Many thanks. the trip On this exclusive trip for Wild Women On Top, you will climb Mount Meru (4566m), the second highest mountain in Tanzania, as well as Mount Kilimanjaro (5895m), Africa s highest mountain. We have scheduled this special departure so you will be climbing to the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro under a full moon which will be an unforgettable experience. Mount Meru is a horseshoe shaped volcanic crater with a spectacularly narrow ridge and superb all round views. The cliffs of the inner wall below the summit are over 1500m high, and inside the caldera is a subsidiary peak called the Ash Cone (3670m) that last erupted only 100 years ago. There is an immense variety of tree and plant life, adding considerably to the interest of the trek. Mount Meru is part of Arusha National Park, and the lower slopes of the mountain shelter a variety of wildlife. The routes below Miriakamba Hut are more like walking safaris than mountain climbs and our guide is an informed and armed park ranger (in case we get too close to some of the animals!). You are almost certain to see buffaloes, warthogs, monkeys, and a variety of birdlife. Giraffe and elephant are also quite common. The climb of Meru is very much justified on its own merits but is also a great way to get acclimatised for Kilimanjaro. The views from Meru to Kilimanjaro, and of the Meru crater itself, give plenty of inspiration for your next climb! We return to Arusha for a night before embarking on our next challenge, Mount Kilimanjaro! Approaching the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro by the remote Shira Route is an exhilarating option for walkers keen to explore less trodden trails and who are comfortable in variable mountain conditions. From the forest and moorland to the caldera of Shira volcano, we explore the fascinating rock formations on the Shira plateau before traversing beneath the southern ice fields of Kibo. We enjoy stunning early morning views of Kibo and will be a highlight before we join the main route to the summit of Uhuru Peak (5895m) on the crater rim. The itinerary allows excellent acclimatisation and flexibility to enjoy the magnificent mountain scenery that extends from the volcanic summit to the vast African plains. We hope you can join Wild Women On Top on this extraordinary adventure in Africa! wild women on top team benefits When you join a Wild Women On Top trip, you become part of an incredible team, and the success of your adventure will depend on the fitness, mental tuffness and emotional tuffness of EVERY team member. If arriving on the recommended group flight into Kilimanjaro Airport you will be met and transferred to the Ilboru Safari Lodge which has spacious rooms, a pool, and restaurant. The track soon passes some open grassland, with a good chance of seeing buffaloes and warthogs, and then continues as a steady climb through montane forest. We have lunch at, or near, the Fig Tree Arch, which is big enough to drive a car through! After lunch, the route continues through less dense forest, where there are an abundance of birds and monkeys. The black and white colobus monkeys are particularly fascinating to watch. By mid-afternoon, there are the first closer views of the towering cliffs and the Ash Cone. We reach Miriakamba Hut (2514m), situated in an idyllic grassy glade, in time to enjoy the last of the afternoon sun and beautiful views over the surrounding plains towards Kilimanjaro. DAY 4 To Saddle Hut (3-6 hours walking) The walk from Miriakamba Hut to the saddle below Little Meru is a short but a steep and sustained climb all the way. We walk through attractive, open, and lush montane forest to reach the halfway point of Elephant Ridge. This has excellent views of the summit ridge and across most of the crater floor. During a break, you might spot elephants or other animals from our vantage point. The path 4 Australian World Expeditions Pty Limited - Kate Harper 7/9/ :49:56 AM

responsible travel The environments we travel through are fragile. It is our responsibility as visitors to minimise the impact of our presence. World Expeditions were the proud recipients of the inaugural Australian National Travel Industry s Environmental Achievement award for our Responsible Travel Guidebook. This detailed guide to responsible and sustainable travel is provided to all World Expeditions clients before they travel. Please ask your consultant if you have not received your copy of our award winning book. Alternatively, you may like to download a copy from our website trip grading As with all our Challenging programs, we expect clients to be regular outdoors people, enjoying aerobic sport around four or five times a week over some period of time. Preferably this has been a long term interest but if not, you have set a program of fitness preparation with at least