1 1.0 TRAFFIC SUMAPRY During the month of 2010, all operational airports (taken together) handled thousand aircraft movements (excludes general aviation movements), million passengers and thousand tonnes of Freight. The details are given in the table below. TABLE-1.1: TOTAL TRAFFIC HANDLED IN APRIL 2010 VS APRIL 2009 Category % Change Aircraft Movement (in 000) International Domestic Total General Aviation (in 000) Passengers (in million) International Domestic Total Freight (in 000 tonnes) International Domestic Total The above table reveals that the aircraft movements, passenger and freight traffic have gone up by 2.1 per cent, 22.0 per cent and 26.8 per cent respectively during 2010 over traffic handled during The detailed traffic analysis is given in the succeeding paragraphs. 2.0 AIRCRAFT MOVEMENTS: 2.1 TRAFFIC TRENDS: APRIL 2010 vis-à-vis APRIL TOTAL AIRCRAFT MOVEMENTS: The total aircraft movements (International and Domestic) handled in 2010 has shown an increase of 2.1 per cent as compared to the aircraft movement handled in 2009 (referred to Annexure-I). Growth rates of traffic handled by different airports are given below. 2 Most of the major airports have witnessed upward trend during the month of 2010 compared to 2009 and the traffic has recovered substantially compared to the recent months. Introduction of Indigo airlines from July 2009 and increased frequencies of operation by Jet airways and Kingfisher airlines at Patna airport is contributed to higher growth INTERNATIONAL AIRCRAFT MOVEMENTS: The international aircraft movement has increased by 3.8 per cent during the period under review. Growth rates of traffic handled by different airports are given below. Major increases (in per cent) are at airports Annexure-IIA: Kolkata 12.5 Amritsar 43.8 Goa 20.2 Delhi(DIAL) 7.7 Trivandrum 21.9 Cochin(CIAL) 6.6 Introduction of services of Mahan Air from July 2009 and Qatar Airways from October 2009 at Amritsar airport has contributed to higher growth. The higher growth in traffic at other airports is due to increase in frequency by existing airlines / start of operations by new airlines DOMESTIC AIRCRAFT MOVEMENTS: The domestic aircraft movements have increased marginally by 1.7 percent during 2010 compared to movements handled in Growth rates of traffic handled by different airports are given below. 4 3.0 PASSENGERS TRAFFIC: TRAFFIC TREND: APRIL 2010 vis-à-vis APRIL TOTAL PASSENGERS TRAFFIC: The total passenger traffic during the reporting month has shown a remarkable increase of 22.0 per cent as compared to It reveals from the reported traffic data that the passengers traffic growth has recovered substantially during 2010 compared to the recent months. Growth rates of traffic handled by different airports are given below. 5 3.1.3 DOMESTIC PASSENGER TRAFFIC: The domestic passenger traffic in 2010 has increased to 8.19 million from 6.44 million in 2009 registering an increase of 27.3 per cent. Growth rates of traffic handled by different airports are given below. Major increases (in per cent) are at airports (Annexure IIIB): Calicut 41.4 Pune 36.7 Guwahati 49.4 Lucknow 49.2 Srinagar 55.2 Bagdogra 81.1 Delhi(DIAL) 34.0 Patna 80.2 Bangalore(BIAL) 28.1 Bhubaneshwar 44.3 Hyderabad(GHIAL) 30.6 Indore 49.0 Cochin(CIAL) 27.9 Agartala 49.0 Nagpur(MIPL) 64.1 Chandigarh 42.3 All the airports except Port Blair, Trichy and Madurai airports have witnessed an increasing trend in domestic passengers due to higher seat load factor of the airlines during 2010 and low base month ( 2009) figures. 