1 DRIVE ZAMBIA: NORTH + SOUTH KAFUE NATIONAL PARK BY PRIVATE 4X4 VEHICLE Kafue National Park is one of Zambia s primary national parks along with South Luangwa and Lower Zambezi. It is also the country s oldest and largest, twice the size of South Luangwa in the east, and divided into northern and southern sectors by the Great West Road. Each sector can be visited independently, but this ten-day loop, beginning in Livingstone and ending in Lusaka or in reverse allows you to see Kafue National Park in its entirety. Southern Kafue s highlights are stretches of the Kafue River which are perfect for canoeing as well as the vast Itezhi Tezhi Lake. Possible wildlife sightings in the south are elephant, lion, leopard, cheetah and wild dog; while further south, in the direction of Nanzhila Plains, the beautiful sable antelope might be seen. The diversity of habitat makes Kafue National Park one of the best locations in Africa for birding. A luxury safari is not just about how much it costs. It is also about how you prefer to spend your precious leisure time. It s about the pursuit of authenticity (even if that means enduring a few bumpy roads), and an adventure which is defined less by adrenalin-rush and more by the mystique of remote locations and special events or activities. DAY 1 LIVINGTONE Arrive Livingstone, gateway to Victoria Falls. You are met upon arrival and driven to your accommodation. There are several options of accommodation available. If you arrive early enough in the day you will visit Victoria Falls. You are on a bed and breakfast basis at your lodge. All activities are additional and can be arranged in advance per your request. 2 DAY 2 DAY 3 LIVINGSTONE Free day to explore Livingstone town and Victoria Falls. If you travel late in the dry season (August December) then there is more water flow over the falls on the Zimbabwe side. With the purchase of a Zimbabwe visa or request a univisa upon arrival in Zambia which permits a visit to Zimbabwe - it is simple to cross into Zimbabwe for a half day or even for an overnight to see the falls from this different perspective. You may also like the idea of taking tea at the old railway hotel on the Zim side, the Victoria Falls Hotel, or shopping for quality handicrafts at the Elephant Walk, Victoria Falls town. >> Everyone has their own definition of adventure. If you define adventure by adrenalin-rush, then Livingstone is THE place in your Zambian itinerary to pursue it. You will not find bungee jumping; zip lining; bridge swinging; swimming under Victoria Falls or in the Devil s Pool a natural swimming hole on the very precipice of the falls or white river rafting, considered among the best in the world, anywhere else in Zambia. Bungee jumping is a year-round activity and can be arranged spontaneously. Swimming under the falls and in Devil s Pool are excursions offered during low water season, typically August through January, and can be popular so book ahead. You can raft all year round too, but the lower the water in the Zambezi the more dramatic the rafting. We advise booking the rafting well enough in advance. 3 DAY 4 KAFUE NATIONAL PARK: NANZHILA Twice daily shared game activities at Nanzhila. A typical day at Nanzila includes a morning game drive; visits to private hides around the camp; an afternoon guided bush walk followed by a night drive. Birding is particularly rewarding in the Nanzhila area where the Black-cheeked lovebird is endemic. DAY 5 DAY 6 DAY 7 KAFUE NATIONAL PARK: NANZHILA KaingU Safari Lodge is a 4-hour drive from Nanzhila. You are in wildlife areas for the entire drive. KaingU Lodge occupies one of the prettiest spots of all Kafue accommodation along the Kafue River. The river here is a scenic stretch of channels, islands and large boulders. Kafue National Park is opposite the lodge, a 10 min boat ride away, where vehicles are kept for game viewing. The lodge itself was built over time with care and an eye for comfort and detail. Activities include game drives; guided walks; canoeing; bird hides for Meyer s parrots and bee eaters; a hippo hide; and sleep outs on a nearby island in Tonga Basket tree houses; and community schoo visits. 4 DAY 8 DAY 9 KAFUE NATIONAL PARK: MUSEKESE Today you continue your journey from South Kafue to North Kafue. We follow the new road which runs up the spine of the southern sector for 180 kms, emerging near the eastwest highway which dissects the park in half. Driving time is an estimated four hours depending on stops and wildlife sightings. Your accommodation tonight is your final camp of this Kafue National Park safari. Named Musekese for a tree which grows abundantly in Kafue, it offers spacious wooden platforms, enclosed with natural grasses and open on one side a, furnished with two beds and comfortable mattresses, En-suite bathrooms have flush toilets and are also open on one side. Showers are bucket-hung, with hot water delivered when you require it. Musekese is small, with just four rooms, all with superb views over the lagoon in front of camp. KAFUE NATIONAL PARK: MUSEKESE Although walking safaris are Musekese s main focus, the camp is well equipped with a boat for relaxing cruises along the Kafue and Lufupa Rivers where wildlife spotting is good. There is some world class fishing here. There are also viewing blinds and hides at three diverse sites, well hidden and situated in game rich and scenically attractive areas. 5 DAY 10 LUSAKA ~or~ INTERNATIONAL DEPARTURE Today s road transfer to Lusaka takes five+ hours. For those departing tomorrow, you are transferred to Mama Tembo Cheza, MTTZ s private cottage on a five acre wooded plot in a quiet, rural area of Lusaka, a minute drive from the airport. The one-bedroom cottage is fully furnished with a queen bed and mosquito net.
