Our Itinerary & the Geography of Moccoco Our itinerary goes beyond the traditional Imperial Cities or Land & Sea tours! Arrive in the city of Tangier in Mediterranean Morocco. Head south to visit Meknes and Fes in the Middle Atlas region. Continue south to Merzouga to experience the desert dunes of Saharan Morocco. Stay in Ouarzazate the Hollywood of Morocco also part of the Saharan area. In the Anti Atlas region, relax in Taroudant off the path of most tourists. Then, enjoy lunch in the ocean-side town of Agadir and stay in another ocean-side tour of Essaouria, both along the South Atlantic Coast. Head inland to end the trip in Marrakech the jewel of the High Atlas region! In addition, the itinerary includes time in some out of the way small towns and villages! The obvious question is Why not visit Casablanca? Frankly, it s one of the country s least interesting cities. There is a marvelous mosque, a nice church and an interesting synagogue (structures that exist in other cities on the itinerary) but, that s about it. The name is famous only because of the movie Casablanca, which was filmed entirely in Los Angeles. 2

Itinerary Day 0 (Thu, Sep 13) Depart U.S. Enjoy the option to arrive a day or two early to adjust to the new time zone, or depart the U.S. today in order to arrive in Tangier, Morocco (Airport Code: TNG) by the late afternoon of Fri, Sep. 14 th. Day 1 (Fri, Sep 14) Arrival in Tangier Upon arrival at Tangier airport, be met by a local for a private transfer to our hotel. Located on the Maghreb coast at the western entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar, Tangier sits on the North African coast where the Mediterranean Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean. Tangier has a very rich history, due to the historical presence of many civilizations and cultures starting from before the 5th century B.C. From being a strategic Berber town, then a Phoenician trading center to the independence era around the 1950s, Tangier was a nexus for many cultures. In 1923, it was considered as having international status by foreign colonial powers, and became a destination for many European and American diplomats, spies, writers and businessmen. Settle into the hotel and meet others in the group to start this extraordinary journey with a Welcome Dinner. Day 2 (Sat, Sep 15) (B, L) Tangier Chefchaouen After breakfast, start the exploration of Morocco with the old city of Tangier, from the main gate of the Kasbah through what used to be the Royal part of the fortified city. Stop inside the 17 th -century palace, which is now the Kasbah museum. From here, stroll down the hillside on which the historical Tangier has been built ever since the time of the Phoenicians. Pass the tomb of Ibn Batouta, the famous 14 th - century Moroccan traveler, known as the Moroccan Marco Polo. Next, stop a Koran School located in the most ancient part of the medina. Go inside a traditional bakery and taste homemade bread. See the furnace that heats the public steam bath and learn the role these traditional locations play in the social life of each quarter. This is the part of town that inspired many artists in the past such as Delacroix and Matisse for their authenticity and colorful everyday life. Continue to the lower part of the old Kasbah, built in 1471 by the Portuguese. Emerge onto the Grand Socco square and stroll to St. Andrews Church, a fascinating English church which merges Moorish architecture with Christian features. 3

After lunch in Tangier, board our private coach to head to Chefchaouen, founded as a small fortress in 1471 in the Rif Mountains to fight the Portuguese invasions of northern Morocco. After the Spanish Reconquista of medieval times, many moriscos (former Muslims who converted or were coerced into converting to Christianity, after Spain finally outlawed the open practice of Islam) and Jews settled here along with the local Ghomara tribes of the region. Take free time this evening to stroll through this charming town, stop in a café to hear live music, grab a bite of dinner, or relax at our lovely hotel. Day 3 (Sun, Sep 16) (B, L) Chefchaouen Volubilis - Fes After breakfast, take a guided walking tour of the this delightful town, famous for its shady valleys, old medina, white houses with blue doors and tiled roofs. The local markets come to life with traditionally dressed locals and colorful shops with beautifully displayed crafts. Local charm is evident through by its preservation of the MuslimAndalusian arts & traditions. After lunch, drive through the beautiful countryside to the archaeological site of Volubilis, the largest of the Roman colonies established in Morocco between the 1st- & 2ndcenturies A.D. A guided tour through this UNESCO World Heritage site reveals excavated 2000-year old ruins, particularly noted for amazing colorful mosaics and remains of Roman monuments such as the Basilica, the Temple, and the Arch of Triumph. At the end of the afternoon, continue in the coach to the city of Fez Morocco s cultural and spiritual capital! Check into the hotel enjoy free time this evening for dinner and to enjoy the riad, which is our home for the next three nights. Day 4 (Mon, Sep 17) (B, L, D) Fes Meknes - Fes After breakfast at the riad, take a ½-day excursion to the royal city of Meknes, which served as the capital of Morocco in the 17th-century for the Sultan Moulay Ismail. Though having the reputation of a ruthless warrior, this King was also an important builder during his 55-year reign. He developed Meknes from a small town into a majestic capital with gigantic ramparts, monumental gates, palaces and more than 15 miles of exterior walls. Visit the city s highlights such as the impressive granaries and stables built by the Sultan for his cavalry, the monumental gate of Bab El Mansour dominating El Hedim square and the colorful food market. Relax over lunch in this imperial city! 4

