REPORTS ROUND UP. APRIL DEFIBRILLATOR TRAINING. On Friday the 23 rd of March our Government granted defibrillator training was held at the flying field clubhouse. As a part of this grant received we had to have the required training on the operation, and understanding of the way in which CPR is most importantly involved for the use of this piece of equipment to be effective. The number of Club members who attended was quite good. Around 20 members were present as the instructor whose name was Steve took us through the produces not only once but several times to make sure that all had fully understood the operation procedures, then he called for our members to come up and try out what he had shown us, and quite a few had a go which I must say was pretty darn hard work, but at least we do now know how it works and the benefits of this machine combined with CPR. Let s hope we never have to use it, but it is a nice feeling to know we now have this training. 2 NOCTURNAL FLYING The night was dark and stormy, The candle took a fit, Old king Cole fell down the hole, And came up covered in... Doesn't matter. And so it was a dark and stormy night, on Saturday the 24th of March, and I mean dark. There was heavy cloud cover and no stars to be seen, only the occasional flashes of lighting in the eastern sky. It was scary for the night flying pilots who took to the black sky whilst being bombarded with the sudden flashes of lightning bursting across the sky and lighting up the field. All aircraft did manage to make one or more flights, before stumps were called and we all packed up and head for home. Report by Les Davis. APRIL 13 TH -15 TH, The weekend had 60 plus pilots from all over Australia. One from Broom in WA, one from Alice Springs and one from New Zealand. 3 The Friday we had great weather and a lot of flying for the full day. Unfortunately on Saturday and Sunday we had strong winds and rain. The highlight of the weekend was Arron Garle and his Havoc, as well as his flying display. Tyson Dodd with the F104 Starfighter. The huge F104 Starfighter by Kevin & Tyson Dodd. This model is world class and will be back in the USA in the next few weeks. Paul McCarthy and his CARF L39. The other great model was Paul McCarthy and his CARF L39. Paul put on a great flying display with his new model. Overall it was a very well-run event by the VJAA. Report and Photos by Andrew Thomas. COMMUNITY DAY AT CHUM HOUSE. On Monday the 23 rd of April the club was invited to give a talk to the Chum House patients about our Club, Aircraft and the coming up of ANZAC day. The topic of ANZAC Day was right up our alley at this present time as we have been preparing an ANZAC Day Display of WW1 Planes for a while. Alan Roshier and Les Davis spent an hour and a half talking on our favourite topics, aircraft, flying and the background to our club from day one till now. The talk lasted about one hour before we got to question time with coffee and a biscuit, followed by a one on one talk with the patients usually about aircraft, aviation in general and of course WW1 and WW2. 4 ANZAC DAY CELEBRATION. As a part of our Club's community services involvement we had organised this special day, 100 years of the ANZACs. We held our ANZAC Day Celebration to remember those who fought and died in WW1 for our freedoms we all share today. This was done with a simple explanation and a few kind words on what the ANZAC s did, and what they stand for. This was followed by offering all present an ANZAC biscuits on ANZAC day which we all did. It was very pleasing to have all involved in some small way of our celebration. Sopwith Pup on a low pass. And now it s time to Fly our WW1 aircraft as a salute to those brave young pilots who flew these magnificent aircraft (mainly biplane aircraft) into a many air battles during the years of 1914 through to This was the first time powered aircraft were used as a weapon of war, and to think it was only ten (10) years earlier that two bicycle mechanics managed the first powered man carrying flight, it s almost unbelievable. And now to our salute, with four (4) wonderful biplanes sitting just off on the pit area and ready to take to the skies, but before we do we need some memories, yes it s time for some wonderful pictures of these magnificent aircraft that the club members have managed to obtain either through purchase or through construction. It really doesn't matter where they came from, the fact is there here. When I floated the idea of this celebration day 12 months ago there were no know WW1 Sopwith Camel. Finish just in time for the ANZAC day celebration. To be flown by Cpt Alan Uren. aircraft in the club that I knew off, so to have four beautiful aircraft sitting on our runway, (note there is a fifth one but I believe he could not get the engine going to fly over to our airfield from Maryborough the area but all in all it was a great result for the club and to its members, great job and well done! It was great to see that the members and families that where there in the numberers of 20 to watch these aircraft. The aircraft did manage to get in quite a few very scale like flights before the tricky wind came and 4

5 put a halt to the flying, but we had succeeded in what we had set out to do, so thankyou to all who attended and a big thankyou to those pilots who managed to get their aircraft to the field. CLUB BUSINESS PRESIDENT S REPORT APRIL Thanks to all the members that turned up on the Friday for our Defibrillator training. It was great to see fifty percent of our club members on the day. The night flying on the 24th of March was disappointing with only 3 members flying on the night. The members that turned up had a great night with a bit of fun. The club has the OMP Scanner racing and VPA pattern next month and it would be great to see club members out to support both these events. I have been told that a Central Victorian Flying field will be holding the ASAA Scale Aerobatic Championships in November this year with top competitors from all over Australia. SECRETARY S REPORT Dear Members, I would like to thank all the members who attended the Defibrillator Training, there were 18 in attendance and I hope the information gained may help in the future. 6 Reports Defibrillator Training o 18 members attended our training which was an excellent turn out. Members were shown the fundamentals of CPR and the use of the Defibrillator. Everyone was well informed. Thanks to all that attended. Night Flying o On a very bleak night Gary Schmedje and Robbie Marshall turned up to fly with a few hardy spectators. Robbie had one Flight and Gary had 3 with some light issues. The event lasted about 1 hour because of the weather, but a bit off fun was had by all. General Business Come and Try day has been postponed until next year. Duration Competition o Noel Frost to send out an to gage Interest. If insufficient numbers competition will be called off. Anzac Day o Flying of WW1 planes will be between 12pm and 2pm. Bring your planes along and commemorate the day. Scanner Day o A few entries so far. More will be discussed next meeting. The entries are coming in and we expect upward of 16 contestants at this current time. It is also great to see at least 3 new pilots having a go at this fun competition. I've had some anniversary decal stickers made to be placed on the racing scanner aircraft as this is a special event, the 20th Anniversary of the current Phoenix Scanner that is still in production, which is a long time for a sport aircraft. 6

7 It s a little sad that the Large Scale Racing at Northern this year (March) was cancelled and then was rescheduled on top of our Scanner Day. This has taken some of our pilots away from us and also we have taken some of theirs as well. This is very disappointing for us, being we have had this date locked in for a good many years now. A filthy tramp wandering by stopped and said, Look, since you ll be dead in a few minutes, and it won t matter to you, how about a little sex before you go? She screamed, NO! Bug off you filthy old bastard! He shrugged and turned away saying, Okay, I ll just wait at the bottom. She didn t jump. It that s time again. It may be autumn but we still have not had much rain. The pour airfield is looking very brown and dry at the moment.
