Reasons to come to Cordoba HISTORICAL AND ARTISTIC HERITAGE Cordoba is an historical inland city located in Andalusia (Southern Spain), with a privileged climate in June and an impressive cultural and historical patrimony, which features an unique combination of Roman, Muslim, Jewish and Christian heritage. Since time immemorial, Cordoba has served as a magnet for travellers and cultures. Its strategic location, fine weather and natural setting have meant that for over 20 centuries, it has been considered a perfect city to settle in by the different peoples, who have made their way here. 11
Reasons to come to Cordoba UNESCO WOLD HERITAGE SITE The UNESCO (The united Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) recognised in 1994 the universal importance of Cordoba s historic legacy, and extended the tittle of World Heritage Site not only to the Mosque-Cathedral, but also to all the streets and buildings around it. In addition, in December 2012, Cordoba was awarded a further accolade: The Festival of the Patios (Courtyards) was added to the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity sites. With the rest of Spain, it shares the tittles of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity awarded to Flamenco (2010) and the Mediterranean Diet (2013). 12
Reasons to come to Cordoba MOSQUE-CATHEDRAL OF CORDOBA The Mosque is the one of the most important monuments of the Islamic West. It began to be built in the 8th century by Abd-Al Rahman and held a place of importance among the Islamic community of Al-Andalus for three centuries. The great Mosque is made up of two distinct areas, the courtyard with its porticos, where the minaret stands, encased in the Renaissance tower, and the prayer hall. The area inside is made up of a forest of columns with a harmonious colour scheme of red and white arches. 13
Accompanying persons options COURTYARD FESTIVAL IN CORDOBA Every year in May, the city of Cordoba in Andalusia celebrates its famous Courtyards Festival, a tradition which was declared a part of our Intangible World Heritage by UNESCO in 2012 and during which many of the courtyards or patios in the historic quarter are open to visitors for a few days. The festival is a competition to discover the most beautiful courtyards in the city, and fills the streets with colour, the scent of jasmine and orange blossom. The courtyards of Cordoba are a living tradition dating back to Roman times, and which continued throughout the Arab presence until being handed down to us today. The traditional houses in the city are noted for their courtyards surrounded by whitewashed walls adorned with hanging flowerpots filled with colourful geraniums, jasmine, carnations and orange blossom. Although the competition takes place in May, we can enjoy this tradition all year round just by walking round the streets of this beautiful city. 14
Accompanying persons options MADINAT AL-ZAHARA The history of Medina Azahara, the magnificent, enigmatic city palace which was built for Abd-al Rahman III at the foot of the Sierra Morena mountains five miles from the city, is shrouded in myths and legends. According to popular belief, Abd al-rahman III, after proclaiming himself Caliph in 929 A.D., after eight years in power, decide to build the city-palace in honour of his favourite, Azahara. Rich marbles of violet and red, gold and precious stones, as well as the skilled work of artisans from the best quarries and the now legendary Byzantine contributions, helped to make the palace take on its full glory. 15
Accompanying persons options JEWISH QUARTER The Jewish Quarter is the best-known part of Cordoba s historic centre, and is one of the largest in Europe. Its medieval streets have a distinctly Moorish flair to them, reminiscent of the Jews prosperity under the Caliphate of Cordoba. FORTRESS OF CATHOLIC MONARCHS This building was the royal residence of the Christian monarchs. It is set among magnificent gardens, including the garden known as the Avenue of the Monarchs which features statues of all the monarchs who had connections with the palace-fortress. 16
Accompanying persons options TAPAS Tapas are at the very heart of Spanish lifestyle and culture. In Cordoba, you will find lively, noisy bars serving small plates of superb flavours and local delicacies. Enjoy It is essentially a style of eating rather than a form of cooking. Tapas mean sociability, friends and family. The Spanish, in general, won t drink without eating something as well. FLAMENCO Flamenco is a passionate and seductive art form, a mysterious and misunderstood culture that has been burning in Andalucía for nearly five hundred years. 17
