1 OLYMPIA YACHT CLUB November 2014 ello my OYC Family. H November is the month that is recognized for giving thanks and there are a lot of reasons to be thankful. Let me begin by thanking those of you who attended the Commodore s Ball. Joe and I cannot express in words how much it meant to us that you shared this day with us. We are so honored to be of service to you. In addition to you celebrating with us, Michelle Aguilar Wells and her crew turned our clubhouse into a magical moment where each of us were transported to a sidewalk in Paris. I was moved to tears upon my first view of it. Special thanks to all of you who helped in this transformation. Thanks to PC Jeff and Debra Pape for spearheading the event the food was fantastic! The evening was full of laughter and good cheer. Joe and I were still feeling all the love and good wishes on Sunday. What a weekend one we will never forget. We also want to extend our thanks to Jan Wilson who has gathered all the material and pictures that are necessary for us to have a wonderful, beautiful and of course useful, OYC Member Directory. This is a challenging job and she took great care in making sure it will meet your needs and expectations. We will be distributing them at our November 5 th dinner meeting. I know we are all also thankful for the friendship we share with each other. The Ball was such a perfect blend of long time members and members who have joined in the last few years. OYC is truly blessed to have such supportive and friendly members. I am thankful that we are moving into our holiday season my personal favorite time of year. I love all the decorations, the celebrations, the FOOD, and the genuine good cheer that fills the air. By the time you read this we will have had our Halloween Party at the Island, our Women s Night Out spearheaded by the Women s Auxiliary the Anchorettes, and our own TGIF costume party. Three more things for which we can be thankful. I close with a smile on my face and good wishes for all of you. Sincerely, Commodore Commodore Myra Downing Captain Joe Downing S/V Balder II Commodore Myra Downing Captain Joe Downing S/V Balder II

2 The Beachcomber November 2014 Olympia Yacht Club 2 Vice Commodore Captain Mike Phillips First Mate Patti Phillips M/V Chaotic Too Hello. We have a very busy fall and winter season ahead of us with the Commodores Ball, the Halloween Cruise, the Christmas Party, the Parade of Lighted Ships, the Special Peoples Cruise, and the New Year s Eve Party. We have many great functions to attend, and with all the great enthusiasm and excitement for the club at this time, I hope you can attend them all. I have a couple of updates to share with you. The first is: the Christmas Party. We had our first planning meeting and I think we will have a great party. The theme is It s a White Christmas, and it s going to be a lot of fun. But I am still asking for volunteers to help us with the decorations. The more the merrier. The first work party is on Nov. 3 rd at 5:30 in the clubhouse. So bring your glue guns if you have them, and if not, just come down and help us make the decorations. It s going to be fun. The second is: the summer cruise to the islands. We have our ports of call set at this time. I have talked to all of the marinas and they are locked at this point. We need to have a meeting at some point, but I think we can do what we need to by utilizing our s. This will save time during the holiday season. What I need is everyone to think about what they want to do at all of the marinas. Then send me your thoughts. It would be neat to see what everyone has done in the past.. I will correlate them and then I will set up a meeting so we can discuss all of them. Also, I have to contact all the marinas after the first of the year for a final lock on their calendars. At that time I will need to know all of the overall boat lengths. And the third thing is I need all of the s of people who are interested in going on the cruise at this time. So please send me your thoughts to mphillips@hamil.com or call my cell, So see you at the functions and on the docks. You may ask what this has to do with anything at all and I admit - not a damn thing. I just felt it was a worthwhile quote which made me grin a little and I hoped it would do the same for you. More importantly it starts to fill up the space given to me in the Beachcomber and in which I obviously have little to say. That said however, we are coming upon Thanksgiving which is the official start of the Holiday season. On Wednesday, November 5 we invite you to our Thanksgiving dinner. Turkey, dressing, pumpkin cheese cake. It is a time to give thanks for what we have and to start planting hints for what we want by way of Christmas gifts. Keeping in the holiday spirit please remember those who are less fortunate and can aspire only to the ownership of Bayliners. This comment is, in addition to my way of seeing if anyone reads this, (by counting the death threats I will receive from deranged Bayliner owners), a reminder to please keep up your food bank donations. Remember we have both the Christmas Party upcoming and our New Year s Eve party. Please put these on your calendars. See you about. 