three months lead in time to your trip. The fitter you are for your trip, the more of a holiday it will be. Activities as close to the actual activity on your trip are the best training; in this instance walking and climbing, with and without a pack. This builds leg strength, aerobic capacity and confidence in your ability to travel comfortably with a pack for extended periods. At the same time, you are also comfortable with the layers you like to wear and footwear. Whilst this ascent of Kilimanjaro is not a technical climb, it is nevertheless a short and steep trek at altitude, and for many people it will be the hardest physical walk of their life. In order to get the most out of the trip, people should join in Arusha with a maximum state of fitness. There is not time to get fit on the trek as with some of our other longer trekker programs elsewhere. continues uphill through giant heather and other moorland vegetation to reach Saddle Hut (3570m), where lunch is waiting for us. The afternoon is free to rest and enjoy the views. The more energetic can make the short climb to the nearby summit of Little Meru (3820m) for superb views just before sunset. DAY 5 To the Summit (Socialist Peak 4556m) (10-12 hours walking) We begin with an early start at around 2.00am to climb steeply to Rhino Point (3800m), and then continue along an undulating ridge of ash and rock to reach Cobra Point (4350m) arriving at around sunrise. The views are stunning: the cliffs of the Crater rim, the Ash Cone rising from the Crater floor, Kilimanjaro floating on the morning clouds and west towards the Rift Valley if the weather is clear. The summit of Socialist Peak (4566m) is another hour on a superb but often steep path. On a clear day, the views are absolutely rewarding. The route back to Rhino Point in the sharp morning light situated on a narrow ridge between the sloping outer wall of the crater and the sheer cliffs of the inner wall is one of the most dramatic and exhilarating walks in Africa. We rest, and have brunch at Saddle Hut before continuing the descent to Miriakamba Hut (2514m). NB* The ridge between the summit and Rhino Point is not suitable for those suffering from vertigo. In icy conditions or in strong winds, it may be impossible for anyone to progress beyond Rhino Point. Sunrise from here is equally as spectacular as from Cobra Point. DAY 6 Return to Arusha (2-3 hours walking). Overnight Ilboru Safari Lodge We take the direct route down towards Momella through open grassland and mixed forest, with good chances of seeing wildlife. This trail has excellent views back towards the crater and over the plains of the National Park. We should reach Momella Gate by late morning. You will then be transferred back to the Ilboru Safari Lodge where you will have the afternoon to rest and hopefully do some washing before setting out tomorrow on your Kilimanjaro Climb. DAY 7 Commence climb to Shira One (3550m, 4-5 hours) This morning we transfer to the beginning of the climb. After completing the necessary registration formalities at Londorossi National Park gate, we drive a short distance on a steep track through farmland and plantations (2800m), and continue climbing steadily on foot through shrub forest and giant heather to reach the rim of Shira Plateau (3350m). The views across the surrounding plains open out as we climb to our first camp in the centre of the plateau at Shira One (3550m) DAY 8 To Shira Hut Camp (3840m, 4-5 hours) We have an easy day to help acclimatisation and to explore the grassy moorland and the volcanic rock formations of the plateau. We walk to the summit of Shira Cathedral (3750m), a huge buttress of rock surrounded by steep spires and pinnacles. There is a tangible sense of wilderness especially when the afternoon mists come in! The views from our camp near Shira Hut (3840m) of Mt Meru floating on the clouds are simply unforgettable. DAY 9 To Barranco Camp 3900m (approx 5-7 hrs walking) A morning of gentle ascent and panoramic views, leaving the moorland plateau behind to walk on lava ridges beneath the glaciers of the Western Breach. After lunch near the Lava Tower junction (4,550m) we descend to the bottom of the Great Barranco valley (3,900m), sheltered by towering cliffs and with extensive views of the plains far below. 5 Australian World Expeditions Pty Limited - Kate Harper 7/9/ :49:56 AM

