Las Alpujarras CAPILEIRA
WELCOME TO Capileira The Alpujarra, southern Spain, is an area of high mountains and deep valleys lying on the sunny southern edge of the Sierra Nevada. Recognised as a Parque National, Parque Natural and an environmentally and historically protected area, it has championed the promotion of sustainable tourism. With an average elevation of 1,200 metres (4,000ft) the region offers spectacular walking and views of the snow-capped Sierra Nevada. Mulhacen at 3,479m is the highest mountain in mainland Spain and snow remains for most of the year. Snow melt in spring and summer allows the southern slopes of the Alpujarra to remain green and fertile throughout the year. The Romans and later the Moors constructed acequias, channels which bring snow melt and water from the aquifer deep beneath the Sierra to irrigate the vegetable plots and fruit trees. The area now houses a large proportion of north Europeans alongside locals. Both groups have worked hard to preserve those features that make the Alpujarras such a special place to visit. Our hotel lies in the delightful village of Capileira, which at 1,436 m is the highest in the Poqueira valley. It is one of the most important centres for walking in the Alpujarras, with a range of accommodation and local amenities. From here we can explore the Moorish culture of the Berbers, who inhabited this area from the 8th century. Our walks take us alongside acequias (irrigation channels )that once watered the terraces, through white-washed villages, past old fincas or farms, and along steep mule tracks to view spectacular mountain panoramas. This is a region extolled by Chris Stewart in his bestselling book Driving Over Lemons and by Gerald Brenan in South From Granada. 2 Call or visit hfholidays.co.uk

Guided Walking Easier Walks: 5 to 8 miles (8-13km) on good paths with some rocky sections. Up to 1,500ft (450m) of ascent in a day. ITINERARY A unique feature of our Guided Walking holidays is the daily choice of walks. Each evening your leaders will give a short talk about the options for the next day and answer any questions you may have. In Capileira you ll have a choice of two guided walks on each walking day. The cost of transport to and from your walks each day is included in the cost of your holiday. Harder Walks: 7 to 10 miles (11-16km) on good paths with some rocky sections. Up to 2,300ft (690m) of ascent in a day. Please note that the itinerary outlined below is provisional and may be subject to change. For the most up to date information, please check our website. A finalised itinerary will be available at the resort and your leaders will talk every evening about the next day s walks. Day 1: Arrival day On arrival at Capileira, you will have time to meet your fellow guests over the first evening meal. Day 2: Pena del Angel Berme Gorge Today's walks will take us to the ridge to the east and south of Capileira. Both walks start on the quiet road climbing out of the village that offers magnificent views over the valley. 4 Call or visit hfholidays.co.uk Easier Walk: Our walk heads east from the village to a mirador, with fine views over the Poqueira Valley. We then branch off on a good track to walk the length of the ridge to the south and east of Capileira, passing close by the rock formation of the Pena Del Angel. At the southern end of the promontory there is a spectacular view over the valleys below. We then follow the GR 7 down to the village of Bubion, situated below Capileira. Here there may be a stop for lunch or a drink before ascending through fields back to Capileira. 5 miles (8km) with 800 ft (240m) of ascent and descent.