After lunch, return to Fes to visit the royal palace built in the late 19th-century as a summer residence for the King Hassan; inside see the central four-part garden and the Museum of Fez established in 1915 to showcase traditional arts. Continue to Fez El Jedid (new Fez) to discover what used to be the largest Jewish quarter in Morocco, dating back to the time of the migration of the Jews from Spain in the late 15th-century. Stroll inside this interesting quarter to see the local market and to visit a 17th-century synagogue. We hope to include a lecture on the Jewish History of Morocco, after which there is free time for dinner and the evening. Day 5 (Tue, Sep 18) (B, L) Fes Today, the Imperial city of Fez will stimulate all of the senses! Following breakfast, begin with a guided tour inside the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Fes el Bali (old Fes) to discover food & spice markets, handicraft quarters, auction squares and colorful stores. See the local communal bakeries and have a look into children s pre-schools, enter artisan workshops and discover the secrets of their ancestral arts, walk by many historic fountains, mosques & sanctuaries. Take a break for a delicious local lunch, then visit traditional weavers and the famous tanneries. Stop for a break in the Museum Nejjarine, specialized in the art of woodwork & cabinet making. Go inside the 14th-century Medersa (theological school) to admire its intricate architecture and, from outside, see the University of alqarawiyyin, which is the oldest university in history founded in 857. Stop by the former home of Maimonides the famous 12thcentury Jewish philosopher. Tonight offers free time to dine on your own at one of Fes wonderful restaurants, or, if observant of Yom Kippur, tonight begins the holiday. Day 6 (Wed, Sep 19) Fes Today offers free time to spend as you like stroll the city and the medina on your own or observe Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. Guests (Jewish or otherwise) interested in experiencing the way Moroccan Jews observe the holiday are invited to attend services at a local synagogue. Interestingly, the Muslim holiday Ashura and the Jewish holiday Yom Kippur are both opportunities during which people seek forgiveness. For Muslims, Ashura is a fasting day during which people have to reconcile with their friends, neighbors, families, and 5

offer a prayer to relieve their sins. Similarly, Yom Kippur is a fasting day full of forgiveness services. Ashura and Yom Kippur therefore share a lot of affinities as New Year purifying rituals, a reason why Moroccan Jews used to observe Yom Kippur on the occasion of Ashura. In both cases, the day offers a wonderful opportunity for reflection. All interested travelers are also invited to take free time in the beautiful and lush Bou Jeloud Gardens to stroll, sit, reflect. Tonight, join in an Optional No-Host Dinner to break the fast of the holiday! Day 7 (Thu, Sep 20) (B, L, D) Fez Ifrane Midelt Merzouga Today, after breakfast, travel south crossing the fertile plains beyond Fez and through the Mid-Atlas Mountain range, discovering a totally different landscape than what has been seen so far. Stop in the cedar forest to see the local monkeys, then continue to the surprisingly Swiss-looking town of Ifrane a charming stop providing the perfect place for a coffee/tea break. Continue to the town of Midelt, situated between the High Atlas and the Middle Atlas Mountains at an altitude of feet. A former mining town, it is now considered the capital of the region that produces the largest apple crop in Morocco and is the location of our lunch stop. Afterwards, head towards the pre-desert town of Merzouga and, along the way, see the tents of nomadic shepherds and their herds of goats and sheep. Stops for pictures along the magnificent gorges of the Ziz valley and pass rows of sky-scraping palm trees and mud made fortified villages before reaching our hotel. Day 8 (Fri, Sep 21) (B, L, D) Merzouga After breakfast this morning, leave the coach behind and board a 4x4-vehicle to set out for a great journey through barren plateaus to Erg Chebbi dunes. Cross an arid landscape before reaching a spot where precious fossils are found. Continue the adventure by crossing small dunes to reach a nomad settlement in the area. Here, enjoy a glass of Saharan tea with a local nomadic family. Next, drive along golden dunes to a village known for its dark skin Berber community. Have lunch in the village, enjoying a local specialty, then listen to renowned masters of the Gnaoua spiritual music of south Morocco. Stop by a gallery to see the works of a local artist. 6