4 Fleet Captain Sail Fleet Captain Bill Sloane First Mate Lorie Sloane S/V Endless Summer In 1962, Stacey Bennett, an Olympian architect, designed the current OYC clubhouse at our home station here in Olympia. Stacey Bennett went on to become a founding partner of Bennett, Johnson, Slenes and Smith Architects, commonly known as BJSS, the oldest and largest architectural firm in Olympia, until the firm permanently closed in The Olympia Yacht Club Clubhouse today stands as a beautiful and aesthetically pure example of Mid-Century Modern architecture. The stewards of the building, our yacht club members, have maintained the building in excellent condition. No additions have altered or compromised Stacey Bennett's original design. The building is now 52 years old and because it is older than 50 years, is potentially eligible to be placed on the Thurston County Historic Register. The Historic Register is an official list of places important to the history of Thurston County and worthy of recognition and preservation. The benefits to this designation are numerous and it would certainly help establish the permanence of our building far into the future. OYC has been around 110 years and intends to be around 110 more. Being on the Historic Register does not mean the building cannot be altered or expanded. It simply means that alterations or expansions must be designed in the spirit and aesthetic of the original structure. It is an idea that warrants discussion Fleet Captain Sail Bill Sloane southsoundbill@gmail.com (360) cell phone First mate Lorie Sloane lesloane@comcast.net S/V Endless Summer TGIF Thank Goodness it s Friday! I would like to take this opportunity to 'thank' Jim Smith for adding more varnish to our OYC established sign on front of the club house ( it's probably good for 10 years +). New member, Denise Lynch, helped out by painting the rest of our new interior doors, trim and the ladies room wainscot trim, 'thank you' for getting involved! By the time you receive the newsletter, you will see we have professionally installed commercial exterior clear lighting, cut to fit the buildings individually and maintained annually, thank you Majestic Lighting (they have been doing Bayview, Ralph's and many more commercial & residential in the area for 12 years). 6 The Beachcomber November 2014 Olympia Yacht Club 6 Board of Trustees George Smith, Chair M/V Aventura Moving into fall you might think that things are slowing down for your BOT but that is not the case. We are moving forward with the Seattle Boat Show, replacing docks and just the general business of the club. Please contact Bill Wilmovsky to volunteer to work the boat show. Membership is staying right at 280 which is good. We are losing a few but gaining new members and members who are returning from Demit. Leon and Joanie Werner are an example of a member who is returning from Demit. They joined OYC in 1987 and were very active. They took a Demit a year ago and are now returning from Demit. We will vote on them at the November dinner meeting. The BOT has voted to adopt a no open carry firearm rule. The rule has been posted at the clubhouse and it will be read at the November dinner meeting. The rule is as follows: Open-carry of firearms on OYC property is prohibited. OYC recognizes that open-carry of firearms is permitted in Washington State unless there is something that makes it specifically illegal, such as prohibited carry on private property. OYC is aware that a person carrying a firearm intimidates many people, even if it is not intended to intimidate. The exception to this rule applies to duly authorized law enforcement officers. Violation of the rule will result in actions under Article 3, Section 7 of the OYC bylaws. On a sad note, I just received word that Bob Utter passed away on Thursday, October 16 th. He was very effective on the Government Affairs Committee and we appreciated his expertise. He will be missed and we are thinking of Betty and his children at this time If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me or attend a BOT meeting. My phone is always on. PC George Smith Chairman of the Board 4gwsmith@comcast.net

