Trip Notes Trip Code: AOX Countries: Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand Amended: October 2013 Edition No: MRD Valid from: 01 Jan - 31 Dec 2014 THAI INDOCHINA EXPLORER HIGHLIGHTS Experience three distinctly different countries in two weeks Overnight in the Mekong Delta at a homestay Visit the moving Killing Fields of Cambodia Explore the world famous Angkor complex Visit the Royal Palace complex and Wat Phra Kaew, the home of the Emerald Buddha in Bangkok Crawl through the Cu Chi war tunnels Experience mouth-watering cuisine SUMMARY Visiting Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand in two weeks, this exciting trip offers a fascinating way to experience the diversity of South East Asia. Our journey starts in Vietnam and the bustling Ho Chi Minh City, formerly known as Saigon. The city operates at an incredible pace with brightly coloured taxis and auto rickshaws competing for space on the streets and boulevards with the masses of motorbikes and bicycles that are so much a part of South East Asian life. Despite nearly three decades of communist rule the city still retains a colonial feel with the architecture and city layout distinctively French. Leaving the city we travel into the spiritual heartland of South Vietnam, the Mekong Delta. Staying on a small island in the middle of the Mekong River, we spend the night in a small guesthouse built in the style of a local family home. We traverse the myriad of interlinking waterways and little bridges, which provide a unique and fascinating atmosphere. Leaving Vietnam we journey to Cambodia stopping at Kampot then on to the coastal beach resort of Sihanoukville before driving to the capital Phnom Penh. Immortalised by Hollywood, visits to the infamous 'killing fields' and genocide museum are a moving and unforgettable experience, but the city has much more to offer including the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda. Home to a lost civilisation, the magnificent temple complex at Angkor, the world's largest religious construction in stone, stands testament to the former power of the Khmer empire. The amazing temples and statues are in a constant struggle with the surrounding jungle. The Ta Phrom temple exemplifies this with large trees embedding themselves in the stone foundations of the structure. We fly to the bustling and buzzing city of Bangkok, a great chance to pick up some fantastic souvenirs at the many shops and markets. South East Asia is home to some incredible cuisine with colourful markets, fresh seafood and exotic curries providing a mouthwatering array at meal times. The delicious cuisine is a treasure of this fascinating region. IS THIS TRIP FOR YOU? This holiday is designed so that you can see the best parts of South East Asia using a mixture of private buses, trains and flights. There is a lot to see in the time you are there, but it is paced so that it doesn't feel too rushed. Travel time is kept to a minimum although there are a few longer drives but there is plenty of time for sightseeing and the trip has numerous stops where we spend 2 or more nights. LAND ONLY ITINERARY The entries in bold at the end of each day indicate the type of accommodation normally used (if different standards of accommodation are used - see accommodation section below for key to codes), and meals included (B=Breakfast, L=Lunch, D=Dinner). 2 After driving approximately 1 hour to the Tinh Bien/Phnom Den land border we will bid farewell to Vietnam and cross into Cambodia. Our drive takes us via the former French colonial town of Kampot to Sihanoukville, Cambodia's premier beach resort. Upon arrival you will have free time to relax, refresh with a swim, try a Khmer beach massage and sip cocktails as the sun sets. For those who like to cook, there's also an opportunity to join a half day traditional Khmer cooking class (optional). CH (B) Day 6 (Day 7 Ex London) Free day Our hotel is located across the road from the white sands of Ochheuteal Beach and today you will have free time to relax on the beach or wander into town and get a feel for the place. A boat trip out to one of the deserted islands off the coast for fishing, snorkelling and swimming is recommended (optional). The more energetic can also rent bicycles to explore more of the Sihanoukville beaches and countryside. CH (B) Day 7 (Day 8 Ex London) To Phnom Penh; free afternoon This morning we drive around the peninsula past Sokha, Independence and Victory beaches before driving on to Phnom Penh. The afternoon is free to explore this city that still retains a frontier atmosphere. There is time to wander among the traditional buildings, or shop at either the impressive Central Market or the sprawling Russian Market, a souvenir hunter's paradise. CH (B) Day 8 (Day 9 Ex London) Phnom Penh full day sightseeing Day 1 (Day 2 Ex London) Start Saigon The day is free to recover from the flight. Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), formerly known as Saigon an exciting and absorbing city where bicycles battle with lorries and temples stand defiantly alongside modern developments. Devastated by the Vietnam War, Saigon is now a bustling free market city where anything goes. The Ben Thanh Market and Notre Dame Cathedral are within easy walking distance from our hotel and are highly recommended. CH Day 2 (Day 3 Ex London) Visit Cu Chi Tunnels and afternoon tour of Saigon This morning we leave the city behind us and head west to visit the Cu Chi Tunnels. Used by the Viet Cong during the war the network covers 3 levels and approximately 240 kms of tunnels. Traditionally these were very narrow but some areas have been widened to allow tourists to explore the system. Claustrophobes may prefer to stay outside in the sunshine! In the afternoon we return to Saigon for a tour to include visits to the Reunification Palace and War Remnants Museum where there is an interesting record of the Vietnam/American War. Some of the images are of a graphic nature. CH (B) Day 3 (Day 4 Ex London) To the Mekong Delta We drive to Cai Be in the Mekong Delta via a Cao Dai temple used by devotees of this strange indigenous religion that fuses all the great religions of the east and west. The Mekong is locally known as the rice bowl of Vietnam and produces much of Vietnam's fruit, sugar cane and coconuts. En route we pass magnificent countryside and stop at some small cottage industries. We take a relaxing sampan cruise in the afternoon and arrive at our accommodation. The evening is tranquil as we have dinner on an Island and enjoy some 'Delta' hospitality. We spend the night sleeping at a simple guesthouse built in the style of a local house. Bedding, a mosquito net and a small towel are provided. SH (B, D) We will visit the beautiful Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda inside the Palace complex, so named for the solid silver tiles that make up the floor. Thankfully the complex escaped the worst excess of the Khmer Rouge. Similar in style and scale to the Grand Palace in Bangkok, the Royal Palace has significantly fewer visitors and there is plenty of time to wander amongst the traditional buildings. We will also visit Tuol Sleng museum or S21 (Museum of Genocide), which graphically displays the horrors of the 4 years when Pol Pot systematically ordered the murder of between 2 and 3 million Cambodians. Tuol Sleng was originally a school but was used as a torture and interrogation centre between 1975 and It is a sobering, but enlightening place to visit. We complete our day with a moving late afternoon visit to the 'killing fields' of Choeung Ek. A football-field-sized area surrounded by farmland, the killing fields contain mass graves for perhaps 20,000 Cambodians, many of whom were tortured before being killed. Phnom Penh is a city in transition and, despite its horrific recent history, it is now starting to find its feet. Some of its former French colonial buildings have been restored and there is a small but lively restaurant and bar scene developing along the riverfront. CH (B) Day 9 (Day 10 Ex London) To Siem Reap This morning we take our bus along National Road 6 past the village of Skuon (where fried spiders are the local delicacy) before continuing on to Kompong Thom for a lunch stop, then on to Siem Reap. CH (B) Day 10 (Day 11 Ex London) Angkor A full day spent exploring the complex. We will visit the incredible Angkor Wat, the many temples inside the Royal City of Angkor Thom, including the magnificent Bayon, which comprises of 54 intricately carved towers in one single temple. The Bayon certainly left an impression on an early traveller in 1925 who stated 'we stand before Day 4 (Day 5 Ex London) Mekong Delta & Sam Mountain for sunset This morning we take a short walk around the surrounding village to uncover the daily lives of the people. We board our boats once again and cross the main channel to Vinh Long where we re-join our vehicle for the drive further into the Mekong Delta to the small border town of Chau Doc. After checking into the hotel we will enjoy a sunset visit to the top of the holy Sam Mountain with views stretching across into Cambodia. The evening is free to wander around this town, situated on the banks of the Mekong River. SH (B) Day 5 (Day 6 Ex London) Into Cambodia & Sihanoukville 2

it stunned. It is like nothing else in the land.' We will also see other less-visited outlying temples. Particularly impressive are Banteay Kdei and Ta Prohm, which is still covered in jungle as it was first found. Re-discovered in the 1870s and famously described as being 'grander than anything of Greece or Rome' by the French explorer Henri Mouchot, this world heritage site stands alongside Chichen Itza and Machu Picchu as one of the world's most spectacular archaeological sites. A truly magical experience and a photographer's paradise. One evening we will make our way to watch the sunset over this magnificent scene. CH (B) Day 11 (Day 12 Ex London) Angkor This morning we will continue our exploration of the Angkor complex with a visit to the small but charming Temple of Banteay Srei, which is noted for the intricacy of its carvings, 35km from Siem Reap town. Our route takes us past paddy fields, and through pretty villages. Banteay Srei was built in the 10th century and contains some of the finest examples of Khmer sculpture. Although much smaller than the later temples, here all of the buildings are covered in exquisite carvings. The afternoon is free for you to continue with further independent exploration of the temples or to wander around Siem Reap town or visit a floating fishing village and enjoy a boat trip on the Tonle Sap Lake (optional). CH (B) CH Comfortable Hotel, Lodge or Gite - twin rooms with en suite facilities, reliable electricity and water supply, good service and some added amenities. SH Standard Hotel, Lodge or Gite - no-frills hotel, usually with twin rooms and en suite facilities. Service and amenities are generally adequate. FOOD & TRANSPORT Food Food is cheap in South East Asia and you can generally avoid the spicier food if you wish. Western food is readily available almost everywhere, with the exception of the night in the Mekong Delta. Transport We use a private coach/mini-buses. Most of the driving days are not long, usually no more than four hours, with a couple of days taking five to six hours. Road conditions are fine in Vietnam and Thailand but generally not so good in Cambodia but improving all the time, and progress can be slow there. WEATHER AND SEASONALITY Day 12 (Day 13 Ex London) Fly to Bangkok & city tour We transfer to the airport in Siem Reap for our short flight to Bangkok. This afternoon we take a short walk to the Chao Praya river where we board a long tail boat for a tour of the local canals. Bangkok was once known as the Venice of the East because of its intricate canal network. We get a glimpse of daily life as we pass locals selling their wares by the river. We will visit what to this day remains the home of the Thai Royal family at the Royal Palace complex followed by Wat Phra Kaew, home to the Emerald Buddha, one of Thailand's most venerated images. Another highlight is Wat Po, the largest temple in Bangkok, housing a 46m long, 15m high gold-plated reclining Buddha. Flight time dependent we may go straight to visit the temples from the airport so we suggest that you wear suitable temple attire for the flight/pack appropriate clothing that you can easily change into. CH (B) Day 13 (Day 14 Ex London) Free day Today is free in Bangkok for shopping, sightseeing, relaxing or maybe to try a Thai massage! Your tour leader will be more than happy to advise you on how best to use your time. CH (B) Day 14 (Day 15 Ex London) End Bangkok (B) For those on group flights, these depart in the afternoon and will arrive in the UK the following day. ACCOMMODATION 12 nights comfortable hotels, all en suite, 1 night standard guesthouse to experience some 'Mekong Delta' hospitality, sleeping 1-3 a room (depending on group size), next to a local house. Most of the accommodation on this trip is in good quality private hotels (mostly 3-star) but you should also be prepared for less facilities at border towns and away from the cities. All of the hotels have either fans or air conditioning and we will normally have twin rooms with private facilities. Single Accommodation: Single rooms are available except during the night in the village homestay for a supplement, please enquire for prices. Please advise the sales team at the time of booking if you require a single. Extra Accommodation: Is available in Saigon before your trip and in Bangkok after, please ask for prices. Due to high demand for rooms there is a chance it may be in a different hotel to the start of your trip. KEY TO ACCOMMODATION: We indicate in the itinerary what type of accommodation is provided on each day. The descriptions are guidelines only and are used to give an idea of the accommodation offered, rather than an exact description. The weather will be hot and humid throughout with temperatures during the day between about 28ºC and 34ºC but at times is may reach 40ºC. It is only a little cooler at nights. The region is mostly dry between December to April and then a rainy season from May to November when it tends to come in short heavy bursts with bright sunshine in between. In Cambodia the weather will be hot and humid all year round. The dry season is late October to May and the monsoon is normally between June and September; though there is an obvious transitional time between those settled periods. The dry season is as it sounds, with hot days and generally clear skies, though you can expect the odd shower. The monsoon is characterised by short, sharp bursts of 3

rain and is generally overcast all day, though this does not detract from the enjoyment of the place; you just need to take an umbrella! In Thailand the weather patterns are very similar to Cambodia and you should expect year round temperatures from 23-35ºC. The rainy season will normally run from June to September when you should expect short sharp showers but the sun will normally break through. Free Transfers Exodus offers FREE airport arrival and departure transfers on any flight for this trip, so no matter which flight you choose to arrive on you will be met and transferred to your hotel. All those taking advantage of the free airport transfers must provide full flight details for both arrival and departure in advance; unless specified otherwise, the transfer will be to the Exodus start (or pre-tour) hotel; transfers to other hotels in the same city may attract an extra charge; transfers may be shared with other Exodus customers on the same flight, or on a flight with similar arrival times. The cost of a taxi is likely to be about 5/$8 should you decide to make your way independently. Full joining instructions including local emergency numbers will be sent to you as part of our Final Joining Instructions. If you do not receive these at least a week before departure, or require them earlier please contact