In the late afternoon, if you like (yes, this is optional*), leave all wheels behind and take the last part of today s trip by camel ride. Slowly trekking across the sand dunes on a camel is the quintessential Moroccan experience; admire the spectacular sunset before riding the last leg to a private camp. Yes, you read it correctly Camp! But, this is far from backwoods camping with sleeping bags and river baths; this is a beautiful camping experience with the amenities of a lovely hotel. Enjoy dinner in the main tent and relax with tea by the fire. *Guests who prefer to return to the previous evening s hotel are welcome to do so. Day 9 (Sat, Sep 22) (B, L, D) Merzouga - Dades Wake early to enjoy the magnificent scene of the sunrise over the sand dunes, have breakfast and leave the Sahara desert to head to the Dades Valley. First, cross a series of luxuriant oases and see remains of the medieval Khettara irrigational systems as well as some local agricultural activities. Stop for lunch in Tineghir, a stunning oasis at the foot of the High Atlas Mountains. Traverse an enchanting valley, a perfect site to take some extraordinary pictures. Enjoy a stroll along the bottom of the 984-feet deep Todra Gorge, home to a variety of rare plants and bird species. Afterwards, continue along the Route of a Thousand Kasbahs, a region of earth-made fortresses with elaborately decorated façades making this architectural technique and style quite unique to this part of the South of Morocco. Arrive in Dades and relax over dinner at the hotel. Day 10 (Sun, Sep 23) (B, L, D) Kelaat M'Gouna - Ait Ben Haddou - Ouarzazate After breakfast, drive through The Valley of the Roses and make a stop in El Kelaa M gouna, Morocco s rose capital to visit a distillery, where the precious oil is extracted from these fragrant beauties then sent to the perfume-houses in France. Of course, some of the rose oil is retained to scent locally-made creams, balms, soaps & more! Next, head across a spectacular barren plateau to Ouarzazate the Hollywood of Morocco! the film-making town built at the foot of the snow-topped High Atlas Mountains. Visit with the Kasbah of Taourirt, which was once the home of the "Lords of the Atlas." 7

After lunch, tour a movie studio with huge sets where several famous movies have been made. Continue to the UNESCOprotected ksar of Ait Ben Haddou a group of earthen buildings surrounded by high walls, is a traditional pre-saharan habitat. The houses crowd together within the defensive walls, which are reinforced by corner towers. Ait-Ben-Haddou is one of the most beautiful and striking examples of Berber architecture of southern Morocco. The natural beauty of the whole area and the architecture of this village have attracted many film producers who made this place the background for the making of films such as Kingdom of Heaven, Gladiator, Babel and more. This evening, enjoy dinner and our lovely hotel. Day 11 (Mon, Sep 24) (B, L, D) Ouarzazate - Taroudant This morning, after breakfast, board to coach to head west, keeping a sharp-eye out for raptors like Lanner Falcon, Booted Eagle and Long-legged Buzzard. Along the way, stop in a town known for a variety of rugs! While factory-made pieces can be found in town, this rug cooperative features handmade and hand-woven rugs by Berber women working in many small villages throughout the area. After lunch, journey on to a saffron cooperative to learn about the most expensive spice in the world. Finally, arrive in Taroudant, a lovely town with a majestic, old, pink and orange-tinted circuit of high walls. Half citadel/half oasis, the town s atmosphere seems unchanged for the last 100 years, maybe because the French never established a village here during their occupation of Morocco. Thus, Taroudant remains a traditional Berber town. Far off the traditional path of travel, Taroudant is a great place to experience a very local town, free from crowds, generic food & tourist shops. Settle into our hotel and join others in the group for dinner. Day 12 (Tue, Sep 25) (B, L, D) Taroudant The Pearl of Souss, Taroudant is one of the oldest fortified cities in Morocco, first capital of the Almoravides dynasty in early 11th-century an ancient trading center with its craftsmen, colorful markets, and narrow, shaded, bustling streets. Take a panoramic tour of the city, followed by a guided stroll through the medina, which has resisted the influences of the ages and has conserved the magnificent ochre-colored ramparts. 8

