58-25 Queens Blvd., Woodside, NY T: (718) ; (800) F: (718) E: W: Nature & Cultural Journeys for the Discerning Traveler YOU ARE CORDIALLY INVITED TO JOIN THE HENRY VILAS ZOO TO EXPERIENCE THE NATURE AND WILDLIFE OF THE NATIONAL PARKS OF THE SOUTHWEST AMERICA S GREATEST NATURAL TREASURES AUGUST 11 TO 21, 2019

OVERVIEW: If you have never found yourself staring at dramatic rock and nature scenery or standing in the middle of the antelope canyon, then it is time to embark on a tour of the National Parks of the Southwest. Explore rocky canyon trails, multichromatic geysers and imposing mountain ranges, and marvel at a myriad of meteors showering the nightly sky. Experience the last frontiers of Nevada, Utah, Arizona, Colorado and New Mexico. Hike century-old trails of Zion, Bryce, Grand Canyon and Monument Valley. Each park is truly awe-inspiring in its own way and many people may not realize just how diverse the United States is. Bison, bobcat, buffalo, cougar, and grizzly bear roam freely. Beaver, mink, raccoon, otter, bighorn sheep, mountain lion, mule and white-tailed deer, as well as more than 250 bird species, are waiting to be discovered. Visiting the National Parks of America is not only a discovery of wildlife, but also a trip back in history. Relive the days of fearless first settlers, gold miners, trappers and traders, who made their way west in rickety carriages or on horseback. Imagine joining their caravans, and rediscover mystical petroglyphs carved by Native American tribes roaming the plains. Discover the world of the Shoshone, Flathead, Navajo, Apache, Anasazi, and Paiute. In the 19 th and early 20 th century, the National Parks were officially protected, to conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and wildlife therein, and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such manner and by such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations. This is the time, and the opportunity, to go back to humanity s roots, and rediscover the natural beauty of the National Parks of America.

ITINERARY: DAY 1 ~ SUNDAY ~ AUGUST 11 LAS VEGAS, NEVADA Your journey begins upon your arrival at Las Vegas, located in the Mojave Desert, most famous for the number of casinos and hotel complexes, decorated with different themes and bright lights, creating a fantasy-like atmosphere. (D) Travel times/distances: minimal DAY 2 ~ MONDAY ~ AUGUST 12 ZION NATIONAL PARK / BRYCE CANYON NATIONAL PARK Depart Las Vegas for Zion National Park. Zion Canyon is fifteen miles long and up to half a mile deep, and cuts through the reddish colored Navajo Sandstone. The park has a unique geography with mountains, canyons, buttes, mesas, monoliths, rivers, slot canyons, and natural arches, and hosts a variety of unusual plants and animals: 289 species of birds, 19 species of bats, and 32 species of reptiles make up just a portion of the wildlife in the park s four ecosystems: desert, riparian, woodland, and coniferous forest. Zion National Park is home to many exotic animals and plants that cannot be found anywhere else. Sedimentation, uplift, and erosion have resulted in elevations ranging from 3,600 to 8,700 feet, and the unique geology of massive cliff walls has created diverse environments of deserts, canyons, hanging gardens, riparian zones, and high plateaus. Take time to explore the town and the National Park at your leisure. Visit one of the museums or discover the surroundings with the park tram. The Human History Museum displays the rich human history of Zion National Park, showcasing Native American culture, historic pioneer settlement, and Zion s growth as a National Park. The Zion National Park s Museum preserves approximately 22,500 objects housed in the natural history collection. Continue with your drive to Bryce Canyon National Park and your accommodation for the next two nights, Best Western Grand, which offers comfortable accommodations and free Wi-Fi. Relax in the pool or whirlpool, or on one of the patio areas. Overnights at BEST WESTERN GRAND. (B,L) Travel times/distances: 160 miles / 2.5 hours to Zion & 1.5 hours Zion to Bryce

