Next Meeting: Friday January 9, 7:30pm at Stoney Creek Airport Have a happy, healthy and most importantly, a SAFE 2015! The air is an extremely dangerous, jealous and exacting mistress. Once under the spell most lovers are faithful to the end, which is not always old age. Even those masters and princes of aerial fighting, the survivors of fifty mortal duels in the high air who have come scatheless through the War and all its perils, have returned again and again to their love and perished too often in some ordinary commonplace flight undertaken for pure amusement. Sir Winston Churchill, 'In The Air,' Thoughts and Adventures,
PAGE 2 Message from the Programs Director: January meeting: The January chapter meeting will take place on Friday, January 9 at 7:30 pm at the EAA65 clubhouse. As always, guests are welcome. Peter Meszaros and William Yaworski will have a slide show presentation detailing their recent trip to the Bahamas this past October in Peter s Cessna 172. Although Peter is an IFR rated pilot, the trip was always planned as a low and slow VFR flight, since the trip and not the destination, was the focal point of their adventure. As such, this presentation will be told from the pilot s and not the tourist s perspective. Tourists interested in a Bahamas holiday, should check out the travel websites. Pilots and flight enthusiasts who ve dreamed about such a flight in a general aviation plane will not want to miss this presentation. Peter and William will talk about the flight planning, route considerations, weather, equipment, customs, decision making, flight operations in the US vs. Bahamas vs. Canada, over-water flying and the challenges of dealing with the unexpected. Oh, and they ll also talk about the stops along the way, including the Bahamas. We will also view the latest Oshkosh chapter video magazine episode, which will include the latest news from Oshkosh headquarters as well as feature stories on the famed Hughes Spruce Goose, and formation aerobatics with a full scale aerobatic plane and a remote control scale model. Should be a fun night. Come and join us and bring a friend. Programs Director, Joe Brunski: Programs@EAA65.org Program Suggestions / Requests If you have suggestions for speakers, program topics, or if you would like to share your story or knowledge on matters of interest to our chapter, please let Joe Brunski know.
PAGE 3 Around the Club Peter Meszaros is seen here doing some overhaul work on his Quickie Q2. The Q2 is equipped with a 64hp Revmaster R-2100D engine, which is a converted 2L air cooled VW auto engine. Peter replaced the cylinders, pistons, rings and cylinder heads for about the same price as a single Lycoming cylinder! The Q2 incorporates Burt Rutan s tandem wing solution to the design issues of low drag, with fixed undercarriage and a useful centre of gravity range. This also places the payload close to the centre of gravity, incorporates the wheels without much drag penalty and gives safe stalling characteristics.
PAGE 4 HIGH SCHOOL AVIATION PROGRAM NEEDS OUR SUPPORT Bishop Tonnos High School in Ancaster is launching an aviation course this coming spring term and EAA Chapter 65 has been having discussions with the course instructor to explore ways that our chapter can support and enhance the program. The course will be taught by former EAA65 chapter member, John Ivkovic. John s been busy with a young family so he s not been active in the chapter during the past several years, but he is in the process of renewing his membership and plans to become active in the chapter once again John is a tech teacher with a broad background who teaches Transportation ( auto ), Construction and Technical Design. John is also a pilot who s long felt that an aviation themed course was needed for high school students who are interested in aviation. As such, he s been instrumental in getting this aviation course launched by the board of education. It will be the first such course in the Separate School Board, with less than a handful being offered in the province at the high school level. In selling the course to the Board of Education members, John pointed out that Canada is a world leader in aviation. Canada ranks 3 rd in the world in aircraft construction and Canada s aviation and aerospace sector is 5 th largest in the world in revenue even though our GDP is ranked 14 in the world. In other words, Canada is punching far above its weight class in this important industry. In spite of the importance of the aviation/aerospace industry to Canada s economy, the high schools have all but ignored this industry. Thus this course will show the students the job opportunities that exist for pilots, mechanics, technicians, engineers, air traffic controllers to name just a few. He is currently in the process of being an accredited radio operator certificate - aeronautical examiner, the first high school in the country to offer this to high school students. Now the hard work begins. With a limited budget, and no existing course materials, John is reaching out to the aviation industry and colleges for support to maximize the learning experience for his students. EAA Chapter 65 is planning to offer Young Eagles flights to the students, and to welcome them to our chapter to see General Aviation first hand and to speak to our members who are or who have been employed in the aviation sector. Our members include private, commercial and military pilots, engineers, mechanics, home builders and flight instructors and their first hand knowledge will go a long way to helping students understand these career opportunities. John has grand plans for the program and hopes to one day secure an airplane project for the students to work on, but he also needs more basic items to get the course off the ground. Thus, John is appealing to our chapter members for donations of aviation materials for the classroom. Things like instruments, aircraft panels, engines (working or not), books, and tools are badly needed. The school will get an appraisal for all donations and issue a tax receipt for the gift. As well, the donors names will be added to a permanent plaque that will be prominently displayed in the school. If you are interested in donating an item, contact John Ivkovic ivkovicj@fc.hwcdsb.ca phone at Aviation education is one of the core values of our organization and the chapter executive is pleased to be able to support this important program.
PAGE 5 We are currently in the process of organizing and centralizing all record keeping and documentation of the EAA Chapter 65. Our club and its history is 55 years old. Most of the original members are gone and many memories have already been lost. Photographs and News Articles are fading as much as the memories themselves. We would like to gather together any photographs, documents and articles making up the history of the club and file them away in an organized system. We would also like to digitize everything and store it away electronically along with backup copies. If you have anything that chronicles EAA Chapter 65 in any way, we would appreciate if you could pass it along to the club, or at very least, lend it for the purpose of scanning and duplication. Please take the opportunity to save the history of the club and bring the materials to one of the next few meetings. If that isn t convenient, please pass it along to someone who can attend. You may also elect to send electronic copies via to Secretary@EAA65.org George Bell is anxious to show off his newly finished 3-Blade Propeller Looks beautiful! We re anxious to see it pushing you through the air, George! Can you guess where this island is?
