2 A feast for all travellers... from the Sea to the Sky We chased the sky for 140km in the darkness then pulled into a clearing, and immediately the Northern Lights appeared. As the beam grew in brightness it extended across the whole sky and surrounded us from above. Our guide said something good was building, but it was so much better. The beam burst open and rays, draped like curtains, swayed across the entire sky, with pinks, reds and purples joining the greens and yellows. There were cries of delight and wonder, spontaneous hugs, and shouts of they re real, they re really real, and memories that will last a lifetime. Aurora watching on our exclusive CanArctic escorted tour See pages for 2019 trip details PHOTOS IN THIS BROCHURE Yellowknife is one of the few places in the world you can see the Northern Lights in Summer. This makes it a great extra inclusion to combine with other travel in Canada, and avoid the minus 40 degrees encountered in winter. Rose took this one on her very first night of Aurora viewing. 16 THE AURORA BOREALIS Gaze in wonder as the sky comes alive. A phenomenal experience Forward Travel Director, Rose first saw the Aurora in 2016, and has gone back twice, taking our travellers to see them again, and again. Watching the Aurora dance above me in Yellowknife was a phenomenal, almost fairytale like, experience that I will never forget. It was so much more intense and dramatic than I expected, that I simply didn t want to leave..we recommend staying at least 3 nights, giving you a great chance to see the Aurora, if you have extra time, consider adding another one too. This is my guide to Aurora viewing in Yellowknife, with help of locals who will be doing their best to ensure you see them too. WHEN IS THE THE AURORA SEASON? It runs from August-April, when there is darkness. May to July is just too bright to see them. In keeping with the Summer/Autumn season, we are foucussing on August-September. WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO SEE THEM? Mid August to the end of September and from mid November to mid April are the best aurora viewing seasons in Yellowknife. WHAT TIME DO THEY APPEAR? Whenever the skies are dark. The peak hours are between 11pm and 2am. In Aug- Sep you can expect vewing to start from 9:30pm to catch sunset and last till 3:30am. WHAT IF IT S CLOUDY? Clouds literally bring the curtain down on the show, but quick cloud movement means you still have a good chance of some clear skies during the evenings. Having at least the three nights gives you a good chance for clear skies. WHAT DO I NEED TO PHOTOGRAPH THE AURORA? A good SLR with a wide aperture is best, and a tripod for stability as you will need a 2-5 second exposure to capture the colours. WILL I SEE STARS AS WELL? Oh Yes! you will see millions of stars, satellites, and the whole Milky Way. It s quite mind blowing (if the skies are clear). The aurora shines beneath the stars, and the viewing areas are away from town, so you will have a wonderful star show as well as aurora viewing. WHAT S THE WEATHER LIKE? AUGUST. Late evening sunsets will lead right into aurora chasing hours which can present you with spectacular photography opportunities. The daytime temperatures reach low 20 C, and the nights are beginning to dip below 0 C (that s still considered warm in Yellowknife). More importantly, the skies are often clear. SEPTEMBER. It s the autumn equinox month, and common to see heightened aurora activity from September into October. The good conditions from August carry on, although there will be nights where chasing clear skies is required. Temperatures begin cooling off in the evening, but are still not extreme. WHAT WILL I ACTUALLY SEE? As humans we are so eager to process information that our eyes and brain don t allow time to let the colours develop, so we see greens, yellows, and maybe a tinge of pin Cameras take it slower to let the depth develop. All these photos wertaken with 5-10 second exposures. HOW DO WE SEE THE AURORA? The key thing is to get away from any light pollution. Some companies have viewing areas in remote locations, and others will drive around the area chasing clear skies. These are some samples of the aurora viewing tours available. We will discuss them with you to make sure you choose the one most suitable for your needs. AURORA VILLAGE: Relax and take in nature s most spectacular show in comfort at aurora village. You can stay warm in your teepee with a wood fire stove and hot beverages while you wait for the aurora to arrive. INGRAHAM TRAIL CABIN: A clear dark sky and high solar activity can provide an evening light show that is worth staying up into the wee hours for. Enjoy the warmth of a crackling wood stove, hot beverages and snacks at a remote cabin on the Ingraham Trail. AURORA CHASING: Take to the open road and litrerally chase the sky looking for the aurora. This option gives you the maximum chance to see the lights as you are not restricted to one location. NORTHWEST PASSAGE As we chart a course into the Northwest Passage, our onboard presentation series begins and we delve into the tale of the Franklin expedition and the mystery of what happened. We aim to visit Victory Point, travelling very near the actual location of the wreck of HMS Erebus, while learning about the quest for exploration that eventually opened up the Arctic. Experts agree that the second of Franklin s lost ships, HMS Terror, is likely to be in this vicinity. 