7 4.1.2 INTERNATIONAL FREIGHT TRAFFIC: The international freight traffic has registered an increase of 21.2 per cent during the month of 2010 as compared to the traffic handled in Growth rates of traffic handled by different airports are given below. Major increases (in per cent) are at airports (Annexure-IVA): Chennai 28.9 Calicut 40.9 Ahmedabad 59.7 Amritsar Goa 38.3 Bangalore(BIAL) 38.2 Trivandrum 40.3 Trichy 44.8 Significantly higher growth rate registered at Amritsar airport is due to export cargo handled by nonscheduled freighter service. Higher growth rate registered at Trichy airport is due to increased export freight handled by Air Lanka DOMESTIC FREIGHT TRAFFIC: The domestic freight traffic has increased to thousand tonnes in 2010 from thousand tonnes freight handled in 2009 resulting into an increase of 38.2 per cent. Most of the airports have witnessed remarkable increase during 2010 due to start of freight handling by low cost airlines at the most of the major airports. Growth rates of traffic handled by different airports are given below. The overall share of Low Cost Airlines for the month of 2010 was increased significantly to 39.3 per cent in the domestic passengers traffic compared to 35.4 per cent in The detailed Airport-wise percentage share of private airlines in domestic traffic is given in the table 5.1. The dispersion of traffic is depicted in the chart 6.1 for the month of The table 6.1 shows that seventeen international airports have major share in the country s air traffic i.e per cent, 85.7 per cent and 96.5 per cent in aircraft movements, passengers and freight traffic respectively. 12 Region has registered highest growth (52.7%) followed by Eastern Region (28.8%) and Northern Regions (23.3%) in the total passenger traffic during 2010 compared to Growth rate in total passenger traffic is much more than those of aircraft movements traffic in all regions, which attributes efficient seat load factor particularly in domestic category. North East Region has witnessed highest growth of (48.3%) in total freight followed by Southern Region (32.7%) and Northern Region (26.1%) during 2010 over REGION WISE SHARE: Southern Region has the highest percentage share in total Aircraft Movement (32.5%) followed by Western Region (29.1%) and Northern Region (24.1%). Southern Region (31.8%) has the highest percentage share in total passenger traffic followed by Western Region (29.6%) and Northern Region (26.3%) during Southern Region (34.8%) has the highest percentage share in total freight followed by Western Region (31.8%) and Northern Region (27.0%) during WORLD TRAFFIC SCENARIO DURING APRIL 2010: The passenger and freight traffic flash reported by ACI for 2010, which reveal World Passenger Traffic registered a sudden drop in 2010 with the world airport reporting a 1.2 per cent decrease compared to Asia Pacific and Middle East Regions have equally increased substantially by 9.9 per cent in total passenger traffic. Fright growth figures are even more impressive, with Asia Pacific Region and Middle East topping result respectively at 29.3 and 17.7 per cent. 8.1 PASSENGER TRAFFIC : In 2010, total passenger traffic fell by 1.2 per cent compared to the same period in International passenger traffic was decreased by 4.9 percent and domestic passenger traffic was slightly up by 2.0 per cent during International and Domestic passenger traffic grew in Asia Pacific Region by 9.8 per cent and 10.2 per cent respectively during The first four months of 2010 showed world passenger traffic increased by 4.7 per cent with international traffic increased by 4.8 per cent and domestic passenger traffic increased by 4.6 per cent. Global passenger traffic marginally increased by 1.4 per cent during the year ending 2010 compared to year ending 2009 with International passenger traffic slightly decreased by 0.1 per cent and domestic passenger traffic increased by 2.7 percent. 8.2 FREIGHT TRAFFIC: Total freight handled worldwide in 2010 registered a strong growth by 20.7 per cent with international freight substantially increased by 27.3 per cent and domestic freight increased by 11.2 per cent. Asia Pacific market witnessed a robust growth both in international and domestic freight handling respectively by 37.0 per cent and 14.6 percent during the

13 month of The first four months of 2010 showed total freight traffic increased by 22.5 per cent with international freight increased by 30.4 per cent and domestic freight increased by 10.8 per cent. Total freight handled worldwide during the year ending 2010 increased by 5.3 percent compared to the year ending 2009 with international freight grew by 6.5 percent and domestic freight up by 4.0 percent. ******