DAY 3 ~ TUESDAY ~ AUGUST 13 BRYCE CANYON NATIONAL PARK, UTAH This morning travel to Bryce Canyon National Park, famous for its Claron Formation of hoodoos. The word hoodoo refers to slot canyons, windows, fins and spires of rock created by erosion and rain water. Minerals deposited within different rock types cause hoodoos to have different colors throughout their height. At Bryce Canyon, hoodoos range in size from that of an average human to heights exceeding a 10-story building. Formed in sedimentary rock, their shapes are affected by erosional patterns. The alternating hard and softer rock layers are made of several rock types, including siltstone, mudstone, and predominantly limestone. Bryce Canyon is known as the archetype hoodoo terrain. The canyons and plateau of Bryce Canyon National Park are home to many animals, and the park boundaries mean little to their migratory patterns. Hummingbirds, nesting Peregrine Falcon, Rocky Mountain elk and pronghorn cross daily through the forested plateau and barren amphitheater. The search for food and water leads them to the best place to find sustenance and shelter. Many animals share habitats, and the flow of populations is interdependent on all the members of the wildlife community. There are about 210 species of birds in Bryce Canyon and the surrounding area, including Wild Turkey, American White Pelican, and Great Blue Heron. Walking through the valley of Bryce Canyon, you ll stop by the visitor s center, where exhibits explain the history of the geological formations in greater detail. This evening, visit Ebenezer s for dinner and lively cowboy entertainment. Rated the best place to eat in Bryce Canyon, your meal will include a live performance by the Bar G Wrangler s, Ebenezer s resident band. Overnight at BEST WESTERN GRAND. (B,D) Travel times/distances: minimal DAY 4 ~ WEDNESDAY ~ AUGUST 14 PAGE, ARIZONA / LAKE POWELL / ANTELOPE CANYON / HORSESHOE BEND Today s drive takes you to Page, the gateway to Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and Lake Powell. Created as a company town for the construction of Glen Canyon Dam in the 1960s, it has steadily grown, adding more and more amenities not usually experienced in a small desert town. Page sits atop Manson Mesa and overlooks the 186- mile long lake, the dramatic Glen Canyon Dam and the surrounding canyons, arches and historical Native ruins. En

route stop for a picnic lunch at Lake Powel amidst the breathtaking sights and afterwards discover one of the most spectacular, yet little known attractions of the Lake Powell area, Antelope Canyon. Venture off on a jeep tour to perhaps one of the most photographed slot canyons on Earth, Antelope Canyon. The canyon is located on a Navajo reservation and has been made a Navajo Tribal Park. Antelope is the most visited slot canyon in the Southwest, partly because it is easily accessible and by far the most publicized, and also since it is extremely beautiful, with just the right combination of depth, width, length, rock color and ambient light. Many other slot canyons are deeper, narrower or longer, and some have rock that is even more colorful and sculptured, but here conditions are ideal. Enjoy an exciting 4 4 ride through the vibrant pink sand and dramatic red sandstone. Hike a gentle trail of loose desert sand and sandstone rocks that date back to the early Jurassic period. Over millions of years, wind and water have eroded these rocks to create absolutely weird, but awe-inspiring shapes and patterns. Upon reaching the overlook, you are awed by the extraordinary view of Horseshoe Bend as you see the emerald green Colorado River make a horse-shoe shaped bend before rushing towards the Grand Canyon. The overlook is 4,200 feet above sea level and the Colorado River is at 3,200 feet above sea level making it a breathtaking 1,000-foot drop. The magnificence of the landscape cannot be expressed in words or through a photograph! Your home, Lake Powell Resort, is located at Wahweap Marina in Page, right in the heart of all your down-lake activities and adventures. The Resort offers comfortable lodging and suites, terrific dining and an ideal place to return to each evening after a day touring. There s Wi-Fi access in Lake Powell Resort Lobby and Driftwood Lounge. Overnight at LAKE POWEL RESORT. (B,L) Travel times/distances: 160 miles / 3 hours