4 Medical Tourism Overview Medical tourism (also called medical travel, health tourism or global healthcare) is a term created for travel across international borders to obtain health care. Medical tourism is perceived to be one of the most rapidly growing industries in the world, aided by ease of travel and globalization. As per the WHO (World Health Organization), the expected spend on health tourism in the year 2010 will be in the range of 100 billion dollars. The regional (Middle East, G.C.C. and Africa) market share is estimated to be more than 8% of this total expenditure. 6 Health Tourism development agreement Thomas Cook Egypt, together with the Egyptian Ministry of Health & Population and the Specialized Medical Centers in Egypt have signed an exclusive agreement to develop the Health Tourism in Egypt. On 30 October 2008 Mr. Mounir Kamal, Managing Director Thomas Cook Egypt & Middle East, Dr. Hamdy El Sayed, Chief of Doctors Syndicate and Dr. Mohamed Mostafa, Head of Specialized Medical Centers signed the agreement to develop the Health Tourism in Egypt at a press conference at the J.W Marriott hotel organized by Thomas Cook Egypt. The press conference was followed a cocktail reception to celebrate the event. The agreement aims to establish Egypt as one of the most important countries in providing Health Tourism in Africa and the Middle East. The foreign currency earned through Health Tourism assist the Egyptian Ministry of Health & Population in enhancing the hospitals and specialized Medical Centers in Egypt. The press conference was covered by local and international press and television channels like O.T.V and T.V 5. 04

8 ZANZIBAR Zanzibar is an archipelago made up of the islands of Zanzibar and Pemba and several islets. It is part of the East African Republic of Tanzania and lies some 40 kms off the mainland coast. It is characterized by beautiful sandy beaches, with fringing coral reefs, and the old historical city known as Stone Town, probably one of the only functioning ancient towns in East Africa. Getting Around Getting around is quite easy. It is possible to walk through Stone Town as most of the alleys are barely wide enough for a bicycle to negotiate. Taxis are available for journeys further a field and a network of small vans, called dalla-dalls, can take visitors to all the small villages and beaches on the island. Taxis can be booked through hotels, but these will be more expensive than those hailed on the street as is the case in Egypt. Things to Do Take a Spice Tour which will take you round the island, showing you how some of the spices are produced and giving you a chance to sample some of the items. Buy Textiles, handmade jewellery, spices, wooden carvings, knick-knacks, etc, are all good buys. Do take care if buying saffron as many of the vendors sell a fake variety. You can tell if its not the real thing if it has a waxy, shredded, sticky red look about it. Food and Drink There are many places to eat serving a variety of food for all prices and for all tastes. As for drink, although prdominently a Moslem community, small bars can be found everywhere in Zanzibar. Their ginger beer, tangawizi, sugar cane juice and coconut milk are all good. Landmarks to Visit Beit el-ajaib, the House of Wonders, is home to the Zanzibar National Museum of History and Culture and one of the largest buildings on the island. It was built as a ceremonial palace for the sultans and later used as the headquarters for Tanzania s ruling party before becoming a museum. Beit el-sahel, the Palace Museum, is located just north of the House of Wonders. This palace served as the sultan s residence up until 1964 when the dynasty was overthrown. Now it s a museum devoted to the era of the Zanzibar sultanate. Jozani Forest has excellent nature trails featuring some very large and exotic trees. Also on view are some of the Red Colobus Monkeys. Although nearly extinct, these playful and curious animals will pose for a picture and keep you entertained. The House of Wonders and the Arab Fort in Stone Town are worth visiting on a walking tour with a local guide who will give you a history lesson as you tour the town. The market in Stone Town is definitely worth a visit. A vibrant, openair market selling all sorts of produce. Even if you don t want to buy anything, the spectacle is worth it. Visit the Save Market. Quite a salutary experience. You ll be able to view the holding chambers where the slaves were kept in small, dungeonlike cells. Forodhani Gardens is a must to visit. Food stalls and the curio market all tempt you to buy. This is where you can purchase souvenirs and gifts to take home, but don t forget to haggle and bargain. For those who want to spend time by the sea, the East Beaches are popular, with brilliant, white sand and warm, deep blue water. Go scuba diving and snorkeling here. Swim with the dolphins, take a ride on a dhow (a local boat) or simply enjoy the water and the beach on the north west coast of the island whether the tide is in or out. There are many beach bars and restaurants serving everything from pizzas to hot, local curries. Money The currency is the Tanzanian Shilling (TSH). On the beaches, Euros and US$ are accepted. Buy food with TSH but use Euros and/or US$ to buy souvenirs and other goods. There are ATM machines on the island but currently all located in Stone Town. Stores do not generally accept credit cards so take cash and/or travelers cheques and don t rely on bank cards. The Mangapwani Caves are located about 20 kms north of the town along the coast. The first cave is large, with a freshwater pool, originally supposedly used for the slave trade. 