2 Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests, please accept my warm greets as a tradition of the population of our province; It is for me a great pleasure to be here to present the profile of Sofala province, its economic potentialities and some major business opportunities taking into account the province s strategic location, in the centre of Mozambique; Sofala is a heart of the country and the gateway to SADC countries. 2

5 PROVINCE`s CLIMATE The climate is tropical humid with annual average temperature that varies between 24º and 25ºC and is characterized by two seasons: Rainy and warm in November and April, Fresh and dry from May to October. Rainfall is varied, with an average that ranges between and mm per annum. 5
6 WATER RESOURCES 5 major river basins namely: Zambeze; Púnguè; U r e m a L a k e Búzi; Save; Lake Urema Underground waters in Conduè 6
7 POTENCIALITIES OF THE PROVINCE Existence of socioeconomic infrastructures; Agriculture and livestock potential; Tourism potential : Fauna, beaches, culture; Buffalos Reserve 330 km of Indian Ocean coast; Fhishing and aquaculture potential; Fauna PNG elephants Forestry potential; Potential in minerals and hydrocarbons. 7
8 Sena railway line The province benefits from Beira Development Corridor, with a railway system (Sena and Machipanda railway line) and a road network (N1 and N6). A Pipeline linking Beira city to Zimbabwe. INFRASTRUTURES Beira International Airport There is a Port and International Airport, in Beira city, which guarantee rapid worldwide connection. The port has an installed capacity of 7.5 million tonners per annum; an oceanic fuel terminal and a coal terminal under construction Port of Beira 8
9 The tourism sector is one of major cinegetic attractions of Sofala; there is occurrence of rare forest and fauna species. Sofala has two important reserves, namely Gorongosa National Park and buffalo Reserve in Marromeu. 9
10 FISHERIES The coast of Sofala province is an important reserve of fishery resources in the country, covers the coastal districts of Machanga, Búzi, Beira, Dondo, Cheringoma, Muanza and Marromeu; The fishery potential is valued at about tones/annum of fishery products, notably: Shrimps T Fine shrimp 700 T Fish T Crab T Artisanal fishing Crab 10
11 AQUACULTURE Favorable conditions for shrimp, taínha and mangrove crab farming; Na area of about ha is available for aquaculture There is an aquaculture undertaking with a concession of 500 hectares in the area of Nhangau in the city of Beira. 11
12 MINERAL RESOURCES Natural gas/ Hydrocarbonets Fluorite and Calcite in Marínguè Aluvional gold in Gorongosa, Marínguè and Nhamatanda Plaster (Gesso) in Machanga Guano in Búzi, Chibabava, and Cheringoma Decoration and ornamental stones in Gorongosa, Marínguè and Chemba Limestone in Búzi, Cheringoma, Chibabava and Muanza Construction stones and sands in Nhamatanda, Dondo and Beira Sofala, : Rumo ao Desenvolvimento 12
13 FORESTRY RESOURCES The forests cover an area of ha of which ha are productive forests. The province has an anual explotation potential that varies from m³ (minimum) to m³ (maximum) of high value wood per annuam. 13
14 WILDLIFE RESOURCES Enormous potential comprising a wide variety of species, including rare species, migratory and resident; They constitute a source of tourism development (game and viewing) specially in the Gorongosa National Park covering some km². National Reserve of Marromeu km² (the largest buffalo reserve in Mozambique), integrating the Humids Soils with International Importance on Zambeze Delta 68.8 km². Sofala, : Towards Development 14