7 Island Home Gary Gronley, Chair The fall season is here and you should take advantage of our great island. Not counting the Foofaraw cruise, we have had over 500 members and guests visit our island this year. Many of the boats in the registry are from our new members; and I see them participating on the cruise committees. For the holiday season this year we will be adding outdoor lighting to our club house. The committee hopes that you enjoy this addition. The Island Home committee will meet for their monthly meeting Monday Nov. 3rd at 7:00 pm at the Mainstation. If you want to have input on the management of your island, this is a good time to start.. See you on the Island. 47` N 122` W Gary Gronley M/V Our Adventure Womens Interclub Council Kim Shann, Representative Main Station Ron Vukonich, Chair November already! Gobble gobble! How did we go from 80 degrees to Christmas decorations at Lowes? It has been a very busy year at OYC. The dredge and pile projects hit the top of the list. Pilings associated with the "grid" were replaced, the area cleared of muscles and silt. The "grid" is close to being usable. Contacts for grid use are Steve Parrott and Matt Herinckx. They will oversee training and use of the "grid". The main station committee has also been busy this fall. The work shop is shaping up. The work shop group has organized the space to be a useable shop. The trestle that connects the board walk to the main entrance gate was identified as in need of repair. This repair is underway. Paul Deranleau is taking the lead on this project. Research has started for repair/replacement of the 100, 200, visitor dock and the 500 to 600 connector dock (shed area). There are some great dock systems available. The main station committee will work to provide an economical, long lasting and safe dock system for OYC membership. Hope the fall cruising season has been enjoyable. See you on the docks. Ron Vukonich Main Station Chair Our next Women's Interclub luncheon will be at the Everett Yacht Club on November 13th, The Ladies of Everett YC have cordially invited all of us to attend their luncheon and to get more acquainted with our other Grand 14 ladies and also HOW TO SORT THROUGH A LIFETIME OF TREASURES AND MEMORIES, with Bette G. Bell, ISA CAPP as speaker. This will be a very interesting topic to listen and learn from. Please make your reservations to attend this luncheon by November 5 at our dinner meeting night. Call Kim Shann Cost $15.00 Car pooling is always available. 7

8 The Beachcomber November 2014 Olympia Yacht Club 8 Club Service Program PC Les Thompson, Chair Government Affairs Gary Ball, Chair Greetings everyone and Happy Fall to all. I hope you all have been enjoying the wonderful Fall weather or should I say a continuation of this fabulous summer and getting out on your boats. The year is quickly winding down for CSP projects. We have had many events going on at the Mainstation and clubhouse this fall and many of you have gotten lots of CSP credit. I will be posting the updated report the end of the month before the dinner meeting. This will include Foofaraw, grid work, piling work, Commodore Ball and Halloween cruise as well as miscellaneous hours. This will give you ample time to get in any hours you still need. Just a reminder, as I have had a few claim 20 or more hours for Foofaraw, members only receive 8 hours total for taking guests out to the Island even though it involves a whole day. Chris Cheney aka Luke, has given me the entire report as has PC first mate Cindy. Hours for the other areas have been turned in by the Board chair and committee chairs for each event. Thanks to all of you who have completed your hours and to those of you still working on them. Your help is valuable to the club and it is much appreciated. Keep up the great work. We have a great club. OYC Rocks!!! See you on the docks or at one of the events. PC Leslie Thompson CSP guru M/V EcstaSea There has been no new information on Olympia s Shoreline Master Plan (SMP) or Olympia s Comprehensive Plan. Our committee continues to follow these plans. OYC submitted public comments on the Comp Plan in July. The SMP is still being reviewed by the Department of Ecology and that review should be complete by December. The mediation process for the lake/estuary issue started this summer. CLIPA (of which OYC is a member) developed a position paper supported by our recent dredge data and submitted that paper to the mediator. In addition, a member of the GAC was interviewed by the mediator. Dick Binns continues to develop a PR plan for the club and will present it to the board and bridge later this year. We have already seen positive results of having someone focused on PR for the club. We are starting work on our annual waterfront reception for legislators and other local elected officials. It will be held during the time that the legislature meets. Most likely we will team up with Northwest Marine Trade Association and Recreational Boating Association of Washington again to improve attendance and share costs. We are always looking for people who would be interested in joining our committee. If you are interested, please feel free to contact me. Moorage Report Bridget Shreve, Moorage Master Fire Safety forms MUST be turned in by Nov. 30th at the latest. Fines start on Dec. 1st for those members that have NOT turned it in. Forms are in the Beachcomber and inside the clubhouse by the side door. Thank you for your cooperation Bridget Shreve Moorage Master Quartermaster Phyllis DeTray, Chair The Quartermaster Store is now open before each dinner meeting. We have many new items for you to purchase. Jackets for men and women Denim shirts in all sizes Long sleeve tee shirts Colorful sweaters Caps in many color combinations All items have the Yacht Club Logo. See you at the store. 