1 Planners GUIDE

2 Welcome to the Twin Cities! On behalf of the Planners Guide Subcommittee, we hope you have a great conference and have fun exploring springtime in this beautiful region. We hope you can take a day or two before or after the conference to travel around to see why this is one of the best places in the country to live and recreate! Rent a bike, car or canoe to see our beautiful landscape and better understand our history. We encourage you to visit the State of Minnesota s exploreminnesota.com website to get all the information you need for a day trip or vacation to any part of Minnesota. We Minnesotans are proud of our state so just stop one of us if you have questions. We promise to display the principles of Minnesota Nice and say you betcha at least once when we talk to you. The Twin Cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul are home to over 3 million people spread over seven counties. There are hundreds of sites to see of historic and planning interest, not to mention thousands of interesting places to get a bite to eat or quench one s thirst. That being said... The Planners Guide Subcommittee has worked hard to create a Guide that balances the best sites of interest to planners with decent places to grab a bite or have a drink with friends. We did not map everything or try to duplicate the Chamber of Commerce s list of restaurants and shops. What you will find in the Guide are primarily places that are unique to the Twin Cities. Also, the Guide is oriented to neighborhoods within a short walk or bus ride of the Minneapolis Convention Center; most of the references are within a few miles of the conference headquarters. For most sites noted in the Guide, you can also jump in a cab and get there a bit faster. Minneapolis is a walkable, safe city. However, use caution at night and go in pairs or groups. Minneapolis is a diverse community that has a vibrant dining, nightlife and arts environment. As an example, Nicollet Ave. just west of the Convention Center has been co-named Eat Street because of the number and variety of restaurants located along this street south of downtown. If you love the arts and music, this is a great place to be. Pick up a free copy of Vita.Mn or City Pages at your hotel to see the long list of night life, music and arts events. Minneapolis is home of the world famous Guthrie Theater that recently relocated to a unique facility along the Mississippi River. If you are a sports fan, the Twin Cities has each of the major league sports along with the University of Minnesota teams. The Minnesota Twins are in town during the convention so stop in a see them play during their last season in the Metrodome where two World Series were won in 1987 and In closing, here are a few tips. Most bars stop serving alcohol at 2 am. The only place that packaged liquor, strong beer and wine can be purchased is in liquor stores and liquor stores are closed on Sunday. So if you want some wine, liquor or strong beer, stock up on Saturday. (You can still buy alcohol by the drink in restaurants after 10 am on Sunday. Before 10 am in Minnesota you should be in church not thinking about booze). And remember, soda is pop in Minnesota. Welcome to Minnesota! 5 photo by Bobak Ha Eri Downtown DOWNTOWN MINNEAPOLIS is the economic and cultural hub of the Upper Midwest, with approximately 150,000 employees, 30,000 residents, and 900,000 annual visitors. Nicollet Mall is the main retail spine, while Marquette Avenue is home to many large financial institutions. A thriving entertainment district is focused on Hennepin Avenue, 1st Avenue North, and Washington Avenue, on the edge of the city s historic warehouse district. The city grew from its riverfront mills. Massive clearance in the name of urban renewal took place in the 1950s and 1960s, erasing a portion of the city s history. In a concerted effort to stop losing ground to the suburbs, Minneapolis officials sought to modernize the downtown. The first skyway in the city opened in 1962, providing protection from the region s notorious weather. Nicollet was converted into a pedestrian and transit mall, designed by landscape architect Lawrence Halprin, in 1967 and generally considered one NAVIGATING MINNEAPOLIS Like many other Midwestern cities, Minneapolis is laid out in a modified gridiron pattern and divided into irregular quadrants, labeled Northeast, Southeast, North and South. Street names generally include a directional identifier such as NE, SE, N or S. The original street grids were oriented to the winding course of the Mississippi River through the city, adding another layer of complexity. On the downtown (west) side of the river, streets generally run east-west and avenues north-south. West (or is it north?) of the river, the pattern changes: the North quadrant of the city has no numbered streets, only avenues, while in the NE and SE quadrants the avenues generally run eastwest and the streets north-south! of the more successful pedestrian malls in the country. Mary Tyler Moore, full of optimism, tossed her tam skyward on the Nicollet Mall (at 7th Street) in the famous opening