Call or visit hfholidays.co.uk 5
Harder Walk: Having set out with the easier party, we head off to ascend higher above the ridge, initially following the GR 142 long distance path. A good track with extensive views takes us to the spectacular gorge and waterfalls of the Rio Bermejo. We then descend steeply towards Pitres, before taking a level track westwards. Crossing the Barranco de Sangre, the site of an infamous battle between Moors and Christians, we ascend to the ridge traversed by the easier party, and follow their route on the GR 7 down to Bubion and then on a field path to Capileira. 9 miles (14.5km) with 1,700ft (510m) of ascent. Day 3: Around Soportujar We start with a drive to the western side of the Alpujarras and enjoy a view of Lanjaron, famous for its spring water and spectacularly sited castle. Easier Walk: This group are transported to Canar, high above Orgiva. After a coffee stop, we follow a path to Soportujar, famed centre for witches. The path becomes more wooded, and deeper in the Poquiera Gorge. 6 miles (9.5km) with 700ft (210m) of ascent. Harder Walk: This walk continues from the viewpoint ascending into the hills above the town before contouring round to Canar. A descent to a bar and viewpoint to Pampaniera ends with a rest to await transport back to the hotel. 9 miles (14.5km) with 1,300ft (390m) of ascent. Day 4: Highest village in Spain Today both groups will visit Trevelez, claimed to be the highest village on the Iberian Peninsula. It is one of the main centres for the production of air dried Serrano ham. Easier Walk: We ascend through the extensive village of Trevelez, comprised of three separate barrios, bajo, medio and alto. We then pick up the GR7/E4 footpath along a terrace on a broad gravel road high above the valley. Looking back, we can see the village with high hills beyond, whilst to the side is the deep Trevelez River valley. We continue contouring round the hillside before turning south east, and descending to the village of Busquistar. There should be time to explore the village and enjoy a welcome drink before meeting our transport back to Capileira. 7 miles (11km) with 1,400ft (420m) of ascent. Harder Walk: This follows the same route as the easier walk as far as Busquistar. From here our route continues further down the Trevelez Valley, crossing several barrancos and walking through the little hamlet of Albeitar before ascending to finish in the main square of the larger village of Pitres. Here there will be a chance for a drink in one of the bars before our transport collects us for the short journey back to the hotel. 10 miles (16km) with 1,900ft (570m) of ascent. 6 Call or visit hfholidays.co.uk

Day 5: Free day Each week there is a free day when no guided walks are offered. This is an ideal opportunity to relax around the hotel, swim in the pool, walk independently or visit local places of interest. Options include\; visiting Sierra Nevada where you can have a drink in a refuge or even ascend Mulhacen, the highest mountain in mainland Spain. Visit the nearby village of Bubion and try pony trekking or a craft day, learning how to make an Alpujarran rug. Your leader has full details. Day 6: Sierra de Mecina and the Trevelez Gorge Today a short coach ride takes us to la Taha, an area of seven villages that once offered allegiance to the Nasrid Kings of Granada. Even today they are characterised by their distinctive Berber architecture. We start both walks at Fondales, the lowest of the seven villages in the Trevelez Valley. Our walks take us along the Sierra de Mecina which marks the southern border of the main Alpujarras region. Both walks have spectacular winding mule tracks or panjuila that take us into the Trevelez Gorge. Easier Walk: We start from the tiny village of Fondales and descend to cross the Trevelez River, near an old mill. From here we pick up an old mule trail, the Camino Real, that follows the river before ascending steadily to reach a broader track high above the valley. This track contours through woodland on the north slope of the Sierra de Mecina. A spectacular and steep, but well engineered mule track or panjuila then winds down to cross the Trevelez Gorge, before ascending more gently to the white village of Ferrierola. After tasting the remarkable sparkling waters of La Fuenta Gaseosa, we take the winding road to our finishing point in the tiny village of Mecina. 7 miles (11km) with 1,800ft (540m) of ascent. Harder Walk: Our route follows the easier walk but on reaching the track along the Sierra de Mecina there is an optional extension to visit an old cisterna/ice house and a spectacular viewpoint over Orgiva. After contouring along the Sierra de Mecina we continue for a short distance along a quiet road before descending an old iron ore quarry on a spectacular winding path into the Trevelez Gorge. On the north side of the valley we pass the outskirts of Busquistar before picking up the GR142 path to Ferrierola, where we will have the opportunity to sample the Fuenta Gaseosa. Refreshed by the naturally sparkling mineral water we then follow the winding road to our finishing point in Mecina. 9 miles (14.5km) with 2,300ft (690m) of ascent. Day 7: Cebadillas and the Poqueira Gorge Today both groups start and finish from our hotel, as we explore the delights of the Poqueira Valley. Easier Walk: Our walk ascends the east side of the Poquiera Valley as far as the deserted village of La Cebadilla, built in the 1950 s for the construction of the hydroelectric power station. Here the river is in a deep rocky gorge. The path from Capileira provides a magnificent panorama of the valley and also closely follows an acequia. These are the vital water channels that supply the villages and farmland with the water from the melting snows of the Sierra Nevada. Crossing the river, our route then passes through ancient farmland and terraces and descends on the western side of the valley as far as the bridge at Abu Buchite. A good, but steep track then leads back to the village of Capileira. 