Ross Ice Shel f Research Overl and t rip -- Bruce Davies When putting together a team they were short of anyone that had experience of hauling large quantities of fuel for hundreds of kilometres over ice. As that is what I do in Greenland, for the National Science Foundation?s Arctic Program, I was invited to join them. This summer season just gone, was the first time that Scott Base has supported a field program, 350km out on the Ross Ice Shelf, that was too large to be air supported. Tractors were required to haul out sufficient fuel and cargo to set up a drill camp, in order to drill through the 350 meter thick ice shelf and study the sea water, and sea floor sediments beneath. A project like this hasn?t been mounted from Scott Base since Ed Hillary drove to the Pole. I had four weeks at Scott Base helping prepare the equipment followed by two weeks on the ice shelf, making two trips out to the site of the drill camp, in the process driving a little over 1,000kms and hauling 45,000Lt of fuel. A photographer from the NZ Geographic magazine came along to document the project and as well as my own photos I also have a selection of his photos to show as well.