adventure travel By its very nature adventure travel involves an element of the unexpected. In remote and developing countries do not expect standards you are used to at home. Remote areas are sometimes unpredictable and itineraries may be altered. To get the most out of your adventure it is important that you are flexible, positive and eager to take on all the challenges that arise. If you are uncertain about your suitability for this trip we recommend that you speak with your consultant or travel agent. important note The itinerary should be seen as a guide only. This itinerary may change at any time due to inclement weather, forces of nature and other circumstances beyond our control. Expect The Unexpected. Wild Women On Top Itineraries can change at any time, depending on local conditions, group requirements and weather. DAY 10 To Karanga (4000m, 5-7 hours) A short climb up the famed Barranco Wall leads us to an undulating trail on the south-eastern flank of Kibo, with superb vistas of the Southern Ice fields. The terrain is volcanic scree, with pockets of lush vegetation in sheltered hollows, with a powerful sense of mountain wilderness. Our next camp is at Karanga (4000m), the last water point on the approach to Barafu. There is plenty of time to rest, or for an acclimatisation walk in the afternoon up the valley above the camp towards the glaciers of the Southern Ice fields. DAY 11 To Barafu Campsite (4600m, 3-5 hours) A short but steep climb out of Karanga valley, following an easy path on compacted scree that gains altitude unrelentingly to reach the Barafu campsite (4600m) for lunch. During the afternoon, other walkers will begin to fill the campsite for the first time in our trip. There is a short acclimatisation walk to the plateau at the bottom of the South-East valley (4,800 m.). The remainder of the day is spent resting in preparation for the final ascent before a very early night. DAY 12 Summit (5895m) then descend to Millenium Camp 13-15hrs We will start our ascent by torchlight at midnight so that we can be up on the Crater rim for sunrise. The steep climb over loose volcanic scree has some well-graded zig-zags and a slow but steady pace will take us to Stella Point (5,735 m), in about five or six hours. We will rest there for a short time to enjoy the sunrise over Mawenzi. Those who are still feeling strong can make the two hour round trip from here along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,896 m), passing close to the spectacular glaciers and ice cliffs that still occupy most of the summit area. The descent to Barafu is surprisingly fast, and after some refreshment, we continue to descent to reach our final campsite (3,800 m) Millenium. DAY 13 Descend to Mweka 3-5 hrs, then to Arusha. Overnight Arusha Safari Lodge We have a sustained descent on a well constructed path through lovely tropical forests alive with birdsong and boasting lush undergrowth with considerable botanical interest. Our route winds down to the National Park gate at Mweka (1650m) and on through coffee and banana farms to Mweka village. We are met by our vehicle and transferred to the Ilboru Safari Lodge. A well earned shower is tantalizingly close. This evening you will enjoy a celebratory dinner together to toast your treks on Mt Meru and Mt Kilimanjaro! DAY 14 Trip Concludes. After breakfast at your hotel the trip arrangements end. In the afternoon you will be transferred to the airport for your early evening flight to Nairobi and onward connection to Sydney. One group transfer provided on recommended group flight. Recommended Group Flight: KQ 437 departing Kilimanjaro at 2100/Arriving Nairobi at 2200 Connect with: KQ886 departing Nairobi at 2310/Arriving Guangzhou at 1905 (+1) Connect with: CZ:KQ5210 departing Guangzhou at 2105/Arriving Sydney at 0925 (+2) meals: B This itinerary is subject to change with any change in Community regulations as well as Governmental changes and natural circumstances beyond our control. 6 Australian World Expeditions Pty Limited - Kate Harper 7/9/ :49:56 AM

suggested extensions Zanzibar Retreat Tanzania Wildlife Adventure Gorilla Safari country information Tanzania is the largest country of East Africa, being almost 950,000 sq kms and made up mainly of a dry highland plateau, with a narrow strip of low lying coast and the off shore islands of Zanzibar, Pemba and Mafia. The Rift Valley, containing some of the world s most magnificent and famous game reserves, sweeps down into Tanzania from Kenya and is covered by many inland lakes; Tanzania s highest mountains Meru and Africa s highest, Mt Kilimanjaro lie on or close to the Kenyan border in the north of the country. With a heritage of British and German colonialism and the strong influence of the Portuguese and Arab traders felt along the coast Tanganyika gained it s independence in 1961 and merged with the islands of Zanzibar and Pemba to become Tanzania. Being guided very much by it s president for 20 years, Nyerere, it launched into a radical socialist experiment in self reliance but with little western aid and as one of the world s poorest countries, it s experiment had little chance of success. Today Tanzania is still largely agricultural and depends very much on its tourism for economic survival. With a population of more than 25 million, including over 100 different tribal groups, the