4 II. GRAMMAR REVIEW: Topic: Verbs + Gerunds or Infinitives (5-6 minutes) Gerunds are nouns that are formed by adding ing to verbs. Infinitives, on the other hand, are also nouns that are formed by adding the word to before a verb. When a verb follows another verb, the following verb could either be a gerund or an infinitive. e.g. travel (verb) + ing= travelling (gerund) = I enjoy travelling around the world. to + fly (verb) = to fly (infinitive) = I want to learn how to fly an airplane. Remember: Although gerunds and infinitives have different forms, sometimes they have the same function in the sentence. Examples: Gerund Infinitive 1) The plane started taking off. 1) The plane started to take off. 2) The flight attendant continued giving safety instructions even though nobody was listening. 2) The flight attendant continued to give safety instructions even though nobody was listening. 3) I prefer sleeping during long flights. 3) I prefer to sleep during long flights. Comprehension Check: Construct a sentence which can use either a gerund or infinitive and still retain the same meaning. 4