15 SOMA BAY Soma Bay, one of the most beautiful peninsulas in Egypt, is located about 45 kms from Hurghada Airport on the Red Sea. The resort boasts some of the most attractive beaches along the Red Sea with panoramic views of the dramatic desert mountains and the azure colour of the tranquil water. Visitors to the area often ask where the name comes from. There is no definitive answer, only theories. Admiralty charts refer to the place as Ras Abou Soma, the Arabic name, whereas developers recently coined the name Soma Bay. The translation of Ras is cape, headland or bay, and abou means father. This all makes sense but what about Soma? Soma is a plant, grown in the Indian subcontinent, which is reputed to have hallucinogenic properties. The plant gained wider recognition in the 1930s with the publishing of a novel entitled Brave New World. The book describes a futuristic society whose members are kept in a state of controlled well-being through the administration of Soma, from cradle to death. So what is the connection between this plant and Ras Abou Soma? One theory is that there is another bay not far from Ras Abou Soma which, curiously enough, is called Sahl Hashish literally the coast, or bay, of Hashish. So the theory goes that many decades ago this general coastline was the gateway by which drugs entered into Egypt from abroad. Another theory is that the natural beauty of Soma Bay instills in the visitor a sense of peace and tranquility akin to the effects of the Soma plant. A Brave New World derived from nature, not the artificial consumption of a hallucinogenic drug! Thirdly, the fact that the black sand of Safaga found on the shores of Soma Bay originates from sea grass and algae and is known to have beneficial effects on both body and mind is yet another theory. It s a marine version of the Soma plant in a more benign form. Lastly, legend tells us that many, many years ago, a person named Sheikh Abou Soma lived on the peninsula and that he was so taken with its beauty that he was buried at the very tip of the peninsula which then took his name. So, an interesting question and one can choose the version one prefers. Today, Soma Bay is a perfect destination for a golf holiday featuring one of Egypt s most spectacular golf courses an 18 hole championship course names The Cascades and designed by golfing legend Gary Player. To complement one s stay, there is also one of the Leading Spas of the World, Les Thermes Marins des Cascades, to aid total rejuvenation after a hard day s game of golf. The Bay is also ideal for a variety of watersport activities to please both amateur and veteran adventurers alike. Some of the most superb scuba diving and snorkelling can be found at Somas Bay. At the marina, called Marsa Tubya, yachts can be chartered for diving trips or for cruising. If one wishes to get away from the sea and take in some culture, Luxor is only 240 kms away by road, and same day excursions to the Valley of the Kings, Queen Hatshepsut s Temple and the Colossi of Memnon on the West Bank and Karnak and Luxor Temples on the East Bank can be arranged. The Cascades is Soma Bay s Golf and Country Club providing a sporting and social venue for everybody. The Gary Player course is one of the first major courses in Egypt, certainly on the western Red Sea coast, and is also the first Championship Course in the Middle East to be designed by one of the big three Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer. 17 CHRISTMAS ACTIVITIES FOR CHILDREN Every year, many millions of people celebrate Christmas around the world, and Egypt is no exception. There are lots of ways in which kids can become part of the preparations and some of these are outlined here. Tree Decoration Buy a small tree for the kids to dress in their own style. They can make their own decorations using all sorts of household items such as cardboard and string which can be painted or covered in material. Christmas Cooking Most children love to potter about in the kitchen. Get them to help with making the mince pies, Christmas cake and the plum pudding, all of which can be made well in advance. Cards and Presents The tradition of sending Christmas cards began in Since then, we have been exchanging greeting cards every year. If you have kept last year s cards, kids can make new ones and, if really adventurous, can even make the envelopes. Many gifts can be made by children. A great place to get ideas is usually from the kids school teacher and, of course, their parents.
