flying!
