North of the Equator, the Great Rift Valley and Mount Kenya lies the awe inspiring Laikipia Plateau, an area the size of Wales, still free from the hordes of game vehicles and flashing cameras that are found in more well-known regions. There is plenty of room here for tourists, abundant wildlife and intriguing tribes. Laikipia is where Kenya s wild and semi-arid northern frontier country starts. Amid spectacular scenery, traditional ways of pastoral life continue side by side with an abundance of free-roaming game. This is high country, with altitudes from 1,700 meters (5,577 feet) to 2,600 meters (8,530 feet). Habitats range from arid semi-desert, scrubland, and sprawling open plains in the north and south, to the thick forests of cedar and olive trees in the east. To the north are camels and desert. Hills and deep ravines spread like fingers between fast flowing streams and rivers gushing their way in to the Uaso Nyiro (Brown River), northern Kenya s largest river. Formerly a patchwork of huge ranches and still an important area for livestock, Laikipia works in a way which means that the numbers of tourists are very well controlled by the number of lodges each conservancy/ranch has. Always spacious, it is never crowded. One of the attractions of Laikipia is that no two products seem to be much alike.

4 Safaris will as often as not be by camel, or on horseback or as treks with colourful Samburu tribesmen. There is almost always a pleasant climate with no big temperature differences, unlike other parts of Africa where some months are unbearably hot. P a g e 4 There are no tsetse flies in Laikipia. There is easy access by light aircraft or helicopter to wonderful pristine landscape. The cultural experiences available at Laikipia are more genuine and more diverse than in Maasai areas, with the Samburu on the doorstep, and Rendille and Pokot close enough to see on a day excursion from the lodges. All the lodges are extremely pro- active in supporting conservation and community programmes within the region, and in educating clients and involving them in the massive amount of work being done in the conservancy to sustain wildlife and cultural well being. The local communities obtain real benefits from tourism and vice versa. The area around the Laikipia Plateau has one of the biggest and most diverse mammal populations in Kenya only the Maasai Mara can claim to have more game. The Big Five are all present, plus the wide-ranging wild dogs; there's even a chance of seeing the rare aquatic sitatunga antelope. Grevy's zebra, which is more narrowly striped than its southern cousin, was once hunted almost to extinction for its fine desirable skin, but has re-established itself. You are more likely to see rhino, leopard and wild dogs here than in any other part of Africa. Other rare animals include the reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich and Beisa oryx. Moreover, you can also find most of Kenya s more common wildlife in Laikipia, as well as more than 2,000 elephants, which migrate between the slopes of Mount Kenya, the Laikipia safari conservancies and the Samburu region. The lasting memory of most visitors is that they have been somewhere in Africa which relates more to the picture painted of the pioneer days...of Out of Africa, Finch-Hatton, Hemingway and the flamboyant life in a Happy Valley; of a variety of amazing scenery, of wildlife adventures and of extremely interesting people, both indigenous and migratory. Notes Upon your arrival at Nairobi s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, you will be met by a representative after clearing immigration and customs formalities, who will assist you with your luggage and escort you to your scheduled service flight to the Loisaba Airstrip, departing Nairobi at 10:20 and arriving into Loisaba at 11:45. (NOTE: As in all airports in the World, at times of heightened security, including visits by Heads of State etc., our Fast Track intentions may be adapted to suit the situation of the day). (NOTE: Luggage allowance is strictly 15 kilograms per person in soft sided bags) Scheduled safari flights link various camp airstrips with each other, and with various hubs including Arusha, Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, and Nairobi. On arrival at the Loisaba Airstrip, you ll be met by a vehicle and driver from the Ol Malo House for your transfer to your accommodation. The drive is about 40 minutes, and you may see game en route. At Ol Malo House you will be staying in the Crocodile Cottage. In the afternoon, you ll be heading out for game activities within the Ol Malo Conservancy! Ol Malo is about more than just the game, it immerses you with the local community, the Samburu people. This is not in a cosmetic way, but really in the Samburu s day to day activities! Overnight you ll be staying at Ol Malo House on a full board basis. On arrival, you will be met by Andrew and Chyulu Francombe, the owner managers of Ol Malo who will discuss with you the sort of program available to your family and devise a provisional daily event schedule involving the activities and others mentioned.