6 miles (9.5km) with 1,200ft (360m) of ascent. Harder Walk: We set off in the opposite direction to the easier walk, descending close to Bubion village before reaching Puente Molino. Our path crosses the river here for the first time and ascends on the western side of the valley before crossing the river again at Chiscar bridge. The path ascends and edges its way around a narrow gorge of the river, before descending again to Abu Buchite bridge. Crossing the river for a third time we follow the route used by the easier party in the reverse direction. The fourth river bridge crossing is at La Cebadilla, the hydroelectric plant built to supply the valley with electricity in the 1950 s. Returning to Capileira, we follow an acequia and enjoy the fabulous views of the valley and whitewashed villages as we descend to our hotel. 10 miles (16km) with 1,800ft (540m) of ascent. Day 8: Departure day In the evenings In Europe, our walking holidays continue into the evening. Enjoy a glass of wine or local beer whilst listening to your leaders outlining the next day s walk. You can join your group visiting a nearby bodega to sample some local produce. After a relaxing evening meal, you can take a walk in the village or enjoy a nightcap in the hotel bar. Call or visit hfholidays.co.uk 9
Your Walking Leaders: HF Holidays leaders are a pivotal feature of our walking holidays. During the day they will guide you on the walks in a caring and considerate way, showing you places of interest on the route. All our leaders have been selected on an intensive residential course so you can relax and enjoy your holiday knowing that you are in safe hands. Our leaders welcome your comments on the holiday survey; constructive suggestions are very helpful. We take pride in the quality of our holidays and work closely with all our providers to ensure our holidays meet your expectations. If for any reason you are not satisfied our leaders are the best people to help. Local interest guides: In some of our resorts we may employ the services of a local interest guide who will accompany you on a walk to enhance your enjoyment of the area by giving you an insight into its history and culture. Tips for local guides have not been included in the price of your holiday. This is at your own discretion and we invite you to do this directly with the local guide. Maps: Your leaders will of course carry all the maps and detailed walk instructions needed for the walks. The best map for the area is the Alpina map 40 Sierra Nevada 1:40,000 scale. Maps can be obtained by mail order from The Map Shop, Tel: or visit Children: We welcome unaccompanied children of 14 or over on our walks on the basis that they can take full responsibility for themselves. Children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult. WALKING SAFETY Hydration: In warm weather it is very important to keep hydrated. You will need to carry water with you on walks, more during hot weather or on more demanding walks. One good way of hydrating is to use a hydration pack which allows drinking without constant stopping. This can then be filled up from water sources as required. Insurance: Insurance is a condition of booking. Therefore if you have not already arranged insurance, it is imperative that you do so, and advise us of the insurance company and policy number. We have negotiated special holiday insurance and full details of this cover can be found in our brochure or at hfholidays.co.uk. There is no extra charge for preexisting illnesses. If you would like to purchase insurance from us please call us on or holidayservices@hfholidays.co.uk. Even with an EHIC card, medicines and out-patient treatment normally have to be paid for at the time and the costs reclaimed afterwards details are available at dh.gov.uk/travellers. Therefore insurance is extremely important, as is access to emergency money, preferably a credit card. 10 Call or visit hfholidays.co.uk WHAT TO WEAR & BRING To enjoy your walking comfortably and safely, it is essential that your footwear, clothing and equipment are suitable. Changeable weather is possible throughout the year, so our advice is to come prepared for all eventualities. You will need: comfortable outdoor clothing waterproof jacket and overtrousers ankle supporting footwear with non-slip soles small rucksack water bottle (at least 2 litres, more for hot climates) and a thermos flask if you wish sunhat, sun cream and sunglasses The following are recommended to all walkers, and are essential for mountainous and hilly areas: walking boots spare pullover or fleece hat and gloves spare high-energy food e.g. chocolate bar or Kendal mint cake torch You may also wish to consider bringing: walking pole(s) many guests find these useful, particularly for descents camera personal first aid kit Footwear: We recommend wearing walking boots on all our walks, as these provide the best ankle support and grip. Modern approach shoes offer appropriate levels of grip and may be worn on some low level walks, but users should be aware that they offer less ankle support. Lightweight trainers, denim jeans and waterproof capes are not recommended for any walks. HOLIDAY TIPS Language: Spanishn Currency: Euro Money: There is an ATM machine in Capileira where you can obtain money. Electricity: 220 Volt AC with round two pin plugs; you will need an adaptor for any appliances brought from the UK. Tap water: Is considered safe to drink, but if you prefer, bottled mineral water can be purchased from the hotel or local supermarkets. Telephone code: If the international number you wish to call starts with a 0, you must drop the starting digit when dialling the number. To dial a UK number 0044 To dial a Spanish number 0034