credits to the classic television program. The scene is memorialized with a bronze statue. Downtown Minneapolis possesses wonderful examples of nationally and internationally renowned architecture. The age of large-scale modern skyscrapers arrived in Minneapolis in 1973 with the completion of city s beloved IDS Center (792 ), designed by Philip Johnson. Don t miss the Crystal Court, an enclosed public space at the base of the IDS Center, flanked by retail uses and a hotel. Today downtown Minneapolis is home to five Fortune 500 companies and has more leasable office space (and more residents) than any other downtown in the Midwest outside of Chicago. For 2 years running, the Twin City region is at the top of MarketWatch s list of best metro areas for business, based on results from a variety of sources (Dec 2008). Mary Tyler Moore statue 8 9

6 Downtown cont. photo by Cria-cow Arches of the ING building It hosts three of the region s four major professional sports teams. Target Field, the new openair home of the Minnesota Twins, is under construction on the edge of the warehouse district and is slated to open in April of Residential development has exploded in and around downtown. Retail centered along Nicollet Mall includes department stores and shops covering a variety of tastes (and budgets), including Target, Macy s, and Neiman Marcus. Arts and cultural institutions abound, with an outstanding variety of live theater and music. You can find a prime example of the work of Minoru Yamasaki (designer of the World Trade Center) in downtown Minneapolis the ING building (20 Washington Ave. S., formerly the Northwestern National Life Insurance Building,) at the northern terminus of the Nicollet Mall (at Washington Ave.). Cesar Pelli s Wells Fargo Center (7th and Nicollet) and the new Central Library (4th and Nicollet); and Peavey Plaza (Nicollet between 11th and 12th), designed by M. Paul Friedberg, are also nationally recognized designs. Downtown has retained a number of outstanding historic buildings. Here are a few that are worth wandering inside rather than just admiring from the street: City Hall (350 5th St. N.), the Milwaukee Road Depot (225 3rd Ave. S.), the Foshay Tower, now the W Hotel (821 Marquette Ave.), the Grain Exchange Building ( th St. S.), the Lumber Exchange Building ( Hennepin Ave.), and Butler Square (100 Peavey Plaza, the only urban gathering place in the core of downtown Minneapolis, is on the list of national Marvels of Modernism (Cultural Landscape Foundation). 6th St. N.). Foshay Tower is a unique art deco building, modeled after the Washington Monument, and was the tallest in the city when it was completed in Minneapolis recently adopted a Ten-Year Transportation Action Plan to help achieve its transportation goals. The region s first light rail transit line the 12-mile Hiawatha Line opened The concrete utilized in the in 2004, connecting construction of Target Field downtown, MSP International airport, and the (MN Twins new home in 2010) is roughly enough to lay a 6-ft Mall of America. The line wide sidewalk from Minneapolis to Duluth (140 miles). currently carries an average of 27,000 people on a typical weekday. The Northstar commuter rail line will connect the northwest suburbs with downtown Minneapolis later this year. A second light rail line, the Central Corridor, connecting downtown Minneapolis and downtown St. Paul, is expected to open in 2014, and a third line to the southwestern suburbs will follow shortly thereafter. Minneapolis is second only to Portland among large cities when it comes to bicycle commuting, no small feat when it can reach 100 degrees in July and -20 in January! The City s efforts toward providing bicycle infrastructure are paying off, with bike lanes on many downtown streets and grade-separated trails on both sides of the river, around the lakes, and along several former rail rights-of-way, (including the country s first commuter-focused trail the Cedar Lake Trail). During the conference, you ll see major road construction and streetscape work along both 2nd Avenue South and Marquette Avenue, beginning near the convention center, designed to speed bus circulation through downtown. While you should spend some time discovering the longest skyway network in the world, don t let that prevent you from exploring the street level. For a nice walk from the convention center area, stroll the Loring Greenway (between 12th Street and the Hyatt Regency Hotel) to Loring Park. Continue through the park to the Whitney pedestrian bridge over I-94 and you ll find yourself at the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, home of the iconic Spoonbridge and Cherry sculpture. The oldest part of the campus, located near University Avenue near 15th Avenue SE, is centered on the Northrop Mall (designed by Cass Gilbert), which terminates at Northrop Auditorium on one end and Coffman Memorial Union on the other. It includes a number of significant buildings from the late 1800s and early 1900s, including many on the National Register of Historic Places. Farther east along University Avenue and 4th Street SE, one finds the