majority of people are Bantu, while Arabic features and cultural traits show up throughout the coastal and island communities. The Masai are in evidence in the north of the country, although they no longer hold the large areas they once did and are found across the larger national parks and games reserves. climate As a general rule, Tanzania is usually warm by day and cool by night. Temperatures rarely rise above 27C during the day or fall below minus 10C at night although these conditions are guidelines only and obviously vary with altitude and topography. In spite of its equatorial location, Kilimanjaro and Meru can have severe weather conditions at the higher altitudes and you need to be prepared for temperatures well below freezing at the summit, minus 15C is not uncommon. On the lower slopes, it will usually be mild warm during the day and cold at night. Some rain can occur at any time on the mountain. what you carry In your daypack you will need to carry extra warm clothing (depending on the altitude, location and weather), a rainjacket, water bottle, film and camera gear, valuables and personal items such as sunscreen, lip eze etc. equipment required A comprehensive gear list is provided in the pre departure information supplied on booking. acute mountain sickness When we ascend above 2500 meters our bodies have to acclimatise to the decreasing amount of the oxygen available. To allow our bodies to adjust we have structured our treks so that you ascend slowly, allowing acclimatisation to occur. However, during the acclimatisation process, you may experience some of the following symptoms. Headache Tiredness 7 Australian World Expeditions Pty Limited - Automated Import 7/9/2015 8:00:50 PM

Disturbed sleep Loss of appetite/nausea Shortness of breath Cough Palpitation Swelling of the hands and face Individuals acclimatise at different rates. Your best strategy is to take your time and drink plenty of water. These symptoms may not indicate the onset of A.M.S. and if you experience them it does not necessarily mean that you should not continue. All our group leaders have extensive first aid training and we urge you to communicate with the group leader at all times should you believe you have any symptoms in order that we can effectively monitor your symptoms. The only cure for Acute Mountain Sickness is to descend. Please note that your group leader has ultimate responsibility and may ask you to descend if symptoms persist. porter initiatives Porter Welfare in Tanzania and Kenya: Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru and Mount Kenya Porters are an integral part of the World Expeditions philosophy and style of travel. We take our travellers off the beaten track, avoiding the congested trails, to experience our often remote tent based adventures this style of trekking is enabled by porters. When we trek, the entire group travellers, guides and porters alike are a team who share the same needs for safety in the mountain environment. Our Tanzanian and Kenyan porters receive the following: *Since 2012 World Expeditions has sponsored a guide every year to complete a scholarship course through the Kilimanjaro Guide Scholarship Foundation, which will train them in Tour Operations, Tourism Geography, Wildlife Knowledge and Basic Computer Application. *Porters are paid a rate in excess of the Kilimanjaro Porter Assistant Project (KPAP) recommended minimum wage for porters. *Porters receive at least two meals a day; the third meal is sometimes a snack/tea as this can work best with the itinerary and water supplies etc. We make sure there are more than adequate amounts of food and have a system to check on the mountain that all porters get well fed. *Porters are not to carry more then 20kgs. *The minimum age for a Porter is 18 and there is no maximum age, we assess based on health and willingness to work. *Porters access the same medical kit and evacuation processes as the travellers. Off Mount Kilimanjaro any costs for treatment to injuries that are sustained during work are also covered. *Porters are expected to come to a climb with the correct personal equipment. We regularly provide them with equipment such as sleeping bags and mats, waterproof jackets, gloves, warm hats and walking boots. *We are at the forefront of the process of changing local perceptions of sexual inequality by employing female crew on Mount Kilimanjaro. We have 2 highly successful female guides, a female cook and around 30 female porters. World Expeditions supports the good work of a number of international organisations that operate to ensure the health and education of porters, they are: International Porter Protection Group >> International Mountain Explorers Connection >> Kilimanjaro Guide Scholarship Foundation Inc. >> 8 Australian World Expeditions Pty Limited - Automated Import 7/9/2015 8:00:50 PM
