Itinerary Overview Yosemite, Joshua Tree & San Francisco Instructor Development 65 Days (Fall) In General - Wilderness travel is demanding. It can literally take every waking moment to get from point A to point B. From getting up early to pack your bags and cook breakfast, to hiking with a loaded backpack for hours, to climbing peaks that rise well over 12,000 feet high, traveling in the wilderness is difficult. Past students and instructors agree that arriving physically fit will enhance your experience and ability to do well on the course and ultimately allow you to take full advantage of the expedition. You don t need to have previous backpacking, rock climbing or mountaineering experience. We will teach you skills for wilderness travel how to pack appropriately, load a backpack, set up tarps, belay, rock climb and navigate using a map and compass. For those looking to further their careers in the outdoors, a large emphasis of your course will focus on the methodology of Experiential Education. You will have an opportunity to learn from some of the best instructors in the industry and then apply your skills as an educator throughout course. This course could be the stepping-stone into your world as an Outdoor Educator. In addition, we offer a Wilderness First Responder during your semester course, which is necessary to move forward in your outdoor education career. Your course will begin the moment you are picked up at the Fresno Airport, and will continue through your trip into the Sierra Nevada, where the real magic takes place. Course Area Sierra Nevada Range, California This is the largest continuous mountain range in the contiguous U.S. It extends 400 miles from north to south a greater length than the Swiss, Italian, and French Alps combined! It is filled with smooth granite domes, jagged peaks, cool alpine lakes, and lush meadows. Atop the domes one can view the jagged profiles of the LeConte Divide, the Ritter Range, and the Great Western Divide, all containing mountain peaks and passes up to 14,000 feet in elevation! Because of the beauty reflected in both moon and sun light, conservationist John Muir referred to these peaks as the Range of Light. Fall in the Sierra is one of California s best-kept secrets. The stable weather of the summer months continues well into September and makes for warm, sunny days to explore the mountains without the nuisance of mosquitoes and crowds. Nights can be cool and crisp as the first hint of winter creeps in. Expect daytime temperatures to be in the 60s Fahrenheit with nights in the 30s. An extra margin of comfort with clothing layers is always recommended as the first snowflakes can start to appear at any point in the fall. Quick winter storms may pass through and last a few days before the warm rays of sun return. Due to the Sierra s very low humidity and high elevation, the effects of the sun are extreme. Proper sun protection is of utmost importance, even in the fall. 65 Day Instructor Semester Itinerary Page: 1 7 Outward Bound Updated 07/2015
During this course, you can expect to travel on and off-trail through forest as well as alpine terrain. The trails, where you can find them, are of high quality. The off-trail routes can be especially challenging as these routes traverse snowfields, scree slopes, boulder fields and alpine passes. The landscape can be rough, demanding, steep, and exposed - but for backpacking, climbing, and camping there are few places in the world that compare. We currently use three main course areas in the High Sierra for our Semester programs: Yosemite National Park, John Muir Wilderness, and the Ansel Adams Wilderness. On your course you will experience all that these beautiful wilderness areas have to offer. Joshua Tree, California: Welcome to High Desert moonscape, the land of granite domes and the namesake of the charismatic Joshua Tree. Rugged granite mountains that have been sculpted by wind and rain have climbers and hikers visiting from all around the world. Like the Sierra, Joshua Tree in the Fall is the prime time to be there. Joshua Tree also has a rich cultural history- the Serrano, Chemehuevi, and the Cahuilla people left behind rock paintings and pottery hidden throughout the park. Temperatures will range from 70 degrees during the day, and could drop to 20 or 30 degrees at night. It is a rare thing to be able to backpack through Joshua Tree because of the need to have your water resupplied every few days. Our Logistics staff will be placing water and food caches around the park to enable extended backcountry travel through this unique wilderness. San Francisco Bay Area, California: The Bay Area is a wealth of many different ecosystems and a wide variety of animal and bird species. It is a key link the Pacific Flyway, meaning many species of birds come to feed in the marshes of the bay during their migration. You will be sea kayaking across the bay and will get to experience the mysterious coastal fog and the sunny, clear days out on the water. California sea lions sunbathe on a rocky island as you paddle towards your beach camp destination. The diverse and rich San Francisco culture also offers great opportunities for your Practicum a chance to use all the leadership and group facilitation skills you have learned so far to lead a group of students in a day of team-building. Training, Main, & Final