22 AUG. CONNINGHAM BAY Arriving at Conningham Bay we find one of the most remarkable wildlife sites in the Arctic. A hotspot for polar bears who come here to feast on Beluga whales. The hope for a passage through the American land barrier lured explorers since the 1400s. All met with failure, and many with disaster. In 1906, after a journey of 3 years Roald Amundsen, found it. 23 AUG. BELLOT STRAIT Today we transit the narrow passage of Bellot Strait. The mixing of waters in this strait provides an abundant food source for marine mammals, and we will keep our eyes peeled for harp seals, bearded seals and even polar bears. 24 AUG. BEECHEY ISLAND Beechey Island is of great historic importance. It is here that Sir John Franklin s ill-fated expedition spent its last comfortable winter in 1845 before disappearing into the icy vastness. A trip ashore at Beechey Island to visit the grave markers on a remote windswept beach gives one pause to wonder on the bravery (or foolhardiness) of these pioneering explorers, as they sought a way through the barren, frozen landscape. 25 AUG. LANCASTER SOUND Cruising the coastline of Devon Island, we are now in the waters of Lancaster Sound a rich, bio-diverse region often referred to as the wildlife super highway of the Arctic. Massive volumes of water from Baffin Bay to the east, Beaufort Sea to the west, and the archipelago of islands to the north combine to make a rich cocktail of nutrients supporting an abundance of Arctic wildlife. 26 AUG. SIRMILIK NATIONAL PARK We sight the wild north coast of Baffin Island and navigate through Navy Board Inlet. The vast landscapes of Sirmilik National Park surround us as we approach the remote Inuit community of Mittimatalik (Pond Inlet). A highlight will be a visit to the Natinnak Centre. We also enjoy meeting the local children of Mittimatalik and marveling at their athletic abilities as they demonstrate traditional Inuit games. 27 AUG. GIBBS FJORD This morning we enter the spectacular Gibbs Fjord. Our expedition ship will be dwarfed by the giant peaks and snowy glaciers as we cruise along the dark waters. 28 AUG. SABELLA FJORD Isabella Bay (Niginaniq) is an important summer habitat and feeding area for endangered bowhead whales. Polar bears, ringed seals, Canada geese, snow geese and narwhal are also found in and around the area. 29 AUG. SUNSHINE FJORD Sunshine Fjord straddles the Arctic Circle. This location offers terrific hiking opportunities and we have a number of great routes in mind. You may wish to take the extended hike or choose to take the less strenuous option along the shoreline. The sheltered waters of the fjord provide the kayakers with great conditions for paddling. 30 AUG. PANGNIRTUNG Nestled in the heart of Cumberland Sound and the western gateway to Auyuittuq National Park, the village of Pangniqtuuq is beautifully situated between the mountains and the sea. 31 AUG. MONUMENTAL ISLAND Situated in the Davis Strait, the rocky dome of Monumental Island can be seen from a distance. We explore by zodiac along the rocky shoreline and hope to encounter polar bears in this vicinity. In good weather a complete circumnavigation of the island in the zodaics is possible. We often encounter large icebergs drifting southward towards Labrador and Newfoundland on the currents of the Davis Strait. 01 SEP. DISEMBARK, IQALUIT Our journey through the Arctic is all but complete as we disembark the ship in Iqaluit, and make our way to the airport and a charter flight returns us to Ottawa, here our journey comes to an end. A transfer is provided to a downtown location. BONUS OFFER! Despite its slim size, Kuiu Island is home to many black bears, who, like you, love the solitude and open skies in the heart of the Tongass National Forest. Kayak along the Keku Islands or take the pace down a notch with an easy stroll amidst the tide pools. It s remote, and remarkable. DAY 6. FREDERICK SOUND Watch for whales feasting in these abundant glacial waters. Based on wind and weather, your expedition team has the lineup of adventures all mapped out. Cruise past Five Fingers Lighthouse, Alaska s oldest light station and The Brothers Islands, where sea lions nap on rocky nobs. Paddle into the deeps of Port Houghton or Windham Bay or head ashore for a hike. DAY 7. ENDICOTT ARM / DAWES GLACIER If the tides are right, slip into Fords Terror, the steep walls of this narrow opening streaked with waterfalls. Back in the Arm, gasp at the deep glacier-carved valleys. Dawes Glacier. Blue ice marches down from the Coast Mountains. With a sharp crack, the white thunder of a calving slice makes a mega-splash. Tonight, celebrate with a festive Farewell Dinner and photo journal from your expedition team. DAY 8. DISEMBARKATION - JUNEAU This morning, transfer to the Juneau airport or begin your UnCruise hotel stay or land tour. ONE DAY IN GLACIER BAY NP WILDERNESS EXPLORATION IN THE TONGASS NATIONAL FOREST AND GLACIER BAY NP GET CLOSE UP TO ALASKA S MOST IMPRESSIVE GLACIERS FORDS TERROR WILDERNESS AREA BY SKIFF HUMPBACK WHALES IN FREDERICK SOUND AND CHATHAM STRAIT KAYAK, PADDLE BOARD AND SKIFF REMOTE INLETS APR - SEP 2019 APR - SEP 2020 FROM ADULT US$3,195 PRICES ARE PER PERSON, SUBJECT TO CHANGE AND FORWARDTRAVEL.COM.AU 57

