If you want to compare with Egypt, Penang to KL is like Alex to Cairo. It is also the best way to go to Langkawi by jetty. Penang is famous of its local cuisine. Main Attractions Penang hills: take the train up the steep hill to enjoy the spectacular view over the island, trains are every 30 min. 9 Perhentian Island: Malaysia s east coast islands are the best part of Malaysia main land, the islands still preserve their natural environment and they are not ruined by touristic projects, Perhentian island is in the north, and it is probably the best island in the east coast. It consists of 2 islands (Perhentian Kecil, Perhentian Besar) the first one (kecil = small) is the liveliest with most of the tourists and night life, normally there is a full moon party by the beach, the second one (besar = big) mostly have high rate hotels. Relaxing on the beach: since we are talking about a tropical island, relaxing on the beach is defiantly an option, sleep on one of the hammocks beneath the palm trees and looking at the sea, but watch out from the falling coconuts. Getting There and Around Getting there: reach Kota Bharu by plane (airasia) or land (buses), take a bus to kuala besut where the ferry terminal is, trips to the island takes almost 40 min by speed boat. It consists of 5 beaches, 3 of them have accommodation for visitors Note: only 1 ATM machines 0n the island, in Tekek, it is better not to depend on it. Activities Diving Snorkeling: Rock climbing: Relaxing on the beach: since we are talking about a tropical island, relaxing on the beach is defiantly an option, sleep on one of the hammocks beneath the palm trees and looking at the sea, but watch out from the falling coconuts. Getting There and Around Getting there: reach mersing by bus from KL, and take a ferry to the island, first one is at 6:30 am, there is only 3 in a day. Around: take a taxi boat to move from beach to beach Accommodation Salang Beach: (above pic), it is the liveliest beach on the island, best option with the best landscape; it is often crowded with locals. ABC beach: most backpackers go for this beach due to the large number of bars, there is only 3 dives centers in there. Berjaya: a 5 stars resort, get off the ferry in Tekek and go by a car or boat
Taman Negara: The oldest rainforest open as a national park, and home of the world s longest canopy bridge (0.5 km) Activities: Camping: camping in the jungle is an experience you have to try if you went there, costs 5RM/day excluding camping gear, a tent is a must to protect you from night showers and sniffing wild pigs ( as they would move away from the tent). Camp fires are not allowed. Bird watching: a lot of tourists go to Taman Negara for bird watching as the tropical jungle is filled with different species of birds. Jungle trekking: a guided tour for information on the rainforests and its trees, or just wonder on your own, but be careful you can get lost easily, so stay on the trail get a map and use your compass, if you get lost approach the river and walk by its side until you reach a safe place. (Important rule: never wonder in the jungle at night as animals go for their hunt), make sure that you have enough water (1.5L), snacks and isotonic drinks (1.5L). Cave exploration: caves suiting your skills and time, they range from small caves (solo in 2 hours) to big ones where the guided tours take about 4-6 days ( it is worth the time and money but that if you have the time) Wildlife spotting: wildlife go out during the night for hunting and drinking as they hide from humans in the morning, take a night walk with a guide to spot small animals, spiders, snakes and bugs, or a night safari to go deeper in the forest for more chance of spotting animals (but no insects or small wildlife), you can also try staying the night in a spotting tower to see more animals (useful for bird watching at day also), but make sure that you have a strong torch light. Getting There and Around Visiting the Orang Asli: the orang asli are the native people of Malaysia, they live by the river, check their ways of living. Getting there: there is only one travel agency (Han s travel) that operates the transportations to and from Taman Negara, buses move from KL and Cameron Highlands in the early morning.
Around: boats are the main transportation in the jungle besides your legs for sure, crossing the river to enter the jungle costs 1RM/way. Accommodation Lodges, hotels; starting from 10RM/ bed to more than 300RM/night.
Malaysian Borneo Sabah: Sabah is the largest Malaysian state, it is the home of Mount Kinabalu, the highest mountain in south east Asia 4095m, it is also the home of the orang utans, don t miss them. Once you arrive at the air port, take the free brochures and maps, they are very accurate including all small alleys. They point out the main attraction and the hotels and hostels. Main Attractions Mount Kinabalu: climbing mt. Kinabalu might be the peak of all Sabah activities, spectacular view and the adventure of conquering the 4100m mountain. It is recommended to book for accommodation at the top of the mountain earlier via internet to avoid having to take the 1 day trip. Orang Utan Rehabilitation Center: may be this is the only chance to see an orang utan in the jungle, take the bus Batu 14 from Sandakan, feeding times are 9am and 2pm, fees are RM 30 and RM 10 for the camera Diving in Sipadan Island: sipadan island could not be missed while in Sabah, Malaysia claims that it is the best diving spot in the world, allowing only 150 divers per day and no accommodation on the island, divers go for semporna early in the morning 8am and leaving 4 pm. Rafting in Padas river: rafting 25km in a grade 4 (out of 6) river is extremely exciting. Getting There and Around Getting there: travel to Sabah by air from KL, the cheapest way is air asia. Around: from KK city to kinabalu park take a microbus, to go to Sandakan it is better to go after the climb from mount kinabalu take the bus from the park, from Sandakan to Semporna only one bus leaves at 8am, from Semporna to KK bus leaves at 7pm.
Accommodation: For backpackers: Sabah is full of backpackers lodges with friendly staff, I ve tried the Backpackers lodge which I highly recommend. Important Notes For air asia travel always book your ticket as early as possible as the ticket prices tend to increase as you approach the travel date. Also check if there is a discount or sale period, if you are near a public holiday (eg. Chinese new year, Christmas, hari raya aidil fitri 3eed l fitr ), there is probably a sale in these periods. Eating don t miss roti canai with curry, roti bom with susu and roti susu milo pisang
