1 FNO Friday Night Operations Presenting Friday Night Operations Oakland ARTCC PILOT BRIEFING COAST LAKE DESERT INTRODUCTION Join ZOA, ZLC and ZLA as we staff up for one of the biggest FNOs of the year! Triple the traffic, triple the controllers, triple the airspace! Come along as our three ARTCCs staff up San Francisco (KSFO), Salt Lake City (KSLC) and Las Vegas (KLAS) for what will be an unforgettable evening of flying! DATE Friday August 17th 2018 oakartcc.org - Oakland ARTCC zlcartcc.com - Salt Lake City ARTCC laartcc.org - Los Angeles ARTCC Created By Antony Radley Ron Hennessy Milan Cruz SKYVECTOR.COM TIME 2359z z 1659PST PST AIRFIELDS KSFO KSLC KLAS TRAFFIC Scheduled IFR Local VFR
2 Letter to Airmen Plan your fuel accordingly This Letter to Airmen is designed to provide pilots flying within the Oakland ARTCC on Vatsim (ZOA ARTCC) with Traffic can backup very fast within the FNO timeframe, so please make sure to the recommended practices and procedures pilots can expect from air traffic controllers, as well as procedures pack some extra fuel just in case, +45mins is usually a safe bet. pilots are expected to know when flying within ZOA, that will help make their flight experience as realistic as possible. Charts are your friend Visit airnav.com for all the latest charts for arriving into San Franisico. 1 Only accept what you can perform If you are assigned a SID, STAR, or anything else complex that you can t perform, please 3 speak up. It is better we provide radar vectors than you flying a procedure incorrectly. Know your plane Make sure you know how to operate your aircraft before you attempt to fly it in complex airspace. Additionally, when given an instruction please execute it as quickly as possible. Any delay in executing an instruction, especially within one of our tight final sectors can cause you a large delay for resequencing or potentially cause a crash. 2 Do not leave the flight deck or pause If you need to leave, please ask first, do not just get up and walk away. Additionally, do not ever pause on the network unless given permission. 4 Unsure? Ask If you are unsure of what to do, or unclear about an instruction, something on a chart, anything really, please ask! ZOA controllers would love to help you.
3 12 13 Oakland ARTCC Airspace Map Frequencies and Callsigns CENTER Voice Callsign Oakland Center OAK_11_CTR: (South) OAK_44_CTR: (East) OAK_41_CTR: (North) KSFO Voice Callsign San Francisco... Tower Ground Delivery NorCal Approach/Depature Voice Callsign Norcal APP/DEP We will be using multiple sectors for this event, so please pay attention to what Delivery gives you as a depature frequency. Same as when Oakland Center gives you the approach freqency. Approach Specific Mistakes If you arrive on the DYAMD arrival and SFO is VMC, you can plan to fly the Quiet Bridge Visual for runway 28R. At some point before ARCHI, you will most likely get an instruction to join the lateral (course) only of the quiet bridge visual. We use this approach to provide lateral separation from 28L arrivals until visual separation can be applied. It is imperrative that you reference the quiet bridge approach plate in order to be able to navigate on the approach. If you are unsure of what to do, ask the controller or request an alternate approach. DO NOT join the ILS 28R route at ARCHI when cleared to join the quiet bridge.
4 26 13 Routes Preferred Routing Below is a list of preferred routing to and from SFO,SLC and LAS. Please be certain that you have one of these routes filed or you are able to accept reroutes, because if you do not have one of these routes, you may receive a reroute. Please note, these are weather dependent and always make sure to check-in with the latest airport information so you can get up to date information regarding arrivals and depatures. 5 26 Scenery 27 Common Arrival Mistakes * Not following lateral guidance on the STAR * Dialing in the wrong voice frequency given for Approach Many airports within our airspace have been significantly changed since the initial release of most flight simulation platforms. San Francisco has had gate changes, runway extensions, and significant taxiway changes, Oakland has had runway changes, San Jose has closed a runway and changed some taxiways, Sacramento International has open a new terminal and destroyed the old one, Fresno has widened a runway and changed some taxiways, and Reno has added an ILS system to a runway which is not available in any sim by default. As I am sure you can tell, the need to update your scenery is important. We at ZOA have compiled a list of scenery updates, both payware and freeware, and posted them on their own page which you can visit here. * Please be sure to follow the appropriate fixes as During busy events (when we have multiple sectors), depicted on the STAR. Proceeding direct to a fix further several frequencies may sound similar. Listen carefully down the arrival throws the arrival sequence, which for the hand off! means delays for you. NOTE: Check the STAR and the approach plates for * Not descending via the published altitude restrictions published frequencies. We will use the published Many pilots expect to be given hard altitudes to which to frequencies as much as possible. But, sometimes descend. Refernce the arrival chart for altitude restric- we have to combine or split sectors during the tions, your arrival chart will have all the information you event. So, preset what s published, but listen need for decent instructions. carefully in case you get something different. * Not descending with the published speed restrictions TIP: Use vpilot or xsquawkbox to list online controllers to The speed restrictions are there to keep the sequencing see if the published frequency is being used! stable. Be sure your aircraft is meeting those restrictions! Credit; Nick Christopher LA ARTCC Make sure to have fun Having fun is what it is all about, so prepare your flight.