OUR CONTRACT: These terms and conditions are important. You need to carefully read and understand them. These conditions constitute a legally binding contract between Forward Travel and you. By paying your deposit you acknowledge that you have read and understood and accept these terms and conditions. This contract comes into existence once your deposit is received by Forward Travel. You / your is referring to the person and/or entity appearing first on the booking form, and all people on whose behalf the booking is made. We/Us/Our/Forward Travel refers to Forward Travel Pty Ltd ACN Tour/Trip/Land Arrangements/Service(s) refers to travel services provided involving a booking made by Us for you other than a Cruise. Cruise refers to travel arrangements where accommodation is on a ship or boat. MAKING A BOOKING We will work with you to tailor make the perfect trip just for you. Once you are happy with the trip we arrange let us know and we ask you to complete a booking form. We will then request all the Services and once the arrangements are confirmed you will have seven (7) days to pay a deposit. PRICING: We book your arrangements directly with the service provider at your destination. We pay them in the local currency, or USD. This means we can keep our prices lower, and means if there is a big shift in the exchange rates it may affect the price you pay. We strive to maintain the price although if the change is significant your price will either decrease or increase accordingly. We welcome clients to pay early, either in full or partial, to remove the risk of fluctuations. Once you have paid in full for your trip there will be no changes to the price. We must however reserve the right to amend our prices, at any time up to final payment has been received. PAYMENT METHODS: We accept payment by bank transfer, Visa or MasterCard, and personal cheques. Australian issued Visa and MasterCard payments incur an administration fee of 2%. Payments by Amex will incur a fee of 3%. OVERSEAS ISSUED CARDS: A fee of 2.5% will be added to the amount charged as that is what our bank charges us to accept your payment. Payment by personal cheque is a payment deemed to have been made on clearance of the cheque. DEPOSITS: We only ask for your deposit once each tour component has been confirmed. - Upon confirmation a non-refundable deposit of 20% of the value is due within seven (7) days. - For cruise bookings a non-refundable deposit of 25% of the cruise value is required. Further deposits may be required, and some components, especially airfares, may need to be paid in full. We will tell you about these before making the booking. FINAL PAYMENTS: Final payment is due 60 days prior to your trip commencing. For cruise bookings, the final payment is due 120 days before departure. Exceptions to this will be advised when booking. Airfare payments are dependent upon the airline and the due date will be advised upon booking. If you have made your booking within these time periods full payment will be required immediately. If there are changes to your trip which affect the price we will give you a minimum of 3 days to make the final payment at the invoiced price before the changes are applied. PASSENGER DETAILS It is your responsibility to provide the correct details for yourself and anyone travelling with you. We are not responsible for incorrect passenger details for flights and other services, including the Land Arrangements, which can be costly to change. All travellers are required to provide passport copies at the time of booking to ensure names are correct. Changes to passenger details after booking will incur charges and may cause cancellation of Services. We are only responsible for the Service you have booked with us. You must advise Us of details of Services booked with other tour companies, and any subsequent changes. We are not responsible for any issues that may arise when you have booked other Services with another company. DOCUMENTATION: You will receive all necessary documentation for your trip fourteen (14) days before commencement of our Services. All vouchers, coupons for Services booked by our local operators will be provided to you upon arrival in each country. CHANGES TO YOUR TRIP Changes by You: Amendments: If you wish to change your arrangements after they have been confirmed a $150 administration fee will be charged, in addition to any extra costs. If you wish to defer travel, 50% of your deposit will be held in trust to be applied to another trip booked with Us which departs within 12 months of your original departure date. If you do not travel within this time, this remaining deposit will be forfeited. This only applies to deposits held by Forward Travel, not those passed to tour operators, which have other conditions. You will be advised of these when booking. UNUSED SERVICES: We will not be liable to refund any monies paid by you for any component of your Trip which you do not use, be it voluntary or involuntary. CANCELLATIONS: If you wish to cancel your booking you must notify us in writing before we can accept it. Upon receipt by us of your written advice, cancellation will take effect. Cancellation fees are: Cruises: - 90 days or more before departure loss of deposit. (One Ocean Expeditions, 120 days or more Loss of deposit ) - Less than 90 days or before departure 100 % of cruise price. (One Ocean Expeditions, less than 120 days before departure 100% of cruise price ) Land based touring: - 60 days or more before departure loss of deposit - 30 days or more before departure 50 % of tour price - Within 30 days of departure 100% tour cost. Airfares: Airfare cancellations vary. The minimum cancellation fee is the deposit you have paid. After final payment some will be 100% non-refundable, and some will have airline