Fundamental to Outward Bound s educational outcomes is the concept of Training, Main, and Final. Our hope is to transfer leadership and decision-making skills over to students through a carefully crafted and intentional progression. Instructors will start off the course by training and teaching you everything you need to know about wilderness travel, risk management, and how to effectively work together as a team. As the course progresses, instructors will step back and take on more of a coaching role. The intent is to provide a safety net for students to work through development of their decision-making and risk management skills. If students demonstrate proficiency in all course elements, instructors will craft an appropriate level of challenge into a Final Challenge. Here instructors will step back completely to give the group autonomy and ownership of their course. Overview Arrival Y ou will have a 3-hour drive from the airport to your course start location. You will spend the first day getting geared up for the field and getting to know the other members of your team. Group gear like climbing equipment, food, tarps, kitchen equipment and first aid supplies will be divided up amongst group members. With proper planning and packing your backpack should weigh between 30-40% of your 65 Day Instructor Semester Itinerary Page: 2 7 Outward Bound Updated 07/2015
body weight. Pack weight will vary from person to person based on your size, stature and physical ability, but expect your pack to weight between 40 to 55 pounds. You will be taught essential backcountry skills such as how to sleep warm in your sleeping bag and how to cook your group meals over backcountry stoves. Depending on your specific itinerary, you may hike a few miles on Day 1. As this is not a guided trip, all group members will pitch in to do camp chores, including cooking, washing pots, and setting up tarps. Alpine Backpacking You will start your course with a backpacking expedition to help you learn the basics of wilderness travel. Topics include group travel, gear selection and usage, navigation using map & compass, cooking, weather and hazard assessment, camp craft, communication skills and learning how to work together as a team. During this portion of the course you will travel on established trails and also have the opportunity to travel cross-country, making your own route where there is no trail. Backpacking does not require the use of technical equipment such as ropes. Your instructors will have a very hands-on approach at this point in course to train you thoroughly in the skills you will need later on in your expedition. Depending on the itinerary determined by your instructors you may hike anywhere from 3 to 10 miles in a day. Peak Attempt During the backpacking portion of your course, you will have the opportunity to make several peak attempts. Peak attempts are daylong enterprises and often will entail pre-dawn starts. On these days you may wake up as early as 4am. During your peak attempts you will gain an understanding of terrain management, hazard assessment and weather consideration to make a safe peak attempt. From high atop the mountains of the Sierra Nevada Range you will have the chance to reflect on the terrain you have already traversed and where your future travel will lead. For all the effort they require, successful peak attempts are often the most rewarding experiences of an Outward Bound course. Rock Climbing Students will have ample opportunity to actively climb and improve their personal abilities with various types of climbs including bouldering, face climbs, cracks and potentially multi-pitch climbing. Topics covered will include movement over rock, top roping, belaying, knots, and anchor building. Your instructors will also teach you about the use and care of harnesses, helmets and other climbing equipment as well as site assessment and management. This section of course will implement the fundamental skills that will be necessary for the Mountain section and the Final Expedition. Wilderness First Responder & CPR During this section of the expedition you will next learn the skills you need to provide first aid in a backcountry setting. These skills will continue to make the group more self-sufficient as the instructors continue to step back to give the group more autonomous. Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification is recognized as the outdoor industry standard for backcountry medicine. Our WFR certification is taught by professionals we bring in the best outside instructors. Your certification must be earned. At the end of the course, your WFR instructor, not Outward Bound, will make the decision as to whether your skills are sufficient for certification. Your WFR instructor(s) will cover the following topics during your course: patient assessment, basic knowledge of body systems, basic life support, equipment improvisation, environmental medicine, trauma management, evacuation, and wilderness rescue. Your classroom setting for this section will be the Outward Bound basecamp located in Midpines. 65 Day Instructor Semester Itinerary Page: 3 7 Outward Bound Updated 07/2015
