2 1 Dear World Indoor Cricket Federation participants I would like to extend a warm outh African welcome to all players, managers and officials taking part in the Indoor Cricket Masters World eries The tournament will take place in the Gauteng province which can be considered as the sporting hub of the African continent. outh Africa has played host to a few major sporting world cups in the past, the largest three being the occer, Cricket and Rugby world cups, so we have developed a reputation for hosting fantastic international Indoor Cricket events. Gauteng Province is situated a stone throw away from some of the most spectacular tourist destinations we have, so visiting some of these before or after the tournament would be an experience not to be missed. There are a host of game reserves within a 3 hour drive where you could get a true experience of the famous African Bushveld. There you would be able to see the big 5 which are the Lion, Elephant, Rhino, Leopard and Buffalo, in their natural environment. We will also be situated two hours away from un City, outh Africa s version of Las Vegas. un City is best known for playing host to the $2 mill golf tournament, five star hotels and casino s all nestled into the Pilandsberg game reserve where you will also find the Big 5. Indoor Cricket or Action Cricket as it is better known in outh Africa is one of the fastest growing sports in this sport mad country. It has shown phenomenal growth annually over the past twenty years, and now boast massive participation throughout the country. We are hoping for a huge public interest and are expecting the host arena to be packed with spectators for the duration of the tournament. We will also be filming the final games of tournament. To end off I would personally like to congratulate each one of you for being selected to represent your country in Indoor Cricket Masters World eries I am fully aware of the amount of training required to get to this level, and just for that you deserve a huge pat on the back. Well done! The hard work is now almost over, but remember to enjoy this experience as these occasions are usually once in a lifetime. In specified age Internationals, proof of age MUT be supplied before the event and, if necessary, upon demand by the WICF or member of the organizing committee. Dispensation to eligibility criteria may be considered in special cases by the WICF Executive following written submissions being made to the WICF 60 DAY prior. Decisions on eligibility made by the WICF shall be final and binding. Countries should ensure that all players, coaches and officials have access to understand the contents of this document. Tournament entry fees have been set at AU$ per team (includes players and officials). Payments are nonrefundable and must be made in accordance with the payment terms and timetable set out in this booklet. The economy has since diversified, with more sophisticated sectors such as finance and manufacturing setting up shop, and gold mining is no longer the mainstay. The province is essentially one big city, with 97% of its population living in urban centres.

11 THE GAUTENG PROVINCE 10 The urban area extends virtually uninterrupted east and west of Johannesburg through a number of towns: Roodepoort and Krugersdorp on the west and Germiston, prings, Boksburg and Benoni on the east. To the north is Pretoria, the capital of outh Africa, whose southern suburbs are slowly merging with the Johannesburg sprawl. The city is dominated by government services and the foreign diplomatic corps. It's also known for its colourful gardens, shrubs and trees, particularly beautiful in spring when some jacaranda trees envelop the avenues in mauve. Lions - Krugersdorp Game Reserve Johannesburg is the capital, and by far the biggest city in outh Africa - and Africa as a whole. Also known as Jo'burg or Jozi, it is often compared to Los Angeles, with its similar urban sprawl linked by huge highway interchanges. Johannesburg is a single municipality that covers over square kilometres. ydney's central municipality, by comparison, covers square kilometres. It's been calculated that if a resident of the southern-most area, Orange Farm, were to walk northwards to the inner city, the journey would take three days. Mine-dumps and headgear remain symbols of Johannesburg's rich past, while modern architecture abuts fine examples of 19th-century engineering. Gleaming skyscrapers contrast with Indian bazaars and African medicine shops, and the busy streets throng with fruit sellers and street vendors. 12 1 GAUTENG OUTH AFRICA THE LAND AND IT PEOPLE With a total area of square kilometres, Gauteng is slightly smaller than the U state of New Jersey. While it's the country's smallest province, it has the second-largest population after KwaZulu-Natal, and by far the highest population density people per square kilometre. (The Northern Cape, by comparison, has an average of three people per square kilometre.) The people of Gauteng have the highest per capita income level in the country. The province blends cultures, colours and first and third-world traditions in a spirited mix, flavoured by a number of foreign influences. The world's languages can be heard on the streets and in offices, from English to Mandarin, wahili, French, German and more. The province has the most important educational and health centres in the country. Pretoria boasts the largest residential university in outh Africa, Rhino at the Lion & Rhino reserve the University of Pretoria, and what is believed to be the largest correspondence university in the world, the University of outh Africa, or Unisa. More than 60% of outh Africa's research and development takes place in Gauteng, which has 41% of the country's core biotechnology companies. It's also home to leading research institutions such as the Council for cientific and Industrial Research, the Agricultural Research Council and the Onderstepoort Veterinary Institute. Maropeng - Cradle of Humankind Although the province is highly urbanised and industrialised, it contains wetlands of international importance, such as Blesbokspruit near prings. And it's home to the Cradle of Humankind, one of outh Africa's seven Unesco World Heritage sites. The region of terkfontein, wartkrans, Kromdraai and environs has one of the world's richest concentrations of hominid fossils, evidence of human evolution over the last 3.5-million years. The Highveld is said to offer one of the world best climates: summer days are warm and wind-free (relatively) and winter days are crisp and clear. 