2 Message of the Director General Picture DG On behalf of the Management and Staff of Tanzania Trade Development Authority, It is my pleasure to present the first edition of the Tanzania Trade Directory. The directory offers detailed information on a wide range of Tanzanian manufacturers, producers and their products; also it provides foreign Business/ Companies with an ample visualization of the business opportunities available in Tanzania. So that in order to become a world class focal point centrally positioned to support national economic excellence through research and development, product and market development, promotion of Tanzanian goods and services, SME s Development, Advisory services on business competitiveness and business information and Trade information. The directory is therefore a showcase of products that Tanzania produces. Printed and CD copies of the directory will be distributed extensively to Chambers of Cmmerce and Industry, Trade Promotion Organization, Tanzania diplomatic missions abroad, leading trade/ buying houses, foreign mission in Tanzania, Business support organization, NGO s and International Agency in Tanzania I also call upon the business community to use this directory as a tool to showcase their products so that they can increase their visibility and capture new business opportunities. 4 CORPORATE PROFILE TanTrade Fostering Business 1.0 Background The Tanzania Trade Development Authority (TanTrade) was established by the Tanzania Trade Development Authority Act No. 4 of Her establishment followed a repeal of the Act of Parliament No 15 of 1973 that established the Board of Internal Trade (BIT) and the Act of Parliament No. 5 of 1978 that established the Board of External Trade (BET). TanTrade is a statutory organ vested with regulatory, executive, advisory and consultative power of developing and promoting trade in Tanzania. Thus, TanTrade activities are designed to promote a strong domestic trading culture, capability and its linkage to the foreign trade. 1.1 Vision To become a world class focal point centrally positioned to support national economic excellence 1.2 Mission To enhance Tanzania s economic performance through trade development and promotion of goods and services for both local and foreign markets 1.3 TanTrade Core Values TanTrade believes on the following: We observe professional ethics and standards in developing and delivering services to our clients. We cultivate teamwork spirit where every individual share his/her expertise and experience. We uphold the principle of integrity, good governance and accountability; and we do not encourage corruption and discrimination of any kind in our service delivery. We understand that TanTrade is part of the community and therefore we value our active participation and contribution to community through Corporate Social Responsibility. 4

5 2.0 TanTrade Offers the Following Services: i) Trade Information Services TanTrade collects, processes, stores and disseminates trade related information and data to the business community and other stakeholders; and houses the World Trade Organization Reference Centre and World Trade Point Federation which facilitate the availability of integrated trade information to the clients. ii) Capacity Building& SMEs Development TanTrade conducts Capacity Building Programmes through trainings, business clinics, and mentoring, coaching and advisory services to the business community and special attention to SMEs in order to enhance their ability to produce and compete locally and internationally. iii) Promotion of Tanzanian Produce TanTrade foster better market penetration for Tanzania s goods and services at domestic, regional and international markets by promoting through participation to the international trade fairs, expos, trade missions and organizing our International Trade Fair (DITF), Uhuru Festivals and specialized sector exhibitions such as Honey Exhibition and Commercial Crafts Exhibitions. iv) Research & Development TanTrade undertakes various trade related research and development projects in order to determine market characteristics, trends, potentials, customer needs and obtain any other information. Research findings help the business community and other stakeholders to make informed decisions. v) Branding of Tanzania Goods and Services TanTrade aims to introduce brand identity and slogan of Tanzanian produce in order to promote them locally and internationally. Once the process is launched, TanTrade will encourage companies to participate in the branding process. 5

6 vi) Domestic Market Development TanTrade is responsible for coordination and development of domestic markets by ensuring that local trade is integrated with international. Development of domestic market is done through developing and adopting products by collaborating with sector associations and other stakeholders in identifying and advising the business community on ways of overcoming bottlenecks in the value chain and promote value addition. On other hand it entails development of market systems by ensuring sufficient and smooth operation of market centers. vii) Regulation of All Trade Fairs TanTrade as required by law ensures quality and standard of exhibition industry by regulating the staging of all trade fairs, exhibitions, expositions, solos etc organized by various companies or Institutions in the Tanzania. viii) Trade Policy and Facilitation TanTrade advises the Government on matters relating to the formulation, development, supervision and implementation of trade policies, other related service and strategies. Also advises the Government on the integration of multilateral trade rules at the bilateral, regional and multilateral levels.
