1 58th COUPE AÉRONAUTIQUE GORDON BENNETT WORLD DISTANCE GAS BALLOON CHAMPIONSHIP DATE, PLACE & LAUNCH PERIOD: The launch place will be located at Vichy city (racecourse). Depending weather permission, the gas balloon will be launched on August 29 after 16h00 UTC. A delay to August 31 may be used if necessary to assure a safe and successful race (time window fixed by the event director). CROSS BORDER RACE: 20 GAS BALLOONS representing several countries (France, Poland, Austria, Russia, Germany, UK, USA, Spain, Italy and Switzerland) are registered. 2 pilots are available on board in each balloon. The winner will be the team covering the greatest distance. Be aware that GAS BALLOON endurance can exceed 70h and the flying height of a gas balloon is generally above the inversion layer (do not mix up with Hot Air balloon which have a couple of hours endurance and flies near the ground). Calling a gas balloon (Charlière) as a hot air balloon (Montgolfière) may give a wrong information and then may lead other pilots to a misunderstanding. SUPPORTS: In order to help ATCs dealing with the specific conduct of the flight and the rules of that race, DGAC has created different supports. 2 INSTRUCTIONS: Evolution in French Airspace will be limited to FL195 (exceptions in Appendix I). All flights will be carried out under Visual Flying Rules (Night and Day). VFR NIGHT flight may be undertaken: in non-controlled airspace Class G. with clearance before entering Class D, C. separation will be ensured between IFR and VFR night flight. traffic information will be provided between Night VFR / Night VFR. Radio contact and Transponder Mode S are compulsory to obtain ATC clearance before 30 minutes prior any transit in Controlled airspaces (Class D, C, Military area) and to cross the border. The radio message will contain the following information: «Gas Balloon/ call sign (registration mark) / Gordon Bennett race/ Position: FL or altitude (in feet) / Speed (in knots) / estimate entry zone at (location of report point) / estimate route (heading in degrees) and estimate exit zone at (hour and location) / squawking (7000 or given by former ATC) / request to transit (airspace name)» EQUIPMENTS: 2 VHF sets / TRANSPONDER Mode S/ GPS/ Aeronautical maps and documents with ATC com Frequencies / Strobe and beam LIGHTS / life survival equipment for OVERSEA flight/ ELT /Oxygen supply. With a minimum 5 hours notice before LAUNCH, the organizer will notify any change of number of balloons and registrations, and confirm if possible the expected track. The crews will make sure that the flight plans (FPL) are closed before landing (using radio with controller) or just after landing by phone, number «AZUR - FPL closure» (33) ). 2