DAYS 5/6 ~ THURSDAY/FRIDAY ~ AUGUST 15/16 WILLIAMS, ARIZONA / GLEN CANYON DAM / GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK After breakfast, take a 45-minute tour of Glen Canyon Dam, a concrete structure rising 710 feet above the Colorado River. The Dam was engineered and constructed as part of the Colorado River Storage Project. The main purpose of the dam was to provide water storage and generate power for growing communities. Continue on to Grand Canyon National Park. With the diverse landscape, habitat and elevation change from the top of the rim to the Canyon floor, there is a huge variety of wild mammals in the Grand Canyon. Canyon bats are most often seen at sunset when they begin to feed on flying insects. Bighorn sheep love rocky terrain and canyon walls, and it is amazing how they can climb, walk and jump around sheer cliffs. It s possible to see coyote at

What is a better way to end your day than standing on the edge of the mighty Grand Canyon watching the sunset? This is when the Grand Canyon comes alive with colors, great shadows and dancing lights. The view of the sun dipping behind the plateau has been described as aweinspiring, breathtaking, astonishing and even overwhelming! the top of the rims and inside the canyon. Cottontail rabbits are prevalent, feeding on native grasses and berries and keeping a lookout for bobcat and coyote. Elk frequently roam the forested areas, stalked by mountain lion that can grow up to 6 feet long and weigh over 200 pounds. They have made a significant comeback, as they were once almost extinct within the canyon area. Mule deer are the most frequently sighted animals on the South Rim of the Canyon while ringtail cats, belonging to the raccoon family, forage for food in campgrounds. They have big round eyes, a long tail with white bands, mouse-like ears, and if cornered, they will spray a strong-smelling mist similar to a skunk. On your second day here, you get to go on an unforgettable ride on historic Grand Canyon Railway, and travel from Williams to Grand Canyon Park. The passenger cars have all been restored to reflect the grace and style of 1950s era coaches. The train leaves daily at 9:30 a.m. and travels 65 miles north to the south rim of Grand Canyon National Park, arriving at 11:45 a.m. The train leaves the Grand Canyon at 3:30 p.m., allowing you ample time to tour the canyon on your own. DAY 7 ~ SATURDAY ~ AUGUST 17 MONUMENT VALLEY, UTAH /FOUR CORNERS NATIONAL MONUMENT/CORTEZ, COLORADO Monument Valley is actually not a valley, but a wide, flat landscape interrupted by colorful red buttes and spires rising hundreds of feet into the air. These magnificent environmental features are the last remnants of sedimentary rock layers with which the entire region once was covered. One of the most remarkable landscapes in the world, Monument Valley contains some of the most dramatic rock formations on the Colorado For the next two nights you get to experience the luxury of a bygone era by staying at the Grand Canyon Railway Hotel. It was designed to resemble the century-old train depot that housed the original Fray Marcos Hotel. The 297-room hotel is just a block away from downtown Williams and historic Route 66. All rooms are equipped with modern amenities. There s free Wi-Fi in the lobby. After a workout in the gym, guests can enjoy a meal in the on-site restaurant. Overnights at the GRAND CANYON RAILWAY HOTEL. (B, Daily) Travel times/distances: 133 miles / 2.5hours

Plateau. These large blocks of sandstone were compacted during the Paleozoic era, and the effects of differential erosion through exfoliation, wind, and water contributed to the strange formations. The reddish hues in the sand and rock of the valley derive from iron oxide, and the black streaks, called desert varnish, are manganese oxide. In addition to sandstone formations, there are also remains of volcanic activity, El Capitan being the most famous. Monument Valley is home of the purple sage; the color beautifully contrasts to the red rocks and sands. Very few trees survive here because of the extreme dryness, and only occasional juniper bushes grow near the boundaries of the valley. Cliffrose, rabbitbrush and snakewood spruce from the land as