Solo The solo experience provides an important break from the rigors of the expedition, as well as a chance to reflect on your experience of the course so far. With sufficient food and equipment you ll spend time alone at an assigned campsite to rest, reflect, and practice the camp craft skills you have been learning throughout the course. We choose your solo site to offer as much solitude as possible, but within earshot of other group members for safety reasons. You will not travel during this time and your instructors will check on you periodically but you will be mostly alone for the duration of your solo. Many students are initially nervous about solo but most are ready for a break from the group when the time for solo arrives. For Semester programs we structure a solo progression into the course. For example, you may start with a solo lasting only a few hours and culminate with a full 3-day solo towards the end of your course. Many of our past students express solo as one of the most powerful elements to their course. This activity may be abbreviated or eliminated if instructors determine the weather, terrain, or other factors could make a solo unsafe. Service Service is an integral part of the Outward Bound curriculum. Doing service unto others and the environment is part of our values that encourage people to be the best they can be. We encourage service to the environment in the form of leaving campsites cleaner than we find them and practicing Leave No Trace ethics throughout the course. We coordinate service projects with land managers (US Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service, local land trusts, etc.) as well as with select social service agencies (nursing homes, hospitals, organic farms, etc.). Expect several days set aside to work directly with one of these organizations. Town Day While in the Bay Area, there will be an opportunity to have some free time in San Francisco. The Town day is meant to provide you with time to clean up, do laundry, check and contact friends and family while simultaneously preparing for the last and final phase of your course. You will gain a behind the scenes perspective of what it takes to operate an organization like Outward Bound and meet the staff who support our programs. Students will be heavily involved in the planning process of their final section and help with packing food and gear for the last sections of the course. Mountaineering - Mountaineering expeditions move through high mountain terrain, typically above tree line. The Sierras are not known for heavy snow in summer but if conditions indicate, you will carry and receive training in snow travel and the use of ice axes. The mountaineering section offers more extensive skills training and students develop higher competency so that you can explore more rugged and challenging terrain. Your instructors will also prepare you for one or more technical peak attempts. Depending on the skill level of the group, the weather, and other factors, your team may attempt a peak that requires ropes, technical equipment, and rock climbing to ascend. This will likely be the most physically demanding sections of your semester, but you will travel to places very few people have gone. By this point in course, your instructors will be stepping back and taking more of a coaching role in order to provide the group with more autonomy and decision-making opportunities. Final Expedition Outward Bound believes that an appropriate amount of independence is a powerful educational tool. In order to deliver that benefit, our instructors purposefully and gradually transfer certain leadership responsibilities to the students culminating with a Final Expedition. Near the end of course, if you and your group have demonstrated the necessary leadership, team problem-solving and wilderness living skills, you may be given the opportunity to travel without your instructors immediately present. You will receive a two-way radio or satellite phone as a means to communicate with your instructors. This is your 65 Day Instructor Semester Itinerary Page: 4 7 Outward Bound Updated 07/2015
opportunity to demonstrate all of the skills you have acquired in the previous weeks. Final Expedition can last for one to five days, depending on staff assessment of students abilities. Many of our students feel this phase of the course is the most rewarding, as the group learns to work together, problem solve, and accomplish a goal independently, while utilizing all the skills they have acquired. Practicum Here is where you will apply all that you have learned through the entire Semester. You will have an opportunity to facilitate an overnight experience for a group of local students and test your skills as an Outdoor Educator. You will focus on lesson design and delivery, curriculum progressions, and the behind-the-scenes logistics that go into delivering a day of programming. Personal Challenge Event Outward Bound courses typically end with a Personal Challenge Event a final, individual, physical effort. This might take the form of a run or a triathlon-style challenge. Expect to participate in a 6 to 12-mile run. Final Days In preparation for your travel back home, the second-to-last afternoon of your course will be spent de-issuing and cleaning all Outward Bound gear followed by a special meal and graduation ceremony. Simple backcountry showers will be offered. Departure from the trailhead will be between 6am and 8am. Sample Itinerary The following is an example of what your itinerary may look like.
