7 4 Touring Suggestions The Famous Ring of Kerry As Ireland s most famous scenic drive, we recommend at least a 4 day trip to discover and experience this magnificent peninsula. At Castlecove, visit Ireland s largest circular stone fort, Staigue Fort. Next, the colourful village of Sneem, home to the Sculpture Park, Garden of the Senses and Kerry s GeoPark is a delightful village to spend some time. DAY 3 From Killarney, take the N72 to Killorglin where there are a variety of Outdoor Activity Centres. For cyclists, we recommend taking the Glencar route that will bring you along the mountainous spine of the peninsula taking in glacial lakes and mountain passes to the heart of the Iveragh Peninsula s Gaeltacht at Dromid (na Dromoda). DAY 1 From Killorglin to Glenbeigh, The Bog Village is an interesting visit and in Glenbeigh, take time for a pony trek along the beautiful Rossbeigh Beach. From Glenbeigh, the route will open up to wonderful views of Dingle Bay as you approach Kells, where the Victorian Gardens of Kells Bay are located. In Caherciveen, the history of the area can be discovered at the Old Barracks Heritage Centre. At Caherciveen Marina, enjoy a rib run, which offers a fun filled boat trip around Caherciveen Harbour and Valentia Lighthouse. Make Caherciveen your overnight stop or drive on to the beautiful fishing port of Portmagee or take the ferry to Valentia Island. Old Barracks Heritage Centre Valentia Island This region, called the Skellig Ring, is a place to linger. From Portmagee, the ferries leave for the spectacular Skellig Rocks, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Skellig Experience, located on Valentia Island, introduces you to this ancient heritage. The drive around Valentia Island is exhilarating. Stay left as you cross the bridge at Portmagee and stop to walk up to Bray Head and Geokaun Cliffs for amazing views. At the Slate Quarry, the views over Valentia Lighthouse and Knightstown are the icing on the cake! Take time to visit the Tetrapod Track and an eco tour around the harbour. 8 4 Touring Suggestions Alternatively, make your way down the coast and let the incredible fresh sea air overwhelm you at Ballyheigue Beach. This lovely drive will bring you through the villages of Ballyduff (which has a prime example of a perfectly preserved Round Tower at Rattoo) and Causeway. Just before Ballyheigue, we recommend a circular drive around the Kerry Head Peninsula with its scenic panoramas overlooking the Dingle Peninsula and Clare Coast. In Ballyheigue village, there is a charming 9 hole golf course, children s playground and glorious sand dunes or if you are in the mood for a super beach walk, Banna Beach joins Ballyheigue Beach and will leave you feeling exhilarated and refreshed. Ballybunion Rural Bliss of North Kerry Welcome to Kerry! If you have arrived by ferry across the River Shannon to Tarbert from Killimer in County Clare or have travelled down through Limerick, take your time and meander south taking the coast road to Tarbert, enjoying the wonderful rural countryside of North Kerry and the views of the Shannon Estuary. At the seaside resort of Ballybunion, have a round of golf at the legendary Ballybunion Links Course, stroll along the magnificent Ballybunion Beaches, relax in the traditional Seaweed Baths or get straight in to the surf of the Atlantic Ocean. With so much on its doorstep, Ballybunion might just be the place for an overnight stay. The R551 will take you along to Banna Beach and on to the village of Ardfert with its famous Cathedral and Monastic Ruins. From there, it is just a short drive in to Kerry s Capital, Tralee that is famous for its International August Festival, The Rose of Tralee. There are some notable visitor attractions and activities in Tralee and its surrounding areas the Kerry County Museum, the Aquadome, Siamsa Tíre, the national folk theatre of Ireland, Blennerville Windmill a working windmill and Exhibition Centre and Steam Train. This was also a major point of embarkation for the famine ships to the U.S. Locally, there are Equestrian Centres, the Blennerville Windmill striking underground limestone Crag Caves at Castleisland and just 13km west of Tralee, is the fishing and sailing port of Fenit with its extensive marina and annual regattas. Take time to visit St. Brendan, the Navigator's Statue, with its beautiful scenic views of the region. Stop at Listowel town and ramble around this lovely market town that is synonymous in Ireland for its literary masters John B. Keane, Bryan McMahon and George Fitzmaurice who are the foundation stones for Listowel Writer s Week held in May every year. Enjoy the high quality of local artisan food producers and if it s late in September, stay and enjoy the fun and lively atmosphere of the famous Listowel Races. Listowel Drive through the wonderful country lanes and roads and make your way to Ballybunion via the village of Ballylongford. This is the birthplace of one of Ireland s finest poets, Brendan Kennelly and also boasts the interesting Carrigafoyle Castle on the Shannon Estuary. Take the coast road to Ballybunion, enjoying the views of the Clare Fenit Marina coastline and the Loop Head Peninsula