cancellation charges. The rules for your airfares will be advised at time of booking. CHANGES BY US: Amendments and Cancellations: We plan everything to run smoothly but sometimes changes have to be made, and sometimes they have to be made quickly, perhaps without notice. You need to understand that your itinerary could change due to weather, political situations, airline or cruise schedule changes, transport delays, force majeure events or any other circumstance. Forward Travel cannot accept liability for loss of enjoyment, distress, disappointment or delays or any costs you may incur as a result of such changes. On rare occasions, where a component of your booking is subject to a minimum number of passengers, and that number is not reached, or for other reasons, our operators may decide to cancel a tour or service that you have booked. We will always endeavour to provide alternative arrangements for you which may affect your final tour price. If we cannot book a suitable alternative for you we will refund you any payments you have paid for the component. In the event of such a situation you will not be entitled to make any further claim for compensation or damages for any loss, consequential damage, expenses, and loss of time, distress, disappointment or inconvenience which may result from such cancellation. TRAVEL INSURANCE: You must have comprehensive travel insurance appropriate for your destination and health to travel on our trips. This is to protect you. The policy needs to include cover for emergency evacuation and repatriation and you must carry a copy of your insurance with you when you travel. We strongly suggest you take out the policy when you pay your deposit. Your deposit is non-refundable so you should really have cover in place when you pay it. We recommend you visit your doctor and dentist when you book and you must disclose any pre-existing medical condition. If you fail your medical, a full refund of the deposit paid will be given providing you send us a medical certificate within two weeks of the date of your booking. We guarantee any travel insurance policy purchased through Forward Travel for travel booked through Forward Travel will have appropriate cover. Any travel policy will be subject to the terms and conditions on the policy. We cannot accept responsibility for any policies obtained elsewhere. ACCEPTANCE OF RISK: You accept that all travel involves risk, and that our trips take you to some areas where accommodation, transport, safety, conditions, medical facilities and comfort may be considered adventurous and involve a significant amount of personal risk. By booking with us you understand and accept there may be inherent risks which include, without limitation, the possibility of injury or death, psychological trauma, disease, loss or damage to property, inconvenience and discomfort. You assume all such risk for all itineraries, bookings and tours, and release Us from all losses, costs, damages, expenses, payments, claims or actions arising from illness, injury, disease, misadventure, loss or damage to property, discomfort and inconvenience or death resulting from these inherent risks. You agree that Forward Travel will not be liable to you for any losses, costs, damages, expenses, payments, claims or actions suffered or incurred by you in relation to all itineraries, bookings and tours that you take. Forward Travel acts as a coordinator of tours and an agent for the owners, contractors and suppliers of transportation, accommodation and/or other related travel services provided and assumes no responsibility for the loss or damage to baggage, property or for injury, illness, death or for any damages or claims howsoever caused arising directly or indirectly from accidents, loss or damage to person or property, delays, transport failures, strikes, wars and uprisings or acts of God etc. over which we have no control. By booking with Forward Travel you accept the risks of travel. PASSPORT AND VISAS You are responsible for your own choices in regard to destinations, including reviewing all travel advisories. It is your Responsibility to obtain all of the appropriate visas, permits, vaccinations and certificates for the country/ies in which you will visit during your trip. We are not responsible if you are refused entry to a country because you lack the correct passport, visa or other travel documentation or conditions. Your passport must be valid for 6 months after your planned return to Australia. We recommend you visit for more information and register your trip. HEALTH AND SAFETY All dietary needs, medical conditions, allergies need to be advised at the time of booking to ensure arrangements are suitable. We reserve the right to cancel your participation at any time if your health is deemed to adversely affect the normal conduct of the trip and the enjoyment of other tour members. LIMITATION OF OUR LIABILITY We will plan a fabulous trip for you, and most of the time it will go smoothly. However, if things do not go as planned we need to tell you what we are not liable for: - Anything that happens before you commence travel booked with us. - The amount of sunshine, wind or rain on your travels. - Any poor photography because you didn t read the manual - The amount of wildlife you see. - Any recommendations for goods or services you purchase or accept while away. - Illnesses, accidents or medical emergencies. - Unexpected delays to transport, even if resulting in missing a connection or a tour.