For the more adventurous horse riding down towards the river; Guided Walks An experienced Samburu guides will take you on a nature walk to show you the Little Five ant lion, leopard tortoise, elephant shrew, rhino beetle, buffalo weaver. Or you can choose to learn about the plants the Samburu use for medicine and food. Or stand in amazement at the sight of the 330 named species of birds found at Ol Malo.

8 P a g e 8 Wildlife is prolific, and includes 4 of the Big 5 (Buffalo, Elephant, Leopard and Lion) as well as frequent sightings of Eland, Beisa Oryx (rare elsewhere), Gerenuk, Greater kudu, Water Buck, Giraffe, Zebras, and Various Antelope; there are more leopard in Laikipia than anywhere else on Earth, and there is a leopard hide on the property. Cheetah, Striped Hyena, and even Wild Dog are seen. The Leopard Hide is with bunk beds by the water hole, so you can stay out all night. There is also a Tree House, like the Nest, at Ngare Serian. The day may start with a wakeup call with hot coffee or tea, and with freshly baked cookies being delivered to you on your ' veranda' to allow you to watch the sun rise over the wild and spectacular land in front of your cottage, with Mt. Kenya looming majestically in the background. If you are lucky you may spot the elusive leopard as he slinks off under the shade of a tree to nap through the day, or maybe a herd of elephant coming in to drink at the water pool below your cottage. An early morning game drive to spot the first giraffe, eland, buffalo or maybe a skulking cat is followed by a late breakfast. Some people prefer to go on a nature walk in the cool of the morning, accompanied by guides and camels and later they will be surprised by a delicious breakfast served under the shade of an acacia tree, just at the right moment. Or a horse ride will take you into the midst of the game. As the tropical sun climbs higher in the sky, guests return from various activities to the lodge to relax by the infinity swimming pool. A visit to the Samburu workshop, run by Julia, the Francombe s daughter, is a popular and interesting activity. Colourful Samburu women sing while they use their beading skills to create wonderful objects to Julia's designs. Groups of chatting Samburu children paint delightful pictures of their world around them in bright colours. This 'Development through Art' workshop is designed to help the local people help themselves and puts money in the Ol Malo Trust to help with education and medical. Ol Malo is also justifiably proud of its excellent clinic and medical facilities. Lunch is served at the pool and is a very informal affair. Followed by an afternoon by the pool, relaxing or a visit to the Ol Malo shop and very soon it is time for an evening activity. A visit to the local Samburu homestead 'Manyatta' is a wonderful experience. Totally unspoilt by western cultures, these friendly people welcome you into their home

9 P a g e 9 and share their lifestyle. Colourful warriors dancing with the exquisitely beautiful young girls present a scene of an unspoilt and ancient culture.and a super photo shoot. Activities include:- Horse riding, camel riding, nature walks, running with the Samburu, night drives, picnic breakfasts, lunches by the river, river walks, swimming in the river, shooting the rapids in old tyres, sundowners on the rocks, barbeques in the bush, mountain bikes. Helicopter safaris are very popular. The use of a helicopter to get a bird s eye view offers guests an experience of a life time. Helicopter excursions can go anywhere. Ol Malo has reputedly the best horses in East Africa for horse safaris, and fly camping with either horses or camels, or both. And to return in the evening to hot showers and baths before cocktails in front of the fire followed by a candlelit dinner, regaling tales of the day s activities or listening to Colin telling stories from the past is a wonderful way to end the day. And perhaps finally. spending a night in a leopard hide where four bunk beds are set up for you to relax whilst you wait and spot this most elusive of wild animals. This room sleeps two. - It comprises a large double bed, safe, full mirror, traditional Finch Hatton style furniture, lots of wood, Makuti roof, separate dressing area and leading through to huge en suite walk in shower, and the croc tub. - Outside veranda with chairs and table, and overlooking ravine. - Hippo Cottage is the other side of the main area to Crocodile Cottage. It has a large open living room with a view which leads in to the bedroom, which can be set up as twin or double. An extra bed can be accommodated on the Mezzanine Floor. - It has a further double bedroom with an extra single bed.