soon as some moisture penetrates the ground. In the afternoon, explore the valley on a jeep tour, and enjoy a picnic lunch amidst the breathtaking sights on a local Navajo Reservation. Continue on to Four Corners National Monument. Here you will find the one spot in the United States where you literally can be in four places at once, the place where Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Colorado meet. Located in a Navajo Indian Reservation, you will have time to browse the local crafts and find a way to stand in all four states at the same time. Tonight, settle into your hotel, the Holiday Inn Express in Cortez, Colorado. Centrally located, it s the perfect spot to continue exploring the southwestern United States. There is a pool and hot tub where you can relax and an on-sight restaurant where you can wind down after a busy day. Overnight at HOLIDAY INN EXPRESS. (B, L). Travel times/distances: 213 miles / 3.5hours (Grand Canyon to Monument Valley)/150 miles/2.5 hours (Monument Valley to Cortez) DAY 8 ~ SUNDAY ~ AUGUST 18 MOAB, UTAH / MESA VERDE NATIONAL PARK / ARCHES NATIONAL PARK This morning you ll explore the cliff dwellings of the ancestral Pueblo people who made Mesa Verde their home for over 700 years, from AD 600 to Today, the park protects over 5,000 archaeological sites including 600 cliff dwellings. A ranger from the National Park Service will guide you through the dwellings, including the famous Spruce Tree House, one of the bestpreserved examples of these ancient homes. Continue your trip toward Moab and enjoy a truly spectacular sunset at Arches National Park. Moab s unique combination of beautiful red rock scenery, two national parks, and the cool waters of the Colorado River has made it one of the most sought-after destinations. Arches National Park is a red rock wonderland, with beautiful formations, winding trails, and awe-inspiring sunsets. Discover a landscape of contrasting colors, landforms and textures unlike any other in the world. The park has over 2,000 natural stone arches, in addition to hundreds of soaring pinnacles, massive fins and giant balanced rocks.

This classic lodge was the site to many famous movies, including Rio Grande with John Wayne. Red Cliffs Lodge offers the perfect balance of relaxation and adventure. Additionally, this lodge is home to the Castle Creek Winery, the largest in Utah, offering daily wine tasting. Every room at this lodge has the perfect view of the Colorado River or Castle Creek and is fully equipped with state of the art appliances. Overnight at RED CLIFFS LODGE. (B) Travel times/distances: 115 miles / 2 hours DAY 9 ~ MONDAY ~ AUGUST 19 ARCHES NATIONAL PARK Your morning is devoted to exploration of Arches National Park, while the afternoon is at leisure and you can choose between several optional activities. The intertwining trails allow hikers to see many of the fascinating sandstone arches. All-terrain vehicles or boats can be rented to gain different viewpoints of the spectacular mountains. Overnight at RED CLIFFS LODGE. (B) Travel times/distances: minimal DAY 10 ~ TUESDAY ~ AUGUST 20 SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH This morning, sit back and enjoy the scenic trip to Salt Lake City, passing by brick cottages, log cabins, and tree-lined country roads. Prior to the Mormon settlement of the city by the lake in 1847, the Shoshone, Ute, and Paiute Native American Tribes inhabited the Salt Lake Valley for thousands of years, setting up camp in canyons near streams coming down from the mountains. The first explorer in the Salt Lake area is believed to be the trapper James Jim Bridger. He was one of the greatest frontiersmen of Utah, establishing himself by learning native languages and mediating between native tribes. His outstanding physical condition allowed him to survive extreme weather conditions and he was among the first white men to see the geysers and other natural wonders of the Yellowstone region. In the winter of , Bridger was the first American to see the Great Salt Lake. He reached the valley area floating in a bullboat made of buffalo hide, which was stretched around a wooden frame. Due to its high salinity, he believed the lake to be an arm of the Pacific Ocean.