our office or your travel agent. RESPONSIBLE TOURISM Tourism can be a real help to local communities, providing income, positive cultural exchanges and a financial incentive to protect their natural environment. Ours is a 'total approach' to responsible tourism, covering everything from the way we plan and operate our trips to the practices of Exodus as a company. There will be the opportunity to eat for a good cause at either Sala Bai or Green Gecko restaurants in Siem Reap, and KOTO restaurant in Saigon all of which train under-privileged young Vietnamese or Cambodians and provide street children with vocational training and general education to allow them to find a job in the tourism industry. JOINING THE TRIP IN THE UK 16 days, normally depart London Sat, return Sun Itinerary Start The group flight from London is an overnight flight departing the day before Day 1 of the itinerary. Flights from London We normally use the scheduled services of Malaysian Airlines (depending on availability). As flight timings and schedules change regularly we recommend you call one of our specialist sales staff or your agent to confirm up-to-date timings. Please note timings may change at a later date and cannot be confirmed until approximately two weeks before departure. Internal flights during the trip are with a local airline. UK Regional Flights The Flight Inclusive price is based on a London departure, but we are happy to tailor this to your local or regional airport. Please visit for a useful overview of the options available, and contact our sales team for expert advice. If booking regional flights other than with Exodus, you must allow a minimum connecting time (in addition to the international check in time) of 1 hour at Gatwick, and 1½ hours at Heathrow; this is longer than the official minimum, but baggage handling is known to be subject to delays. Free Transfers Exodus offers free airport arrival and departure transfers on any flight for this trip: please see the Free Transfers section below for more details. JOINING THE TRIP IN SAIGON 14 days, normally start Saigon Sun, end Bangkok Sat Itinerary Start Your trip normally starts at our hotel in Saigon in the afternoon of Day 1 of the itinerary. Details of how to reach the start point are provided in the Final Joining Instructions - sent approximately two weeks before departure. For full details of our Responsible Tourism Policy please visit: PRACTICAL INFORMATION Passports and Visas All nationalities require a full passport that must be valid for 6 months beyond the intended length of stay. It is your responsibility to have the correct personal documents and to obtain your own visa, if one is necessary, in accordance with the regulations of the country you are to visit. The information below is primarily for UK passport holders, and other nationalities should check with their travel agent or the relevant embassies. We are not responsible for the actions of local immigration and customs officials, whether at points of entry or otherwise, and any subsequent effects. Vietnam Nearly all nationalities require a visa to enter Vietnam, and this must be obtained prior to departure. For further information see Cambodia A visa can be obtained on arrival for British nationals. One passport photo required. The cost is US$20, although an additional express fee of US$5-6 may be incurred at the border. For further information see Cambodia.pdf Thailand A visa for Thailand is not required for British nationals for stays of 30 days or less. If you are unsure of the requirements please check with your nearest Thai embassy. Visa regulations can change without notice: please check the current regulations in good time to obtain a visa if one is required. Vaccinations and Health Travel health can often be something people forget about before going away, but a little preparation and knowledge can go a long way to help you stay fit and healthy while abroad. There are no mandatory vaccination requirements for this trip. Recommended vaccinations for this trip are: Polio, Tetanus, Diphtheria, Typhoid, Hepatitis A. Malaria prophylaxis is essential on this trip, and we suggest that you seek advice from your GP or travel health clinic about which malaria tablets to take. 4

Although local currency is preferred, US dollars are widely accepted. In practice the economy of Cambodia as far as the visitor is concerned, runs mainly on US dollars. We recommend bringing at least half of your money in dollars cash in mixed denominations, with plenty of smaller notes. Dengue fever is a known risk in places visited on this trip. It is a tropical viral disease spread by daytime biting mosquitoes. There is currently no vaccine or prophylaxis available for Dengue, and therefore the best form of prevention is to avoid being bitten. We recommend you take the usual precautions to avoid mosquito bites. The above information can change at short notice; as we are not qualified to answer all your questions about travel health we strongly recommend you contact your Medical Professional or a Travel Health Clinic at least 8 weeks prior to departure for up-to-date information. Insurance - are you adequately covered? You must have adequate travel insurance, and if you are joining a trip which goes to high altitude, you must check that you are covered up to the maximum altitude of the trip. If you are resident in the UK we strongly recommend Exodus travel insurance, which is specifically designed to cover all activities on your trip. If you are a UK citizen and travelling in Europe you should obtain the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) from your Post Office. This gives free medical care in many European countries, but should not be considered a substitute for adequate insurance. Local Time GMT + 7 Hrs Group, Staff and Support The group will generally be between 6 and 16 people. There will be a local leader and drivers and local guides where needed. The trip is lead by locally qualified Vietnamese and Cambodian English-speaking leaders. The minimum age of clients on this trip is 16 years. Please note that anyone aged under 18 must be accompanied by (and share accommodation with) a parent or legal guardian. Safety in Phnom Penh ATM availability/credit Card Acceptance/Travellers cheques ATMs are now widespread in SE Asia's cities and are the easiest way of obtaining money. ATMS in Cambodia dispense money in US dollars or Cambodian Riel. There is a minimum 150 baht fee for all ATM transactions in Thailand. Credit card acceptance is now widespread in cities in SE Asia at restaurants and shops catering for tourists. As you will probably be carrying much of your money in cash, we strongly recommend using a money belt. Travellers cheques can now be changed in the main cities only although this is usually time consuming, and these can be in dollars or sterling, although dollars will generally receive a better exchange rate. Extra Expenses and Spending Money You should need about 15-20/$25-32 per day for all other meals, which will allow you to eat well. Apart from the food, you should allow money for the Cambodia visa and money to cover soft drinks (more if you like a beer) and souvenirs. Optional Excursions (approximate costs, depending on group sizes) Sihanoukville Bike hire 2/$3 Island boat trip 15/$24 Khmer cooking class 15/$24 Siem Reap boat trip on the Tonle Sap Lake 7/$12 depending upon numbers Tipping (leader and local staff) This is entirely at your own discretion however; we suggest that you allow a few pounds for tips for the local guides and staff. In the countries visited, with the increase in tourism, tipping has become customary. The local staff will probably expect some gratuity and we suggest you allow for this. The leader will suggest to the group that they donate a sum of 25/$40 per person towards a kitty on arrival. This money is then used for tipping of local guides, hotel porters, drivers etc. It is basically to ensure that the hassle is taken out of various activities for you. If you do not wish to contribute to a central pool for tips you are of course free to do so. If you feel that your leader has performed well over the course of your trip, you may want to show your appreciation of their services. The sum you choose to give is entirely personal, but as a guide, 2/$3 per person per day would be a reasonable starting point. The 'tipping kitty' explained above is entirely separate from any contribution to the tour leader. Our local staff are paid well and fairly for their work with Exodus. It is important to exercise caution in Phnom Penh after dark. Taking into account the following recommendations, as well as the advice of your leader will help to ensure that you have a safe and enjoyable trip. Always leave valuables and important documents secured in the safe in your hotel, carrying only the money you need for one day and a copy of your passport with you. Do not make yourself a target for pickpockets by keeping cameras and jewellery on display. After dark avoid walking in the streets alone. If staying in a bar or restaurant until late, ask them to call you a taxi rather than walking back to the hotel; transport in Phnom Penh is inexpensive. MONEY MATTERS Currency Information The national currency of Vietnam is the Vietnamese Dong (VND), with an exchange rate of to the UK and to the US$. The national currency of Cambodia is the Cambodian Riel (KHR), with an exchange rate of 6395 to the UK and 4080 to the US$. The national currency of Thailand is the Thai Baht (THB), with an exchange rate of 48 to the UK and 30 to the US$. Exchange rates are correct at the time of publication. WHAT TO TAKE Essential Equipment and Clothing Casual clothes. As it is generally hot and humid, light cotton clothing is recommended for most of the trip. We recommend you bring a torch. Please remember that you will be expected to cover your legs 5

and arms (to the elbow) during visits to some temples and palaces. Sandals are useful as they are cooler and are easier to take off when visiting temples. Optional items: A sheet sleeping bag for the Mekong delta home stay (a sleeping bag is not required for this trip). A sun hat and suncream are recommended, torch, a swimming costume will be well used, and a lightweight waterproof jacket or an umbrella. Baggage and Baggage Allowance At time of writing the standard weight limit for hold baggage on the recommended international carrier for this trip is 20kg. We recommend packing only one piece of checked baggage. As advice about luggage allowances for both hand and hold luggage is subject to change, we suggest you check and/or the airline's website for the latest information prior to your departure.
