Sawasdee Krup Applications of RFID in Aviation Symbol RFID Ecosystem Summit Bangkok May 2006 Louis Kirk

Topics Symbol Products in Airports 2 Common Questions About RFID IATA Initiatives Standards & Compliance Applications Summary Uses for Symbol s Products in an Airport

Airport Products Wireless Infrastructure Baggage Reconciliation Passenger Tracking Cargo Baggage Primary WS 5100 Standby WS 5100 AP300 WAN Router Switch a/b/g Access Ports Application Server Barcode Readers Boarding Gate Baggage Reconciliation Cargo Airport Products RF Readers and Antenna Baggage Cargo Passenger Tracking RF Tags Baggage Processing Passenger Processing Cargo

2 Common Questions About RFID Why RFID? RFID is a proven technology that is in use right now RFID is an enabling technology RFID out-performs barcode It is being implemented in several airports and for several airlines now cargo, baggage & parts inventory For baggage and cargo it is the (eventual) replacement for barcode

What s Wrong With Barcode? Nothing, except it s as good as its going to get For applications like barcoded boarding passes or stand alone baggage reconciliation, barcode is perfect For baggage and cargo, RFID is better. Consider baggage: 90% read rate for originating baggage (10% failure rate) 65-70% read rate for transfer baggage (30% plus failure rate) Typical Asian Airport 34 Million Passengers 60,500 bags per day 50% locally checked; with 90% read rate 50% transfer; with 70% read rate = 12,100 (20%) bags per day fail to read If 1% (121/day) of these bags fail to make the flight, the annual cost, at $125/ bag, to the combined airlines = US$5.5m If the home carrier has 60% of the traffic, it is costing them $3.3m per year

IATA Initiatives IATA Initiatives IATA has announced the following 5 initiatives for 2007 Barcoded Boarding Passes ** Common Use Self Service (CUSS) RFID for Baggage ** E-Cargo ** Electronic Ticketing Objective: Reduce operating costs for airlines

Standards & Compliance Standards IATA standard for baggage Is RP1740c ISO C (EPC) Each RF application will have an Application Identifier encoded on the tag so that baggage is not confused with cargo or retail products, etc IATA RF standards do not exist yet for applications other than baggage, but they are being developed by IATA working groups

Compliance Compliance to industry standards is very important to Symbol Symbol participates on various ISO, IATA and other industry standard setting groups In baggage, Hong Kong, Las Vegas & Asiana all comply with IATA standards We have a responsibility to guide our customers to follow industry standards Application Areas For RFID

RFID Applications Passenger Processing Baggage Cargo Warehouse/Parts Other Passenger Applications Security & Immigration Enables passengers to be processed faster through immigration and security check-points. Lounge Using RFID to enter and exit a lounge provides airlines location information on their valued passenger. It eliminates searching for the passenger who is in the lounge and provides another level of customer service Tracking Allows airline & airport staff to know the last know location of a missing passenger

RFID for the Passenger Boarding Pass Printer Issue Boarding Pass With RF Tag to Passenger S e c u r i t y Lounge Readers In terminal Departure Gate Departure Gate Departure Gate Agent s PDA Green = passenger flow Red = data communications RF reader Airline Host Or Local Sever - Display missing passenger list - Display last seen location Baggage

RF Bag Tag & Inlay Top portion of bag tag With printed information Substrait Antenna The Chip Bottom portion of tag liner Hong Kong

Hong Kong Intl. Airport Problem 24 Million bags per year Inefficient process of tracking bags into right ULD Improve capacity of baggage handling system Process improvement for reconciliation system Solution Symbol RFID solutions for baggage carousels, ULDs, conveyors and mobile applications Over 100 conveyor lines, 200+ RFID reader arrays Benefits Improved customer service Eliminated manual scanning at loading Reduce load time Automatic electronic container manifest ULD to bag location & validation HKIA RFID project is Asia s largest RF Antenna Barcode Readers

Hand Scanning Barcode Lateral: ULD Loading Point Guide Rail Antennas & Display Unit Top Belt ULDs Curbing Bottom Belt

Las Vegas Las Vegas McCarran Airport Problem Barcode reading issues Need to track baggage on conveyors to screening machines and to baggage make-up areas Baggage volume constantly increasing 70,000 per day Solution Symbol EPC RFID readers Symbol RFID bag tags provided near 100% visibility regardless of speed and orientation Benefits Increased Customer Service TSA Compliance End-to-end Baggage Visibility McCarran was the first airport to commit to all bags, all airlines

EDS Screening with RFID Cleared Failed Sort System To Screening E D S E D S E D S E D S E D S Manual Inspection Cleared Failed RF Reader HBS With RF Reader Level-2 Screening Barcode Reader Sort System Level-1 Screening RF Reader Tracking Interface RF Reader Image Server Accessible by License Plate Failed Level-2 Failed to Read Lost in Tracking Level-3 Screening

Screening & Security Most importantly: You can not successfully do security applications with barcode IATA RP1740c has security encoding specifications as recommended by the US TSA Encoding a tag after the screening process helps assure that only clean bags will be loaded onto an aircraft Asiana Airlines

Asiana Airlines Problem Domestic airports Multiple flights on same carrousel Mis-loading of bags Solution by HiTrax Symbol RFID solutions for baggage carousels, ULDs, conveyors Encoding of License Plate at check-in counter Benefits Overhead antenna and light to alert ground handler about a bag Reduced mishandled baggage Send customer SMS when bag loaded Display passengers seat number at claim carrousel Baggage Sorting UHF READER UHF READER UHF READER UHF READER UHF READER UHF READER

Pilot Study High level scope Place RF tags on all rotable parts in the Heathrow warehouse Integrate with Ultramain process Provide automated tag printing Objectives Demonstrate potential savings using RFID Improve visibility of critical parts Provide clear measurement of impact of pilot Improve service provided by the warehouse Test the technology Hardware Printronix SL-9000 RFID Printer RFID Reader module EPC Class-1 Gen-2 compatible XML Printing enabled Symbol MC-9000G Handheld Reader EPC Class 1 Gen 2 Ready Windows Mobile 2003 Symbol Wireless LAN Infrastructure Wireless Switch WS 2000 Wireless Access Port AP 300 with external antennas

Anticipated Benefits Supply Chain Management Improved visibility of spare parts Improved inventory control, reduced stock levels Process efficiencies data accuracy and management Improved process control Accuracy Eliminate misplacement of high value assets / greater accountability Reduction of manual errors in data recording and entry Anticipated Benefits Cadence Improved turnround performance of components through stores Automated tracking and checking of inventory Reduction of manual errors in data recording and entry Automated verification of asset movement Industry European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) guidelines traceability and authenticity of aircraft components Integration with RFID specifications Airbus and Boeing aircraft supply chain

Other Applications Other Applications Food Trolleys Assets Employee Access Vehicle Access others

Summary Something To Take Away RFID works in aviation applications There are many areas for RFID in aviation Baggage, cargo, passenger, security It is a proven technology Hong Kong, Las Vegas, Asiana & Virgin There are IATA standards for baggage Standards are being developed for other applications, such as cargo Most importantly we have an aviation team to support you Michael Saunders, Marty Adickes & Lou Kirk