10 The Beachcomber November 2014 Olympia Yacht Club 10 Yearbook Committee Jan Wilson, Chair Lighted Ships Parade I know you haven t heard much from this chair in a while but I have had my nose to the grindstone getting this year s Yearbook to Press. Learning the ins and outs of the production involved and the addition of forty plus new members set our timing back a bit-but I think you will agree it was worth the delay to ensure that our entire membership is represented in this edition. The expectation is that by the time you read this the 2014/2015 version of the Yearbook will be at the OYC clubhouse. We will hand out copies to members at the November meeting. Following the meeting, I will leave one box at a time in the cloakroom. A sign-out sheet will be provided. Please make sure to check your name off if picking up the book in this manner. At this time, we do not have enough copies for members to have more than one. After the initial distribution it is likely that we may have extra copies, but we want to make sure any interested member has one available on the first go round. As done in the past, if you are not local and unable to come to the club to pick up your copy, send a note and your book will be mailed to you. Postage charges will be pasted on. Well it s been an interesting, perplexing, fun, learning, skill-building, grueling process. One of the most fun pieces has been getting to know all of you better. I think this Yearbook will continue to be valuable to the club-and is worthy of time expenditure. After living through this process, I think we all need to give Beth Branshaw [thanks] for the fine job she did the past three years getting the Yearbook to its current state. It is also quite clear to me that this cannot be a one-person process. Going forward I would love to have two or three additional members who are willing to participate as part of a Yearbook Team. I have had one volunteer already, and would like it if we could find a couple more. The next step will be integrating the existing club data with the Yearbook process, so that the end product provides an accurate member list. Volunteers? There are CSP hours to be earned! Send me an at OYCyearbook@gmail.com, chat with me at an event or meeting, or call Jan Wilson at The 2014 Lighted Ship Parade is just around the corner! Throw some lights on that boat of yours and join us in the parade. The date is December 6th at 6 pm. The parade goes out in front of Anthony's where the judge boat will be set to judge the best and the brightest! The parade then proceeds out along the east side of Budd Bay to Boston Harbor and returns along the west shore of Budd Bay back to the yacht Club. After the parade we will have some hot food and drinks in the clubhouse. The theme is "Nautical Noel" so get those creative juices flowing! 3 CSP hours for being in the parade. We would love to have a great turnout for the parade. Many people plan parties around this event as well as all the people that line up to watch at the port plaza...we don't want to let them down! Please call me with any questions or to help! Susie Zuelke susiezuelke@gmail.com A Fun New Event Hey all OYC members! Have you ever seen one of those fancy gingerbread houses and wondered how they created such a delight? Well now you can see first hand! New members Kelly and Maryann Thompson are heading up a team of culinary artists to create a gingerbread replica of the OYC lighthouse. OYC has graciously offered a donation to sponsor this event. The gingerbread houses will be on display in the Washington Center and auctioned off to raise money for Sidewalk. Sidewalk is an organization whose goal is to end homelessness in Thurston County. If you are interested in helping with this worthy cause and having fun in the process please come to the meeting November 3rd at 6 pm. CSP hours available. We need your creative culinary skills! And if you are lucky enough to be in the clubhouse on cooking day, there is nothing better than the smell of gingerbread! Enjoy! Rick Antles & Susie Zuelke Susie Zuelke susiezuelke@gmail.com