Its intriguing souks (shops) situated around Assarag Square, the Berber market at Tamaklotte Square are "must see" places, which offer locals and visitors long passageways of shops containing jewellers, antique dealers, and stone sculptors. The local handicrafts are inherited from traditions that are centuries-old. Find Berber carpets, leather goods, jewelry and finely-etched silver, famous for their elegance and for the workmanship of their master artisans. After lunch, take free time to go windowshopping, to explore the town on your own, or to relax by the hotel s pool. In the late afternoon, return to one of the squares to sit and have a cup of tea while listening and watching local musicians. Return to the hotel for dinner and the evening. Day 13 (Wed, Sep 26) (B, L) Taroudant Essaouria After breakfast this morning, enter the world of Chilean-born painter Claudio Bravo who lived, at the end of his life, in his palace near Taroudant. Now, the palace perpetuates the memory of the hyperrealist painter, highly rated in the world of art. Claudio Bravo had chosen to live and work in Morocco for its exceptional light. He first set his sights on Tangier and Marrakech, before settling permanently in Taroudant. Next, stop in the ocean-side city of Agadir for lunch before continuing up the Atlantic coast to the old fortified fishing port of Essaouira. This picturesque port was founded in the 16th-century by the Portuguese and occupied by them till the mid 18th-century when the Trans-Saharan trade routes fell apart. The present town dates from the 18th-century, when it was reconsidered and re-structured by King Mohamed Ben Abdellah to widen the trade with European countries. See the impressive town fortifications consisting of an amazing mixture of Portuguese and Berber military architecture. Arrive in time to enjoy sunset over the port, then enjoy free time for dinner and the evening. Day 14 (Thu, Sep 27) (B, L) Essaouria After breakfast, explore this charming town filled with interesting gems the spice souks, the jewellery market, different artisan workshops and the carpentry workshops devoted to cedar and thuya cabinet making. Watch a marquetry demonstration to see the process of wood inlay; See a souk filled with a large variety of these beautiful wood pieces. Visit the synagogue before departing on the coach to stop at the belvedere for a marvellous panoramic view of the city. 9

Continue inland across the thuya and argan forest to stop at an argan oil women s cooperative. Unique to southwestern Morocco, argan oil and its many virtues is now known (and used in cosmetics) all over the world. The region also produces grapes and is known for its local wines red, rosé and white exported to different parts of Morocco and abroad. After a tour of a vineyard & winery, sit for lunch and a local wine tasting. Return to Essaouira, which has attracted artists and musicians from different parts of the world. Take free time to visit some of their works in the different art galleries, for dinner and for the evening. Day 15 (Fri, Sep 28) (B, L) Essaouria Marrakech After breakfast, drive to Marrakech in time for lunch and time in a famous garden created by the orientalist Jacques Majorelle. The gardens house a collection of plants from the four corners of the earth, flourishing among elegant ornamental lakes and an Art Deco villa of which the special shade of bold cobalt blue is named after the artist Majorelle blue. Since 1980, the garden has been owned by Yves Saint- Laurent. Visit the Berber museum displaying Yves Saint Laurent s personal collection of Berber antiques, learn fascinating facts about the Berbers of Morocco, and admire YSL s marvelous treasure. Afterward, stop for tea & cookies and a tour at a unique and inspiring restaurant, run by an organization that helps underprivileged single mothers overcome poverty and social stigma by providing them with counseling and vocational training to become professional cooks and pastry makers. Check into the hotel and enjoy free time for dinner & the evening. Day 16 (Sat, Sep 29) (B, D) Marrakech Considered by many as Morocco s most cosmopolitan city, Marrakech is full of wonder! After breakfast, discover an exciting blend of modern architecture and an ancient walled medina. Stand by the Koutoubia Mosque to marvel at its 282-foot minaret, an architectural landmark dating back to the late 12 th -century. Enter the Kasbah from Bab Agnaou gate to visit the historical and beautifully ornate 16 th -century Saadian necropolis. On a private guided tour through the labyrinth of narrow alleyways, pass the interesting food stalls & bakeries on the way to the 19 th -century Bahia Palace. Discover the intricate work of local artisans who decorated this splendid home built by a powerful Vizir for his Harem. End the morning with a stroll inside the Jewish quarter and visit the historical synagogue built in 1492 by Sephardic Jews expelled from Spain. 10

