VICTORIA Project Introduction (1/2) Validation platform for Integration of standardised Components, Technologies and Tools in an Open, modular and Improved Aircraft electronic system Part of the 2 nd call of the 5 th Framework Programme ( ) Contractual Instrument: "Technology Platform" (TP9) Key Action 4 "New perspective in Aeronautics" Coordinator: THALES Avionics VICTORIA was the biggest ever European project in avionics : 34 partners from 10 European countries 83 M (half funded) VICTORIA was launched in January 2001, and lasted 47 months (up to end 2004) VICTORIA CONSORTIUM VICTORIA Presentation to the Aeronautics Days 2006, 19 th June 2006, Vienna Page 4

VICTORIA Project Introduction (2/2) "The VICTORIA project aimed to prepare a new generation of aircraft electronic systems, featuring modular, reusable and reconfigurable components" so as to: improve performance, availability and flexibility (adaptability, upgradeability) of avionics shorten the software development, modification and qualification process reduce the through-life cost of avionics The 4 key features of VICTORIA: 1/ The IMA (Integrated Modular Avionics) concept with 2/ An approach including both the safety-critical and open worlds: IME (Integrated Modular Electronics) 3/ The introduction of new functions & services on-board the aircraft, 4/ A strong joint standardisation effort on key international aeronautical standards VICTORIA CONSORTIUM VICTORIA Presentation to the Aeronautics Days 2006, 19 th June 2006, Vienna Page 5

VICTORIA Project Links with previous projects VICTORIA is the follow-up of a long term global European initiative on the definition of new on-board electronic systems, based on IMA: FP5 VICTORIA 34 partners In-company exploitation ANAÏS 14 partners PAMELA 14 partners FP4 NEVADA 12 partners VICTORIA CONSORTIUM VICTORIA Presentation to the Aeronautics Days 2006, 19 th June 2006, Vienna Page 7

Key features: IMA/IME concept VICTORIA was based on the IMA concept, but extended it to encompass the aircraft systems of both the avionics and the open world: This is the IME (Integrated Modular Electronics) concept Open World Avionics World Maintenance Passenger & Crew services Classical avionics services Availability, Flexibility, Customisable COTS, Ethernet Gateway Firewall Safety, Security IMA, LRU VICTORIA CONSORTIUM VICTORIA Presentation to the Aeronautics Days 2006, 19 th June 2006, Vienna Page 8

Key features: New functions & services VICTORIA deals with the adaptation of existing functions to the "IME" architecture and technology, as well as the introduction of new functions & services on-board the aircraft, Examples of new on-board functions & services developed in VICTORIA : Cockpit: new Men Machine Interface (MMI), new functions (e.g. Airport Navigation Function (ANF), Surface Collision and Avoidance Function (SCAF)) On-board information services (OIS): new MMI, new services for passenger crew and maintenance personnel Passenger services: communication / business / entertainment needs: 3D moving map TV on demand internet access corporate intranet Wifi hot spot VICTORIA CONSORTIUM VICTORIA Presentation to the Aeronautics Days 2006, 19 th June 2006, Vienna Page 9

Key features: Open standards Open standards play an important role in the implementation and integration of complex systems on modern aircraft. Aircraft Electronic Systems are becoming : more capable with greater functionality larger and more complex more tightly integrated, with increased and more adaptable interconnectivity and greater inter-dependencies. This is recognised within VICTORIA. We have worked to demonstrate the application of standards. We have sought to feed our experiences and the results of the VICTORIA project into the international standards community. To fully implement an IMA/IME architecture a suite of standards is required, we have chosen to select the critical standards and focus our developments on these. They are notably A664: AFDX standardisation, WG 60 - IMA Certification, A661, A628 VICTORIA CONSORTIUM VICTORIA Presentation to the Aeronautics Days 2006, 19 th June 2006, Vienna Page 10

Project VICTORIA: Technical Objectives The main technical objectives of VICTORIA were: To validate the feasibility of an architecture based on the IME concept and open standards To demonstrate the ability to use the same hardware/software (resources and components) for different domains, systems, functions on board (e.g. use the same Core Processing Modules (CPM) in different domains) To demonstrate the ability to implement several functions on common resources To check the feasibility of components / modules compliant with the new standards, To demonstrate the feasibility of using standardised software interfaces To realise and evaluate new avionics functions To validate new cockpit MMI principles such as windowing, bitmap presentation, interactivity dialog To be pro-active in standardisation throughout and beyond Europe VICTORIA CONSORTIUM VICTORIA Presentation to the Aeronautics Days 2006, 19 th June 2006, Vienna Page 12