nearly completed football stadium as well as the University s facilities for basketball, hockey, tennis, and swimming. It includes the Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs, which is home to the University s urban and regional planning program. The region s second light rail transit line, expected to open in 2014, will run through the campus on Washington Avenue. Several distinct commercial districts are located near the University. North of the campus, the Dinkytown area is centered around 14th Avenue and 4th Street SE. (Several theories exist about the origin of the name. The presence of trolleys known as dinkys seems most plausible.) The lively commercial district includes the mix of uses that one might expect in a prototypical college commercial district eateries, coffee shops, book stores, and clothing boutiques. A young musician named Bob Dylan lived in an apartment above Gray s Campus Drug, now the Loring Pasta 14 Bar. The University of Minnesota consistently ranks in the top five largest U.S. universities by enrollment (Fall, 2008= 51,140). The St. Anthony Falls Historic District was added to the National Register and was locally designated in The St. Anthony Falls Heritage Trail a two mile loop that covers both sides of the river is a good place to start exploring. You ll come across many important landmarks as well as interpretive signs that provide information about the history of the district. 12 Uptown WHILE THERE is no official neighborhood named Uptown, the term is widely recognized in the Twin Cities as identifying a trendy hub of activity centered around West Lake Street and Hennepin Avenue, which has long been one of the more successful commercial areas outside of downtown. photo by Transguyjay photo by Christopher Ludtke As with most early commercial areas, the intersection of streetcar lines brought a mix of uses. An effort to market the area as "Uptown" began in the 1920s. Surrounding residential areas included a mix of the the mansions of the upper class, around the nearby lakes, and housing for people of more modest means. In recent decades, the area has attracted a mix of hipsters, punk rockers, artists, musicians, and young professionals. The pedestrian-oriented area features a variety of independent and nationally known shops, boutiques, book stores, restaurants, and night spots. Uptown Arts Festival Uptown Theater The Uptown Transit Station, located at Hennepin Avenue and the Midtown Greenway, is an active hub of public transportation. As of early 2009, a healthy debate is focused on whether the Southwest Corridor Light Rail Transit Line will stop at this station or whether a different LRT alignment will be chosen to connect the southwestern suburbs with downtown. Recent years have seen a good deal of high density residential and mixed use development, sometimes triggering debate about appropriate scale in the community. In 2008 the City adopted a small area plan for Uptown, which outlines a vision for the area s future and provides land use policy guidance. Its massive collection includes paintings, photographs, prints and drawings, textiles, architecture, and decorative arts. Most exhibits are free! The Children s Theater (the largest such theater in the country) and the Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD) are located adjacent to the Art Institute. The system includes over 50 miles of hiking, biking, and driving paths, including numerous interpretive sites, kiosks, and information centers. Famed landscape architect H.W.S. Cleveland was an early leader in designing the system, established in the 1880s and expanded over the course of the past 100-plus years. The system includes seven distinct byway districts that exhibit unique landscape characteristics and cultural resources: ( The sections of the parkway system most accessible to conference attendees without a bike or car are the Downtown Riverfront and Minnehaha Park/ Minnehaha Creek. The latter is easily accessible from the 50th Street/ Minnehaha Park light rail station

16 photo by Eli Duke EXTENDING from Lake Street the city s eastern to western borders, Lake Street is the major east-west commercial corridor in south Minneapolis. photo by transguyjay The street s commercial development dates to the 1880s, and by the 1920s it was second only to downtown as a retail hub. Following a period of relative decline during the middle part of the 20th century, Lake Street has experienced revitalization in recent years, due in large part to the rise of immigrantowned businesses. Businesses and murals reflect a strong Latino presence, especially between I-35W and Hiawatha Avenue. Midtown Global Market The Midtown Exchange, a major reuse of a former Sears department store, anchors this section of Lake Street. It includes the multi-ethnic Midtown Global Market, new housing, county offices, a corporate headquarters and a hotel. Hennepin County recently completed a major reconstruction of the street, sidewalks, and streetscape between the Mississippi River and the Uptown area. The Midtown Greenway, one of the city s most popular multi-use trails, parallels Lake Street on a former rail corridor one block to the north. 