Salt Lake is the habitat for shorebirds, saltwater birds, White-faced Ibis, gulls, Trumpeter Swans, and phalaropes, and there are eight waterfowl management areas stationed around the lake. Pelicans are sometimes seen around the shoreline, as well as Wilson s Phalaropes, herons, and millions of migrating shorebirds. Eagles visit the area in February, and you just may catch sight of wintering Bald Eagles feasting on blacktail jackrabbit. In the wilderness around Salt Lake City you could spot antelope, deer, bobcat, coyote, and especially a population of over 600 bison, all descendants from 12 bison that were brought to the area in If you head to the northern or southern shore of the lake you are likely to get a glimpse of these imposing beasts, but keep your distance, as bison are not as friendly as they appear. In Salt Lake City, visit the Temple Square the most visited sight in Utah. Here you will find the famous dome shaped Tabernacle, home to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, the Lion House, the former home of Brigham Young and now a restaurant, and the LDS Conference Center, with manicured gardens and LDS inspired art. Check into the Plaza Hotel, located just off Temple Square. From the hotel you will have easy access to the main square and comfortable and spacious accommodations await your return for the evening. Enjoy a farewell dinner as a group as you prepare to return home. Overnight at PLAZA HOTEL. (B, D). Travel times/distances: 240 miles / 4.0 hours DAY 11 ~ WEDNESDAY ~ AUGUST 21 SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH After breakfast, enjoy free time to shop and explore Salt Lake City before transferring to the airport for your flight home, bringing with you the memories of the scenic national parks. (D) DAY 12 ~ THURSDAY ~ AUGUST 22 BOZEMAN / WEST YELLOWSTONE Depart for the Mammoth area and get set to explore the Gardner River and Canyon area. The accompanying scenery is a myriad of past and present terrains formed by glaciers and 700,000-year-old Basalt lava flows. Now, thick vegetation clusters around Rocky Mountain juniper, cottonwood and Douglas-fir trees that tempt elk. Low growing willow trees follow the river s edge where moose sightings are numerous. You may also see osprey, dipper and kingfisher looking for a tasty mountain river morsel. And watch the skies for the soaring Bald Eagle, whose territory is usually within two miles from any given water supply. Your drive continues east towards the Tower-Roosevelt an area that truly represents the on-going impact of geological events, past and present that have formed this fascinating Park. At every bend in the road, different beautiful and eclectic environments amaze and surprise all formed by a combination of volcanic and glacier activities and the natural process of erosion. AAA rated and situated just two blocks from the west entrance to Yellowstone National Park, the Three Bears Lodge is where you will spend your first three nights. Rustic, yet comfortable, the lodge is located within walking distance of the downtown s restaurants and shops. The rooms themselves feature furniture made with reclaimed wood and the restaurant, a favorite for locals and visitors, offers memorabilia and photos depicting the history of the region. Overnight at THREE BEARS LODGE. (B, D) DAY 13 ~ FRIDAY ~ AUGUST 23 YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK: NORRIS GEYSER BASIN/ GRAND CANYON OF YELLOWSTONE / LAKE YELLOWSTONE Today, you will discover the lower loop of the magnificent Yellowstone National Park. The West Thumb Geyser Basin is a steamy expanse of active and dormant geysers on the shores of Yellowstone Lake and Norris Geyser Basin is the hottest and most changeable thermal area in Yellowstone. Explore the location of the world's tallest active geyser, colorful hot springs, and microscopic life in one of the most extreme environments on earth.

