1 SACRED HEART COLLEGE 2 Cross Street, New town Tasmania admin@shc.tas.edu.au Website: Telephone (03) Tuesday, 21 August 2018 Outdoor & Environmental Studies - Major Expedition Monday 24 to Friday 28 September Dear Students & Parents/Guardians, The Outdoor & Environmental Studies Year 9/10 class will undertake their next overnight field trip from Monday the 24 th to Friday the 28 th of September The trip includes (1) a two day river kayaking/rafting trip down the Huon River (classed as an easy (grade 2) river for kayak/rafting) and (2) a three day bushwalk from Judbury to the summit of kunanyi/mt Wellington, these two trips will make up a conjoined journey, encompassing 2 methods of travelling through the bush. We will be studying kunanyi as a case study for tourism, Aboriginal heritage, conservation land use issues and connection to the nature and this experience will give the students first-hand experience with these issues in Tasmania. The purpose of the large multiday expedition is to continue the student s development in planning and undertaking outdoor adventures, to develop expedition skills, navigation, kayaking skills and to work on teamwork and leadership skills. This is one of the peak experiences for the Outdoor and Environmental Studies course at Sacred Heart College and will extend the abilities and skills students have developed over the course. The Huon River and kunanyi/mt Wellington are an important part of the natural environment around Hobart and are part of our unique and beautiful environment and an amazing part of Tasmania, this journey will help build the students connection to this area. This will be an incredible experience for the students and I m looking forward to undertaking this trip with them. The class have done a great job in developing their skills for this trip and this will continue over the next few weeks in the preparation for the expedition and I feel they are more than ready to take on such a large expedition. Supervision: The students will be supervised by myself, Matt Conolan, Outdoor & Environmental Studies Teacher for the whole expedition, three experienced raft/kayak guides (Alex McWhirter, Tom McQueen & Alec Wilson) for the river, and one bushwalking guide, Jen Andrews for the 3 day hike. These staff members will be with the students at all times and an excellent level of respect and behaviour is expected from all students. If a student behaves in any way that does not meet these standards and puts themselves or other group members at risk then the student will be required to be picked up by their parent/guardian and returned home at their own expense. I m sure however that this will not be an issue and we all look forward to an exciting and rewarding experience. Departure & Return Times: Students will need to come to school at 8.30am on Monday the 24 th of September packed with everything they will need for the expedition. We will return from the trip at approximately 5:00pm on Friday the 28 th of September. If our return time is delayed, or we expect to return at an earlier time, students will be able to contact their parents/guardians to let them know.

2 Cost / Meals: The cost of the camp is included in the Outdoor Education Levy paid at the start of the year, however students will need to provide their own food for the 5 day camp. Gear: A suggested gear list is attached as a guide to the equipment that is required. This list also provides an idea of the gear the school will provide for the trip. Students must talk to Mr Conolan at least a week in advance if they need to borrow or hire any equipment that the school does not provide. If you have any questions regarding equipment please feel free to contact me at any time. Food Requirements: Students will need food for all meals for 5 days (sharing with 1 or 2 other students) plus lightweight snacks. At this stage of the OES course students should have a good idea of appropriate food for a long trip. We will however spend two double periods on Wednesday the 5 th and Wednesday the 12 th of September discussing the trip and helping students prepare including a session on lightweight nutritious food for an expedition. A detailed suggested menu will be provided at this time and we will spend some time talking about ideal food for the trip. It will be important when packing the food that student pack two separate food packages, one for the 2 day rafting trip and a second one for the 3 day walk. Risk Management: The nature of this expedition takes us away from immediate emergency care however all staff attending the trip are trained in wilderness first aid and we will be taking a satellite phone and a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) to use in the case of an emergency. A thorough risk management protocol has been developed for this trip and may be viewed by parents/guardians upon request. Whilst Sacred Heart College undertakes a documented risk assessment, risk management and contingency planning process before the approval of any excursion, it is important to acknowledge that there are inherent risks associated with all off campus excursions in excess of those risks associated with normal on campus activities and programmes. This excursion is classified as Category C Overnight and as a result requires specific consent from parents/guardians to confirm each student may participate. As this excursion involves aquatic activities we also require specific consent before students may participate in swimming activities. Please complete the relevant on the Permission Form. The medical form kept on the school database will be used for this camp, however if there are any new medical situations that I should be aware of can you please enter them in the space below. Please ensure that your child packs any necessary medication and informs Mr Conolan where it is packed in the case of urgent use. Please complete the permission slip and return it to Mr Conolan by Wednesday the 5 th of September. Is important that these forms are not returned late as if I do not have the permission slips the students will not be able to attend the journey. Please feel free to contact me at any time should you have any questions or concerns about the multiday expedition on the below. We look forward to an exciting trip. Please find attached: - Permission slip - Daily Itinerary - Clothing & equipment list Yours sincerely, Mr Mathew Conolan Outdoor & Environmental Studies Teacher & Outdoor Education Co-ordinator matt.conolan@shc.tas.edu.au

You will need to keep the food as lightweight as possible Avoid tins, they are heavy (please DONT BRING TINS!!) and packages with lots of liquid. If you can buy dehydrated food or dehydrate your own food you will save heaps of space and weight. Dehydrated food is available from various camping stores and also from Strive Food. Details can be found at this website: You will need to make sure your food is of a high nutritional value to sustain your energy throughout the walk you should also have some high energy snacks such as Dried fruit & choccy (Scroggin), muesli bars etc.. Minimise your packaging the rubbish you take out you will need to bring back i.e. NO TINS. For Items like Milo, sugar, any powders or even pasta it is a good idea to repack them in a snap lock glad bag as this minimises bulky packaging and the bags can be used for rubbish once they are empty.