After a break for lunch, continue the guided tour through the hidden sides of Marrakech to admire the architectural beauty of Medersa Ben Youssef, a medieval theological school dating back to the 16 th - century. See the oldest building in the city built by a dynasty, which ruled in the 12 th -century. From there, explore the artisan quarter and the colorful souks filled with all sorts of handicrafts & treasures. Before sunset, stroll through the famous Jemaa El Fna Square, where hundreds of locals and visitors come to spend the end of the day watching jugglers, dancers, fortune tellers, storytellers & musicians. Next, have a private meeting/lecture with an Imam for insights into Muslim community and religious life. Return to the hotel to freshen up before our gathering to toast and celebrate our time together at a Farewell Dinner at one of the city s famous restaurants. Day 17 (Sun, Sep 30) Depart for U.S. Departure Day. Our local guide will assure your transfer to and assistance at the Marrakech airport (Airport Code: RAK) for your return flight. Or, have the option to extend your stay with extra night(s) at the hotel. Notes on Magical Morocco Cuisine Moroccan dishes are famously flavorful, but are not spicy. Spice-lovers may request harissa, a chili pepper based condiment that can be added to dishes. Meals often start with a series of hot and/or cold salads. Traditional main courses include Tajine (a thick vegetable and meatoptional stew, such as Chicken w/preserved Lemons, or Lamb w/prune & Honey); Djajj M'hamer (chicken stuffed with couscous, almonds and raisins); Pastilla (or Bastilla) a flaky pastry filled with savory meat and, often dried fruit; Mechoui (roasted or grilled lamb). Along the coast, fish and seafood dishes are also common. Of course, mint tea is very typical and is available throughout the country. This Itinerary & You This trip offers a rich, full itinerary. 12 to book flights arriving and departing in accordance with the dates on this itinerary. Airport transfers in Morocco are included in the trip. Accommodations To experience a wide range of the interesting even indigenous accommodations found in Morocco, stay in a combination of traditional hotels, lovely resorts, charming riads and, if you like, even an upscale tent in a comfortable desert camp! So, what is a riad? A riad is a traditional Moroccan house, located within an ancient medina (walled city), designed around a central courtyard and/or garden. These beautiful homes have been restored to reflect traditional Moroccan décor, yet to also provide guests with many of the modern amenities found in 4- and 5-star hotels. After entering the front door of a riad, there is a hallway that does not yet permit a glimpse into the heart of the house. This layered effect of walls, doors, and hallways is two-fold. First, this historical privacy feature allows the outside door to be open to the public, while offering protection for those within. Secondly, it creates a sound barrier against the noise of the streets. Passing from the bustling streets, through the nondescript exterior and into the central courtyard or garden of a riad, be surprised and delighted by tranquil, elegant beauty found within. This courtyard is the heart of the house to which all of the rooms and stairways are connected. In most riads, the courtyard is left open to the sky, which permits fresh air and sunlight to enter. Some courtyards are filled with trees and plants, while others may be centered on a tiered, tiled fountain or even a small swimming pool. In addition to spacious central courtyards, most riads are made up of six to eight bedrooms of traditional design with en-suite bathrooms. Each bedroom is a unique size and shape, with its own distinct features. Styles of riads vary as each, like homes the world over, is decorated to the owner s taste. However, most blend the beloved traditional design elements of zeliej (tile work), plasterwork, and cedar features. All riads do, however, retain one thing in common: they are places of peaceful beauty and authentic Moroccan hospitality. 12

Walking While an air-conditioned private coach is provided throughout most of the stay in Morocco for transportation among cities and sites, many areas such as palaces, forts, markets, bazaars, and more! require walking.