12 The Beachcomber November 2014 Olympia Yacht Club 12 The History Corner Lisa Mighetto, OYC Historian Pickering Passage: Part II Last month s column described the early 20th-century ferry system that transported passengers to Harstine Island from a landing just north of Island Home. The original ferry, called Island Belle, was replaced by a larger vessel called Hartstine I in the 1920s. In 1945 Harstine II, the third and final ferry, began carrying passengers across Pickering Passage. OYC members, including Gary Gronley, remember taking this ferry, which was operated by Mason County. In 1969 the ferry was replaced by a bridge, dedicated in a ceremony on June 22. Visible from Island Home, the bridge represents the end of an era for Pickering Passage. The OYC established Island Home as its outstation two years later. The black & white photos below show the ferry in the 1960s. Island Home is visible in the aerial photo of Pickering Passage from the 1970s. 13 Environmental Committee Report Rick Bergholz, Chair Greetings Good folk of the OYC, As the newest member of the Environmental committee [Denise Zermer], I am happy to be part of such a wonderful organization full of people who are generous with their time and talent. In most part due to an eye-opening environmental health class I took in college, I have become very interested in practicing and promoting recycling as an ordinary consumer. The members of OYC I have encountered impress me as intelligent and mindful of the impact boating has on our beautiful land and waterways. My little project is to see what I can do to improve our ability to recycle more effectively and properly when we have events at both stations. If any of you care to share the history, reality, limitations and barriers our club has encountered in endeavors to recycle, I would be most appreciative. Some may say I am somewhat of a contradiction, being married to a guy who flies jets, drives an SUV, owns a classic car and now a dual engine power boat! I couldn t agree more! However, I have learned that if each of us does what we can to conserve, recycle, repurpose and re-use, it adds up in a big way! Feel free to call or me with ideas or input as I gather information and formulate some options for us to explore. Respectfully, Denise Zermer dzermer@myway.com As the environmental Committee chair I greatly respect the efforts of Gary Gronley and George Wittaker out at Island Home. They have placed recycle containers both up at the clubhouse and right beside the dumpster on the mainland. Let s all show our respect for their efforts by recycling as much as we can. There is an information sheet on the top of the container on shore and do remember that in Mason County, glass is not recycled. So please no glass in the recycling there. Please don t throw aluminum cans in the trash; our grandchildren are going to need the resources we are wasting. Rick Bergholz, Environmental Committee Chair Fleet Surgeon Richard Hurst, M.D ( Rich ) Shingles Shingles great for houses and not so good for people. Almost all of us older members had Chickenpox.. It is a highly contagious infection from the Varicella Zoster virus that causes really itchy blisters and often left scars because we scratched them contrary to mom s advice. Well, the virus isn t really cleared from the body as the common cold virus is. It lies dormant in the nerve roots and as our immune systems weaken with age or as a result of certain medication or diseases, the virus can be reactivated resulting in Herpes Zoster or shingles. Shingles may have a short early symptom of headache, but really become noticeable when pain, burning, or itching is noticed along the nerve whose root is infected. This usually is in a band-like distribution only on one side of the body. This pain may last several weeks and may be puzzling to your doctor as to the cause. It becomes clear, when the blistery rash suddenly appears, as to the diagnosis. Treatment may be with antivirals such as acyclovir or rarely steroids. Usually, the outbreak is benign, but if the nerve to the face is severely involved, blindness can occur. The most common bad effect of the outbreak is a lingering pain that can last for weeks or even years. This can be severe and life altering requiring a number of medications and salves. Most, but not all, who get shingles, will not get it again. Up to 1/3 of adult will get shingles in their lifetime. Shingles is not contagious for those who have had chickenpox or shingles, but it can be spread to unimmunized or immune compromised patients. It should be well covered or stay at home to avoid inadvertent spread. Immunization is appropriate for those over 50 years of age. Because the immunization involves a weakened live virus, you should not receive it if you have TB, HIV/AIDS, ongoing cancer treatments, a history of leukemia, or allergies to the serums ingredients such as neomycin or gelatin. The treatment decreases risk of shingles by at least 50% and if you do come down with it, the disease may be less severe and with shortened symptoms. If you have had shingles already, the decision for immunization is more complex so discuss with your physician. The vaccine costs $200 and may be covered in whole or in part by your insurance. 13