The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone is roughly 20 miles long, 1,000 feet deep and 2,500 feet wide and a relatively young formation at only 10,000 years old. Splashed with deep reds, oranges and coppers due to its high content of Rhyolite, a hard, somewhat volcanic rock has inspired many artists throughout the years. Scour the numerous cliffs for movement or enormous fivefoot nests of twigs and branches; if lucky you may spot an Osprey or hear the whistling sound it makes while hunting echoing off the canyon walls. Meadows along your drive make for common sightings of elk, moose and bison. Enjoy a stop at the Lake Yellowstone Hotel and Cabins which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Its doors opened in 1891, when touring the park by stagecoach was in vogue; now this classic, historic hotel has been restored to its 1920s grandeur. Located on the shores of Yellowstone Lake, it sits on a site long known as a meeting place for Indians, trappers, and mountain men. Make sure to visit the Sun Room, where you can sip your favorite cocktail as you enjoy wonderful views of the lake. Overnights at THREE BEARS LODGE (B, L). DAY 14 ~ SATURDAY ~ AUGUST 24 YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK: MADISON/OLD FAITHFUL/WEST THUMB TO JACKSON, WYOMING As you wander through the area surrounding Old Faithful and its remarkable number of geysers, you should realize that the Park is home to almost 60% of the world s geysers. Of course, one of the most famous attractions is the Old Faithful geyser a historic example of the effects of Mother Nature s force upon the Upper Basin where more than 100 geysers can be found. For almost 150 years, visitors have experienced the thunderous and steaming wonder of its eruptions, which are spaced at fairly predictable times. Another ten geysers are fairly predictable as to when they will expel in thunderous pillars of steam, including Castle, Grand, Daisy and Riverside. This afternoon, pass through Grant Village and continue through the Red Mountains towards the south exit of Yellowstone National Park. This small range of mountains is completely contained within the boundaries of Yellowstone National Park. The name was derived from the prevailing color of the volcanic rocks which compose them. There are 12 peaks in the range, with 10,308-foot-high Mount Sheridan being the highest.

Jackson Hole is a valley located in west-central Wyoming and formed by the Teton Range on the western side and the Gros Ventre Range on the eastern side. The first descriptions of the valley were made in the journals of John Colter in 1806, the first Caucasian to see the valley; Native Americans had been using it for hunting and ceremonial purposes. Settlement began around 1870 and today it is a winter and summer playground for outdoor enthusiasts from around the world. Home to the Snake River and a gateway to Grand Teton National Park, opportunities for active adventures are boundless, such as hiking, rock climbing, mountain biking, horseback riding, fishing and kayaking. Artisans have also set up shop here with galleries featuring well-known artists, as well as craft fairs with local treasures. Your home for the next two nights, the Parkway Inn, is locally owned and operated and just three short blocks from Jackson Hole s main downtown area. The Parkway offers guests a friendly mix of modern comfort, old world charm, and warm hospitality, including breakfast in its fireplace lounge and ice-cold lemonade in the afternoons. Overnight at PARKWAY INN. (B, L) DAY 15 ~ SUNDAY ~ AUGUST 25 GRAND TETON NATIONAL PARK Begin your day with a guided Wild and Scenic Raft Trip down the Snake River by far one of the top activities not to miss! For ten miles along the Snake River, our guides will show you amazing Teton views, share in-depth knowledge about the local flora and fauna, and often you ll get a close-up view of wildlife, including Bald Eagle, moose, bison, elk, Osprey, and beaver. Explore Grand Teton National Park dominated by the Teton Range that is an active fault, block mountain front, 40 miles long and almost nine miles wide. The highest peak is the Grand Teton at an elevation of 13,770 feet with 12 other peaks at elevations of over 12,000 feet. Seven morainal (combination of earth and stone) lakes lie at the base of the Range and there are also over 100 alpine and back country lakes. Approximately 50 miles of the Snake River s 1,056 miles lies within the Park. A wide range of habitats may be found here, including alpine meadows, sagebrush flats, lodgepole pine forests and mountain streams. Wildlife is abundant due to the diverse habitats inside the Park. Various species of the mammals are commonly seen: shrew, chipmunk, marmot, flying squirrel, gopher, beaver, vole, porcupine, muskrat, weasel, coyote and badger. Other mammals uncommonly seen are snowshoe hare, river otter, elk, mule deer, moose, pronghorn and bison. Count yourself very lucky if you see any of the following animals: grizzly bear, red fox, grey wolf, mountain lion, lynx, bobcat, whitetailed deer and bighorn sheep. Bird watchers will be impressed and amazed at the over 300 species found in the park, including 27 hawk species. Highlights based on habitat include the following:
