Lists are the key to proper preparation when planning a family vacation. ListPlanIt has all the lists you could possibly need to prepare for an upcoming trip or vacation. Members can browse our selection of lists, choose the list they need, edit it the way that makes sense for themselves and their families, and come back to the list again and again as needed. Not yet a member? Join today and get organized for for a fun family vacation. Here are some lists to get you started with your vacation planning. TRAVEL EPLANNER 5
1- Month Countdown (Time Management) Keep track important names and contact information in case of emergencies, for convenience, or to group similar people together. Travel Budget Worksheet (Financial Planning) Don t make assumptions about the cost of travel, do the math! Assign an average to each night s stay or meals eaten and multiply it times the number of days or nights you ll be traveling. Stay on budget while traveling. Accommodations Planner (Travel Planning) Plan and organize your stay in a hotel, lodge, for a vacation or for business travel. Don t search for the details. Plug them in here in this list and be ready. Sightseeing Planner (Travel Planning) Make sure you see all the sights before you head back home. Use this page to list the must- sees to include on your itinerary. Packing List by Category (Travel Planning) Keep this list handy as you think of things to take on your trip or vacation. Check off each item as it goes into your suitcase. Itinerary (Travel Planning) - Use this list to chart the details of your next vacation. TRAVEL EPLANNER 6
List of Steps for Packing a Suitcase for Travel Packing a suitcase for travel can be instrumental in the success of your trip. If you are over- packed, you will despise lugging your luggage around from place to place. Taking steps to protect your luggage will save you inevitable stress and confusion at a time when you should be relaxing and enjoying life. Here are some ideas to get you started. Use a Packing List. Put it on paper before you exert any energy gathering things. Your packing list will guide you in the process and prevent you from forgetting anything important think passport or cell phone. (Check off your items when you use one of our Packing Lists.) Choose Items Wisely. Look closely at Weather.com before packing. Be realistic TRAVEL EPLANNER 7
about what you will likely wear. Will you have access to a washer and dryer? If so, don t be afraid to do a load or two of laundry. Find a Good Method. If you are looking to pack efficiently with less wrinkling, then simply laying folded clothing into your suitcase will not work. Here are 2 common methods used by heavy travelers. 1) Rolling Method I packed for 4 people in one suitcase. Rolling conserves space, and things come out pretty wrinkle- free. See photo above. 2) Bundle Wrapping My Mom and husband believe that this is the best method. You can find out more here. Toiletries and Shoes. These can be difficult items to pack. They are both potentially bulky and threaten to damage your clothing, if not packed correctly. 1) Shoes Wear the bulkiest of your shoes on the plane. I have a shoe bag that I can pack my shoes in. Then I always pack it at the bottom of my suitcase (the bottom if the suitcase is zipped and sitting up). 2) Toiletries I also pack my toiletries in a separate bag, both to keep them together and to prevent leakage. I pack this at the top of my suitcase (the top if the suitcase is zipped and sitting up). Personalize your Luggage. Most people put a tag on their luggage with their name, address, and telephone number on it. However, with so many pieces of solid- colored luggage nowadays, one way to spy your luggage immediately as it comes down the belt at the airport is to tie a brightly- colored ribbon or scrap of fabric onto your handle. When you see that fabric, you ll have no doubt that that is your luggage. A less- obvious way to personalize your luggage and to ensure that your bag finds its way to you in the slim chance that it gets lost is to write down all important information and place it on the top of your packed stuff inside before you zip it up. Include your name(s), your home address/phone number, and the address/phone number(s) of your travel destination. TRAVEL EPLANNER 8
Things to Remember Before Leaving Home for a Vacation When I am getting ready for a big trip, my mind is full of things to remember like packing my daughter s blanket, buying fun snacks for the plane, putting wet wipes in the glove compartment, checking with my husband so see if he packed what he needs (on our last trip he packed his own suitcase and when we arrived at our 100 degree destination, realized he had forgotten to pack any shorts!!). In all of this mindfulness of what I need to remember to BRING, I often forget what I need to do at home before we leave. Here are a few things for your to do list before travel. Put your mail on hold. It is super easy to do online now at the United States Postal Service website. Just enter your dates to be held and decide whether you will pick it up or have it all delivered the day you come home. TRAVEL EPLANNER 9
Suspend your newspaper delivery. Or arrange for a neighbor to pick it up Arrange for your pets. Do you need to call the kennel to reserve a place for your dog? Could a neighbor come in every few days and feed your cat? We use a Vacation Feeder in our fish tank so they have food the whole time we are away Use a timer for your lights. You can set your lights on timer so it appears that someone is at home each night. Reacquaint yourself with your landline telephone s remote access procedure and passcode. Many phones have the capability to allow you to retrieve messages by calling in from another phone Pay bills. Make sure you know if any bills are due while you are away and pay for them ahead of time or set them up for a scheduled payment. Lock all door and windows. Seems like a no- brainer, but it is still something to add to your to- do list. Turn your heat or air conditioning and adjust your water heater settings. Unplug all electric devices. Remember TVs, stereos, computers, and alarm clocks. Remove perishable food from your refrigerator. TRAVEL EPLANNER 10