9 4 Touring Suggestions The Magic of the Dingle Peninsula TripAdvisor travellers have voted the Dingle Peninsula a Top World Destination. Therefore we recommend at least 3 days to explore and experience this wonderful place. The Gateways of the Dingle Peninsula are, to the north, Blennerville, the N86 route from Tralee or to the south, Castlemaine (where archery and angling can be enjoyed), the N72/R561 from Killarney. From Tralee, drive west along the northern shores of the peninsula to the village of Camp and travel straight on towards the Conor Pass (Ireland s highest mountain pass). Take time to visit Castlegregory and The Maharees, taking in the stunning sand dunes and deserted beaches. Should you have time, enjoy some of the Water Sports that this area is renowned for and of course, Ireland s longest beach. Maharees, Castlegregory As you drive back along the N60, Brandon Bay will open up more to your right and you will enjoy the panoramic views of Mount Brandon and the breaking rollers of the Atlantic Ocean. Having just entered the Gaeltacht, another recommended detour, is for Cloghane (An Clochán) and Brandon (Cé Bhréanainn) Villages. These villages are a joy for walkers, shore anglers and artists and drive out to Brandon Point for mesmerising views of the bays and mountains. Back on the Conor Pass Road, you will be amazed by glacial valley views, craggy mountain peaks and hanging lakes. At the little waterfall, stop and climb up to the splendour of Peddlar s Lake. At the top of the Conor Pass, enjoy the stunning vistas of Brandon Bay and the Kerry coastline to the North and to the South, you will see Dingle (An Daingean) harbour and bay, the Ring of Kerry Peninsula and on a clear day, the Skellig Rocks. Dingle is a fishing port with so much to see and do. A Fungie boat trip, a visit to Dingle Aquarium and so much more, the choice is yours. Dingle is charming with lovely restaurants, pubs, cafes and shops to ramble around. Traditional Irish music is a key feature every evening. Take the R559 westwards towards Ventry (Ceann Trá) with its glorious crescent shaped beach. Shore angling, horse riding and walking are popular here and as you drive further west, you can visit Beehive Huts before you come to Slea Head and the incredible views of the Blasket Islands. You are now looking across at Ireland s and Europe s most westerly point. Stop off at Coumeenole Beach, a famous location scene from Gallarus Oratory the film Ryan s Daughter, and be mesmerised by the breaking jade waves. The Blasket Island Centre is located in Dunquin (Dún Chaoin) and is a great introduction to the history of the islands and their Irish Literary tradition. Ferries to the islands are located here and in Dingle. Driving on you will marvel at the spectacular coastal scenery and stop in Ballyferriter (Baile an Fheirtéaraigh) village, the heart of the Gaeltacht, and spend time at Músaem Chorca Dhuibhne. On the way to the quiet fishing village of Ballydavid (Baile na ngall), stop at the incredible archaeological sites of Gallarus Oratory and Kilmalkedar Church. Make your way back in to Dingle by taking the Feohanagh (An Fheothanagh) route taking you under the western slopes of Mount Brandon. From Dingle, take the N86 for Tralee and Killarney. Just before the village of Annascaul, take the right hand turn for Killarney. However, a stop in Annascaul is a must. It is a walker s paradise and is the home place of Antarctic explorer, Tom Crean. Driving on for Tralee, you will enjoy the Slieve Mish Mountains that will bring you back to the village of Camp and then on for Tralee and North Kerry. Heading towards Killarney, a stop at Inch Beach is a must. It is another of the famous location scenes for Ryan s Daughter. Travel eastwards to Castlemaine and then take the N72 for Killarney or the N70 for Conor Pass Slea Head & Blasket Islands Killorglin and the Ring of Kerry. 16 Photos courtesy of John Hooton Photos courtesy of John Hooton 17
