Study Unit 1 Airplane Instruments Page 22, Subunit 1.4, 2.b.: This update corrects a reference to the components of a body related to deflection. 1.4 GYROSCOPES 1. Listen to your electric gyroscopes for unusual noises after the battery is turned on but before the engine is started. 2. One of the characteristics of a gyro is that it is resistant to deflection of the spinning wheel, which is based on two of Newton s laws of motion. a. A body at rest will continue at rest, and a body in motion will continue in motion in a straight line until acted upon by an outside force. b. Deflection of a moving body is proportional to the deflective force applied and inversely proportional to the body s weight mass and speed. One characteristic that a properly functioning gyro depends upon for operation is the A. ability to resist precession 90 to any applied force. (IFH Chap 5) DISCUSSION: Newton s second law of motion states that the deflection of a moving body is proportional to the deflective force applied and is inversely proportional to its weight mass and speed. For a gyro, the resistance to deflection is proportional to the deflective force. This property is used by the attitude indicator. Answer (A) is incorrect. Precession is the name for the reaction to deflection. The gyro uses precession, not resists it. Answer (C) is incorrect. The deflective force is applied to, not developed by, the gyro.

Prior to which operation must an IFR flight plan be filed and an appropriate ATC clearance received? A. Flying by reference to instruments in controlled airspace. B. Entering controlled airspace when IMC exists. C. Takeoff when IFR weather conditions exist. Answer (B) is correct. (FAR ) DISCUSSION: No person may operate an aircraft in controlled airspace under IFR when instrument meteorological conditions (IMC) exist unless (s)he has filed an IFR flight plan and received an appropriate ATC clearance. Answer (A) is incorrect. You may fly by reference to instruments with a safety pilot in VFR weather conditions without an IFR flight plan or an IFR clearance. Answer (C) is incorrect. An IFR flight plan is not required until you enter controlled airspace. Study Unit 6 Holding and Instrument Approaches Page 191, Subunit 6.7, 8.b.5): This update expands the outline covering minimum stabilized approach heights. 5) The descent rate should be less than 1,000 fpm before descending below the following minimum stabilized approach heights. a) For a visual approach or straight-in instrument approach in VFR weather conditions, the approach must be stabilized before descending below 500 feet above the airport elevation. b) For the final segment of a circling approach maneuver, the approach must be stabilized 500 feet above the airport elevation or at the MDA, whichever is lower. 6) Once on a stabilized approach and below 500 feet AGL, the bank angle should be less than 15. Page 270, Subunit 6.12, Question 133: This update switches answer choices A and B so that A is the correct answer (Refer to Figure 129 on page 271.) What is the recommended descent angle and descent rate for the RNAV RWY 36 approach with a groundspeed of 105 knots? A and feet per minute. B and feet per minute. C and 557 feet per minute. Answer (A) is correct. (IPH Chap 1) DISCUSSION: A notation in the profile view of the approach confirms the approach angle is To confirm the second portion of the answer, do the following. Note the distance from LABER to a point 5 NM from the MAP is 5 NM. In that distance you will lose 1,500 feet (3,300 1,800 = 1,500). With a groundspeed of 105 knots you can use your E6B to calculate a time of 2.85 minutes to cover the 5 NM. 1,500 (feet) 2.85 (minutes) = 526 feet per minute, almost exactly the same descent rate stipulated by this answer. SUXYO is defined as which of the following? A. Fly-byover waypoint. B. Initial approach waypoint. C. Fly-to waypoint. Answer (B) is correct. (IPH Chap 2) DISCUSSION: The SUXYO waypoint is a fly-overby waypoint, as indicated on the instrument approach chart by a four-point star. It is also an initial approach fix, as indicated by the letters IAF above its designation on the chart. Answer (A) is incorrect. SUXYO is an initial approach fix, thus making it a fly-overby waypoint, not a fly-byover waypoint. Answer (C) is incorrect. Waypoints exist in two forms, fly-over and fly-by, not fly-to. Study Unit 7 Aeromedical Factors Page 313, Subunit 7.1, 3.: This update corrects one of the symptoms of hypoxia. 3. Symptoms of hypoxia include an initial feeling of euphoria but lead to more serious concerns such as headache, decreased delayed reaction time, visual impairment, and eventual unconsciousness. a. Symptoms of hypoxia are difficult to detect before the pilot s reactions are affected. Study Unit 9 Aviation Weather Services Page 384, Subunit 9.9, Question 50: This update corrects the location referred to in the question and clarifies wording in the answer explanations. 50. The 24-Hour Low Level Significant Weather Prog at 12Z indicates that southwestern West Virginia will likely experience A. ceilings less than 1,000 feet, visibility less than 3 miles. B. clear sky and visibility greater than 6 miles. C. ceilings 1,000 to 3,000 feet and visibility 3 to 5 miles. Answer (A) is correct. (AWS Sect 8) DISCUSSION: The 24-hr. significant weather prognostic chart (SFC-400MB) is on the upper right panel. When conducting a missed approach from the LOC/DME RWY 21 approach at PDX, what is the Minimum Safe Altitude (MSA) while maneuvering between the runway and BTG VORTAC? A. 4,400 4,200 feet MSL. B. 3,500 feet MSL. C. 6,200 feet MSL. Answer (A) is correct. (ACL) DISCUSSION: According to the missed approach instructions, the pilot should perform a climbing right turn to 4,400 4,200 ft. en route to the BTG VORTAC. Answer (B) is incorrect. While the published MSA for a course between the runway and the VORTAC is 3,500 ft., you should always use the highest altitude applicable to a given flight segment, in this case, the missed approach instructions of 4,400 4,200 ft. Answer (C) is incorrect. An MSA of 6,200 ft. would apply to flight between the radial and the 300 radial of the BTG VORTAC, an area to the northeast of the course described.