18 photo by Chuck Olsen NORTHEAST Minneapolis (nicknamed Nordeast ), located east of the Mississippi River and north of East Hennepin Avenue, has historically been home to a large share of the city s industrial sector. Early settlement in Northeast included a large population of German, Polish, and Scandinavian immigrants. Nordeast photo by Doug Wallick Amid the heavy industry and railroad lines, the district s reputation was that many blocks housed either a church or a bar. Much of Northeast was in the city s liquor patrol limits, which limited where saloons could locate for nearly 100 years. Today, the area s ethnic makeup is quite diverse, and much of Northeast has become a hip place to live, work, dine, and hang out. Grain Belt Brewery Complex Former storefronts and industrial buildings in Northeast have proven attractive to the region s artists. The Northeast Arts District, covering the area between Broadway and 26th Avenue NE and the river and Central Avenue, includes a number of studios and galleries. The historic Grain Belt Brewery complex, located along the river near Marshall and Broadway, is a major revitalization success story. After brewing ceased in the 1970s, numerous re-use ideas failed to materialize. The city purchased the property and sold it for re-use and redevelopment. The complex now includes a successful mix of offices, art studios, a community library, and other small businesses. 20 photo by Doug Wallick St. Paul & greater Twin Cities Environs MANY PLACES in St. Paul are well worth a visit. The Route 94B, C and D buses offer all-day direct service via I-94 between the two downtowns. Downtown St. Paul sits high on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi, offering dramatic views across the river valley from its many parks and parkways. Downtown is known for both its urban squares and its concentration of cultural attractions. Rice Park, a public square that dates from the 1849 original plat, is the center of a cultural district that includes the historic Landmark Center (a 1902 courthouse and post office that now houses a visitor center and several small museums), the City Hall and Ramsey County Courthouse (a 1932 building in the Art Deco style now considered one of the most stunning examples of Depression-era public architecture), the Science Museum of Minnesota, the Minnesota Children s Museum, the 1921 St. Paul Public Library, and the Ordway Theatre. The Cass Gilbert-designed 1905 State Capitol, the 1915 Saint Paul Cathedral, and the Minnesota History Center are other landmarks located prominently on the city s hills. Another newly redesigned historic square, Mears Park, is the center of Lowertown, the city s original warehouse district, now home St. Paul s XCEL ENERGY CENTER ranked 2nd only to the NFL s Green Bay Packers for Stadium Experience 2008 ESPN The Magazine Ultimate Standing. to a popular farmers market, artists lofts, new housing, and the original Union Station, envisioned as a future transit and rail hub. Several new neighborhoods planned in the 1990s as urban villages have now sprung up around the edges of downtown. The Upper Landing, located on the river flats just west of the Science Museum, consists of about 600 housing units townhouses, condos and market-rate and affordable apartments on eight city blocks, with public parks and regional trail along the riverfront. Just north of Lowertown, the district formerly known as the North Quadrant has been transformed from a collection of surface parking lots to a new neighborhood of approximately 500 residents in new and converted condos and apartments around the new Wacouta Commons Park (at Wacouta and 8th Street). Two famous streets parallel one another for over four miles between downtown St. Paul and the Mississippi at the city s western boundary. Summit Avenue, recognized by APA in 2008 as a Great Street, is considered the best-preserved example of a Victorian-era residential boulevard in America. The homes on Summit date from 1858 to the present and represent most styles of American residential architecture, including Beaux Arts, bungalow, Georgian Revival, Italian Villa, prairie, Queen Anne, ranch, Romanesque, Second Empire, Spanish colonial, and Tudor villa. The avenue s park-like character is enhanced by its broad, tree-lined central median with its well-used biking and walking paths. Decades of neighborhood planning and preservation efforts have sustained the avenue s character. Just a block away, Grand Avenue is one of the region s most successful traditional shopping streets, with a diverse set of unique local businesses as The highly popular live radio well as national chains. The variety show A PRAIRIE HOME cluster of shops at Victoria and Grand (some of which COMPANION, created and occupy former 1920s-era hosted by Garrison Keillor, auto dealerships) are particularly noteworthy, as Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul. usually originates from the are the blocks around the The radio program inspired a Macalester College campus, just west of Snelling 2006 film of the same name.