13 JOHANNEBURG - "CITY OF GOLD" Everyone is on the move - doing business, making money, jogging, going to gym, cycling, partying till late, eating out, and attending shows, movies and exhibitions. If you're a city person, you will love Johannesburg. The older part of the city is developing an interesting character - in parts somewhat neglected and a bit scary, and in parts humming with a new kind of vibrancy. It is the de facto capital of Africa - in the centre of Johannesburg, you will find people from all over the continent, and in some pretty unusual and out-of-the way venues, you can sample their cuisine and jive to their music - not for the faint of heart, though. 12 The northern suburbs radiate a sense of opulence and prosperity. The many shopping malls carry a vast range of high quality consumer goods, including many luxuries, and the hundreds of restaurants and coffee shops offer a wide range of fashionable cuisines. There really is a lot to do in Johannesburg. You could go on an escorted tour of oweto, which is not the voyeuristic horror it sounds like. It's actually a mind-expanding experience as you see not only how other people live, but also how this resilient community contributed to outh Africa's liberation struggle. Also in the city centre is the Civic Theatre, and the Newtown Cultural Project, with Museum Africa. But the head offices of major corporations, and the majority of businesses, have moved out to the northern suburbs and to Midrand - the burgeoning industrial, commercial, semi-agricultural and residential area halfway between Johannesburg and Pretoria. Gold Bar at Gold Reef City A visit to Gold Reef City is a fun day out with amusement rides and a reconstructed mining village, but it is a lot more authentic than most theme parks. The trip down a gold mine is a real eye-opener, but that's nothing compared to the paradigm shift many people may experience in visiting the Apartheid Museum, also at Gold Reef City. You could do a walking tour to look at some lovely old buildings, or just park off at a coffee shop in a mall and watch the world and its wallet walk past. DID YOU KNOW? It might be the smallest of the nine provinces, but is also the wealthiest, and entertainment is high on its list of priorities people here work and play hard. The highveld is a heady mix of energy, diversity and enviable weather and activities and an eclectic nightlife are anything but hard to find. In Johannesburg, Gold Reef City, numerous markets, oweto, theatres and restaurants provide a constant source of distraction, whilst the Magaliesberg, un City, Pretoria, and the Pilanesberg are all on your doorstep. oweto Township oweto oweto is the largest township in the country, and is synonymous with anti-apartheid resistance. 15 EXPLORING JOHANNEBURG 14 Cradle of Humankind terkfontein Cave is some 50 kilometres north-west of Johannesburg, in the Cradle of Humankind where around 40 percent of all hominid fossils have been excavated. A must see. Website: Apartheid Museum A visit to Johannesburg's Apartheid Museum is a moving experience -- you almost feel you were there among the toyi-toying demonstrators facing down the police. Website: Origins Centre Many of the exhibits bring to life the heritage of the Bushmen or an, whose DNA contains the earliest genetic print, linking them to the Homo sapiens who lived years ago. Website: Maropeng This spectacular building, constructed to resemble an ancient burial mound, offers an array of exhibitions which aim to teach visitors more about the beginning of the world, what it means to be human, and how humans moved out of Africa. It also boasts an original fossil display. It is in the Cradle of Humankind, 50 kilometres north-west of Jo'burg. Website: Johannesburg Art Gallery The continent's most significant gallery spans international artists such as Rodin, Picasso and Henry Moore, to outh Africans such as Gerard ekoto, Walter Battiss and Jacobus Hendrik Pierneef. Rosebank Rooftop Flea Market The Rooftop Market is regarded by many as outh Africa's best flea market. It has over 70 stalls offer clothing, ceramics, art and craft objects, African art and collectibles. The rooftop also boasts a food court and deli to curb the hunger while you shop. Website: Johannesburg Zoo Opened in 1904, the zoo is now a sprawling 54ha site housing creatures - lions, tigers, elephants, gorillas, chimpanzees, sable antelope, bat-eared foxes, polar bears and much more in all some 333 different species. Website: Johannesburg Zoo Lion Park This expansive park is home to an impressive assortment of animals, including a large population of rare white lions, wild dogs, spotted hyenas, the rare black leopards, cheetahs and numerous antelope. Website: Walter isulu National Botanical Gardens A magnificent garden of 300ha of landscaped and natural veld areas, planted with only indigenous trees, plus species of indigenous flowering plants and shrubs. 16 5Gold Reef City Theme Park Take a trip down an old Johannesburg gold mine, and visit a recreated turn-of-the-century gold rush town. Have fun on the rides too. Website: Wonder Cave This is the third largest cave chamber in outh Africa a wonderland of rock twirls and ice-cream cone rocks 1,5 million years old. The cave is 125m long and 154m wide, filled with up to 14 different stalactite and stalagmite formations, 85 percent of which are still growing. Website: outh African Breweries Museum Beer is a drink that is loved worldwide and outh African Breweries is one of the largest brewing groups in the world. Late-night shopping is a unique feature and clothing, jewellery and African curios are the most popular products. There is plenty of entertainment, including cinemas, a theatre as well as a casino. From designer boutiques and world-class cuisine to local curios and cozy coffee shops, this square encapsulates a lifestyle that takes good taste to new levels.
